Heavy D’s Police Thriller Moving Into Production

(AllHipHop News) A police thriller co-written by late rapper Heavy D is heading into pre-production.

The Hip-Hop icon, real name Dwight Errington Myers, died from a pulmonary embolism in 2011 at the age of 44, when he was due to star in Crossed, a thriller he had written with Avery O. Williams.

On Tuesday (May 24), what would have been his 49th birthday, the rapper’s longtime friend and producer Gordon Bijelonic announced he would be honoring Heavy D by finally making the movie.

“It’s a way to celebrate the legacy of a great man, and another way for Hev, years after his passing, to continue to take care of his daughter that he loved so much,” Gordon said in a statement, according to Variety.com.

He also reveals they were both “committed to making this movie” before Heavy’s death and it was originally developed as a “starring vehicle” for the musician, who had previously had acting parts in movies “Tower Heist,” “The Cider House Rules” and “Step Up,” plus TV shows “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Bones” and “Boston Public.”

“Crossed” follows a street cop who jeopardises his life and career as he tries to bring down a drug kingpin. Heavy D had “dropped weight, got buffed, and even starred in a play, all in preparation” for the part, according to Avery. He also said they had offers to make the movie but they waited so Heavy D could be the star.

The rapper’s daughter Xea Myers will executive produce.

She says, “I knew my dad wanted to be a writer and an actor. And I’m so happy this will happen for him now because he deserves it.”

Craig Mack Returns As Bad Boy Reunites

(AllHipHop News) Former Bad Boy rapper Craig Mack has resurfaced as his former compatriots are embarking on a nation-wide tour.

For those that don’t know Craig Mack was one of the original artists on Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs’ seminal label, rapping side-by-side with The Notorious B.I.G. at times.

The former rapper still seems to have bars – just tinged with religious revery.

“The Earth and God are one accord/And I’ll be in the choir singin’ ‘Praise The Lord,’” Mack “raps” to his congregation at Overcomer Ministry in South Carolina.

Here is the original video from 2012 that initially depicted Craig in his newfound religious home.

Chance The Rapper Discusses Not Selling His Music & His Issues With Record Labels

(AllHipHop News) Chance The Rapper is making huge waves in the music industry, and he’s doing it without the backing of a major record label. The SAVEMONEY member’s Coloring Book mixtape became the first project to chart on the Billboard 200 off only streaming totals.

Coloring Book is just the latest album-quality body of work that Chance has released for free. His previous tapes, 10 Day and Acid Rap, as well as the Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment album Surf were available for download without payment.

Chance spoke with Beats 1’s Zane Lowe about his new collection, and the conversation included the Chicago representative explaining his decisions on staying indie and giving out free music.

On not selling his music:

I think the free part of it is more of an attention grabbing thing and something that people can use as a marker to track what I’m doing. Since I was 15 or 16 passing out mixtapes outside of my high school, I always gave them away for free. I’d get in trouble with my pops, because we’d work to get this money and then I spend it on CDs, and literally give it away. I would always explain that I want to get it to as many people as possible.

On record labels:

I don’t agree with the way labels are set up. I don’t agree that anybody should sign 360 deals or sign away their publishing or take most of the infrastructure that’s included in a formal deal. But I’ve learned to not be like, “f-ck this company, f-ck this company.” Even though a lot of those people tried to make it really hard for me to release my projects.

Slick Rick Makes Return At Insane Clown Posse’s Gathering of The Juggalos

(AllHipHop News) It has been just over a month since legendary rapper Slick Rick received his American citizenship, and the rapper is wasting no time getting back to work.

Slick Rick will make his first major appearance since receiving his citizenship at the Insane Clown Posse’s 17th Annual Gathering of the Juggalos.

Tens of thousands of festival goers will see performances from ICP and artists on their Psychopathic Records label.

In addition to Slick Rick, Tech N9ne, Twiztid, Suicide Silence, Emmure, Asking Alexandria, Gwar and more are supposed to take to the stage during the three day festival.

The Gathering of the Juggalos is a controversial concert festival that takes place each summer and draws large numbers of patrons.

The festival was originally held in Michigan, Illinois, banned in the state and forced to move to several different states over the years, including Illinois, Ohio and Missouri.

Gathering 17 takes place from July 20-23 at Legend Valley outdoor concert/campground in Thornville, Ohio, which was the site of last year’s fest as well.

It’s known for drawing a tough crowd as well, both offstage and on. In 2010, Tila Tequila was injured when people pelted her with stones and feces.

ICP was also forced to apologize to rapid Method Man, after their fans went berserk and threw objects at him during his performance as well.

Put the risk aside and the performance could be a great launching pad to reintroduce Slick Rick. I CP has always made it a point to include the best hip-hop ask for the festival.

Over the years, no less then Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Ice-T, Busta Rhymes, Juvenile, Ice Cube, Big Hutch and even Vanilla Ice have had success at the wild festival.

Slick Rick had been hampered by a 23-year legal battle to gain citizenship in the United States. The rapper won his battle on April 15, when he was finally awarded dual citizenship in the U.S. and the U.K., where he was born.

During a town hall-style meeting in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, the president asked a local rapper to display her talents. Suboi then began dropping bars in her native language.

“That was pretty good,” said Obama.

The POTUS went on to add, “Artistic expression is important… One of the most important things about art is it teaches you to not just think about yourself, but it puts you in the head of other people. You start realizing somebody else’s pain or somebody else’s hopes. And you start realizing we have more in common.”

In addition, Obama praised rap music for starting off as a form of expression for poor African-Americans to becoming a global phenomenon and the favored art form of many of the world’s youth.

Lil Wayne Reportedly Ended Talks With Birdman Over $51 Million Lawsuit

According to TMZ, the outburst at Weezy’s concert was the result of legal negotiation over Wayne’s $51 million lawsuit against Birdman’s Cash Money Records collapsing.

The “No Worries” rapper was expecting his long-delayed Tha Carter V album to finally hit stores, but apparently Birdman reneged on that concession.

Wayne sued Cash Money after turning in C5 and the label still refused to release it.

The New Orleans native is also demanding compensation for the album’s advance money as well as unpaid revenues from his previous projects.

Bill Cosby Sexual Assault Case Will Go To Trial – A Lesson From O.J. Simpson?

(AllHipHop News) – After much legal wrangling by the defense and an exhaustive degree of debate within popular and social media, Bill Cosby, comedian and star of the groundbreaking “Cosby Show” will be going to trial defend himself against criminal charges of sexual misconduct.

Presiding Norristown, Pennsylvania Judge Elizabeth A. McHugh at the Montgomery County Courthouse issued the ruling from actions that Cosby is alleged to have taken against defendant and former Temple University employee Andrea Constand in 2004 in keeping with a civil suit that Constand filed against him in 2005.

Constand, who saw Cosby as a trusted mentor and friend before the alleged sexual misconduct, is accusing Cosby of drugging her with pills that rendered her incapable of movement and then sexually assaulting her at his home outside of Philadelphia in 2014.

Temple University is Cosby’s alma mater.

Cosby, who is 78 years old, currently faces three counts of felony indecent assault in connection with this criminal trial involving Constand.

If Cosby is convicted he could face up to 30 years in prison.

As reported by CNN,  Cosby’s defense attorney Brian McMonagle predictably found this ruling by Judge McHugh not in keeping with the actual strengths and merits of the prosecution’s evidence.

“The evidence presented today was evidence of nothing, ” stated McMonagle post ruling, stressing that the prosecution had had more than 12 years to present a ‘workable’ accuser in Constand as the linchpin for the criminal case, adding: “There was no evidence of a crime here.  And the inconsistencies that plagued this investigation from the start continue to plague it now. This case should end immediately.”

While allegations of sexual impropriety against Cosby date as far back as the mid 1960s, as currently recorded in places as widely accessible as Wikipedia, greater public knowledge of these accusations have only just come to light.

In October 2014, comedian Hannibal Buress was one of the first to reference the accusations in a highly controversial comedy routine that subsequently went viral.

That following year in July 2015, previously sealed transcripts from Cosby’s deposition in connection to a civil suit Constand filed in 2005 against Cosby were released, with Cosby admitting on public record to using Quaalades with multiple women in what he described as “casual” sexual encounters despite previous and continued knowledge that use of such a drug is illegal.

Today (May 24), as reported by many news sources, more that fifty women – some of whom are also celebrities – have come forward and accused Cosby of past sexual misconduct in the last three years alone.

With this legal defeat of Cosby’s five month campaign to avoid going to trial, a decade that has been shrouded in the rumors and the mysteries of ‘he said, she said,’ will finally see what should hopefully prove to be some much needed legal clarity.

In the pursuit of that clarity, a political lesson in celebrity jurisprudence, of the likes of what America hasn’t seen since the O.J. Simpson trial of 1995, could be on hand with regards to larger questions of race, sex, gender and class.

As per The New York Times, in the wake of Judge McHugh’s ruling, Cosby has waived a formal arraignment, signaling an automatic plea of not guilty and thus eliminating any barriers towards McHugh’s next step of setting a court date.

Hopefully when that day comes, we as a country will have learned a bit more than we exhibited in 1995 about staying together in the face of hard realities versus dividing along the political lines of the beliefs around which we find ourselves the most comfortable.
