Boyz II Men Stop By The Tom Joyner Morning Show For In Studio Performance

The iconic R&B trio Boyz II Men recently stopped by the Tom Joyner Morning Show for a nice in studio performance as well as a “Beyond The Studio” interview with Nikki Woods. Boyz II Men’s new album, Collide, is now in stores. Their new album presents a progressive sound for the R&B legends and their 23-year career. The group comprised of Nathan Morris, Shawn Stockman, and Wayna Morris hold the distinction of being the best-selling R&B group of all time, with 64 million albums sold worldwide.

The R&B legends ran through some of their most classic hits like “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday” and “Water Runs Dry.” The group, known for their perfect acapella performances, tight harmonies, and vocal arrangement nailed the live in studio performance.

B2M expressed that they were glad the fans still adore them the way they do, but it’s not much money in the business anymore because its hard for artists to move units. They went on to discuss how being able to acquire performer residency in Vegas is a testament to their career and their success. They stated that there were other groups that started with them but you don’t hear too much from them. The iconic trio said their new album is about good vibes, and its self gratifying. They also discussed going from a quartet to a trio saying that Mike leaving the group was his own doing. Nathan explained that Mike will always be their brother as he contributed to what they are known for. However, he moved on to explain the fact that Mike didn’t show up for shows or recordings. “He took it for granted,” said Morris. Nathan stated that people don’t realize Mike left 12 years ago. Nathan also stated that Collide is amazing because they took it back to where it began for them in high school making music because they wanted to with no ulterior motives, “and that allows you to be as creative as you want to be,” said Morris. Wanya took the mic thanking everyone who has been a part of their careers (including Tom Joyner) over the years, stating that the group is in a good place as artists.

Childish Gambino drops verse on LION BABE Song "Jump Hi"

Gambino’s been on a feature spree lately, from Logic to Fredo Santana, but his verse on LION BABE’s new song “Jump Hi” is a great addition. LION BABE’s new single is alone incredible, made with upbeat production and a Nina Simone sample. The songstress Jillion Hervey adds an old school vibe to her soul’d out verses. Add that with Bino’s verse, and you have a pretty good combination. Let’s hope that there’s more to come from the duo.

Breeding Ground: Check out ADH's Unplugged

There is nothing better than listening to live music. It shows how an artist can show his true talent through vocals and live instruments, especially in Hip Hop. Brooklyn rapper ADH might be a newer face in the Hip Hop scene, but his Unplugged project is an example of how Hip Hop and live instrumentals should be played. The experience of Unplugged is diverse, but the album still give you a great combination of jazz and hip hop. Check out the snippets ADH Unplugged below. you can purchase the albu from iTunes

Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine's Create Four-Year College

If you’ve thought that whatever school you attend (or attended) was dope, you might want to second guess yourself. Last year, producers Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine donated 70 Million Dollars to the University of Southern California’s for a new four-year college dedicated to several factors including art, industry, entrepreneurship. The college, called the Jimmy Lovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts,Technology, and the Business of Innovation, includes a plethora of classes including audio production, graphic design to name a few, according to Pigeons and Planes.

So the college’s real note to students is to…

With only a hand-full of students enrolled in the new college and halfway through their first semester, HYPETRAK obtained one student’s take on his experience in the new school. Here are a few things that the student is doing his first semester.

“A typical day in my academic life this first semester consists of analyzing the practices of innovative companies, learning my way around Adobe After Effects, building a 3D geometric cardboard model using Adobe Illustrator and a laser cutter, and working on a PowerPoint slide deck for a potential product.”

Can you still believe that this Dre was a member of NWA? Time’s changed. Check out the full letter here.

R. City Ft. 2 Chainz "I'm That"

In between writing hit records for Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Usher, Fergie, Ariana Grande and many others, Grammy-winning songwriters Theron and Timothy Thomas better known as R. City aka Rock City have been quietly working on their own project. The duo released their long anticipated first single “I’m That. . .” featuring 2 Chainz to iTunes recently.

The single is an unapologetic narrative detailing their Virgin Island heritage and offering an in-depth look into the personalities behind some of today’s biggest hits. “I’m That” is a mash up of a pulsing bassline, street wise soliloquy and undercurrents of Caribbean energy; an island interpretation of hip hop aka R. City.

“I’m That. . .” is the brainchild of R. City’s partnership with Dr. Luke for his Kemosabe/RCA venture. “Partnering with Dr. Luke has been a dream come true for us,” says Theron, “he is the first producer that really gets who we are as artists and has allowed us to be who we are in that space.” “It was important for us to release “I’m That” first,” Timothy says, “we’ve released mixtapes over the years and have had tremendous support. This record gives us the opportunity to give our fan base what they’ve come to expect on an underground level in a mainstream format. It also introduces new fans to who we are.”

The conference has hand picked 8 of the most prominent and influential music industry insiders searching for independent artists, producers, and songwriters. lstn3

Major movers and shakers who have worked with the likes of Rick Ross, Rihanna, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, Asap Rocky, Big Sean, Young Jeezy and a host of other stars in the game! Major record labels from the likes of Atlantic Records, Epic Records, Sony Records, Maybach Music Group, Young Money/Cash Money, Universal Music Group, and Roc Nation will be represented to scout local and independent artists, songwriters and producers.

We caught up with Dot and Juice for a Q&A about the conference. Check out the Q&A below.

1. What motivated you to start the conference here?

We wanted to bring the industry to our home town and shed some light on the talent here that often goes unnoticed.

2. Why did you involve a Chicago artist and not a local Detroit artist?

We’re fans of the Chicago music movement for sure. Although, We chose to work with Lil Durk because of his musical talent and heavy social media influence/ popularity

3. What do you want to see happen/getting out of doing a music conference?

Ideally, we would want Lstn4 to become a premier platform for artists who are blessed with musical talents but aren’t afforded the opportunity to be heard.

4. How do you feel about today’s music in today’s society?

Juice: I believe that alot of artist lack integrity and are not held accountable for the product they produce. Music has become heavily influenced by gimmicks. By searching for hungry artist that are true to their craft we hope to shift the direction in which music is headed.

Dot: Honestly, I embrace the new indie, all in house movement in music today. Although, I think originality is lacking and at times I feel that current music is too often gimmick driven. For instance, I rocks with Dej Loaf and her sound. I hate that I’ve heard way too many artists trying to replicate it. Signed and Unsigned.

5. What separates you from your competition/other music conferences?

It’s pretty evident. We present legit opportunities and incentives. Features from dope artists, track giveaways from heavy hitter producers, and the opportunity to be heard by industry insiders from top notch labels. Every talent who submits music is guaranteed a genuine listen.

6. How do you feel about music labels?

Major Labels are being forced to evolve. They still can be the industry workhorse behind an artist but with the emergence of social media, digital distribution and independent touring, artists have taken back a good chunk of control within the industry and this creates a huge opportunity for artists to usher in a regime.

7. How do you feel about the importance of social media?

Social media has become an essential tool for artists, fans, and labels to directly interact with one another.

8. What impact will your event have on the city and what impact are you trying to make on the city?
We are hoping that Lstn4 will continue to build unity amongst Detroit artists and show the world we are a factor in today’s music scene.

9. What is your connection to music?

Dot: I’ve always had a passion for production and songwriting. I had the opportunity to work with a wide range of artists. Signed and unsigned. Domestic and international. As I grew within the industry I noticed my true calling was behind the scenes on the business side of things.

Juice: I have had a love for music all my life. Growing up i began writing a lot and as I grew older I began doing my own mix cds. I was a deejay for about 5 years and built a respectable name for myself in the city. Now I enjoy looking for new talent to listen to and now with lstn4 I can give the next great artist the opportunity to be heard.

Video: Bizarre [D12] – "Never Turn Down"

In order to promote his upcoming EP, Dab Life, Bizarre has released a video for the record, “Never Turn Down.”  It’s a clip that’s as unpredictable as the man himself.  And while Biz is often regarded as an artist that pushes lyrical boundaries, this song, instead, has Biz pushing things in a different direction musically.  “Never Turn Down” is just as much EDM as it is Hip-Hop.  And if one were to think that the self-proclaimed “weirdo” is being too weird, Waka Flocka Flame and an entire fraternity party in South Carolina would beg to differ.  Check all that out and more in the video below!
