Spike Lee Calls Chance The Rapper “A Straight Up Fraud”

(AllHipHop News) Spike Lee and Chance The Rapper have been feuding since the famed movie maker crafted “ChiRaq” and Chance objected.

Lee went on to diss Chance at Northwestern University yesterday stating “Chance the Rapper is a fraud, a straight up fraud” during the Q&A portion of the speaking engagement.

“Chance the Rapper’s a fraud. Straight-up fraud,” Lee said. “He puts himself up as a speaker of the people, but that means you have to put truths that you see. That doesn’t mean you can pick and choose what you talk about.”

The director also called out Chance’s father Ken Bennett, a Chicago governmental worker that was an aide to Senator Obama. Bennett now works with often-criticized Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Some students rushed to Chance’s defense, according to reports, and countered that Chance has extensive work in the community.

Lee left Northwestern University with a standing ovation from the audience.

Apparently Chance The Rapper and Spike Lee have a relationship that goes all the way back to when the rapper was a baby.

  • WeakSauce

    F Spike Lee! Real Talk!

  • Leonard Tarver

Stop Lying yo diapers was always saugy 😂😂😭😂💦

  • Anthony Mason

Chance the rapper seems like he does community work to promote his music….

    • WeakSauce

Doesn’t every artist/entertainer do it for some kind of promotion or recognition?

      • Anthony Mason

Yeah. Even the Migos donating $1000 to a school and writing it on a huge check.

Very few actually rich people donate very much either. Jay will donate a mill here and there but dude is worth what… $500,000,000??? Any amount someone gives is up to them…but I always have thought that if you have that much money, you should do what you are capable of and for him that is much much more…

Most of these celebs give for self gain…..not out of kindness. Their accountant wants to get them a tax break and their PR person wants to shop a good deed to news outlets…..

      • WeakSauce

Agree with all you’ve done said. And i only asked because it seem like you were singling him out (Chance).

      • Anthony Mason

No. It is across the board…

  • Perfect Timing

It’s clear that Chance The Rapper came from privilege and not dodging bullets In gang areas of Chicago.

    • nothing9

Naw that’s not true. Chance is from the same hood i’m from which is Chatham. Now Chatham has the middle class residents and low income residents mixed in together. Chance may have came from privilege and so did I, but Chatham is also home to the GD’S main set “Lon city” So he definitely seen and dodged alot of ish in Chatham specifically 79th Street.

      • WeakSauce

What part of the City you stay at now, if you even live in Chicago anymore…

      • nothing9

        Chatham

  • Well…. Chance had a valid point. Spike on the other hand seems like his sh*t is on some payback. I like Spike and what he’s done for Black folks in cinema. But that last movie? Come on…. Stopping gun violence by withholding p*ssy? Nick Cannon in the joint? Who the f*ck did Spike think he was fooling?Star Wars was more believable than that sh*t. And he was wrong for satirizing Chicago’s gun violence. That sh*t was weak. Sorry Spike. I appreciate what you did but you need to stop with the hate…

    • All Headz Realize

What’s wrong with Nick Cannon being in the movie?

      • With all of the local residents of Chicago available, it made the movie seem like an outsider movie with a bunch of people that had no affiliation with Chicago. That’s the equivalent of Century Fox making a movie about the bible with no people of color involved. Outside of his last name association, what the f*ck does Nick Cannon know about Chicago’s problem with gun violence? His inclusion is offensive because it makes light of what’s going on there. He’s a comedian. Imagine Spike using that dude in his documentary about Katrina. N*ggas would be furious.

      • All Headz Realize

Nonsense, you’re caught up in a systematic mentality that tells you that a movie must be real! You probably believe that 2Pac was a real gangbanging thug and not a brilliant actor/rapper/social activist that he was. Bruh, Spike wasn’t trying to promote gangbanging lifestyle that led to the sickness of killing your own brother because he’s in another gang, bruh. You can’t compare self-destructive behavior to a natural caused disaster like a Katrina, bruh. Stop killing each other and stop looking for someone to sugarcoat the story. Is black people at war with black people and killing each other while other races watch and laugh. It’s very embarrassing if you ask me. There’s no way a city of Chicago’s size should have double the murder rate of a city 3x its population like New York City. It sounds like you take pride in it. Nick Cannon is a very well versed and popular actor and you’ll one day regret even saying that nonsense about him.

      • ^^^ Nick Cannon Stan^^^

        You neutered your whole argument.

      • All Headz Realize

OK bruh, there’s a movie called “City of Vultures” about the Chicago lifestyle you are so proud of. Nick Cannon ain’t in it and it didn’t make it to the theaters. Have you seen it yet? #Exactly

      • TRUTH SPEAKER

Great statement but the last line about Nick Cannon killed it lol

      • TRUTH SPEAKER

You need to realize: He didn’t make the movie only for people in Chicago hoods to view and enjoy. He made it for the whole world.

      • STEPH

Mr. Rated G…AKA. Nickelodeon in a movie about Chicago?????? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 that’s what’s wrong.

      • All Headz Realize

You are miss informed bruh! CNN Capone &Noriega use to talk about Iraq, Kuwait and Lebanon to describe their hood. This ain’t nothing new bruh!

      • STEPH

WTF are you talking about? Somehow I think you meant to send this somewhere else lol.

  • All Headz Realize

“Chance the wack rapper!” Lol! This dude is the biggest beneficiary of Obama’s presidency.
The only reason he got that SNL feather.

  • ursocalledgod

chance is wack and spike holds this L for that dumb azz movie. come on spike we need another classic baby!

    • Nasahgnik

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus on Netflix a classic Spike Lee joint. Every frame was like a photograph and it showed artwork by Black Artist I doubt would be seen in any other place. Spike should really open up a gallery with the art pieces he’s used in his movies.

      • ursocalledgod

Good looking out folk. Will def check it out.

  • RayStantz

Spike looks like he’s thinking baby Chance is a fraud in that picture lol.. movie was wack though, I couldn’t make it through the first 15-20 minutes

    • Anthony Mason

It was cringe worthy. I’m in Chi Town all the time. It is like a second home to me and that was not an accurate reflection
      ..

      • All Headz Realize

Do you think “Crooklyn” was an accurate depiction of Brooklyn when it came out? People said the same thing back then but that’s what Spike does, he tells the story in a “What if” viewpoint. Know that Spike’so movies will never promote the actual violent situation but in turn criticize it.

      • Crooklyn seemed pretty accurate to me.

      • Brian Andrew Smith

no one from chicago calls it chitown

      • Anthony Mason

Not true….And I’m not from there but my best friend born and raised who is still there and my family still says chi city, chi town, cago, Chicago, “nigga you coming to the city or what nigga?”…lol!

Bruh who gives a f***? There are tons of names for every city….

      • WeakSauce

Every single on person I know still calls it ChiTown

      • Anthony Mason

Like I’m saying people call it what they feel like….

Kanye calls it chi city and chi town….

      • WeakSauce

Yeah, all I was saying that all my peeps just call it chitown. Kanye ain’t ChiTown though.

      • Anthony Mason

He has been LA since 2009 so touche…..

      • All Headz Realize

And in Brooklyn over 10 years plus he graduated high school from the suburbs out in Illinois. #PhoneyDude

      • WeakSauce

      • BIG MIKE SOMETHING SERIOUS

No offense, but it wasn’t mean to be accurate. It was an adaption of a Play. Besides their a Documentary already out and it did a great job, So why would he do the same. A Spike Lee Movie has never been of the norm, JS.

      • Weedras

that’s what i keep telling ppl.. smh… the damn movie is an adaptation and that’s why i can’t say Chance the rapper and his lil hissy fit is valid… because any one who comprehends this shouldn’t be offended…

in 1990-1991 @ CLuB GLaM SLaM, as Dr. Dre sat to our left in our drivers seat in one Mercedes Benz 190e he was interjected with the words “F*ck That” and then told “In the FUTURE the way you Sound in the Studio” was to be put into the Mercedes Car Stereo , the Sony Walkman and the Panasonic Car Phone upon the floor of that vehicle. We had listened to Dr. Dre and TOLD him while swiping our left hand as a “Price is Right” hand model across the center console. Dr. Dre’s mouth flung WIDE OPEN and just said “DUHAYMMnnn!!!” as these advents were NEWS to Andre. We shook hands on it and took pictures, and throughout many years of our lifetime we continued to remind Dr. Dre that he was To Do these things, we also utilized Interscope Records 1-800 number divulging to key personnel of what of us was FOR Dr. Dre and how Dr. Dre had been TOLD prior at CLUB GLAM SLAM in 1990-1991. …

    • Anthony Mason

      Not you again…

    • Papi Peligro

So you guys were in the car with the biggest weed heads of the 90s and said we need for music to sound great on your cell phone, your car speakers, and your headphones. Dre went DUHYAMM at some weed head Revelation.
This also fits other revelations in weed history.

  • STEPH

I don’t even fu-k with the Chance guy, but Spike Lee can drink dumpster juice for making that bullshit movie. Him and 50 cents career mirrors each other…..Dope at the beginning, but isn’t worth a damn and damn near irrelevant LOL! Yeah Curtis Jackson fans SHOTS FIRED😂😂😂😂😂😂

    • Ike’s Mood

      MOTORCYCLE REVS

  • Sean Power

    chiraqi was horrible thats all

  • Q.

Damn, so Spike is connected with Chance’s dad from back in the day. Interesting. Sounds like a personal beef…

…As far as Chi-Raq, I wanted it to be good, and he had a ton of support for the project…but it was a letdown after all the hype. I get the Lysistrata concept, but the singing and jokes took away from the gravity of the topic. Spike would’ve been more successful writing an original drama, something more gritty like a Clockers, or Boyz n the Hood, something the young generation can sink their teeth the into. Sh!t was damn-near like a Black version of West Side Story. A little too artsy for what we need to speak to young folks.

  • Papi Peligro

Chiraq was garbage. I couldn’t make it through like 15 minutes of it. How the heck did he get all those people to read that script and do the movie. MOVIE IS HORRIBLE. Worse to watch than the murders on World Star.

  • TRUTH SPEAKER

I called it when the Chiraq controversy first popped off. And for the record, Chiraq is an amazing film. A great piece of art. It was exhilarating. When I saw it I couldn’t believe the hate it got in some circles.

People need to look at it for what it is, not for what they think it should be.

    • Chiraq was garbage bro. Wutchu on?

      • TRUTH SPEAKER

If you understand and appreciate the art of film you would know. It’s brand new and fresh.

      • Take the L. That’s what YOU need to understand. Then have a seat and think deeply

      • TRUTH SPEAKER

there better be some loud in that L mufuhcka.
