N.W.A.’s Publicist : Without Jerry Heller, No Snoop, No Kendrick, No Death Row

(AllHipHop News) Without Jerry Heller, N.W.A. would not have made their meteoric rise to dominance, said the group’s former publicist.

“Jerry took the risk of taking a mortgage out on his home to finance NWA’s first tour,” publicist/journalist Phyllis Pollack told AllHipHop exclusively of her longtime friend. Pollack served as the publicist for Ruthless Records. “Jerry loved Eazy like a son. Jerry’s involvement on various levels let to the release of Straight Outta Compton, arguable the most important album of the 20th Century. And the lyrics remain relevant today with the Black Lives Matter movement and the other topics on the album.”

Heller died yesterday at the age of 75.

Heller helped Eazy-E turn Ruthless Records into one of the most successful, profitable and influential record labels ever. Pollack said Heller and Eazy-E were unable to secure a deal for the music the artists were created, loosely called gangster rap or reality rap.

“Jerry’s devotion to Eric would not let him give up helping Eric pursue his dream, despite the album [Straight Outta Compton] being turned down by every major label,” she said.

A polarizing figure of sorts, Pollack said that Heller was underappreciated even though his impact can be felt all over Hip-Hop to this day.

“After Eric died, I think Jerry died of a broken heart. All of us owe Jerry a bit of gratitude, said Pollack. “Had there been no Ruthless, there would have never been a Death Row, a Snoop Dogg, MC Eiht (of seminal rap group Compton’s Most Wanted) or Kendrick Lamar.”

Misinformation has plagued Jerry Heller’s legacy, Pollack said. For example, he was not a co-owner of Ruthless Records and worked for Eazy-E. The movie “Straight Outta Compton” contributed to the notion that Heller was the reason for the dismantling of N.W.A., but Pollack told AllHipHop that the movie is largely a creative product of Hollywood.

She said, “Despite the fictionalized storyline of the movie about the group (N.W.A.), Ruthless was the first Black owned Hip-Hop label to have gold and platinum releases.”

According to reports, Jerry Heller died as a result of a heart attack, which lead to a car accident.

Gucci Mane Will Soon Release New Album Entitled “Woptober” (TWEETS)

(AllHipHop News) Gucci mane recently took to Twitter where he revealed that the name of his upcoming album will be Woptober.

Following the post-prison release of his album Everybody Looking, Gucci Mane shared a series of Instagram posts featuring small clips of audio with the hashtag #woptober and not much more.

In a string of tweets posted yesterday, the rapper not only offered some clarity on the #woptober hashtag, but also stated that his track with Travis Scott “Last Time,” is the first single to be featured on the Woptober project.

Gucci is also reported to be working on a joint project with Drake The Sixers.

The upcoming project Woptober is yet to have a tracklist or set release date.

Amber Rose previously had O.T. Genasis as a guest on her talk show, The Amber Rose show, where she revealed that 50 Cent allegedly offered her a role on ‘Power’ but he needed an answer from her immediately.

Amber says she was turned off by the demand because she’s not one of these convenient b*tches, and she actually has a schedule with work and being a mom.

O.T. Genasis defended 50 by saying that he was probably joking, and he has one of those personalities that most don’t understand.

50 Cent says he never talked to Amber Rose ever, but he feels that it was cool that she mentioned the show.

50 also showed a mature side by revealing that he apologized to Wiz Khalifa after once rapping about Rose on a track.

Lil Wayne Threatens To Hang Up The Mic After Cops Called To Miami Mansion

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Lil Wayne has threatened to hang up the mic altogether after another prank phone call sent police to his mansion in Miami yesterday (September 2).

Wayne posted the shocking messages just hours after a fake call to 911 to report a shooting at his house resulted in police showing up to his house for the second time in a year.

“I AM NOW DEFENSELESS AND mentally DEFEATED & I leave gracefully and thankful I luh my fanz but I’m dun. ain’t lookin for sympathy, just serenity,” Lil Wayne tweeted today (September 3).

Thankfully it was a hoax like the first call, which was placed in March of 2015.

The incident, along with his on going legal issues with Cash Money appear to have Weezy frustrated.

Last weekend at his 2nd annual Lil Weezyana Fest, the rapper continued his assault on his former label, telling the home crowd, “I want to say three more important words… f##k Cash Money.”

Tank Checks Perez Hilton Over Controversial Chris Brown Coverage

The very controversial celebrity blogger, Perez Hilton, recently ruffled some feathers in regards to his coverage of Chris Brown’s alleged assault case.

While Brown doesn’t have a squeaky clean record, this time many are speaking out in defense of the singer’s alleged innocence.

Singer Tank was one of those people fed up with Hilton’s coverage. He went in on Perez for being an irresponsible journalist and for failing to be objective.

Tank failed to realize it would fall on deaf ears, and Perez would continue to be controversial because he is everything but a journalist. Tank posted a message for Perez on his Instagram that read,

“@theperezhilton and people like you IS THERE A PROBLEM? These types of people get to say anything out they mouth and because we’re celebrities we have to turn the other cheek. A lot of people on this side are fed up and I promise you it’s not gone end well for some of you. I respect everybody until disrespected!”

Perez even decided to taunt Tank by saying he didn’t know who he was, and he would have to do a google search to see what he did for a living.

Tank advised Perez to keep it light because,

“He’s the right one.”

John Legend Explains Why It’s Time To Change The National Anthem (POLL)

John Legend has called on U.S. politicians to change the country’s national anthem.

The “All of Me” singer is supporting American footballer Colin Kaepernick, who recently stirred up controversy by announcing he would not stand for the Star Spangled Banner before games until there is a “significant change” in the oppression of U.S. people due to their race, and he insists it’s time to change the tune.

Legend has taken to Twitter to offer up an article which suggests Francis Scott Key’s anthem features an often unsung verse which “literally celebrates the murder of African-Americans”.

Calling the current anthem “weak”, the singer/songwriter offers up an alternative, stating: “My vote is for America the Beautiful.”

He adds: “For those defending the current anthem, do you really truly love that song? I don’t and I’m very good at singing it. Like, one of the best.”

Kaepernick hit headlines last weekend, after it was noted he had refused to stand for the anthem during the San Francisco 49ers pre-season games.

Asked about his decision, he told NFL Media, “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.

“To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

His comments appeared to be aimed at the spate of killings of African-Americans at the hands of white police officers.

The sickening trend hit new heights this summer and resulted in the sniper deaths of five cops patrolling a Black Lives Matter rally in Texas.

EXCLUSIVE: N.W.A.’s Original Manager Jerry Heller Dies, 75

(AllHipHop News) Jerry Heller, the original manager for N.W.A., has died according to sources with AllHipHop.com. He was 75.

The business man was widely recognized as the man that helped bring the controversial group to the masses along with Eazy-E.

The cause of death is not yet known.

As a manager and business man, Heller began representing mainstream acts like Journey, Marvin Gaye, Joan Armatrading, Van Morrison, War, Average White Band, Ike & Tina Turner, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Otis Redding, The Who, Grand Funk Railroad, Black Sabbath, Humble Pie, Styx, REO Speedwagon, Four Tops, and many more in the 1960’s and 70’s. However, when he started working with Hip-Hop pioneer Eric “Eazy-E” Wright, Heller’s career took on new life.

He was the co-founder of Ruthless Records with Eazy-E, a label that sold over 100 million records and launched the music careers of Wright, N.W.A., Michel’le, J.J. Fad, The D.O.C.,Above The Law and others.

In a 2006 interview with AllHipHop.com, Heller explained why he gravitated to West Coast rap music.

“I liked [West Coast Hip-Hop] because it was more melodic than East Coast Hip-Hop. Besides, whatever else it was, it had a sense a humor, which I didn’t think East coast Hip-Hop had,” Heller explained. “I started to manage some of the West coast groups, mainly the World Class Wrecking Cru, who were with Alonzo Williams, who I think is one of the most important guys in the history of West Coast Hip-Hop.”

At the time of death, Heller was embroiled in a lawsuit over his portrayal in the 2015 hit movie “Straight Outta Compton.” Heller felt the movie – produced by former N.W.A. members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, defamed him. A large part of the suit was dismissed in court earlier this summer.

Heller had a particularly contentious relationship with Ice Cube, who was the first to leave N.W.A. over money issues. His and Eazy’s relationship with Dr. Dre would soon sour and the sonic producer would go on to found competing brand Death Row Records.

“Ruthless: A Memoir, “Heller’s memoir, was published by Simon & Schuster in 2006.

Rapper King T, a West Coast Staple, sent a message on his social media. As AllHipHop broke the story, others began to send out their condolences, including DJ Chris “The Glove” Taylor, legendary radio jock Greg Mack and others from the scene.

Travis Scott’s “Birds in The Trap Sing McKnight” Soars To Top Of Billboard Charts Following Apple Music Release (VIDEO+PIC)

(AllHipHop News) Travis Scott has finally released his highly anticipated sophomore album Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight through Apple Music and the project has already been a resounding success.

According to reports, as soon as the album went live it sky-rocketed to No.1 on Billboard’s Top Hip Hop/Rap Albums Chart and No.2 on iTune’s Overall Top Albums Chart within the first hour.

Also, the G.O.O.D. Music artist personally premiered the new project on his Beats 1 “.wav” radio show and invited the audience to interact as he unveiled the 14 tracks for the first time.

Last month, leading up to the release of his new project, Travis released the Young Thug and Quavo assisted cut “Pick Up The Phone,” which has already accrued over 25.9 million Spotify streams and 2.3 million YouTube/VEVO views for its music video.

The rapper is also set to perform at Jay-Z’s Made In America event in Philadelphia September 4.

Does Rihanna’s New Tattoo Have Significance To Drake?

Kevin Gates Heartlessly Laughs At Louisiana Flood Victims

Kevin Gates is so disappointing sometimes. They say one should try to find humor in everything to deal with it, but somethings should be off limits.

When asked about how he felt President Obama dealt with the Louisiana floods, Gates laughed and joked saying,

“They should’ve got an ark.”

Gates heartlessly laughed as thousands suffered as a result of the natural disaster.

This isn’t the first time he’s made an insensitive remark in regards to the Louisiana floods. He said some people [his sister] make you mad that you prayed for them.

Kanye’s Controversial “Famous” Sculptures Are Not Up For Sale

(AllHipHop News) A representative for Kanye West has shut down reports the sculptures from the rapper’s “Famous” music video are on sale for $4 million .

The life-like nudes from the hip-hop star’s controversial promo were on display at Los Angeles’ Blum & Poe Art Gallery last week and the gallery’s co-founder, Tim Blum, suggested to The New York Times that the entire set of sculptures was on sale for the six-figure price tag.

However, a representative for West told Pitchfork the art is not available for purchase at all, since they are planning on bringing the piece to other galleries for viewing.

“We are incredibly flattered that a number is being reported but at no point have we ever disclosed a sale price for the piece,” a statement from his rep reads. “Once again we are flattered by such interest, but as far as Mr. West is concerned – it’s all about the art. We are looking forward to announcing when Famous will be available again for viewing.”

Just like the Hip-Hop star’s music video, the 12 silicone versions of celebrities and public figures, including West, his wife Kim Kardashian, his ex-girlfriend Amber Rose, Kim’s ex-boyfriend Ray J, Taylor Swift, Chris Brown, and Bill Cosby, are displayed on a long horizontal bed together, and even have animatronic features to make it look like they’re breathing.

Kardashian and her sister Kendall Jenner visited the exhibition on Friday, and Kanye’s proud wife took to Twitter to share a shot of herself standing in front of the waxwork figures with Kanye smiling on a TV screen next to her.

In the New York Times article, Blum said he and music executive Scooter Braun are “actively shopping the piece’s next home.”

(AllHipHop News) Los Angeles emcee Murs has invited several high-profile people to appear on his online series Where You At? LA. YG, Damon Dash, B-Real, and DJ Quik are among the guests that have stopped by for the event.

WYALA features performances, interviews, and freestyles from LA-based entertainers and entrepreneurs. The September 7 edition of the live show will see The Dogg Pound, W.C. with DJ Crazy Toones, and celebrity chef Roy Choi in attendance.

This will be the fourth installment of the Boost Mobile presented showcase. Fans can live stream the show on the wireless service company’s Facebook and Periscope accounts.

The final Where You At? LA episode on September 28 will include Murs attempting to rap for 24 hours. The Strange Music artist spoke with AllHipHop.com in July about his ambitious rhyming feat.

“It’s not going to be a freestyle. I’ll leave that to the champion, Supernatural. It’s going to be like rap karaoke,” explained Murs. “I’m going to do some of my own songs, some songs from my new album that no one’s heard yet, and some songs that I never put out that I really like.”

He added, “I’m going to try to learn the words to [Desiigner’s]  “Panda” as well. That will be hilarious.”

DJ Khaled Celebrates Being Named Host Of 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards

(AllHipHop News) The 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards will get the DJ Khalid treatment. The event had been hosted by Snoop Dogg for years, but Khalid is taking over the September 17 event.

The Miami-based entertainer used his social media accounts to celebrate the announcement of his new gig. He wrote on one Instagram post, “Be ready!! Fan luv !! I got us !!!”

The chart topper added in a press release, “I am extremely honored to be a part of such an incredible show that has watched me grow as an artist and mogul throughout my career. The Hip Hop Awards are synonymous with a night of stellar performances and tributes to the greatest hip hop artists of our time. I am excited to bring cloth talk and the major keys to the Hip Hop Awards for an iconic and memorable show!”

Khalid just served as one of the masters of ceremonies for the MTV Video Music Awards Pre-Show. He was joined by Charlamagne Tha God of The Breakfast Club and Lizzo of Wonderland.

Drake goes into the Hip Hop Awards with the most nominations (14). The OVO leader is followed by Future with 10 and Kanye West with 8.

Besides hosting duties, Khaled is also up for 9 trophies at the award show. The Major Key album creator has the chance to win “DJ of the Year,” “Best Hip-Hop Video,” “MVP of the Year,” “Track of the Year,” “Album of the Year” and other honors.

BMI R&B/Hip Hop Awards Honors Toni Braxton, Performances From DJ Khaled, Ludacris & More

Broadcast Music Inc. celebrated the songwriters and publishers of the year for the first time in Atlanta last night during the 2016 BMI R&B & Hip Hop Awards.

The award show was held at the swanky Woodruff Arts Center’s Symphony Hall and saw performances from DJ Khaled, Ludacris, Kent Jones, Rich Homie Quan, and Rae Sremmurd.

The top honors of the evening went to Charlie Puth and Wiz Khalifa for “See You Again” (Song of the Year), Universal Music Publishing Group, (Publisher of the Year), and Metro Boomin (Producer of the Year).

The legend, the icon, Grammy Award-winner, Toni Braxton, took home the night’s most prestigious honor when she was presented with the BMI President’s Award in recognition of her unparalleled musical career, contributions to and impact on popular music as a whole. The R&B diva has had an incredibly successful music career for 25 years!

Before Toni Braxton took the stage to accept her BMI President’s award the songstress was serenaded by a tribute that included Donald Lawrence & Company, her sisters The Braxtons, Ledisi, and Yolanda Adams.

Donald Lawrence & Company sung “You Mean the World to Me”, The Braxtons; “Breathe Again”, Ledisi; “Seven Whole Days,” Yolanda Adams; “Un-break My Heart, and Toni took the stage to perform her hit “He Wasn’t Man Enough For Me” after accepting her award from the legendary music executive L.A. Reid.

The evening was hosted by actor and comedian Chris Tucker alongside BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill and BMI Vice President, Writer/Publisher Relations, Catherine Brewton

Chris Tucker certainly brought the funny by imitating some of your favorite artists and cracking jokes on those in attendance. DJ Khaled and Ludacris turned the energy up a notch when they performed “All I Do Is Win.” Kent Jones rocked the stage with his hit “Don’t Mind,” and Rae Sremmurd surely turned up the evening as people danced to their performance of “No Type” Rich Homie performed “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” as well as received a BMI Award for the single.

El-P Gives Update On Expected ‘Run The Jewels 3’ 2016 Release

(AllHipHop News) Hip Hop duo Run The Jewels has released two critically acclaimed albums since 2013. Fans of the group are hopeful the third installment of the RTJ LP series arrives before the end of 2016.

El-P took to Twitter to give an update on Run The Jewels 3. The rapper-producer revealed that he and Killer Mike are still finalizing the project.

A track expected to be presented on the forthcoming RTJ3 titled “Panther Like A Panther (I’m The Sh-t)” is also the soundtrack for the Gears of War 4 trailer. The partnership includes “RTJxGoW4” merchandise as well.

Hit The Street: Young Thug New Album Cover

Young Thug aka Jeffery has been the topic of conversation before anyone even heard his new album.

Jeffery shared the cover for his album No, My Name is Jeffery, which features him posing in what seems to be a dress of some sort.

The piece is actually part of Italian designer Alessandro Trincone’s “Annodami” collection. The album cover outfit inspired by Japanese kimonos and trousers had all social media outlets in an uproar.

Many feel that this bold move isn’t a good move for the culture at all. While many feel Thuggers’ bold move isn’t an issue at all. Even Hip-Hop icons such as T.I. and Erykah Badu came to the defense of the Atlanta born rapper.

(AllHipHop News) Chris Brown has had his issues with the law in the past. However, the latest story about Brown supposedly pulling a gun on a woman named Baylee Curran seems to be unraveling.

First, it has been reported that Curran is suspected of being a known thief and liar. Then supposed text messages from the night of the alleged incident included her saying she planned to frame Brown because she was angry over being kicked out of his house party.

Brown’s lawyer has also claimed that the LAPD did not find a gun at his client’s home. That disputes earlier reports that weapons were confiscated at the location.

Now the prosecutor’s motives in that case are being questioned. According to TMZ, Deputy District Attorney Mary Murray pushed for Brown to be arrested, even though police just wanted to investigate the situation.

Murray prosecuted Brown in the 2009 Rihanna assault case, and she lost probation violation hearings involving the R&B singer. CB has been a vocal critic of the D.A., calling her racist in 2013.

Curran claimed Brown pointed a gun at her head after she was seen looking at jewelry during the party. Chris Brown was taken into custody on a felony assault with a deadly weapon charge. He was released on $250,000 bail.

5 Songs From Frank Ocean’s ‘Blonde’ Debut On Hot 100 Chart

(AllHipHop News) Frank Ocean’s standout run rages on. The Grammy winner’s latest LP Blonde opened at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart with the third-highest opening sales week of 2016.

Tracks from the project are doing well on the Hot 100 chart as well. Five songs made it onto the tally being published on September 10.

“Nikes” (#79), “Ivy” (#80), “Pink + White” (#84), “Solo” (#96) and “Nights” (#98) give Ocean his most entries on the chart at one time. Previously, he only had four career songs on the Hot 100.

Ocean also has six entries in the Top 15 of the Hot R&B Songs chart. The five tracks mentioned above plus “Self Control.”

“Thinkin About You” from Ocean’s debut album channel ORANGE peaked at #32 on the Hot 100 in 2012. The single reached #4 on the Hot R&B Songs chart.
