(AllHipHop News) Law enforcement officers gathered outside Beyonce’s hometown concert in Houston, Texas on Saturday to protest the alleged anti-police message in her “Formation” video.
The superstar’s Formation World Tour touched down at the NRG Stadium over the weekend, but fans arriving at the venue were met by members of the Coalition Of Police And Sheriffs (COPS), who staged a demonstration nearby and shone a blue light in the direction of the arena.
The officers were among a group which had taken issue with Beyonce’s decision to spotlight the ongoing problem of police brutality in the U.S. in the emotionally-charged promo for “Formation.”
She further incensed authorities in the days after the song’s release in February, when she paid tribute to the Black Panthers movement – a revolutionary black nationalist and socialist organization in the U.S. – during her Super Bowl halftime show.
The imagery prompted members of police unions in various U.S. states to launch boycotts, threatening not to work as volunteer officers during the trek.
“Some of her performances we believe to be anti-police,” COPS demonstrator Tony Ragsdale told local TV station KHOU11.
However, not all local police forces agreed with the action.
Doug Griffith, Vice President of the Houston Police Officers Union, previously declared:
“From the initial release of the video, I think it’s been blown out of proportion. I think at the end of the day most people understand (Beyonce) has no problem with law enforcement.”
Beyonce herself underlined the point when she recently spoke out about the backlash, insisting she has nothing against the police.
“I’m an artist and I think the most powerful art is usually misunderstood,” she told Elle magazine last month. “But anyone who perceives my message as anti-police is completely mistaken.
“I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of the officers who sacrifice themselves to keep us safe. But let’s be clear, I am against police brutality and injustice. Those are two separate things. If celebrating my roots and culture during Black History Month made anyone uncomfortable, those feelings were there long before a video and long before me.
“I’m proud of what we created and I’m proud to be part of a conversation that is pushing things forward in a positive way.”
Beyonce has since used the controversy as inspiration for her tour merchandise, with the phrase “Boycott Beyonce” emblazoned on black T-shirts and black iPhone cases sold during her shows.

And even though the Kardashian’s are probably still adjusting to the shock of her and Rob’s relationship and the new baby, Blac Chyna isn’t missing the opportunity to make as much loot as possible off CHYMOJI’s.
Glamroks and Blac Chyna will unveil all the 700+ custom emojis during an exclusive red carpet soiree on Tuesday, May 10th.

(AllHipHop News) Drake appears to have dropped the mantra “Diss me, you’ll never hear a reply for it” that he presented on “Successful.” The Toronto rapper was asked about his Grammy nominated diss track “Back To Back” during an interview with Nardwuar, and the “6 God” stated the response to Meek Mill’s ghostwriter allegations will now be the norm for any rapper that takes aim at his honor.
“‘Back To Back’ was what it was. It was a reaction to somebody trying to challenge my integrity. You know that’s pretty much what’s gonna happen anytime that happens,” said Drake. “It is what it is. I had to do what I had to do.”
The discussion also included Drake and his producer Noah “40” Shebib talking about the infamous Jay Z vs Big L battle. While they agreed the contest’s win could have gone either way, Drake also showed love to Hov.
“Two great emcees,” added Drake. “[Jay’s] got a few W’s.”

(AllHipHop News) Drake received a lot of recognition for joining Eminem, 50 Cent, and Lil Wayne as rappers to push over 1 million units of an album in one week. However, some observers are questioning if the OVO front man’s VIEWS should really be listed as a milli seller.
One writer for Stereogum argues the inclusion of “Hotline Bling” on the tracklist is partly why VIEWS is credited with 1.04 million equivalent album units (the LP totaled 852,000 in actual sales).
According to Michael Nelson, the hit single’s streaming numbers over the last 10 months played a big part in the final first week numbers for Drake’s fourth studio album which has inflated the LP’s status.
Nelson wrote:
The only reason Views “has crossed the 1 million mark in U.S. sales and nearly 1.2 million globally” is because of the final song on the album; a late inclusion called “Hotline Bling.” As you might recall, back in February, the RIAA changed its certification methodology to account for “streaming and download consumption patterns.” Per the RIAA’s new rules, “1,500 on-demand audio and/or video song streams = 10 track sales = 1 album sale.”
Initially, “Hotline Bling” was a loosie for Drake, but because it’s now included on Views, all those old streams are counted toward the album’s sales total.
Forbes recently reported that “Hotline Bling” earned over 400 million Spotify streams worldwide and nearly 700 million plays on YouTube. The publication asserts the addition of the Top 5 single on VIEWS has impacted the album’s RIAA totals.
As the music industry moves from a purchase/download model to focusing more on streaming, the concept of album sales and platinum certifications has changed to reflect the current market. Both the RIAA and Billboard adjusted the method of calculating their respective album awards/charts because of the rise of streaming.
“For a while we’ve recognized that we would need to put streaming in the mix as consumption changed — but we needed to do it carefully. So we started with the easiest one to change, the singles awards,” said RIAA chairman/CEO Cary Shermann about the rule changes. “We watched that and made sure it worked out, and then after about a year, we started on the albums. While looking at how to implement for the album, we went through an elaborate process, getting feedback from the industry, and going through the same data analysis that we did for the single.”
Drake is not the only superstar to benefit from the shifting landscape. Rihanna’s Anti was certified platinum by the RIAA after the album was downloaded for free over 1 million times in January. When The Life Of Pablo took the top spot in April, Kanye West became the first act to land at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart off mostly streams.
The numbers for Drake’s most recent collection show the Toronto rhymer is still one of the most popular music artists in the world. Besides securing the highest sales week of Drizzy’s career, VIEWS has also been credited for breaking the streaming record with over 245 million streams in its first week of availability.
(AllHipHop News) President Barack Obama addressed the graduates at Howard University’s commencement ceremony on Saturday. During the presentation at the HBCU located in Washington, DC, the POTUS offered his thoughts on current racial inequality as well as the advancement of African-Americans in the country over the last 30 years.
The 45-minute speech included President Obama referring to the rise of Hip Hop culture. Obama also mentioned global music superstar Beyoncé and Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes as examples of the advancements African-Americans have made in the U.S. since he graduated from Columbia University in 1983.
“A lot of folks didn’t even think blacks had the tools to be a quarterback,” said the president. “When I was a graduate, the main black hero on TV was Mr. T. Rap and Hip Hop were counter-culture. Now Shonda Rhimes owns Thursday night and Beyoncé runs the world.”
While acknowledging there are still issues like income inequality, education reform, and mass incarceration that need to be solved, President Obama made the case that the country as a whole is better off than it was in the early 1980’s.
Obama stated, “Since the year I graduated, the poverty rate is down. Americans with college degrees, that rate is up. Crime rates are down. America’s cities have undergone a renaissance. There are more women in the workforce. They’re earning more money. We’ve cut teen pregnancy in half. We’ve slashed the African-American dropout rate by almost 60 percent, and all of you have a computer in your pocket that gives you the world at the touch of a button.”

(AllHipHop Rumors) Has Meek Mill once again taken aim at Drake? Last night two photos appeared on the Snapchat account MeekMillyMMG that seem to be direct shots at Drizzy’s new album VIEWS.
The first pic simply said, “Views.” That was followed by another snap that said, “Quit playin yo” with a smiley face emoji.
VIEWS opened with huge first week sales. Champagne Papi’s album sold over 850,000 copies in seven days, but the reviews and reactions for the project have been mixed.
(AllHipHop News) Jay Z might be having marital issues with Beyonce, but he might have more with this paternity suit.
Recently, a video has surfaced of Wanda Satterthwaite, stating that she is in support of her son Rymir Satterthwaite’s legal case with the Hip Hop mogul.
Wanda claims that she gave birth to Hov’s love child over 20 years ago, and nothing has been done to confirm that Jay-Z’s the actual father, until recently.
According to Radar Online the suit has been observed by the Supreme Court for fraud and collusion, which allegedly helped Hov finesse his way out of getting a DNA test.
Rymir made several attempts to get Jay Z to do a DNA test, however, the aspiring rapper filed a civil suit in 2014 after failing multiple times.
Check out Wanda Satterthwaite’s official statement below.

Well, the Indiana rapper and legendary Stones Throw producer are back together again and currently working on a new project.
Attending a recent interview with Red Bull Music Academy, Madlib announced that the project, titled Bandana, is coming soon with no release date as of yet.
The producer also noted in the interview that a lot of the beats from the upcoming joint project were originally for Kanye West’s project The Life Of Pablo, but were quickly snatched up by Gibbs after they didn’t make the cut.

(AllHipHop News) Lauryn Hill has made an official statement today following a failed performance in Atlanta over the weekend.
Hill’s sound was cutoff after she showed up two hours late for a show the Chastain Park Amphitheatre.
Lauryn Hill’s statement, which was created as an open letter to fans, was posted earlier this morning via Facebook.
According to her post, the singer writes that she is excessively late mainly because of her “artistic process.”
The former Fugees singer writes:
Because I care so deeply about the artistic process, I scrutinize, have perfectionist tendencies, and want space made for spontaneity, which is not an easy process, with the many moving parts on the road. Some days we are more successful than others re time. However, the vitality that is infused into the performances is always appreciated by the audiences, who may not know exactly what it took to accomplish.
However, some fans weren’t really believing Ms. Lauryn Hill’s excuse.
With these statements and others made from even her die hard fans, Lauryn Hill’s musical success in the past is now being overshadowed by her tardiness at shows.
(AllHipHop News) Kanye West surprised wife Kim Kardashian on Mother’s Day by hiring a string orchestra to perform in their home.
The rapper is known for his over-the-top gifts and he didn’t disappoint on Sunday (May 8), as mother-of-two Kim woke up to an all-female ensemble playing in their Bel Air, California mansion.
“Mother’s Day surprise in my living room!” the thrilled reality star shared on Snapchat.com as she documented the lavish gift.
The musicians all wore flowing white skirts as they performed songs picked out by the couple’s two-year-old daughter, North, who joined her mom to watch the private concert.
Tracks included “Let It Go” from the tot’s favorite movie, “Frozen,” and Annie musical hits “It’s a Hard Knock Life” and “Tomorrow.”
But that wasn’t all – Kanye also had a bench covered in an array of bright pink flowers delivered for his wife, who gave birth to son Saint in December.

(AllHipHop News) Drake has a reason to celebrate this week.
After finally releasing his highly anticipated fourth album Views last month, the release has earned more than 1,075,494 sales (which includes streams) in it’s opening week.
According to Hits Daily Double, the album made over 860k in traditional sales, while also making a little over 220k in streams. Drake went to Instagram to celebrate his recent achievement.

Views broke a number of records during its debut week. Not only was it Drake’s high sales ever, but it was the highest week of sales from a male artist since Justin Timberlake’s project The 20/20 Experience dropped in 2013.
The rapper’s album has also been certified platinum, a feat that only four other Hip-Hop albums were able to achieve in their opening weeks.
As the saying goes, “You don’t know where you’re going until you know where you’ve been.” Here is a look at notable events that took place in Hip-Hop this week from years past.
Pittsburgh rapper/activist Jasiri X will be awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters from the Chicago Theological Seminary on May 13th at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.
The artist who had dedicated his life to keeping the voice of the people alive world wide announced the achievement on his Face Book page saying,
“It’s still kinda hard to believe, but next Friday I’m receiving an honorary doctorate from the Chicago Theological Seminary and delivering the 2016 commencement address.”
Fans showed an overwhelming amount of support as have his friends and family.
In a statement, the newly appointed Dr. X said,
“It is an extremely humbling experience to be honored in a similar fashion as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who also received his honorary doctorate from the Chicago Theological Seminary. The CTS bestowing their highest honor, Doctor of Letters is a spiritual confirmation, of sorts, that in my efforts, I am doing something right.”
According to The Chicago Theological Seminary , the degree is bequeathed upon those who possess their seminary’s core value of “transformative leadership toward greater justice and mercy in church and society.
The 1Hood Initiative co-founder has come a long way from the streets of Pittsburgh where he began his journey. Jasiri has been around the world and back giving messages of hope to downtrodden citizens, standing in defiance of those who would seek to challenge the will of the people and holding strong to his convictions in defense of the rights of ever man, woman and child.
We look forward to seeing where this path leads him next!

(AllHipHop News) The hit single “Panda” was not only an extraordinary success for Brooklyn rapper Desiigner, who signed with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music in February.
“Panda,” which was recently confirmed double platinum, has also landed a publishing agreement for the song’s producer Menace.
“It’s amazing and shows people that you do anything if you’re in the right place at the right time, with fate on your side,” Menace said of the speedy success of the tune.
Menace, born Adnan Khan, is a 22-year old producer from Manchester England, who had been striving to crack into the music industry for over 10 years.
Menace linked with Desiigner after he posted the “Panda” beat (originally titled “Maniac”) to YouTube. Desiigner purchased the beat for $200 and the rest is history.
Prior to the success of “Panda” Menace labored as a mobile phone repair man. Those days are officially over since Menace inked a publishing deal with Tim Blacksmith’s Stellar Songs.
“Desiigner and I didn’t have the backing of a record label when we made the song. You, too, can make a hit on your own. I’m just excited now to be working harder than ever,” Menace said.
The brand-new contract puts Menace in good company since Stellar Songs works with top artists like Fetty Wap, Sam Smith, Charli XCX, Emili Sandé, Keizer, and Labyrinth.
Stellar Songs has already started the process of getting more of Menace’s productions placed with top name acts.
“Since I just signed a publishing deal, they’ll be setting up studio sessions with everyone and I can’t wait to get to start working on new projects,” Menace concluded.

President Barack Obama gave an epic speech at Howard University’s commencement address on Saturday (May 7).
“When I was graduating, the main black hero on TV was Mr. T. Rap and Hip-Hop were counterculture, underground. Now, Shonda Rhimes owns Thursday night, and Beyoncé runs the world. We’re no longer only entertainers, we’re producers, studio executives. No longer small business owners. We’re CEOs, we’re mayors, representatives, Presidents of the United States.”
