Angel opens the song by sharing past conversations she had with her mother concerning whether she was straight or gay. She raps, “At age 13 my mother knew I wasn’t straight/ She didn’t understand but she had so much to say/ She sat me on the couch, looked me straight in my face/ She said, ‘You’ll burn in hell or probably die of AIDS.” The Detroit native goes on to address religious condemnation, suicide, and the universality of love.
Angel is set to release her debut album Dirty Gold via Universal Republic in 2014. She dropped the New York EP and the Classick mixtape in 2012. The 22-year-old’s buzzing career led to her be selecting as one of XXL’s Freshman Class members for 2013.
