Kendrick Lamar Discusses Musical Influences For "To Pimp A Butterfly" During Interview With Flying Lotus

K. DOT: A LOT OF ARTISTS LIKE TO STAY REDUNDANT… I WASN’T GOING TO DO THAT

(AllHipHop News) Kendrick Lamar was a guest on producer/artist Flying Lotus’ BBC Radio 1 Residency show. Fly Lo spent 2 hours celebrating the TDE emcee’s new album To Pimp A Butterfly.

The program included Flying Lotus playing songs by artists that directly influenced the sound on Kendrick’s sophomore major label LP. Listeners got to hear tracks by Funkadelic, Dr. Dre, J Dilla, Bilal, Ice Cube, Lalah Hathaway, The Isley Brothers, and more.

Kendrick provided commentary about the project:

The ideas and influences from this album was me collecting every little bit of music that I’ve learned to live with and love since the day I was born – my father’s influences from oldies to gangsta rap. That was it for me, and not be in fear to show the influences.

A lot of artists get to a point where we like to stay redundant, we like to stay compromising what we really want to do. I said I wasn’t going to do that on this album. I give that advice to any artist out there. Do what your heart tells you to do, because the rewards are even that much better.

Flying Lotus contributed to K. Dot’s To Pimp A Butterfly. He co-produced the album opener “Wesley’s Theory.” The L.A. native has released his own critically acclaimed projects such as Los AngelesUntil the Quiet Comes, and You’re Dead!

“Working with Kendrick was like one of the best things that happened to me in the last few years of my life. [He’s] a real creative genius, very exploratory and open to different perspectives creatively,” said Fly Lo. “From the minute we started working I definitely felt the connection to what was happening.”
