T.I. Earns Nine BET Hip-Hop Award Nominations; Event to Honor KRS-One

By Chris Richburg

Atlanta rapper T.I. emerged as the man to beat as nominations were announced for this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards.

T.I.'s album T.I. Vs T.I.P. received nine nods for Best Collabo, Best Live Performance, Lyricist of the Year, MVP, Track of the Year, CD of the Year, Hustler of the Year, Best Ringtone and Viewer's Choice.

Other nominees included Lil' Wayne with seven nominations, Kanye West with six, Common with five and Jay-Z with four.

Ludacris and 50 Cent each reach received three nods, while Diddy and UGK garnered two nominations.

In addition to honoring the best in Hip-Hop, the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2007 will recognize rap legend KRS-One with the "I Am Hip-Hop" Icon Award.

Comedian/actor Katt Williams will play host for the second straight year at the General Motors and Alltel Wireless-sponsored event, which will take place on Oct. 13 at Atlanta's Civic Center and feature performances by Nelly, Lil' Wayne, Kanye West and Common.

Continuing its acknowledgment of international Hip-Hop, BET partnered with British music entities MTV Base and 1 Xtra BBC to create a special award around the British urban music scene.

Five Hip-Hop artists from the United Kingdom will for the Best UK Hip-Hop Artist award. The winner will be announced on Oct. 1 in the UK via radio and MTV BASE News.

This year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards follows last year's inaugural event, which was watched by 3.64 million viewers (2.44 million households), according to Nielsen Media Research.

For Stephen Hill, BET executive vice president of Entertainment Programming, Music and Talent, the BET Hip-Hop Awards allows an opportunity to highlight the influence of Hip-Hop as well as the aspects of the culture that people love.

"We're at a crucial point in the life of this music; its messages and language have been scrutinized more this year than any other time in its history," said Hill, who was excited about the event’s return to Atlanta. "I hope all Hip-Hop critics and fans will watch this show that will show all sides of the genre proudly and authentically. Love it. Hate it. The 'BET Hip-Hop Awards 2007' will have style, substance and swagger."

The BET Hip-Hop Awards 2007 will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT Oct. 17 on BET.

Yo, a word of warning to people coming to ATL for this event, HIP HOP COPS ARE HERE!!!! Please come here acting like you got sense, these fools will clap you for something stupid.  ATL will be congested with traffic and all that stuff but the majority of the people won't be inside the event so be easy and try and enjoy yourself, Hip Hop is already under the microscope as we speak so lets not make it worst.

I don't think any real emcee should be worried about getting a BET award. That shit is not an honor at all. I know real emcees can go through their whole career successfully and never get one of those flake awards.

Look at KRS-One, Wu-Tang Clan (I think they got something from VH-1 and a grammy nomination but look at how long it took) Scarface, Kool G Rap, Brand Nubian, TUPAC (who really got more recognition posthumously than he ever did alive. He was a target of the media they rarely had anything positive to say about him even though he did BIG NUMBERS and had a huge impact on the culture).

So to be a strong artist about your craft aint got shit to do with awards and considering the people giving them out it don't mean much. I mean Viacom definitely is not the bastion of progressiveness for Hip Hop but we get in where we fit in.

Oh yeah I know they said they are "honoring" KRS-One now, but shit it's like when they got around to honoring Grand Master Flash. Most of the cats there were acting like they didn't even know who he was and they acted like they weren't going to give him a standing ovation. Busta was representing real Hip Hop in that building on that night though.

i dont think t.i. deserves all those nominations. t.i. vs t.i.p. was wack. it was a stupid concept. he dosent want the streets to think he's selling out. with wearing all the suits, and the film career popin off. so he blames all flashy shit on t.i. and t.i.p. is the streets and not feeling any of that. he sounds crazy doing interviews as a diffrient character. and the weirdest thing was the album didnt even reflect any change in his personality from song to song. it all just sounded like t.i. i was really dissapointed in this album. cassidy did this concept way better. even if t.i. did it first.

They definitely need to do some sort of tribute to the 6. Anyways, I agree with most of the choices and all, but NELLY performing? I'm a fan of the STL hip-hop scene, but I don't think Nelly's been any good for a while now.

I'm glad T.I. got all of those nominations. That T.I. vs. TIP album was one of the best to come out this year. I'm also glad that Weezy is finally getting some nominations. Hopefully he'll take home some of those awards. I can't wait to watch it. It should be better than that crappy awards show MTV just aired.

I think T.I. is a very lyrically inclined MC, however, in my opinion is latest album is not on hit. Not hatin on him but if that album has garnered the most nods hip hop ain't dead it's just whack.

Secondly, I guess we should all get ready for more cryin from b*tch *ass Kanye when he don't win.

Lastly, how the f*ck does Jay-Z keep endin up in anything related to a hip hop accolade??? He ain't done sh*t over the last couple years but executive work. I wish people would quit brown-nosin that poser and associatin him with everything great about rap music. He's good but he ain't "that" good.
