Kean University Cancels Common's Appearance As Their Graduation Speaker

Common was scheduled to visit Kean University’s commencement ceremony as the guest speaker but due to a 15-year-old song that appearance has been cancelled.

According to reports, the song that has made the New Jersey college change their mind is Common’s 2000 track “A Song For Assata,” which is dedicated to Assata Shakur who was convicted of murdering a cop in 1977.  She escaped prison after her convicton and fled to Cuba, where she remains as a fugitive.

“The students expressed interest in Common because he composed the Oscar-winning song ‘Glory’ with our prior commencement speaker John Legend,” said Susan Kayne, a Kean University spokesperson. “While we respect his talent, Kean is pursuing other speaker options.”

State Police union president Chris Burgos said that having the Chicago rapper as a speaker is a “slap in the face” because Shakur, born Joanne Chesimard. is portrayed as the victim when she was in fact the killer.

“What is troubling here is that a state university that is subsidized with state taxpayer funds, is once again being questioned on their decision-making at the highest levels,” Burgos said in an emailed statement to NorthJersey.com

The school is currently looking for another speaker. Common has yet to issue a statement,

(AllHipHop News) For many music listeners the stand out moment on Kendrick Lamar’s new album, To Pimp A Butterfly, was the “interview” between the Black Hippy member and the late Hip Hop icon Tupac Shakur. Kendrick resurrected Pac at the end of the closing track “Mortal Man.”

It turns out, Pac was going to play an even bigger role on the project. Speaking with MTV, K. Dot explained how his sophomore studio album was close to being called To Pimp A Caterpillar – 2.P.A.C.

“That was the original point once I got the interview,” said Kendrick. “Me changing it to ‘butterfly’ – I just really wanted to show the brightness of life, and the word ‘pimp’ has so much aggression. That represents several things. For me, it represents using my celebrity for good. Another reason is not being pimped by the industry through my celebrity.”

The Game Under Investigation For Punching LAPD Officer

(AllHipHop News) The Game’s decision to punch a man during a pick-up basketball game could get the California based rapper in legal trouble. According to TMZ, the person at the receiving end of the blow was an off duty L.A. cop.

The site reports the LAPD is now investigating the incident, and Game could face battery charges. The rookie officer is also under investigation, because Game claims the man threatened to shoot him before the altercation began. It is not clear if Game was aware the victim was a police officer at the time.

Game has had to deal with issues involving law enforcement in the past. He was arrested in October 2005 for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest in Greensboro, North Carolina. The cops claimed game refused to remove his Halloween mask while in a local mall and cursed at the officers.

In August 2011, Game tweeted out the number of the L.A. Sheriff’s Department’s Compton station. Many of his followers dialed the number thinking they were calling the rapper about an internship opportunity. The station’s phone lines were flooded which reportedly delayed the emergency phone system and emergency service.

Afrika Bambaataa Talks Hip Hop History & White Artists' Early Contributions To The Culture

(AllHipHop News) Hip Hop pioneer and founder of the Universal Zulu Nation Afrika Bambaataa watched the creation and expansion of the culture from its very beginning. The living legend spoke with VladTV about the origins of Hip Hop and at what stage white artists began contributing to the scene.

“There was definitely a large Black, Puerto Rican, Dominican – all from the Caribbean, West Indies making Hip Hop happen at that time,” explained Bambaataa. “And there were certain whites that lived in the community that came to some of the events too, but they weren’t on the stage yet to becoming emcees at the time.”

According to the “Planet Rock” performer, white artists did not start performing at Hip Hop shows until the culture spread from The Bronx to Manhattan punk rock venues.

“The punk rockers are the first of the whites who started grabbing hold to Hip Hop,” said Bambaataa. “Big up to the punk rock movement that helped to bring about that cause.”

Bambaataa mentioned the Beastie Boys as one of the early punk rock acts to embrace Hip Hop. He also acknowledged that Hip Hop began in the black community but has now broadened to become a global culture which includes people of different races and sexual orientations.

Kendrick Lamar Responds To Backlash Over Mike Brown Comments + Addresses Whether Producer LoveDragon Is Really Dr. Dre (VIDEOS)

(AllHipHop News) Kendrick Lamar is set to headline the 2015 edition of the Hot 97 Summer Jam concert. The TDE rapper stopped by the New York City radio station for the announcement.

The interview also included K. Dot responding to the backlash over comments he made in a Billboard interview where he said, “What happened to [Michael Brown] should’ve never happened. Never. But when we don’t have respect for ourselves, how do we expect them to respect us?”

That statement was criticized by some African-Americans, including Azealia Banks, claiming Kendrick was being blind to systemic racism. Some even accused the To Pimp A Butterfly creator of being apologetic for racism.

In response to his critics on that matter, Lamar told Hot 97, “I forgive them. Obviously, they don’t understand where I come from. They don’t understand what I’ve been through. They don’t understand what I’ve done to my community that tore it down. For them to take my words out of context – yeah, I forgive them.”

Kendrick also recently spoke with Power 106 in Los Angeles. He was asked about the rumors that the secretive producer LoveDragon on the To Pimp A Butterfly tracks “How Much a Dollar Cost” and “You Ain’t Gotta Lie (Momma Said)” is really his mentor Dr. Dre.

“LoveDragon, it’s a talented producer… No, [it’s not Dr. Dre.],” stated Lamar. “They want to remain anonymous… They don’t care about the accolades. They just want to do the music.”

The Compton native did deny he was LoveDragon, but he would not confirm if the unseen producer is actually a well-known person.
