TBT Classic: When Gang Starr Got Over On Hip-Hop

The movie “Trespass” was largely forgettable even though it starred Ice-T and Ice Cube. One of the shining gems came from the soundtrack. Gang Starr’s “Gotta Get Over (Taking Loot)” still haunts even though it was released in 1992. Over a Average White Band Sample, the Premiere-produced track gives Guru (RIP!) plenty to work with. The Boston-bred emcee sounds far more menacing and intimidating over the slow, plodding track. Check it out…a true classic song.

CREED The Movie: A Knockout Not To Be Missed

Too often the problem with great movie franchises is that the films that follow can’t handle the task of staying true to what was special about the original while still being strong enough to stand alone. In order to hide these gaps, sequels routinely get crammed with a superfluous glut of famous names and expensive action sequences dripping with inconsequential cinematic fluff. Happily, CREED is not a part of this hackneyed tradition. Due largely to the clear-eyed and naturalistic steering of director Ryan Coogler, CREED more than rises to the occasion as a boxer’s clinic on staying true to a classic while also forging it’s own very unique and entertaining path.

Make no mistake, there are famous names in the film, starting notably with Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky and ending with the very palpable specter of actor Carl Weathers’ Apollo Creed. However, the sizable bulk of CREED’s star power comes from today’s world of professional boxing versus Hollywood, giving CREED an understated but singularly modern authenticity.   With former WBA and WBC Super Middleweight champion Andre Ward and Philly born and bred Puerto Rican Light Middleweight champion Gabriel Rosado putting in major screen time, even if you don’t know who they are going in, the fights in CREED crackle with an electricity that can’t be ignored.

While the fighting is top notch in CREED with a stylistic POV bent that gives EA Sport’s FIGHT NIGHT video games a run for their money, the film doesn’t get lost in the purely physical. What makes CREED transcend its subject matter is that it taps into the universal by changing focus from the enemy without to the more elusive enemy within that we all carry. Indeed, the fact that the film’s primary antagonist, “Pretty” Ricky Conlon, played with a lot of success by former British WBC Light Heavyweight champion Anthony Bellew, doesn’t have more screen time is an intriguing departure from most ROCKY films. But rather than obsess about this creative choice, filmmaker Coogler embraces it by doubling down and posing one question via every central character in CREED both old and new: “What makes a person fight when they are almost certain to lose?” The answers in CREED aren’t simple nor do they disappoint. It is almost guaranteed that every moviegoer based on their own life experiences will have their own takeaway on the validity of these answers as shown though CREED’s lens in this atypical but fresh addition to the ROCKY series.

Michael B. Jordan is both moving and believable physically and mentally in his portrayal of a young guy who can mix it up in the ring, but suffers greatly from the demons that put him there. Tessa Thompson has a fire and vulnerability as Adonis’ love interest, a woman who supports Adonis, but has a life of her own. Phylicia Rashad is the best that we have ever seen her as the concerned yet deeply conflicted parent who cannot bear to be too close or too far from the child that she has decided to love against all odds and convention. However, despite all of these wonderful performances, by far the best fusion of old and new is the beautifully wrought yet easily fractured relationship between Michael B. Jordan’s Creed and Sylvester Stallone’s shopworn Rocky Balboa. As the cinematic relationship between their fictional characters suggests, the scenes that Jordan and Stallone play together bring out the best of both in this very satisfying movie with knockout cinematic results.

CREED from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema opens nationwide today, November 25, 2015.

Black Americans Call Terrorism By A Different Name

I will never forget the day I was chased down the sidewalk of a Publix shopping center.

The source of my terror was a white man who had stopped driving his confederate flag adorned pickup truck and jumped out to vehemently shout “N######! Get out of here!” repeatedly while running after my mother and I.

My mind immediately went back to that Publix sidewalk this morning when I woke up and read about Black Lives Matter protestors being gunned down in Minneapolis by a group of white supremacists as they sat through 26-degree temperatures outside of the Department’s 4th Precinct to seek justice for the murder of Jamar Clark

    .

Screen Shot 2015-11-25 at 3.39.22 PM

The terrorism that I fear, and that we fear as black people in America, is not of the masked crusader from afar. Rather, it is the homegrown terrorists brandishing their confederate flags, armed in their white privilege, flanked in their version of Christianity, and protected by the guise of their law.

I was no more than 10-years-old on that Publix sidewalk. The attack occurred right down the street from the pristine, Christian, predominately white grade school that I attended. Not a single person in that school could or subsequently would understand why I became terrified after that day.

The thing is, they feared Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. They were afraid of Al-Qaeda and Hezbollah. Their terror lived in a far off land. The weapons they dreaded were suicide bombs, heavy artillery, and planes flying into buildings.

I did not know that fear. My terror lived in the nameless man at Publix. Each and every time we pulled into the parking lot, I found my breath becoming shallow and sharp. I scanned the parking lot for pick up trucks, confederate flags, and his face. When we left the store and got back into my mom’s blue Volvo station wagon without incident, I shuddered until I felt at ease. I begged my mother to stop taking me to that store. She said we couldn’t live in fear. But the thing she didn’t understand was that it was more than fear. It was terror at its core.

This terror was why I wept when my high school yearbook featured images of the confederate flag. It is why I could not agree when the yearbook advisor of my Christian school told me to not be so sensitive because it “represented heritage and not hate.” It is why I cheered when Bree Newsome boldly removed the symbol of my terror from the South Carolina State House.

KRS-One Takes Shots At LL Cool J!

Photo via KRS-One’s Instagram Video

UPDATE KRS-One just apologized in a rap at SOBS:

“I’m about to ask for forgiveness / I f##### up with my lyrical physical fitness / I want y’all to see this, heaven or hell / I did a rhyme, and I dissed LL / Now some of y’all might know this / I did it in Pittsburgh, the other day, with Chris / I was battlin’ this dude, / Tryin’ to get in my face, I ate him like food / But check it out / What I said with no doubt / I was off the top, like how I am now / He was dressin’ like LL, like ‘Wow’ / So as I was dissin’ him, it came out my mind / I really didn’t want to say it, but I said it / The YouTube caught it, now they playin’ it / Why am I shorted? / Because I feel bad / See, LL Cool J, he’s like my real dad.”

KRS-One and another rapper participated in a recent battle at a show in Pittsburgh. The first on the mic decided to not only dress like MC Shan, but he also recited some of his lyrics. KRS went in and said he thought the emcee was really going to touch the mic and battle, but instead he hit the mic reciting Shan’s lyrics. KRS-One said he already took Shan out already. The emcees seemed to partake in a friendly battle, but KRS-One ended his battle saying,

“My man walked off with a red Kangol hat, like he ain’t trying to be on LL’s dick, and LL’s wack.”

Shots fired! Why did KRS-One have to take it there with LL. Who do you think would win in a battle between LL Cool J & KRS-One? Remember when KRS and Nelly got into it. Who do you think really emerged as the winner of that beef?

Jay Electronica Fans May Not See An Album From Him Until Erykah Badu Says It’s Time

Well Jay Electronica fans, there may be a hold on any forthcoming JE albums. The mother of Jay Electronica’s daughter, the one and only Erykah Badu, doesn’t think he needs to make an album. She feels that he’s not one of the people that has to, and regardless, he’s an amazing emcee. Erykah said he brings out the best of people. Jay Z is probably not trying to hear it. Erykah feels his ‘Eternal Sunshine’ can hold people over until 2029 because she still hasn’t heard anything as good as it. Badu believes she still can’t match that mixtape. Eryah also said that Jay will make an album when she says he can make an album. Well! Does Erykah have it like that? She’s been “known” to turn a few rappers out, and she stated that her and Jay are still best friends. We might just have to wait until Erykah green lights any project.

Are T.I. & Tiny Expecting Another Child?

Photo via Tiny’s Instagram

Rumor has it that T.I. and Tiny are expecting a new baby! Tiny’s niece seems to have prematurely spilled the beans at Kandi Burruss’ baby shower on her Snap Chat. Now it looks like Tiny may actually be pregnant, meaning there was some truth to that Snap Chat. If Tiny is in fact pregnant this would be her fourth child and T.I.’s sixth (seven for the family). Rumor has it that Tiny is having a baby girl, which would be their first daughter together. If this is true, congrats Tiny and Tip!

Busta Rhymes Announces He Will Drop A New Album In 2016

Busta Rhymes is ready to leave his legal issues behind and get back to what matters: the music. During an interview with XXL, he said he is releasing a new album next year “without question.”

“I’m getting ready to launch the single within the next couple of weeks,” he said. “You’re going to be getting a few albums from Busta Rhymes. I ain’t put out an album in retail since 2009 when I dropped Back on My B.S. It’s been a long time and we’ve been cooking all these years. Don’t think for the slightest moment that these last few years I don’t have a phenomenal full course meal for the entire game. It’s definitely almost dinnertime.”

The Brooklyn native also has some big plans for his label, Conglomerate Ent.

“We got a new artist I’m getting ready to put out that recently been signed. I got a lot of projects on the film side; new albums and we’re going to be touring on the arena level.”

Is Aaron Carter The Second Coming Of Michael Jackson?

Photo via Michael Jackson’s website

In delusional news, child star Aaron Carter seems to believe Michael Jackson passed down the torch to him. Carter says him and MJ connected because they really were and still are the only ones of their kind. He claims Michael passed him the torch, and he didn’t ask him to do this. He also went on to say Michael didn’t have to do it. The backlash on Twitter was heavy. Twitter users wasted no time having a field day with Carter’s delusions of grandeur. What is Aaron smoking?!

Get To Know LaQuan McDonald Beyond His Murder By Chicago Police

LaQuan McDonald more than a news headline. He also was also more than a person that was shot 16 times by a Chicago police officer on Oct. 20, 2014. He’s more than a character in a dashcam video. More than a murder victim. More than a $5 million settlement. Stu Douglas knew LaQuan. On his Facebook account, Stu wrote an impassioned piece on the human being that has raised calls for police reform to maddening levels. Stu explains is relationship with LaQuan as well as who the young man was that has put another scope on police brutality.

So let me tell you about LaQuan.

The reason I want to tell you about him is because he deserves to be remembered for more than a police dash cam video. He had a phenomenal personality, he had an infectious smile and he had so much potential that was mercilessly stolen from him.

I worked directly with LaQuan from my first day at CASA and he was the first child I advocated for. Usually we assign volunteers and we just supervise the case, but for LaQuan, I was his volunteer.

LaQuan had a rough upbringing. He had been taken away from his mum at a young age after suffering from an abusive father and was never really counseled on what had happened to him. He was in and out of juvenile detention for petty crimes but overall his biggest issue was that lacked stability in his life.

There was a period of 4 months where I saw him every couple of days and we sat and played cards whilst we talked about school, talked about his future and most commonly, talked about his family. This lad loved his family so much it was inspiring. He could also make you laugh until you cried, he was so damn funny. Sometimes he didn’t even mean to be. There was one day I went to go see him and he didn’t even want to lift his head off the table when I got there. When I asked him what was up, he responded with “I just want to hide forever.” Worried, I probed him a bit more and found out that while he was in juvenile detention he wrote a letter to his mum and a letter to his girlfriend. The letter to his mum was from an adoring son who wanted the two of them to be reunited and to work on making them stronger. The letter to his girlfriend was from a 17yo boy who had been locked up for the last couple of months without any physical interaction – you could imagine what that could entail. Well, he sent the letters to the wrong intended person. After losing my s### laughing at the thought of their reaction I asked him how p##### off his mum was. He looked at me and said “nah, I’m not even worried about her, I’m worried about my girlfriend. Now she’s so doped up on love she’s never gonna leave me alone.” I still laugh about this with his mum who is still shocked “he even knows what some of those words mean”.

We worked with LaQuan to give him the best possible go at making something for himself. He managed to hold down a job over summer, he managed to pass his intensive probation for the first time and he was attending school every single day. Not only that, he was actually succeeding at school. It was during this time that I realised the true ability and resilience of LaQuan. Always bubbly, always smiling, always asking questions. He was inquisitive about where I was from and told me that he’d love to go out to Australia one day and go surfing. Considering his biggest fear was drowning, I thought this was a little odd, but I never wanted to subdue his dreams. The last I spoke to LaQuan was about a week before he passed away. He actually called me to ask about a job program we were running and how he wanted to apply for it. He even asked me how my weekend was, which still remains to this day one of my favourite moments with him. It just epitomized who he was. Hard working, caring and thoughtful.

And then on October 20, 2014, he was shot and killed by a CPD officer. The day after he was killed, I received a call first thing in the morning from his probation officer. She was in tears as she tried to inform me what had happened the night before. The information we were given at the time was that he lunged at a police officer with a knife and he was shot once in the chest and that killed him. Something was wrong though. LaQuan never antagonised. He never sought the fight and would only get in scraps when he was standing his ground for what he thought he was right. This was the first time I thought something wasn’t right, but I put that down to emotional biases that my friend was not the kind of person who would attack a police officer.

I attended LaQuans wake and his funeral with his probation officers, his lawyer, his caseworker, his teachers, his therapist and his judge. All of us were in tears. That shows you how many professionals would take time out of their day to pay their respects to a child robbed of his potential and how moved we all were by his death.

Then there came the moment where I knew for certain something wasn’t right. At his wake there was an open casket and while his probation officer and I were paying respects, I noticed a bullet hole in his hand. How could he have this injury if he was shot in the chest like the police report had said? It just wasn’t adding up.

Now I don’t know why he was carrying a knife, I don’t even know if he was carrying a knife at all anymore. All the information we were fed from the police has been thrown into doubt. All I know was that he had an emotional day and as a result was out late and far from home. How he got there? We still don’t know. We may never know.

Watching the video released by the CPD tonight made me sick. I’ve witnessed my friend being shot down and killed in cold blood. I’ve been trying to find a silver lining in the fact the cop has been charged with murder, but it’s been 400 days and it is evidently clear that the city believes his life was not worth the transparency a city like Chicago deserves.

But I don’t want his legacy to be about that video. I don’t want his legacy to be about his death. I want his legacy to be about the kind of young man that he was. Right now, on the streets of Chicago, people are protesting for change. And they are protesting peacefully. I was there protesting with them and there really was a positive vibe. I actually bumped into his cousin who I met at LaQuan’s funeral and we marched together for a while talking about what needs to change. People may argue that it was about race, and it may very well be. But to me, this is about a man, killing a boy, and the city trying to cover it up.

Now I don’t pray. But I’m hoping to whatever there is out there that the protests remain calm and they remain peaceful. Why? Because being antagonistic and picking a fight won’t get the agenda moving forward. Standing up for what is right will though.

But more importantly I can tell you first hand that it’s what his family wants and it’s what LaQuan would have done.
