Grand Hustle's "Muscle" 8 Ball MJG Honored In Memphis

Monday, June 15, 2009 11:26 AM | 50 comments
By Chuck "Jigsaw" Creekmur and Houston Williams
8Ball MJG was honored at the annual Urban Network Music-Entertainment & Marketing Summit in Memphis, Tennessee last Saturday.

The group, natives of Memphis, was elated.

"Just getting to be honored is a blessing. 8Ball MJG don't get nothing," 8 Ball told AllHipHop.com jokingly. "They finally gave us something, " concurred MJG.

In a more serious manner, 8Ball said that the honor by The Urban Network was augmented, because they were honored in the presence of other Memphis greats such as Al Bell (former chairman & co-owner of Stax Records), Willie Mitchell (Grammy-winning producer for Al Green) and radio icon Bobby O'Jay.

"Them boys are pioneers. Just to be spoken in the same breath as those cats [is an honor.] Willie Mitchell is Stax Music. Did a lot for Memphis. MJG said, "Willie Mitchell is a cool mother f***er with a cool a** sound."

Few groups have been as criminally overlooked as 8Ball MJG, but now that the group has been signed to T.I.'s Grand Hustle, they expect to see the recognition that recognizes their legend stature.

"We stay working, but 8Ball MJG, we're [signed to] Grand Hustle now. The album will be out in October. Just [letting] all the haters know it’s for real. 8Ball MJG is now Grand 'Muscle.'"

They admitted that they expected a more prosperous experience than they had during their brief, one album stint with Bad Boy Records.

"Its a totally different situation. I can't describe it in all the ways, but time will tell," 8Ball said.

The situation at Grand Hustle is distinctive as well now that T.I. is incarcerated for various infractions related to an attempt to purchase guns and silencers.

"[T.I.] hadn't been making our records for us and he ain't the one that Grand Hustle gotta market and promote. Its really up to [Jason] Geter [CEO of Grand Hustle] and the rest of the staff...and us," 8Ball continued. "T.I. needs to take his 'vacation' and rest his mind and we got it."

Various groups performed at the Urban Network gala, which attracted local Memphis acts including Kia Shine. Throughout the weekend, other acts like Pretty Ricky and West Coast rapper Spice1 performed as well.

Urban Network Group Inc. expanded the showcase to allow unsigned and independent artists to perform live for the music industry top execs.

Participants of the conference had the opportunity to join with decision makers in the industry to learn several layers of the industry. The company gave artists a symposium to present their creativity to the movers and shaker in the music world from major labels, publishers, distributors and others.

they went from tony to sean, now to cliff...from sharks to a rat...lol

they been on so many labels i doubt they see a nickel from an album sell. you know sean still 'own' some points. they shouldv'e stay with tony though.

'In the middle of doin crime (Uggh), it never stopped me from writin rhymes
It never stopped me from playin music,
God, but it didn't mean I had to use it
It was obvious, I had to give up the streets - for the beats
Not knowin, but havin faith on just how long that it would be
Before I made it, before somebody picked up my tape and played it
With a remark like, "Hey, played that instrumental, you cat's got potential."
In the process of doing talent shows, parties, and mix tapes
We even put it down on some of our homeboys jail release dates
I can remember in the past closin down at fast foods
Strictly stickin to my dreams, but feelin like I'd be the last dude
Who can make it in this rap, I thought that they ain't go see me in Memphis
It was like a time they looked over Tennesseee,
and didn't know Hip-Hop was in us.
To all my vets in the game, I got love, stay on your toes
Cause back in the days, I use to use your 4-5 instrumental to do my shows
And look, I was 17 - when I signed my first contract
And about 18 1/2 when I signed my worst contract, we hurt from that
And til this day, they still distributin - our first tape
before Comin Out Hard, now can you feel it?
Be humble and patient with whatever you should choose
Cause, to get to where I am right now, I done paid my dues.'

'A C-note for a concert, I know that sounds preposterous
Nigga, we didn't have a pot to piss
So we got on stage and we rocked the bitch.
Fuck the chee$e, I love to see...My niggas in the front row
Get buck wild, start a fight, the police make a nigga stop the show
Niggas all in the parkin lot, bustin shots, fuckin with hoes
Box chevy with the spokes and vogues,
niggas didn't know shit about a 20 inch Mo-Mo
Hard head, young nigga don't believe that shit, til I see that shit
See them heavyweight niggas, one day, I'm gonna be that shit
Ok, everybody know everybody done sold dope, ran with a gang
Pimp some hoes, and..snorted a little coke..but uhh..
I'm space agein..and we'll forever be
Eightball, the fat mack, and...M-J fuckin G
Turn the page, from then to now, and we still grindin
Small clubs and small towns think they bouncin, and we find them
Put them on the guest list, make them pump their fist and get buck to this
Make one of them weed smokin, gangsta bitches get fucked to this
Expand, give all my true fans what they demand
Do my part again and uhh...come out hard again and uhh.."

they have paid their dues. just hate to see them getting fu*ked by the business of music

he left cash money cuz he wasn't PAID..ahh might've had a story on here too come to think about it..what fucks me up is what happened to suave..ball & g left cuz of $ then tmix left cuz t draper wasn't feelin the new mix.follow up solos from crime boss & mr.mike[on priority] weren't as good.and t draper went up to relativity/red distribution & physically assaulted mufuckaz to get his $.I also heard when tela went to rap a lot,j prince ran t draper out of htown to the atl..but draper is still in h town..and tela is back in mtown..wtf.crime boss is fuckin with lil flip [?!]..

this is why you need to be my future ex baby mama..the pioneer's of southern rap get overlooked in 2009..like niggaz that's into these new niggaz didn't do their research.but let's be honest: if you are into yung la & gorilla zoe & b  hamp & shit,[who I feel won't have a 3 cd catalog as individuals],you won't respect "on the outside lookin' in" or "ridin' dirty"..that's a generational thing, much like the difference between fastfood & home cookin'.

as for "top of the world" vs "on the outside lookin in",I think the former's success happened cuz of the nationwide deal with relativity/red..but bubbled on the back of the latter, which I think is a masterpiece, which really gained momentum from "comin out hard" "lay it down" might arguably be their most popular song ever..[sidenote,I flew from california to dallas tx for a concert that had both 8 ball & mjg & ugk on the same ticket..THAT was the shit]..

[another sidenote-by the time ball made,"starships & rockets",it seemed something happened in his life,to change him..and later, mjg eventually gravitated to that barry white ass flow..what made them so potent to me was how they were wrapped in t mix's soulfull productions..I wish they could all unite for 2010].

Diddy b boppin his artists upside the head with fees and other shit. Contract might say u gonna make a mil, but I bet it don't state how much Diddy gonna grab off dat million.

I guess after BIG died, he started feeling his pockets gettin a lil less bigger. Hence, all da signees he's had after big's death: Black Rob, G-Dep (Wonder where he at?), Mark Curry, Dream (Not The Dream), Big Gee, Duke, Carl Thomas, Da Band, Danity Kane, Day 26, etc. etc.
Bottom line is, when his artists don't do "BIG" numbers, Diddy takes whatever $ dat comes in and gives da artist whatever...He all about keepin up his image and lifestyle.

Dis just my opinion...could b da truth.

Preach brothers, preach!!!
The crazy thang about it is when they signed to Bad boy I was charged because I thought that wit diddy they would get the exposure, and props(record sales) that they deserve. But diddy stopped promoting shit and was more worried about makin reality shows and promoting himself instead of marketing his artist.  O well my niggaz got a gold plaque out the deal so i guess it wasn"t bad. But hell they went gold on suave house in the mid 90"s so them niggaz always have had that core following oin the south, just like UGK, they gone sell 500,000 regardless down here and if htey're promoted right ain't no tellin. Anyway props to Ball & G, true legends,  put it like this i was in the 5th grade when comin out hard dropped, and it's still inmy cd case now 16 years later.  now that's classic shit!!!
