West Coast rapper Big Wy is back with a new visual as he preps for the release of the “The Evolution of Bangin On Wax” project, a follow up to the highly influential “Bangin on Wax” project released in the early 90’s. The project was crucial to helping stop beef amongst Bloods and Crips in South Central and was designed to keep all of the street issues on wax, as opposed to handling beef in the streets. The original project was released on Dangerous Record and was so successful it even charted on the Billboard 200 reaching as high as #86, and eventually was RIAA Certified gold after selling over 500k copies.
(AllHipHop News) Samuel L. Jackson isn’t convinced that “Black Panther’s” huge success will be repeated for other black-led films.
The critically acclaimed Marvel hit, with features a predominantly black cast, is the highest-grossing superhero movie and has just surpassed “Titanic” as the North American box office’s third top-grossing title of all time.
However, Jackson, who has starred in over 100 films including numerous Marvel flicks, has attributed “Black Panther’s” success to the fact that it’s a superhero movie.
“I’m not positive that ‘Black Panther’ is going to change the dynamic of black stories being told in Hollywood and being accepted all over the world,” Jackson, 69, told Vogue Man, explaining that its positioning in the action-genre makes it more accessible to mainstream audiences.
“It’s an action-adventure story and a lot of people like those, and they’ll work all over the world forever because everybody loves a hero. But not everybody loves a drama about somebody’s life experience – that’s why awards have a separate category for foreign films; they are perceived as being different,” he explained. “Once we stop perceiving them as different and just see them as good films and they get recognized in the same category, we’ll be laying markers.”
The movie veteran is currently shooting a sequel to 2000 film “Shaft” titled “Son of Shaft,” a follow-up to the remake of the 1971 blaxploitation film.
And he explained that Hollywood still has some way to go when it comes to representing certain black characters onscreen.
“When we started the film, the producers wanted to make an action comedy, and I told them that you can’t make John Shaft a comedic character,” he said. “He can be funny, but he has to be strong, dynamic, and charismatic in all the ways that he was because he is part of our (African-American) mythology… He was a hero and one of the first people we saw to be that kind of a character,” the Oscar nominee added.

(AllHipHop News) Beyonce and Jay-Z won’t shy away from the “hard subjects” of their marital troubles and infidelity on their upcoming tour, the singer’s stepfather has insisted.
The “Formation” singer and the rap mogul recently announced plans to launch the On The Run II trek this summer, kicking off in Cardiff, Wales on June 6 and wrapping in Vancouver, Canada on October 2.
And “Poltergeist” actor Richard Lawson, who is married to Beyonce’s mother Tina Knowles, has predicted the couple’s live performance, following Jay-Z’s shock admission of past infidelities, will reflect the honesty of their recent music.
“Well, look at what they’ve been through in the last couple of years in terms of the things that they’ve confronted and the way that they’ve put it into art,” Richard told People Now. “This is gonna be really a culmination of their growth and their ability to really confront the hard subjects and the hard issues.”
Jay admitted during an interview on David Letterman’s Netflix series “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman” that he and Beyonce are “in a better place today,” thanks to therapy and the singer’s willingness to forgive him, which doesn’t surprise the star of new legal drama series “In Contempt.”
“Beyonce is one of the sweetest people in the world,” said Richard. “She’s still 16 years old at her heart – she still laughs like a 16-year-old.
“She has more care and more concern and more love for humanity. She has more integrity, she’s a creative soul, she has a big, big, big, big, big vision about how to do things,” the 71-year-old continued. “She’s always moving the needle. I cannot tell you how proud I am of her and just how much I appreciate knowing such a large spirit. She’s an incredible human being.”
And according to Lawson, the talent firmly runs in the family – to the couple’s six-year-old daughter Blue and their 21-month-old twins Rumi and Sir Carter.
“They have two new children and then there’s an evolving young lady, Blue, who’s six, who is evolving herself and she runs the world,” the proud grandfather smiled.
New Orleans rapper Dee-1 releases new visuals for his single “I Don’t Want To Let You Down” off his album Slingshot David. Directed by Dee-1 (shot & edited by Ben Simmons), the video taps into the New Orleans streets where he tells the story of a musical subculture where kids support their families entertaining tourists in the French Quarters. This story is only one of the many stories that exist across the United States, where kids pitch in to help provide for their families.
“I chose this as the narrative for this song when I met Zedrick and his friends walking down Bourbon Street. It was so late and I couldn’t understand how these kids were out here oppose to being at home doing homework,” states Dee-1*. “At this point, I felt that it was my duty to shine some light on a topic that is plaguing the youth.”*
(AllHipHop News) Cardi B. feels like an “animal in the zoo” because of all the attention on her.
The 25-year-old shot to fame upon the release of her 2017 single “Bodak Yellow,” from her new debut album Invasion of Privacy, and admitted during an interview on radio show “Sway in the Morning” on Tuesday that coping with the new interest in her life has been difficult.
“When I was doing my album these past couple of months, my privacy has been invaded the most,” said Cardi, who is expecting her first child with rapper fiance Offset. “I feel like I give people a lot and people still want more. When it comes to my pregnancy, I had people harassing me, stalking me. If it’s not something about me, it’s something about my man. It was just crazy, I really felt like I was an animal in the zoo.”
Despite the record being her first, Cardi has already received huge praise from her celebrity fans, including Rihanna.
However, she added that the pressure to keep releasing hit tracks has also taken its toll – and she enjoyed the process of releasing music more when she was a little-known musician.
“When I was putting music out (before) I was having such a good time, like ‘Woop’,” she said. “Now it’s just like pressure, pressure, pressure, pressure, pressure. Like, ‘She might be a one hit wonder’, or, ‘Remember how female artists used to be back in the day?’ I don’t care – don’t compare me to nobody. This is a new age, it’s a new thing – and I just don’t care for none of that.
“To me, it’s not been easy writing. This has been the hardest thing ever. It’s not easy to focus on a song because the type of pressure everyone has put on me. Like, at first when I was doing music it was fun and I was so eager to get in the studio all the time. Now, I get anxiety when I go to the studio because everybody is like expecting some crazy magic from me. Stop expecting that everything is going to be a number one.”
(AllHipHop News) Drake has reportedly snagged a break as he fends off a lawsuit filed by producer Detail.
Detail, real name Noel Fisher, sued Drake in June 2016, insisting the rap star’s security guard Chubbs fractured his jaw during an assault at Drake’s Calabasas property in 2014.
It seems the case has fallen apart because Detail has declined to respond to any communications from Drizzy’s legal team.
Detail also abstained from a hearing deposition and a medical exam in February as well. After sanctions did not produce Detail, the judge reportedly dismissed the entire case against Drake.

(AllHipHop Features) Back in January, I got the chance to step into a lavish mansion in Norcross, Georgia in order to witness the filming of the Joel Silver-produced remake of Superfly. The contemporary version of the 1972 Blaxploitation classic is being guided by acclaimed visionary Julien “Director X” Lutz
Director X became a music video icon through his work with Usher (“U Don’t Have to Call”), Nelly (“Hot in Herre”), Drake (“Hotline Bling”), Rihanna (“Work”), and other superstars. While the Toronto native’s filmography includes serving as a visual consultant for his mentor Hype Williams’ groundbreaking Belly and controlling the rudder for the Across The Line indie film, Superfly marks the 42-year-old’s first time in the director’s chair for a major studio production.
“Filmmaking is filmmaking. It’s the same camera, the same equipment, the same crew,” says X. “Here’s the big secret to directing: point the camera at the person moving their lips. You should be alright from there. It’s the beginning steps.”
Director X spent a lot of time pointing the camera at Trevor Jackson (American Crime, Grown-ish). The actor/vocalist’s “swagger” and “style” led to Superfly architects selecting him to star as the movie’s central character, Youngblood Priest.
Jackson was joined by Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton), Michael K. Williams (The Wire), and Jacob Ming-Trent (White Famous) as cast members for the motion picture. Hip Hop artists Big Boi and Rick Ross also make appearances. Additionally, Lex Scott Davis (Toni Braxton: Unbreak My Heart) and Andrea Londo (Narcos) took on the respective roles of Priest’s polyamorous girlfriends Georgia and Cynthia.
In the original Super Fly, Priest was involved with two women as well, but it was not clear if the paramours knew about each other. Director X decided the 2018 edition needed to be more reflective of a progressive Millennial view on relationships.
“I said we’re going to modernize it. [Priest] has a black girl and a Latina, and they’re together. F-ck it. [laughs] At least this one is respecting the craziness,” X explains. “They’re all adults, they’re all with it. That’s their business. It might be unconventional, but it’s theirs. As opposed to a man that’s sleeping with one girl and then goes over to sleep with another girl. There’s no way to make this conventional, so I embraced what it was. I said, ‘Alright, let’s step it up for the 21st century.’”
He adds, “After things like House Of Cards, where Claire Underwood is a boss, we said these characters have to play a role with Priest, as opposed to a role in drug dealing. It makes you look at the relationship and say, ‘Okay, I get it. That’s different, but I get that.’ They’re his counselors and his life partners.’”
Fans of Gordon Parks Jr.’s Super Fly should expect other updates to the story. However, the man formerly known as Little X is cautious about falling into similar traps as Total Recall, Ghostbusters, and Ghost In The Shell – recent remakes that rubbed some moviegoers the wrong way by rejecting the spirit of the near-sacred origin.
“I’m a nerd and I lived through the Dark Age of comic books when people would take the things we love and just change it up,” says Director X during a dinner break for the late-night shoot. “So when we decided to remake Superfly, I told them, ‘We need to respect the source material. We can’t just take the name and f-ck it all up.’”
Besides being a time capsule of street culture in 1970s America, the original Super Fly is also remembered for its masterful music appendage, conceived by legendary Soul singer-songwriter Curtis Mayfield. The soundtrack for 2018’s Superfly will reflect the present times by being the brainchild of a modern-day crooner.
Nayvadius “Future” Wilburn is overseeing the audio project. The Trap virtuoso is also credited as a producer for the movie. Future and Director X’s Superfly union was the result of their previous alliance for a retailer’s ad.
“I wanted the current sound of Atlanta, so I hunted [Future] down. We were doing the Gap commercial with him and Cher. I normally don’t mix things up, but we just started talking about [working on Superfly] on set,” X recalls.
The Super Slimey rapper is sure to infuse his southern sound into Superfly. Future’s hometown plays a significant role in the film in other ways as well. Director X was insistent his Youngblood Priest tale took place in the ATL.
“Harlem in the 70s was the epicenter of black culture. If it was a big deal in Harlem, it was a big deal around the world. Now Atlanta is the epicenter of black culture. If it’s a big deal in Atlanta, it’s a big deal around the world. This is where the culture has moved to,” declares the filmmaker. “Does any city have the consistent musical presence that Atlanta has right now? It’s not a discussion.”
As I watched Director X call the shots for a party scene in the North Atlanta residence, it was apparent he brought that artistic eye he used for Kendrick Lamar’s “King Kunta” and Miguel’s “Sky Walker” to the new Superfly adaptation. It seems the Atlantic Film Festival award winner is looking to simultaneously honor the ‘72 action drama about a hustler trying to escape the criminal lifestyle, and also re-establish the Blaxploitation genre as respectable cinema.
“Most people didn’t watch Super Fly, but you know Super Fly. It had that kind of power. Even before I watched Super Fly, I knew Super Fly was about a drug dealer that wanted to make a million bucks and get out of the game. That’s a lot of knowledge about a movie you haven’t seen. It meant something,” offers X. “The original Super Fly is a street movie. Those were street men talking street talk. After [the 1988 comedy] I’m Gonna G## You Sucka, people started associating the 70s with being funny. But that sh-t wasn’t all funny.”
So why is Director X revisiting this Nixon-era narrative nearly half a century later? He simply replies, “It was time. The universe has ways of working things out. Blaxploitation films – everyone wanted to start making them again. So here we are.”
Superfly is scheduled to hit theaters on June 15 via Sony Pictures. Follow the movie on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
(AllHipHop News) Back in 2001, Mariah Carey went through a public meltdown that had many observers questioning the legendary diva’s psychological state. It turns out MC was actually diagnosed with bipolar disorder around that time.
Carey spoke out for the first time about her battle with the mental health issue characterized by periods of depression and mania. The four-decade entertainment veteran addressed the diagnosis in a cover story for People.
“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” said Mariah. “It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.”
Carey was hospitalized in ’01 for “extreme exhaustion” and a “physical and emotional breakdown.” While some critics at the time maintained the megastar’s career was over, MC connected with Jermaine Dupri to craft 2005’s highly successful comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi.
The singles “We Belong Together” and “Don’t Forget About Us” hit #1 on the Hot 100 chart. In addition, Emancipation earned 10 Grammy nominations. The LP won three honors at the 48th annual ceremony – Best Contemporary R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance (“We Belong Together”), and Best R&B Song (“We Belong Together”).
‘I’m just in a really good place right now, where I’m comfortable discussing my struggles with bipolar II disorder,” the singer-songwriter told People. “I’m hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone. It can be incredibly isolating. It does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me.”
(AllHipHop News) Who is the originator of Trap music? Over the last few days, T.I. and Gucci Mane have been going back-and-forth on social media over the title.
Gucci posted a picture on Instagram with the caption, “#FBF The Day I Invented Trap Music.” Guwop also tweeted, “I’m the King Of Trap You Should Call Me Sire and I want stop stunting til.”

The caption for the vid reads:

(AllHipHop News) Many people believe Meek Mill was wrongly imprisoned following reports of widespread misconduct involving Philadelphia’s police force. Since a judge sent him back behind bars for probation violation, the Dream Chasers leader has received a lot of support from the public.
New England Patriots Owner Robert Kraft is among those individuals backing Meek. The billionaire businessman went to visit the Wins & Losses album creator and spoke to the press afterward.
“He’s an amazing young man. I know how I’d feel if I was in the situation he is,” said Kraft. “Every time I see him, I just come away more impressed. He’s very intelligent. And makes it clear to me we have to do something with criminal justice reform.”
Kraft added, “I know some of our players in the NFL have talked about this, and I see firsthand that it’s just wrong. We have to find a way to correct it. Also, help the community help themselves.
Meek Mill (born Robert Williams) is currently serving 2- 4 years. However, the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office has stated prosecutors are not opposed to Williams being released on bail.
(AllHipHop News) Some people wonder why Cardi B didn’t cancel her upcoming Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival appearances after announcing she’s pregnant. The reason could be the amount of money involved with the event.
Cardi did an interview with SiriusXM’s Hip Hop Nation where she talked about the popular Indio, California function. The conversation included the “Be Careful” rapper discussing her pay scale for the fest.
“We been booked Coachella like six months, seven months ago. I’m getting paid for Coachella like 70 bandos a day,” said Cardi. “I have to invest so much money on my stage set – my own money, I gotta go to Wells Fargo and write a check – that it’s crazy. It’s almost 300 thou.”
She added, “It’s an investment. You gotta take that to the chin. But it’s like, ‘Damn it. Right after I just finished paying my damn taxes.'”
Coachella is scheduled for April 13-15 and April 20-22. Besides Cardi, the lineup also includes Beyoncé, Eminem, SZA, Migos, Post Malone, Vince Staples, and Tyler, The Creator.

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Eve lost control of her emotions during a meeting with Janet Jackson at a party after realizing someone had spiked her drink.
The “Who’s That Girl” hitmaker was at an award show afterparty several years ago when she started to feel strange and felt sure someone had slipped a date rape drug into her cocktail.
“I started feeling crazy and not drunk and I knew immediately something was different and it was weird because I was there, but I wasn’t there…,” she said on chat show The Talk on Monday. “Whoever I was with, I tapped them on the shoulder and said, ‘Something is wrong’, and they were like, ‘No you’re just drunk’, and I started hysterically crying…”
The rapper was escorted into a room to calm down and was floored when fellow party guest Janet Jackson took control of the strange situation.
“I hear this really soft voice that’s like, ‘It’s OK, Ill take care of it’, and I’m, like, snot crying, and I turn around and its Janet Jackson…,” she added. “I was so embarrassed and I was like, ‘I didn’t want to meet you like this…'”
(AllHipHop News) Rapper Cardi B has followed Beyonce’s lead by pulling out of a major festival after revealing she’s pregnant.
Beyonce ditched Coachella in California last year, after going public with the news she was expecting twins, and now organizers of Britain’s Wireless Festival have been left scrambling to find a replacement for the “Bodak Yellow” star following her weekend pregnancy confirmation.
The rapper showed off her baby bump during a performance of her new song “Be Careful” on “Saturday Night Live,” and promptly axed her appearance at the event.
The news doesn’t seem to have fazed Wireless Festival bosses, who quickly assured fans they have a replacement lined up.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BhWHog6FdbJ/
“Huge news over the weekend… Unfortunately, this means she won’t be performing at Wireless this year,” they wrote on Instagram. An announcement about the line-up is expected on Thursday.
Cardi’s big reveal wasn’t welcomed by everyone, with some trolls criticizing her for the way she confirmed the baby news on TV and others taking aim at her for falling pregnant as her career takes off.
“This is why I did not wanted to say nothing,” she snapped back in a now-deleted Instagram Story post. “People be so thirsty to scrutinize and try to destroy something that it suppose to be a blessing.”
Meanwhile, Beyonce will make up for her no-show at Coachella last year by headlining this year’s event over the next two weekends, alongside Eminem and The Weeknd.
Wireless will still feature Cardi’s baby daddy Offset and his band Migos, DJ Khaled, Stormzy, J. Cole, Big Sean, and Post Malone.
