Drake – “How About Now” (Jodeci Sample)

Drizzy loves to drop new music randomly and he loves his 90s R&B and Hip Hop, so of course it’s no surprise that he dropped his new single “How About Now”. It samples Jodeci‘s classic “My Heart Belongs To You.”

According to The Fader it was originally posted by a teenage Soundcloud user in Marietta, Gerogia who claims it is a leak from Drizzy’s forthcoming album Views From The Six. It sounds like an outtake from last year’s Nothing Was The Same instead of a new direction for Drake. To no surprise it takes a girl to task for not appreciating him enough before he was famous. LOL

Kill The Messenger: The CIA, Crack & Black America

“You claim I’m sellin’ crack/But you be doin’ that”

                                       – KRS-One on “Sound of Da Police”

The day was a good day…That hot summer afternoon in Compton back in ‘84. As, Egyptian Lover, blasted from somebody’s boombox  the yunguns held a breakdancin’  competition on the sidewalk, while the old folks played dominoes in the shade. But then it happened… A mysterious white cloud descended upon South Central LA. All of a sudden the breakdancers started shootin’ at each other and the the old folks knocked over the domino table and started  stumbling around the ghetto like mindless zombies….
Of course, the drug epidemic didn’t quite happen that fast. It was part of a long program that had gone on for decades to destroy Black people, mentally, spiritually and physically.  But it just seemed that way…   Last weekend, a new movie was released called, “Kill the Messenger”, which tells the story of the late San Jose Mercury News reporter, Gary Webb. In 1996, Webb   released a series of articles called ,  Dark Alliance,  which alleged that the CIA played a role in the crack cocaine epidemic that took over South Central LA during the 80’s.   Like many of my generation, I remember the initial outcry over the allegation that the Feds were responsible for turning good-natured Uncle Jimmy into a crack head. There  were numerous talk shows and town forums with black folks expressing outrage but, what happened next is just a blur…   This blur, has resulted in a generation of kids who don’t know how to get out of the drug/gang life because they have no clue how they got in it to start with.   Now, let’s be clear. Talk about the conspiracy to wipe black folks off the planet did not begin with Gary Webb’s article. Nor did it end with the release of his book. There has always been talk of a grand conspiracy to kill off the “undesirables. ” Ever since the good white Christian church folks  of this country had the revelation that it wasn’t exactly proper to string God’s people up by ropes, new, but equally destructive ways had to be implemented.   Although, Webb may have been the loudest voice who raised the issue of the  drug induced genocide of the ‘hood, he definitely was not the first.   During the early 70’s Samuel Yette wrote, The Choice, which revealed various government programs to stop the rise of African Americans. Also, two years before “Dark Alliance” was published , Dr. Patricia Turner wrote the outstanding book , “Heard It Through the Grapevine”, which gave case studies surrounding the various “conspiracy theories” that had circulated around the Black community, including the introduction of crack. Not to mention lecturers, like Steve Cokely, who traveled, tirelessly,  around the country trying to warn a skeptical black community that the sky wasn’t fallin’ , but somebody was bombin’ the ‘hood with crack rocks.   So, what made Gary Webb’s revelation so earth shaking?  Who knows?  Maybe a slow news cycle. Maybe the way the planets were aligned. Or maybe, as usual, nobody believes anything until a white man says it.  For a brief moment in time, the plight of the boyz in the ‘hood had finally made front page news in a way that did not make absentee  fathers or the lack of education totally responsible their collective condition.  But those who live by media coverage, die by media coverage, as the suffering of Black kids in the ghetto could not compete with John Q. Public’s fascination with the sexual exploits of a sitting US president.  Unfortunately, the “Dark Alliance” story that could have saved thousands of Black lives was knocked off the front page by the explicit Too Short-like , freaky tales of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky.
Not that the issue of how drugs got in the hood hasn’t been raised since the 90’s. Every time a superstar rapper gets called out over his lyrics that champion drug dealin’ , he is quick to sing the old familiar ditty about how “ we don’t own the planes or ships that bring drugs into this country.”  ala “Nino Brown” from the infamous court scene in New Jack City. But instead of a noble quest to get to the root of the problem, the statement just plays out as a way to justify genocide.
So, in the aftermath of “Dark Alliance”, Freeway Ricky  Ross, the man credited for , allegedly , pushin’ drugs for Uncle Sam has become a folk hero to a generation of Hip Hop fans. But instead of having to continuously explain  his bad decision to thousands of grieving mothers, his  biggest concern seems to be  over some rapper swagga jackin’ his style. So instead of debating the validity of Webb’s accusations, and more importantly, questioning whether there are other Freeway Ricky Ross’s pushin’ Molly in the ‘hood in 2014 in order to fund a “war on terror,” we are stuck with conversations that just make for good TMZ material. Maybe, the movie “Kill the Messenger” will open up a dialogue in the African American community, where we can use it as a platform to re-examine the question of biological and chemical warfare waged on us. Maybe we will finally ask the right questions to get the right answers so we can tell our children to “Say no to drugs” and not come off sounding like clueless, hypocrites. My generation has some unfinished business to take care of.  Yes, the “conscious Hip Hop  era of yester- year raised questions but  it did not create the organizational structure to demand the answers. So, 18 years after “Dark Alliance,” as Fred Hampton once said , we are left “with answers that don’t answer, explanations that don’t explain and conclusions that don’t conclude…” Maybe, one day we will be able to place the blame for the destruction of our families  where it rightly belongs instead of , like Pac said, “blamin’ mama for turnin’ my brother into a crack baby…” Min. Tyga: I Don’t Like Drake As A Person

Tyga has been on the radar for controversy lately. First, he unleashed some tweets that signaled that there was some friction between him and his Young Money/Cash Money family. Now, he is alleged to be dating an underage Kylie Jenner, which he denies. In the midst of all the tension, the LA native has graced a digital cover of VIBE and has given his truth about it all.

When asked if YMCMB would be apart of his creative process for his new album, he said he was trying to distance himself from them and go independent. While discussing why, he dropped a bomb.

“I don’t really get along with Drake. I don’t really get along with Nicki,” he told VIBE. “I don’t like Drake as a person. He’s just fake to me. I like his music; you know what I’m saying? I think his music is good, but we’re all different people. We were forced together and it was kinda’ like we were forcing relationships together. It is what it is.”

The “Rack City” rapper also touched on not only whether he is dating 17-year-old Kylie Jenner, which he firmly denied, but his relationship with the whole Kardashian clan.

“Kylie? Nah. See the thing about Kylie… I’ve known Kylie and the whole family for four years. I introduced Chyna to Kim about a year ago. So everybody’s been cool, but like it’s just so hard, their world is different. If somebody wanna hang out, cool, I’m not opposed to hanging out with somebody. I hang out with her [Kylie], her sister [Kendall], I hang out with Scott [Disick] sometimes, I hang out with Khloe sometimes. But people wanna take the situation [with Kylie] to the next level.”

T-Raww also talked about how he feels about VH1 and working with Kanye. Read the full cover story here.

Leaked Mike Brown Autopsy Report Raises More Questions Than Answers

Though the Grand Jury is still deliberating on whether or not charges will be filed in relation to the slaying of Mike Brown, after leaking the autopsy report the St. Louis Post has sparked new fears that no charges will be brought against Officer Darren Wilson, as protesters have already started preparing for the worst.

Using documents prepared by the St. Louis County medical examiner, the Post is reporting that Brown may have been reaching for the officer’s gun at the onset of the shooting, though this speculation comes from two experts not actually directly related to the case. Additional information which alleges that Brown was “belligerent” comes from Detective Hokamp of the St. Louis Police Department, though critics have already noted that the actual police report is largely blank, leaving questions unanswered as to what exactly transpired.

According to the autopsy report, “The deceased body sustained multiple gunshot wounds: three wounds to the head, one wound was to the top of the head, right eye and right central forehead area.” The report summarizes that the official cause of death were the gunshots sustained to the head and the chest.

Assistant medial examiner Gershom Norfleet who actually  performed the autopsy, has advised that he was called to the scene roughly 90 minutes after Brown was killed with the official time of death documented as 12:15pm on August 9th. Norfleet has declined to give any additional comments.

The Grand Jury has until January 2015 to decide whether official charges will be filed or not.

(AllHipHop News) Actor Ryan Phillippe recently presented his directorial debut with the movie Catch Hell. While speaking with the L.A. The star of Cruel Intentions and Crash pointed out one picture that also featured a well-known rapper-turned-actor as a least favorite of his.

“I did this terrible movie with 50 Cent,” said Phillippe. “It was just a situation I didn’t want to be in. I was sold a bill of goods and it turned out to be something different, which is often the case in this business.”

The film was called Setup and also featured Bruce Willis and Randy Couture. The movie was released straight to video in 2011 via 50’s Cheetah Vision production company.

Phillippe revealed the experience of working on Setup partially inspired Catch Hell which is about a past-his-prime actor forced to do a poorly financed indie movie. Unlike real life, the events in Catch Hell take a much more terrible turn for the worse.

“I’ve made 30-plus films over 20 years,” said Phillippe. “And in my opinion, five of them are good. So you slave away and you work hard and you want to make something great, and a lot of times you end up disappointed.”

Billionaire Alki David Wants To Take Battle Rap Mainstream Starting With “Ether” Event

(AllHipHop News) One of the most memorable parts of Hip Hop culture from 2014 will most likely be the fact that battle rap exploded beyond YouTube. From the Eminem sponsored “Total Slaughter” TV show and event to the BET Hip Hop Awards featuring battlers performing on the main stage during the show, the lyrical competition is slowly creeping its way into the mainstream.

Billionaire Alkiviades “Alki” David of the Greek Leventis family is looking to push battle rap even further into pop culture. The self-confessed fan of Hip Hop and former break dancer sees battle rap as a valuable art form. David’s first move into the industry will be the upcoming “Ether” showcase for his FilmOn.TV internet television site.

“This is definitely the beginning of a UFC-style league for battle rap,” David told the Phoenix New Times. “It’s an intellectual sport and real social commentary.”

The main event for “Ether” is the much talked about match-up between Cassidy and Dizaster. The event will also present a “hologram experience” that will include special guests. David has prior history involving virtual performances. He played a role in the creation of the Tupac Shakur hologram at the Coachella Festival in 2012.

“The format has to be something the mainstream can understand,” said David. “I think what’s going to happen is the poetry of the spoken word will be elevated more and more, because eventually saying ‘f****t’ and ‘n***a’ are going to have to be replaced by something more competitive… There’s only so far you can go.”

“Ether” is scheduled to stream live on December 6th.
