Tyler, The Creator Offers ‘Flower Boy’ Album As A Limited Edition Cassette Tape Bundle

(AllHipHop News) Are audio cassettes becoming the new vinyl?

The supposedly dead option for music consumption is experiencing a rise in public interest again.

Recently, we’ve seen Hip Hop veterans such as Raekwon, Eminem, and Jay-Z present projects via the format popularized in the 1970s and 1980s.

Now Tyler, The Creator is offering his fans a cassette version of his new Flower Boy album as well.

“iight yall asked so why not. gonna be a while, but yeah,” wrote the California rapper in a caption for an Instagram photo of the limited edition bundle.

Vintage items, such as cassettes, become trendy again because older consumers embrace the nostalgia of their youth and a new generation of customers discover the product.

According to Billboard, cassette album sales increased 74% in 2016 (129,000 copies).

43% of those cassettes were sold on the internet, 33% of the purchases came from independent retailers, and 21% were bought at non-traditional music stores like Urban Outfitters.

In 2016, twenty-five albums sold more than 1,000 copies on cassette as compared to only eight albums in 2015.

Like the popular Record Store Day, which is used to promote the sale of vinyl recordings, there is also a Cassette Store Day.

This year’s Cassette Store Day is scheduled for October 14.
