The Countdown to End a Countdown: The Top 10 Moments from BET’s “106 and Park”

Today marks the end of an era.  It’s the last televised episode of BET’s iconic music video countdown show, 106 and Park.  From here on out, 106 will appear online only.  “The livest audience on television” is now a thing of the past, but the excitement which earned that title came just as much from what happened between videos than the videos themselves.

In honor of 106 and Park coming to an end, AllHipHop.com has gone back to the beginning and put together a list of the ten best moments in the history of the show.

10). Michelle Williams Falls: In 2004, Destiny’s Child appeared on 106 to perform their smash-hit “Soldier.”  The most notable part of the performance though was right when the trio went on stage and Michelle Williams took a fall.

09). Bow Wow Kisses Tyra Banks: During his teen years, Bow Wow ruled 106 and Park.  Therefore, it’s not surprising that he was crowned “Mr. 106 and Park” due to racking up the most #1 videos on the show.  In 2013, things came full circle and Bow Wow became the host of the show which helped make him a star.  And while his videos don’t rule the countdown like they did at one time, he did leave a lasting impression as host too when he locked lips with the stunning Tyra Banks.

08). Keisha Chante Upsets August Alsina: Despite being advised not to prior to the interview, Keshia Chante still proceeded to ask R&B singer August Alsina about his issues with Trey Songz.  He then became so mad at her about it that he later apologized.

07). Kanye West and 50 Cent: It was on 106 and Park that Mr. West and Mr. Jackson announced that 11_kanyeand50cent2_lg-300x200their albums would be going head-to-head on September 11, 2007.  When the first week sales came in, Kanye was victorious and Graduation outsold Curtis by a little over 250,000 units.

06). First Lady Michelle Obama Visits 106 and Park:

When Michelle Obama appeared on the show, she was shown the utmost respect (and rightfully so).  Her time on the air was a great balance of fun questions with positive messages.

05). Lil Wayne Kisses Birdman: With all the current tension in the Cash Money Camp, memories of happier times within the crew seem to be fading further and further away.  The picture of Birdman and Weezy kissing years ago got a lot of attention, but some people forget that Wayne kissed him on TV too.  It was obvious no one expected to see what they saw.

04). The Announcement of Michael Jackson’s Death: When a show is live, anything is possible and there are few examples that rival the intensity of 106’s hosts at the time, Rocsi and Terrence J, finding out about Michael Jackson’s death while at work and on the air in June 2009.

03). Rocsi Walks Off: A very memorable moment in 106 and Park history is when Terrence was taking shots at Rocsi, and she ended up walking out because of it.  Terrence then used an audience member to be his co-host in order close out the show.

02). Jin Dominates “Freestyle Friday”: One of the things that made 106th and Park so memorable were the weekly “Freestyle Friday” competitions.  It not only put a spotlight on aspiring emcees, but it also provided a national platform for battle rapping.  And of all the talent that was showcased, no one left a more lasting impression than Jin.  He was such a standout that his undefeated streak even earned him a deal with Ruff Ryders Entertainment.

01). Aaliyah’s Last Interview: The poorly received recent television biopic about Aaliyah made many of her fans cherish this even more – her final televised interview which took place only days prior to her fatal plane crash.

What’s your favorite moment in the history of 106 and Park?  Please share your thoughts in the comments section!

Azealia Banks Blasts Iggy Azalea & T.I.; Says The Media Is Trying To Erase Black Culture

(AllHipHop News) Azealia Banks has caught heat for her tendency to attack other celebrities on social media. The Harlem singer/rapper stopped by Hot 97 to talk about her willingness to speak her mind.

During the interview the Broke With Expensive Taste album creator explained her issues with Iggy Azalea, T.I., & the media, talks about getting released from Universal, and breaks down while discussing the appropriation of Black culture by white artists.

[ALSO READ: Azealia Banks Throws More Shots At Eminem For Not Beefing With Men]

On parting ways with Universal:

The album cost $2 million to make. Just because I was still finding myself creatively, and we were still paying for a lot of things I wasn’t using. I guess it got to a point were they had spent so much money on the record, they felt like, “We don’t feel like we have anything that will cross into the Top 40.”

The deal that I had wasn’t a 360, so I was keeping all my money off touring. So I was just like “eff’ this. I wanna do cool music, I wanna perform, and I wanna enjoy myself. I don’t wanna do anything that I think is wack.

On Iggy Azalea:

I feel like in this country when it comes to our things like Black issues, Black politics, or Black music there’s always this undercurrent of a “f**k you.” There’s always a “f**k y’all n***as. Ya’ll don’t really own s**t.” That Macklemore album wasn’t better than the Drake record. That Iggy Azalea s**t is not better than any f**king Black girl rapping today.

The Grammys are supposed to be accolades for artistic excellence. Iggy Azalea is not excellent… I have a problem when you’re trying to say that it’s Hip Hop, and you’re trying to put it up against Black culture…

When they give these Grammys out all it says to White kids is “You’re great. You’re amazing. You can do whatever you put your mind to.” And it says to Black kids, “You don’t have s**t. You don’t own s**t. Not even the s**t you created for yourself.” And it makes me upset.

On T.I.:

Here you have coon-head ass T.I. T.I. you’re out here trying to promote this White b***h. Why do you got your wife on VH1 and that b***h can’t f**king read. You got your priorities f**ked up. That’s really how I f**king feel about you. You’re a f**king shoe shining coon. How dare you?…

The fact that you’re focused on what the f**k I have to say about this b#### saying that she’s a runaway slave master – that’s really what you’re attacking me for. You have no other reason to come at me, besides from the fact I said something about her calling herself a runaway slave master…

I’m talking to another girl. Mind your f**king business. Shut the f**k up. Mind your business. I’m not talking to you.

On the media and the appropriation of Hip Hop and Black culture.

What bothers me is when you have the media [which] is really evil. I told you that undercurrent of like “f**k you” and the sensationalization that comes around it. There was this time in the summer where I picked up the New York Post, and the cover was “Hip Hop Is White.” They do that on purpose.

They’re trying to erase us. They’re trying to erase all of our books and scripture. Everything that we’re supposed to know about ourselves is gone. Completely f**king gone. Never to be seen again.

The fact that metallurgy was started in Africa – agriculture, all those things that created the world are ours. It’s really upsetting when you read your social studies textbook and all you see is stories of you under some White person’s foot or you failing… I don’t wanna share [Hip Hop] with y’all. I’m sorry I don’t…

This little thing called Hip Hop that I created for myself, that I’m holding on to with my dear f**king life – I feel like it’s being snatched away from me. It’s not, but they do that just to f**k with you. Why y’all trying to f**k with me?

Sha Money Issues Statement, Epic Records To Bail Bobby Shmurda Out

Bobby Shmurda’s label has his back, as Epic Records has decided to bail the rapper out of jail.

A lawyer for the rapper revealed that the legendary label would get him out of the jail as the 20-year-old faces a number of charges that include drugs, gun, attempted murder and murder.

Sha Money XL, the Epic executive that signed Shmurda, was present at the time of the arrest. He expressed his disenchantment with the whole ordeal and also cleared up some rumors.

“I was not arrested. They held me until they searched the studio then let me go. I signed these kids to give them a better way in life not to be dragged down by the media and gunned down by the 40 cops that raided the studio and pointed guns at me for working my job. You have no idea how this makes me feel or look when I’m one of the only few black men signing black artist from the streets and giving them a chance to do better in life.”

Dean Meminger, a reporter in the New York area, said there were multiple task forces working to bust Shmurda and company.

Denzel Washington Drawn Into Controversial Sony Leak

Denzel Washington is the latest name revealed in a series of Sony emails that have recently been leaked to the media. The series of leaks have been especially embarrassing to the studio, as it was revealed numerous artists and celebrities were slandered in the emails.

Now a new email sent from a producer to Sony chairman Michael Lynton indicates the studio felt a Black lead could hurt the chances of a film’s longtime success.

Conversations leaked from the latest hack:

“I am not saying The Equalizer should not have been made or that African American actors should not have been used (I personally think Denzel Washington is the best actor of his generation.”

“I believe that the international motion picture audience is racist – in general pictures with an African American lead don’t play well overseas.”

“But Sony sometimes seems to disregard that a picture must work well internationally to both maximise returns and reduce risk, especially pictures with decent size budgets.”

The flashback involved a fight between his crew and a few police officers. Crooked said:

We got into a brawl with some off duty cops who were saying and doing things just to get a reaction out of us. They did. I won’t say when or where it was, but when I see these bad cops killing these unarmed black men on the news, I crack a smile at the memory. I know there’s cops out there who do a good job and I’m an entrepreneur now so it might’ve went down differently today, but back then the unarmed black men got some revenge! [Laughs]

As one-quarter of the Hip Hop supergroup Slaughterhouse, Crooked regularly trades bars with Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, and Royce da 5’9″. He was asked what other rhymer would he like to see be officially added to the SH lineup. Kxng Crooked suggested his Shady Records boss as the fifth part.

He said:

Eminem would be a perfect fit since we’re all developing a crew chemistry when we create together. Could you imagine Eminem in Slaughterhouse? That would be CRAZY. And touring?? Game over.

These Are The 12 Best Reviewed Hip Hop Albums Of 2014

With 2014 coming to an end, it seems like a fitting time to reflect back on the year’s Hip Hop releases that left an enduring mark on the musical landscape. While award show nominations like the Grammys tend to recognize the rap albums that were more mainstream accessible (see Iggy Azalea’s The New Classic), professional music critics usually have a more accurate finger on the pulse of various works’ artistic value.

With that in mind, AllHipHop.com made a list of the best reviewed Hip Hop albums based on scores from Metacritic.com. The website calculates a ratings percentage by giving weighted averages for reviews from top print and online publications. A review score between 61-80 is labeled as “generally favorable” and a review score of 81-100 is labeled as “universal acclaim.”

Not a single rap LP crossed the one million sales mark in ‘14, but according to the Metacritic Scores (MS), there were at least 12 Hip Hop albums released this year that were viewed as instant creative achievements by nationwide critics. Check out the top reviewed Hip Hop albums of 2014 below.

Run The Jewels 2 – Killer Mike & El-P

la-et-run-the-jewels

Metacritic Score: 90

What The Critics Said:

The sequel takes the simplistic thrills of the debut and expands the duo’s natural chemistry. With Killer Mike grounded at the album’s emotional core, El-P is free to indulge in his intrepid production tendencies. – The A.V. Club

Cadillactica – Big K.R.I.T.

Cadillactica

Metacritic Score: 88

What The Critics Said:

Many worry that the Cadillactica theme might go over the heads of some and alienate fans but rest assured, at the core of it all, there’s still the 808 bang, jazzy, soulful music and the same Big K.R.I.T. that so many have come to know, respect and love–on second thought, he’s better. – RapReviews

What Goes Around – Statik Selektah

statik-whatgoes

Metacritic Score: 84

What The Critic Said:

All told, the LP stands as a convincing counterargument against those who claim hip-hop’s ’90s golden era can’t come back again. – Boston Globe

There Is Only Now – Souls Of Mischief

SoulsOfMischief_Cover

Metacritic Score: 84

What The Critics Said:

Fresh, crisp drums, creamy keys, luxuriant strings and timely flute and horn flourishes, each held together by a series of mood-defining bass lines, work to soundtrack this production, an inspiring foil that the record’s MCs make certain not to waste on this grand testament to Souls’ skill and staying power. – Exclaim

PRhyme – Royce da 5’9″ & DJ Premier

Metacritic Score: 84

RoyceDJPremier

What The Critics Said:

PRhyme can be closed off to the Rap of today, but their rendition of the Rap of yesteryear will always have a place in any era. – HipHopDX

Dead – Young Fathers

young-fathers-dead-cover

Metacritic Score: 83

What The Critics Said:

Young Fathers have quietly constructed a strange and intoxicating musical universe that feels entirely their own, while no one else was paying attention. – The Guardian

Cilvia Demo – Isaiah Rashad

isaiah-rashad-cilvia-demo

Metacritic Score: 82

What The Critics Said:

No song strays too far from the narrative or the occupied soundspace, and with each passing breath, Isaiah Rashad becomes a viable threat to leave an indelible mark similar to the one’s left by the southern rap Gods he follows so devoutly. – XXL

Piñata – Freddie Gibbs & Madlib

freddie-gibbs-madlib-pinata

Metacritic Score: 82

What The Critics Said:

Startling numbers like the block-rockin’ then dissolving “Real” crop up throughout the album and make this project even more than a sum of its parts, and with the track list flowing smoothly as attractive guests (Danny Brown, Raekwon, Scarface, Mac Miller, and the list goes diversely and gloriously on) come and go, Piñata winds up excellent overall. – All Music

Lese Majesty –  Shabazz Palaces

Lee Majesty-Shabazz Palaces

Metacritic Score: 81

What The Critics Said:

Like floating from level to placid level in Monument, listening to this record prompts your imagination and encourages discourse and reflection. Not the academic kind, but the kind of communal discovery people have been doing for ages. – Spin

Honest – Future

Honest - Future

Metacritic Score: 80

What The Critics Said:

Future’s lyrical sensitivity wouldn’t work without the album’s pitch-perfect production. The sonic palette on Honest leaves behind most of the synth-bathed extravagance of Pluto as Mike Will Made It, Metro Boomin, Nard & B and company push the boundaries of the trap template, from the sinister gurgle on “Move That Dope” to the acoustic guitar melody on “Special.” – FACT

My Krazy Life – YG

My Krazy Life - YG

Metacritic Score: 80

What The Critics Said:

YG has grown mightily as a rapper, and because DJ Mustard, who produced more than half of the album, has found a way to make his sketches theatrical without sacrificing their urgency. – The New York Times

Hell Can Wait [EP] – Vince Staples

vince-staples-hell-can-wait

Metacritic Score: 80

What The Critics Said:

Even a casual listener could hear the spark–Staples’ first fame came from getting the best of known mic terrorist Earl Sweatshirt–his production values have finally caught up enough to push him past the scrappy sidekick division into the big leagues. – Pitchfork

Azealia Banks Throws More Shots At Eminem For Not Beefing With Men

(AllHipHop News) Yesterday Azealia Banks was back to launching rocks at Eminem on Twitter. After blasting Slim Shady last month for his lyrics aimed at singer Lana Del Rey, AB had more words for the Detroit emcee. This time Banks called Em out for what she sees as his tendency to lyrically attack women but refuses to beef with male entertainers.

The “Chasing Time” performer has had her fair share of feuds as well. Her hit list includes Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, T.I., Tiny, Lil Kim, Jim Jones, and Angel Haze.

Nas On Racial Divide: It’s Not Cool For U.S. To Look Like Apartheid South Africa (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Hip Hop legend Nas addresses social issues in his music and through public appearances. The Queens native continued speaking on the important topics facing the nation in an interview with Time. During the discussion, Nas made a comparison between the appearance of the current racial divide in America to the battles over the institutionalized segregation in pre-1990’s South Africa.

“It’s not cool to look like Apartheid South Africa 1988. How are we going to be the free world or the most powerful country when inside this country we’re fighting because of skin color? That’s just embarrassing,” said Nas. “I’m one of the guys that’s out there saying, ‘Listen, it has to stop.”

Nas was marched alongside protesters at the recent Eric Garner inspired “Millions March NYC”. He was joined by mogul Russell Simmons and music executive Kevin Liles as well.

The creator of the rap masterpiece Illmatic later discussed the importance of African-American youth knowing the history of Black people that started with civilizations on the African continent. Nas also expressed his belief that the American public has the ability to come together.

“There’s a lot of healing that needs to come onto this country,” stated Nas. “America, we are really smart enough to figure it out, but I guess it’s safer to hang out and be ignorant, be hateful, and think that one person is better than the other.”

Stacey Dash: My Cousin Dame Dash Told Me To Keep My Mouth Shut On Conservative Views

(AllHipHop News) Actress Stacey Dash has become more well-known in recent years for voicing her political views on Fox News than her movie roles. According to the star of Clueless, the decision to publicly present her conservatism has caused her to be ostracized from her family – including from her cousin, Hip Hop mogul Dame Dash.

[ALSO READ: Dame Dash Suggests Jim Jones Is Not Original Dipset; Jones Calls Dash A “C*ck Sucker”]

In an interview with Edit Magazine, Stacey revealed:

My family and I have not spoken. My cousin Damon [“Dame” Dash] and my brother [Darien, CEO of DME] were role models to me because they were great capitalists. Now we’re not really talking because they were the ones who told me to keep my mouth shut.

When I get hateful tweets, I just re-tweet them. And then my fans pile in and attack the haters while I sit back. They felt that I should do certain things because I’m black.  Certain friends don’t speak to me any more either. But you know what? In the street I get [approached by] so many people of every color saying: ‘Thank you so much for standing up and being so brave.’ I thought it was time to have a black president and that it would unite us in such a profound way. But as a country, I don’t think we’ve been so divided since the Civil Rights Movement. I mean, isn’t it extraordinary that we are even discussing race in 2014?

Some of Stacey Dash’s public comments have drawn criticism for being too extreme. In July, she suggested that Kanye West should experience being raped in prison. Then in October Dash expressed her belief that African-Americans have become less educated during President Barack Obama’s time in office.

Quilly Ft. City Rominiecki – "Strange Land"

CITY ROMINIECKI teams up with his OnDek labelmate Quilly to tell a gritty tale of Quilly’s life growing up in the “Strange Land” of Philadelphia. The Chop Mosley-directed video could be considered a Quilly biopic, visually reminiscent of the cold, harsh realities of his hometown. CITY ROMINIECKI adds a gruff and memorable hook to a song destined to be a banger.
