#TheBusinessBully – The Truth About the Radio Business

I feel like it’s important for people to understand that I’m not just saying things for the sake of being combative. Rather, I feel that it is necessary to educate the public on the truth about the radio industry. My career in the radio industry started in 1987, almost completely by accident. I started in talk radio at the age of 9, and it wasn’t until the late 1990s that I made the transition into what is now considered “mainstream” urban radio. Nothing that I’ve written in this piece is coming from anyplace other than a place of honesty for those who are wondering about how the industry really works.

The general public’s perception of the radio business is so far from the truth that it’s laughable to anyone who actually works in radio.

First, if you are an aspiring hip-hop artist, it is an egregious waste of time to ask your friends and family members to call up to the radio station 50 times a day to request your song in hopes to get it played. To think that all of a sudden someone is going to put you into heavy rotation is utterly ridiculous. Even if you wind up getting into light rotation, it’s not going to be enough for you to actually make the record labels pay attention to you.

On the “bright” side, there are several companies (google them) who’d be happy to take your money to get your record played on the air. But if you have anything less than a $10,000 budget, don’t even bother. Those companies have a lot of palms to grease, and they have to make a profit as well. While your record won’t be officially added into rotation, they will “spike” (play sporadically) your record.

Now before you get into telling me how “illegal” that is, I want you to understand that there are businesses that basically do what COULD BE CONSIDERED money-laundering. They are “independent promotion companies” (known as “indies”) that give radio stations money for “promotions”. That way EVERYONE’S hands are clean. The record label pays the independent promotion company, who then in turn pays the radio station, who then in turn plays the record. And that is how you get around any FCC regulations or potential fines.

Does this happen with every record that gets played on the radio station? The answer is of course not. However it happens a lot more than you think. If you think that Elvis, the Jacksons, or several people you listen to on the air haven’t cut a check, you’re kidding yourself. But let’s go all the way, shall we?

Let’s just say you want to be a radio personality. In this climate, I don’t know how you’re going to pull it off. There was a time when you could be an intern and that was your way into the business. Unfortunately, with companies like IHeartMedia removing the option of internships in many markets, it is next to impossible for you to find your way in if you’re an aspiring talent.

Also let’s just say you do get in. Congratulations! Get ready to be a puppet. Unless you’re some type of comedian, Pseudo celebrity, or washed up celebrity, There is no way they’re going allow you to be creative in any way shape or fashion. The radio industry have a thing where they do not want to cultivate or create talent that elevates itself the level of a superstar. There will NEVER be another Tom Joyner, Rick Party, Doug Banks or Russ Parr. However, there will always be plenty of Rickey Smiley’s, DL Hughley’s and Steve Harvey’s. DJ Khaled is an anomaly who will never be duplicated. The funny thing (no pun intended) is that these same radio companies (who are in many cases) struggling to maintain relevance will give people who have the slightest level of celebrity (but little to no actual training or radio skills) the ability to do whatever they want. These “talents” can show up late or not at all without regard to the amount of money it costs the company or its impact on producers and cohosts. (That’s not calling anyone unprofessional. I’m only talking about what I’ve seen with my own two eyes).

If a full time radio talent asks for resources to improve their show (like a producer or maybe someone to videotape moments to send out for press or awareness like The Breakfast Club), they are told that there’s no money in the budget. However, there’s money to spend on things that make no sense, like TV commercials that are as archaic as a fossil, or a fleet of promotional vehicles which don’t get used (except for making appearances at sporting events or concerts or the same tired nightclubs).

The object of the game for most radio companies is to keep talent in a certain arena. They don’t want to get them to be too large. Because if you create a radio start, then you have to pay them and worse yet, you have to deal with their ego or run the risk of them leaving your station for greener pastures. To be fair there are some great people who are Programmers like Hurricane Dave in ATL or Derrick Brown in Chicago who encourage talent to go for it. Unfortunately, those programmers are rare. Most companies want you to talk about the same things and do things the same way. If you have creativity, it will most likely be wasted.

Oh! How could I forget about the voice tracking (pre recorded and canned shows that are piped between pre-programmed music)!!! 90% of the average radio talent staff isn’t live or local, making the job pool even smaller for potential air personalities. It’s easier to pay a great talent like my good friend T-Roy (who is on in so many markets that I can barely count one) salary, instead of paying 40 full time people 40 sets of salaries and benefits.

Think that radio is a great way to advertise your business? Think again! With the streaming services, and podcasts, there are so many choices fighting for eyes and ears that it’s difficult to gain traction without having the advantage of an ad buy worth thousands of dollars. When you advertise on a podcast, then your ad is there forever and can still give you a better return on investment months and sometimes years later. Think about it: If you’re driving in your car and the commercials come on, what do YOU do? You bounce around until you find some music to listen to just like everyone else.

Also the poor radio salespeople! They have to be mini-promotions directors. That’s when they aren’t forced to push sales “packages” that fit the radio station’s agenda as opposed to making the advertiser more money. Their commissions break down to less than $10 an hour unless they have been grandfathered in and gotten the Lion’s share of the profitable client lists in the market. The turnover rate is about 50% for salespeople in radio. The pressure is intense and many people wind up depressed or in another career after dealing with package pushing and missing quotas.

There’s very little training all the way around and most of the general public don’t understand that what you see or hear isn’t always the truth. People in radio don’t actually wait for the 105th caller to award a prize. They try to find the most excited person they can so that the recorded call sounds exciting. However, most radio stations don’t even have a budget for prizes that many people care about. That is unless you’re counting national (cheap money saving) contests that you have a snowball’s chance in hell of winning

As a person who gladly gave up his childhood and 24 years in the business, I’m happy to be retired. While I don’t have any plans on going back and amidst all of its flaws, I still love the business of radio. I love the music and I love the people. I just don’t like the politics. My truth is as raw as it’s going to get. Most people won’t go on the record and tell you this, but I believe that if you don’t understand the business from many aspects, you’re always going to be at a disadvantage. if you want to learn how to grow your own business, go to http://bit.ly/2JoinTheBully

Kodak Black’s ‘Painting Pictures’ Debuts At No. 3 While Rapper Remains In Jail

(AllHipHop News) Kodak Black may be incarcerated at the moment, but that did not stop the Florida rhymer from releasing an album.

Painting Pictures arrived on March 31.

The project debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 chart with 71,000 equivalent album units collected in its first week (51,000 SEA units, 15,000 traditional album units).

In addition, the video for the tune has over 100 million views on YouTube.

Kodak was arrested in February for allegedly violating his probation.

Drake’s “More Life” Breaks His Own Record With Third Week At #1

(AllHipHop News) Drake has scored a third week on top of the U.S. album charts, becoming the first artist to spend three weeks at number one since he last landed a triple in June.

Back then his album Views went on to spend nine weeks at the summit.

Now it’s the rapper’s More Life that’s landed him multiple weeks at number one.

What’s most impressive is More Life continues to only be available for sale as a download – a planned March 21 release was pushed back to an as-yet-unannounced date.

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) holds at two for a third week in a row, while Kodak Black scores the chart’s highest debut as Painting Pictures lands at three.

Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic jumps back into the top five at four, while the soundtrack to “Beauty and the Beast” slips a spot to five.

Chief Keef Hit With Felony DUI Charge In Miami

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Chief Keef has been charged with driving under the influence following a traffic stop in Miami, Florida over the weekend (April 8).

Police officers booked him on Saturday for felony DUI after he failed a sobriety test.

Cops also found marijuana and other substances in a car trailing his McLaren charged four other people with misdemeanour possession of marijuana, according to TMZ.

Reports suggest cops waved down the two vehicles after witnessing what appeared to be a drug transaction.

Drake’s Goons Pulling Up On XXXtentecion?

(AllHipHop Rumors) That boy XXXtentecion has been talking a lot. Actually, he is not an idiot or wack as far as I can see. He’s just young and talkative. LOL! Anyway, the day has come where dudes jump in front of the bullet for Drake. The boy 600 Breezy is coming to the rescue for Drake, who has XXXtentecion on his bumper for alleged biting. Now, when you hear the two songs, XXXtentecion makes a compelling argument. But in the streets, when Drake is feeding many people, nobody cares. So, now XXXtentecion has some people that may want to see him. Maybe I need to do this and get Drizzy’s attention. In fact, I’ma call myself AAAttention.

Check out what 600 is saying.

Court Orders Soulja Boy To Stop Waving Guns and Threatening People

(AllHipHop News) Soulja Boy has cut a deal in his felony assault weapons possession case, sparing the rapper jail time.

Soulja Boy was arrested in January, after an anonymous person complained to authorities that he had been waving guns and threatening people on social media.

When police raided his Hidden Hills home, they found two firearms inside the residence, including one that had been stolen from a cop.

According to reports, Soulja Boy has cut of plea that will allow him to avoid jail, but he will have to serve five years of probation.

Additionally, the Atlanta rapper must also complete 240 days worth of community service.

Big Soulja is also banned from making threats on social media, or possessing any type of gun, even a replica.

REVIEW: Joey Bada$$’s “All-American Badass (A.A.B.A.)” Will Convert Everybody Into Fans

(AllHipHop Review) After tempting fans with “DEVASTATED” and “LAND OF THE FREE,” (the track titles are intentionally all capitalized) Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ dropped his sophomore effort All-Amerikkkan Badass (A.A.B.A.) on the fifth anniversary of fellow Pro Era founder Capital STEEZ’s “Amerikkkan Korruption” mixtape.

In an interview with Wild 94.1, Joey compared the project to vegetables, saying “It’s almost my hesitance with it: the fact that it’s so good for you, because these kids these days want candy.” He also described “Devastated” as “organic candy” because of the intertwined message. Hopefully Joey can convince people to finish their metaphorical plate, because this album is worth multiple listens.

It’s clear that Joey Bada$$ is on a mission. From start to finish, All-Amerikkkan Badass is peppered with social commentary, forays into education, and overtly uplifting messages for everyone in the struggle. These are his audible vegetables. The album’s leadoff track “GOOD MORNING AMERIKKKA” finds Joey delving into what freedom means and his role as an influencer and persuading fans to “wake up.”

As usual, Joey brought some of his fellow Pro Era members along for the ride with a feature from Kirk Knight and Nyck Caution on “RING THE ALARM” (which also featured Meechy Darko) and production from Kirk Knight and Chuck Strangers. The rest of the beats are handled by 1-900, Dj Khalil, Powers Pleasant, Statik Selektah and Like. Schoolboy Q, Styles P and J. Cole also each drop a verse on different tracks.

Sonically, this album was a big step for Joey Bada$$. The boom bap sound his fans love him for is still present, but he and his producers took a creative approach to it that created a beautiful cohesion. He also seems to have grown melodically and hook-wise and nailed the process of clearly communicating each track’s theme.

Of the 12 songs on this album, “BABYLON” is by far my favorite. It has everything a good song should have: solid production, great bars, relative content, and emotion. A few bars into the first verse, Joey puts some grit in his voice as he expresses his disgust for the seemingly daily murders of young Black men by police in America. He goes on to say “F#ck the system and the government” and point out their many forms of corruption  before paying his respects to Eric Garner, the man choked to death on camera by NYPD.

If you’re a Joey Bada$$ fan, All-Amerikkkan Badass is for you. If you don’t mess with Joey’s older music, All-Amerikkkan Badass is still for you. The sophomore slump is real, and I’m glad to see Joey avoiding it with such a potent, well-crafted album.

You can listen to the album via Spotify.

Chief Keef Detained In Florida; Marijuana Charges Loom

(AllHipHop News) Chicago rapper Chief Keef recently got his driver’s license, and he’s already running into trouble.

According to reports, the Chicago rapper was arrested in Miami in the bright green Lamborghini he’s been showing off on social media earlier today (April 8).

TMZ.com reports that a passenger in Chief Keef’s Lamborghini hopped out of the head turning vehicle in traffic, to talk to people in a car behind him.

Miami Beach cops witnessed the exchange stopped both cars.

When police conducted a search, they found marijuana and detained the rapper as well as four other people for questioning, although Chief Keef has not been charged with any crime as of press time.

Chief Keef has a long history of problems with driving and the 21-year-old finally received an official driver’s license this past March.

Mysonne Accuses Future Of Poisoning Kid’s Minds With Drug Lyrics

(AllHipHop Rumors) It’s no secret that Future’s favorite thing to rap about is DRUGS.

The fact that Future and his music have proven to be pretty influential on the culture for the last few years, it seems largely irresponsible to most.

Rapper Mysonne has been really vocal lately, and he’s had it with Future and some of these other rappers.

Mysonne’s issue with Future is the fact that Future is rapping about moving and using drugs to the masses. Mysonne says folks are dealing with poverty in the streets and they are trying to come up by any means necessary. As youngins, he says kids are very impressionable and will believe that the only way they can get it is to sell drugs.

Mysonne says he wants to see all black men be successful but it’s not okay that Future is poisoning the minds of the kids by telling them that God is blessing all the trap n-ggas and “young n-gga move that dope.”

Mysonne says we all want nice things, but at what expense. He feels like we shouldn’t be sitting back and continuing to support Future’s messages in his music.

He feels like people are blowing off the messages like “that’s not really happening”, and people don’t give him any responsibility, and he gets to get in front of hundreds of thousands of people programming their minds with messages that will put them in jail!

Mysonne says Pusha T’s music can’t be compared to Future’s music because Future’s lacks messages of the consequences of the actions, and lack of real elements in the music. He feels that Future’s music lacks repercussions.

All-in-all, Mysonne isn’t okay with kids listening to such lyrics and throwing their lives away as a result. The New York rapper wants to know what other Hip Hop artists and street-based individuals are doing to be responsible or keep people out of trouble?

He also makes a great point when he says that the labels and execs don’t care about the music because they are making money off of them, and their kids either aren’t listening to the music, or have such a great foundation that they won’t be affected. Kids growing up in the hood take these messages to heart though because they see a person from their block made it, and think that’s the way to make it too! What are your thoughts?

The Game’s Manager Wack 100 Goes In On 40 Glocc Again!

(AllHipHop Rumors) It doesn’t look like The Game, his manager, Wack 100, or 40 Glocc will ever burry the hatchet!

As you know, Wack always has time for a social media rebuttal or essay. Apparently someone asked 40 Glocc how his beef started with Wack.

According to 40, 40 put Wack down with The Game, then Wack allegedly turned on him and starting dissing him. 40 says that Wack isn’t really any type of manager, and that he’s just trying to be seen, so he’s giving himself that title.

Wack sometimes sets up little deals and gets a cut, and he has access to folks, so 40 Glocc says this is why he calls himself a manager. Not to say that 40 is one to listen to, heck neither are, but if what 40 says is true, this certainly doesn’t help the fact that people already think that Wack 100 is an attention wh-re.

Wack got wind of 40’s explanation and clapped back saying,

“@40glocczoo how you help me get with a n-gga that don’t f-ck with you? And n-gga I’m 5 tours 4 albums and 2 hit singles on @losangelesconfidential to total 6 years. The problem is you wanted me to manage your wack ass and I told you my name Wack meant a Body Man your music as Wack means garbage #Icantdoit. When I tried to line up the one on one fade with you and Game remember @bigu1 was on the phone and you turned it down I was the manager then! Question did, that ass whopping traumatize you that much to where 4-5 years later your still talking about the ass whopping you received? N-gga let it go it’s over you healed up the bushes grew back! Where’s your music something your only claim to fame today is a ass whooping you took!!! I mean damn.”

What are your thoughts? Is it time for both of them to just move on?!

Chris Brown and Lil Wayne Targets Of Drug Dealing Investigation

(AllHipHop News) Chris Brown and Lil Wayne have become targets of a federal drug investigation following their reported links to an alleged Miami drug dealer.

South Florida based music producer Harrison Garcia is currently standing trial for selling illegal narcotics.

During the third day of litigation on Thursday, U.S. Homeland Security Agent Kevin Selent revealed Brown and Wayne appear to be implicated as collaborators in drug deals in evidence unearthed in the case.

While Selent was testifying in court, he pointed to evidence of a text message defendant Garcia sent to one of his female associates, in which he bragged about a $15,000 bank credit that was wired to his account by Brown.

Attaching a screenshot photo of the official bank transaction from “Christopher Brown” to the message, Garcia allegedly texted the woman: “Look who put money my account (sic)”.

The lady replied, “What that for LOL (sic)”, and then, after attaching several smiley face emojis to his response, Garcia shot back a text to her stating: “Drugs… lean and s##t.”

Lean, the street name for a popular codeine cough syrup intoxicant mixed with soda, is a substance rapper Lil Wayne has openly admitted to using in the past, and according to agent Selent’s testimony, Garcia confessed to selling “a lot of narcotics” to the hip-hop superstar after he was arrested last October.

Prosecutors also submitted damning photographic evidence featuring Garcia posing with Brown and Lil Wayne.

The defendant was snapped with Brown on the “Loyal” singer’s private plane in one picture and, in another, he was pictured on an airport runway while accompanying the Grammy-winner to a concert in Albania.

Prosecutors contend the pictures reveal Garcia did more than just party with the two stars.

Agent Selent declined to give more details about the depth of the probe federal authorities have launched into the two superstars, but he confirmed Chris Brown and Lil Wayne are under investigators’ radar: “It’s still an open investigation. I can’t talk about it,” he stated.

T.I. & Tiny’s Best Friend Go At It On Instagram!

(AllHipHop Rumors) Social media sure does keep us entertained on a DAILY BASIS!

It’s NO SECRET that T.I. and his wife Tiny are not on the best terms. There is still a pending divorce hanging over their heads!

While fans of the Harris Family Hustle hope the couple makes up, things keep getting more and more entertaining on social media.

T.I. has expressed his dislike for Tiny’s friends over the years, so no one was really surprised that he got into it with one of them on Instagram yesterday.

Apparently Tiny’s longtime best friend, Shamra, wrote a general post about public figures protesting social injustices when they don’t even uphold their own black women and wives.

While many, Tip included, assumed the post was directed at T.I., Shamra maintained that the post had nothing to do with him, and if she had a problem with him, she says she could’ve called him up since she has his direct phone number.

Apparently T.I. jumped in her comments taking some shots at her including a shot about her husband allegedly leaving her. This is what social media has had to gather since a noticeably missing comment from the rapper has been deleted.

No matter what was said, Shamra definitely had a response for Mr. Troubleman.

“Oh my n-gga this ain’t no shade at no shade at you what so ever don’t really know what you speak of but understand this that man you speak of I let him go he didn’t leave me so go get ya facts straight and then come holla at me! Betta yet you have my number so if it’s any problem you know how to get at me! Trust and believe, I’ve never addressed your relationship because had we all know how that can go so please have a seat! Better yet hit my line! It’s open!” said Shamra.

Tip replied saying,

“Nah no thanx. I’ll pass. If I never have to see or speak to you again, my heart will smile.”

Shamra told T.I. that he obviously felt personally attacked by a message she posted. She also told him that he will definitely see her again, and that her heart will also smile.

Social media has come to two hilarious conclusions: 1. That a hit dog will holler. 2. She was low-key talking about him. LOL!

What are your thoughts?

Bobby Shmurda Sentenced To Four Years In Prison In Contraband Case

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Bobby Shmurda has reportedly been sentenced to four years behind bars in his prison contraband case.

The hip-hop star, real name Ackquille Pollard, was reprimanded in June, 2015 after he was caught in possession of a “sharpened metal instrument” while behind bars at New York’s notorious Rikers Island prison.

He allegedly received the object during a visit from his girlfriend, Kimberly Rousseau.

The 22-year-old pleaded not guilty after he was indicted on perjury, weapons possession and promoting prison contraband charges in July, 2015.

He faced up to seven years in prison if convicted, but in December, an assistant district attorney offered Shmurda a deal of one to four years under lockdown for the contraband charge and he accepted it.

In February, he pleaded guilty to one count of attempted promoting prison contraband and on Friday (April 7), he was reportedly sentenced to four years in prison.

The rapper will serve the time concurrent with his sentence for conspiracy and weapons possession, which he has already begun.

The news comes months after Pollard was sentenced to serve seven years behind bars for conspiracy to possess weapons and possession of a weapon in October.

That punishment stems from an arrest during a sting operation in Manhattan in 2014, when he was charged with counts of conspiracy to commit murder, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon and more.

Pollard’s other charges were dismissed as part of a plea deal and he was given credit for time served.
