15 Producers That Got Our Attention In 2013

In 2013 we heard a ton of producers that grabbed us and shook us by the shoulders with their choices of high hats and bass, horns or keys…samples of songs we never knew and ones that we’ve loved forever. A few stand out to us specifically for various reasons. Some had songs that were super catchy, some made us bob our heads excessively and some were just plain good and we fell in love with the music.

These producers that we’re sharing with you are from all walks of Hip Hop and all various levels in the game. Some you’ve known for years and some are new friends we’re hearing for the first time. But all are welcomed to our ears!

Now while these are by no means the only producers that made serious noise in 2013 these are a few that grabbed us for one special reason or another! And don’t worry in 2014 we at AllHipHop are going to invest a little more time into listening out for astounding producers and shedding light not just on the establishment guys…but on the Indie and Emerging producers that are out here beasting as well! Without them there could be no music and we want to recognize and respect that across the board! With that said..check out some of the guys who had us paying attention in 2013!

Dony 5ive

Ahk 2g’s

Upendo Moore

The only one we don’t have a video for is this young producer from Seattle, Washington. And why is that you ask? Well, because we stumbled upon him quite by accident and to our surprise this 15-year-old phenom impressed us like few have over the last few years!

He was a seasoned pro with his music and he’s not even into his senior year of High School yet! We’re going to be formally introducing you to him in the coming weeks and TRUST US you will be impressed too! He’s amazing with the blends and the samples are well disguised…but one of our favorite things about this young one was his knowledge of the legends which surpasses some of these cats in the game who have a good 10 to 15 years experience on him. We want to make sure you remember his name and where you saw him FIRST…because we guarantee you are going to be hearing from him…A LOT..and soon! Stay tuned because he truly is the next generation of emerging talent!

Hip-Hop Rumors: Is There Trouble With Wiz And Amber?

I don’t know what’s going on with Wiz and Amber. But Rhymes With Snitch seems to be more in the know that I am right now. It seems like there’s something awry with Wiz-roid. What’s crazy is that this is playing out on social media, it seems. Check out the way it plays out:

Wiz is generally pretty good with the fans/groupies but something has changed as of late.

What’s up with these tights he’s got on though?

The AHH Community Presents 2013’s Winners (and 1 Loser)

AllHipHop’s message boards were in hot debate over the year that was Hip Hop’s most productive, polarizing and groundbreaking.  We asked them to weigh in on some of the big winners and losers of the past 12 months. Needless to say voting was close (Kanye’s “New Slaves” lost song of the year by 1 vote). Kendrick won big. Drake, well he lost some cool points and the rest you have to see for yourself.

~~~~~~
It’s not often a rapper reigns in unanimous votes for rapper of the year without a major studio release. But sorry Push, the numbers on the board don’t lie in this case. Kendrick set the media world ablaze in 2013, starting with the remix to “B#### Don’t Kill My Vibe” featuring Jay-Z. On the official Youtube release from TDE, the timeless photo of a young Kobe Bryant huddled next to Michael Jordan is displayed, with MJ giving the eager youngster tips on his game. The symbolism is obvious, with the Los Angeles native rapidly becoming the Kobe Bryant of the rap game. Admittedly, Kendrick was forced to write a second verse after listening to the Mike Jordan of Raps’, but in no time Kendrick “dropped 50” on Big Sean’s “Control.” The almost demonic intensity of Kendrick’s flow and lyricism on “Control” caused the internet to explode, almost completely overshadowing two hot verses from Big Sean and Jay Electronica. Napoleon style, Kendrick name-dropped all of the relevant competition of his era in a brilliant chess move to spark more intensity in this new-aged Nickelodeon era of good feelings. It was the equivalent to Kobe dropping 81 points against Toronto, and of course, feelings were caught by a lot of rappers…but most notably in Toronto. Drake has remained loyal to his “you-diss-me-you-won’t-get-a-response” philosophy until Kendrick became a full-fledged problem, and now the two are steadily involved in a subliminal war of words that has the potential to become in 2014 the biggest battle on wax since Jay-Z and Nas. Poetic justice indeed. — Kellan Miller
BEST HIP HOP ARTIST
KENDRICK LAMAR
MAINSTREAM ALBUM OF THE YEAR
PUSHA T My Name is My Name
Pusha T dropped an incredible album, it was undeniable. There were a lot of great albums especially commercial albums like Magna Carter Holy Grail and Nothing Was The Same this year but MNIMN stood out as the strongest. Lyrically, production wise, conceptually it’s a very good album and album of the year.
HIP HOP HEADLINE OF THE YEAR
Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse
Headline of the Year? Easily Kendrick’s verse on “Control” he claimed to be the King of 2 Coasts and issued a bold challenge to any of his rivals and peers. What made his verse so crazy is that he came at people he has done tracks with. New York didn’t take too kindly to him saying he was their “King” and everybody dropped a response to “Control”. There was no bigger headline.
See the discussion HERE
LOSS OF THE YEAR
DRAKE
While Drake had a good year in his own right, we felt he also took home the loss of the year. Hilarious internet memes from the “No New Friends” video shoot made him the laughing stock of the internet. The phenomenon “Drake is the type…” snaps lit the internet on fire. His emotional responses to Future and other artists such as Kendrick Lamar didn’t make things any better.
Infractions include:
  • Emotional reactions to online posters and media
  • Dropping artists that challenged him from tours
See the disscussion HERE
UNDERGROUND ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Killer Mike AND El-P  Run The Jewels
Run The Jewels (Killer Mike and El-P) are a match made in heaven, some of the best lyricism dropped this year and cohesive production made for one of the most underrated albums of 2013. Stand out tracks ? “A Christmas F*cking Miracle” , “Banana Clipper”, “No Come Down”, “Get It” – matter of fact the entire album and every track was fire. Definitely underground album of the year.
ALBUM OF THE YEAR
My Name is My Name – Pusha T
RAPPER OF THE YEAR
Kendrick Lamar
GROUP/LABEL/CLIQUE of the YEAR
TDE (Top Dawg Entertainment)
TDE cemented their place as the best label or crew in 2013. ScHoolBoy Q popped off, Kendrick Lamar put the team on and the BET Cypher featuring the whole crew let us know it’s their time. It’s safe to say the Black Hippies made their mark this year. New signees Isaiah Rashad and SZA were the icing on the cake. We await to see what they bring to the game in 2014.
SONG of the YEAR
“Control” by Big Sean ft. Kendrick Lamar & Jay Electronica
Big Sean’s “Control” song took Hip-Hop by storm, not only did every MC drop a hot verse but Kendrick Lamar stood out and shook up the entire game and had all of Hip-Hop in awe and responding to quite possibly one of the boldest verses in a long time.
COLLABO OF THE YEAR
“B#### Don’t Kill My Vibe(Remix)” Kendrick Lamar and Jay-Z
The remix to B#### Don’t Kill My Vibe was the collab of the year. Having Jay-Z appear on the record laying down vocals was huge. Kendrick came with a dope verse to compliment the G.O.A.T.
MIXTAPE OF THE YEAR
King Remembered in Time – Big K.R.I.T
Big KRIT’s A King Remembered In Time was such a powerful effort that it’s possible in the longrun people might say it was a classic.
BEST NEW ARTIST
Troy Ave
Troy Ave won out as the best new artist in 2013, New York City: The Album, White Christmas 2 with DJ Drama were incredible records. Bringing back the gritty sounds and feel of New York City reminiscent of the Dipset, G-Unit or D-Block crews that overtook the last decade. Troy Ave dropped great music and let it be known his mission to restore the feeling once lost in Hip-Hop. With his BSB crew, Young Lito and King Sevin it’ll be exciting to see what they bring to Hip-Hop in 2014.
VERSE of the YEAR
Kendrick Lamar’s Control Verse
Kendrick once again with the verse of the year in 2013, there were a lot of verses but we felt Kendrick’s verse had the biggest impact on Hip-Hop in 2013. Issuing challenges to every major artist in Hip-Hop while also challenging an entire coast all at once. Kendrick’s verse was one of the most news-worthy verses of the year.
T.I. Reminisces On Doe B’s Life At His Funeral (VIDEO)
(AllHipHop News) The funeral for slain rapper Doe B took place yesterday (January 4th) at True Divine Baptist Church in his hometown of Montgomery AL. The 22 year old Grand Hustle artist’s boss, T.I. gave an impassioned speech.
Doe B, born Glenn Thomas was murdered at hometown club Centennial Hill Bar and Grill on December 28th. During his speech, T.I. spoke on Thomas’ preference for studio sessions over club appearances:
Over here at Hustle Gang, we have a host of artists. All of them know that I tell them ‘listen, your talent is only going to get you so far.’ It’s the things that you learn, the things that you are able to do outside of the booth that will separate you from the rest. I said the same thing to Glen. He never left the studio. He never left the studio. He said ‘I’d rather be here than the club, because I know this is going to pay off.
After reminding the packed church that Grand Hustle is a “family business”, T.I. pledged to sustain the memory of his fallen comrade:
I will never let his life be lived in vain. All of my resources, all of my relationships, all of my efforts, all of my energy will be put forth to make sure that his dream lives on.
EXCLUSIVE: Freeway Rick Ross Issues Statement On Rapper Rick Ross & Authenticity In Hip Hop
(AllHipHop News) News broke last week that former drug dealer Freeway Rick Ross lost his appeal against his namesake rapper Rick Ross in state court. A California judge ruled that the Miami-based entertainer, whose real name is William Roberts II, had a first amendment right to use the name “Rick Ross” for his stage persona.
[ALSO READ: Rick Ross Wins Lawsuit Against Freeway Ricky Ross]
Freeway Rick originally filed a trademark infringement lawsuit in 2010 accusing the Maybach Music Group leader of stealing his name, image, and likeness in order to market his music. Freeway argued that his real life accounts of being a 1980’s drug kingpin were used by Roberts to create a fictional life story in order to further his career as a rap artist.
The case was dismissed later that year when it was determined by the court that Freeway did not have a valid trademark for his name because it was based on illegal activity. Freeway Ross re-filed the lawsuit in 2012 and again lost the case. That time it was on the grounds that the statute of limitations to file the suit had run out. He appealed the decision.
[ALSO READ: Rick Ross Wins Court Battle Against “Freeway Rick Ross”]
Judge Roger Boren again sided with Roberts in the most recent appeals process. Boren stated that despite the fact that some of his persona was based on Freeway Ross, the rapper “created original artistic works” that fall under his right to free expression.
After the latest court decision, Freeway Rick Ross is still speaking out on the issue of authenticity in Hip Hop culture, the glamorizing of illegal drug activity in its music, and the social impact on the young people who follow its artists.
Freeway Rick Ross issued the following statement to AllHipHop.com:
I respect Hip Hop as an art form and consider many of its artists some of my close friends. But I believe the art form owes an obligation of authenticity. You cannot go out and say you sold cocaine at Kilo to Metric ton scale and be so detached from the experience. If you do, you have an obligation to the youth to tell them the truth and not lie about the facts of your circumstance to try to further validate the mistruth.
There is a teachable moment about the state of our community when a man who has a respectable job as a correctional officer, has to recreate himself in my former image as a large-scale kingpin to gain what he feels is social acceptance as a successful man. I along with many others would have given it all up for stability and opportunity, when Reagan came into office with Trickle down gutting assistance programs, and privatization of public sector jobs ripped through our cities it strip-mined those types of stable jobs in a very short period from Black America.
I will continue to go around the country and speak at schools, speaking to the need for the youth to avoid getting caught up in the dope game. Also I will be going city to city giving artists that don’t get looks by labels Mixtape exposure. I look forward to the release of my autobiographical book due out in February, and film in development to help tell the truth about how Black American Cities developed and turned to drugs, the dope game and its consequences.
– Freeway Rick Ross
It has been estimated that Freeway Rick Ross had earnings in excess of $900 million with a profit of nearly $300 million during his run as the head of a nationwide cocaine enterprise. Ross was sentenced to life in prison in 1996, but he was later granted a reduced sentence for exhibiting model behavior.
Upon his release in 2009, Ross began giving speeches at rehab centers and halfway houses and running the Freeway Literacy Foundation. He has also been an outspoken critic of rappers using their music to focus mostly on the financially alluring side of the drug game.
Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Beyonce Dissing Jesus?
With this chick its either Beyonce can do no right or Beyonce can do no wrong.
The latest is that people are claiming that at a recent concert Beyonce deliberately blocked out Jesus at a concert. She put up an instagram pic of herself in front of an image of the last supper. Well, she placed herself in front of Jesus – smack dab in the middle. But, what’s so abnormal about this? There is a major uproar though, because people are swing it was done on purpose to block out Lord Jesus! And on a Sunday too? Oh, its ON! Seriously, I know people are calling this an act of the Illuminati, but do you REALLY think it is? Below is the image straight from her instagram.
So….is she dissing the son of God?
I think the fans created this, not Beyonce. Look at what they do? And then they get mad when its time to “bow down.” SMH.
You get the idea. You call Jay “Hova” so why can’t Bey be your Jesus. Just saying.
Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Luda Getting Married?
Hip-Hop Rumors: Did Ludacris Get Married?
Ludacris has been in the gossip hot seat ever since it was revealed that he fathered a child outside of his relationship with the lovely Eudoxie. Well, there are a number of rumors going around, but the prevailing one is that Luda has gotten married to Eudoxie. That’s what Sandra Rose is saying. Read below:
According to my sources, rapper Chris “Ludacris” Bridges is a happily married man!
The rumors began swirling a couple of months ago that Luda and his gorgeous med school fiancée, Eudoxie, jumped the broom sometime late last year. But it wasn’t until yesterday that his cousin, R&B Diva Monica, let the secret slip out in a casual tweet during a Mother’s Day family get together.
Mo tweeted:
“Romelo keeps forcing my cousin Fab to fly planes. Lol. U come here you are forced to be a boy. Lol”
Of course you know that Romelo is Mo’s youngest son. “Fab” is Eudoxie’s nickname, and now we know that Fab is Mo’s cousin — through marriage!
Monica married her husband, LA Lakers guard Shannon Brown, in a secret civil ceremony on November 22nd. But she let many of us in on her secret just two weeks later when she tweeted the date of her marriage. That tweet was just as nonchalant as the one she tweeted yesterday about Fab.
Congrats to Luda!
Now, on the record, Luda is supposedly telling people that he is definitely going to marry Eudoxie. She’s definitely told people she is staying with Luda. And the baby mom is mad. 2014 s off to a crazy start already.
Hip-Hop Rumors: Chief Keef Says “The Gang’s Done Changed”
According to VladTV, there is a lot of confusion going on with with good folks in Chicago. I can’t related to the gang situation out there, but it seems like Chief Keef has made some changes. Read below….
The various factions within Chicago’s tight-knit hip-hop scene can be quite confusing for outsiders to understand. There’s Glory Boyz Entertainment (GBE), Only the Family (OTF), 300, Glo Gang, and too many others to name off the top. However, most of them aren’t even affiliated with one another despite popular belief. For example, Lil Durk claims OTF and 300, not GBE, while some others have some ties to all three. There have even been some very serious beefs between the factions.
But now Chief Keef has potentially made it a lot easier to understand because, according to his recent tweet, GBE is “nomore.” The Glo Gang rapper recent tweeted, “Now signing Street ni**as Only Alabama. Detroit. LasVegas. BayAreaCa. and Lot more U gotta be Turnt up ? #GloGang New label Nomoe GBE!” What exactly does this mean for the rappers/people who were affiliated with GBE? Are they still tied to Chief Keef or are they looking to go their seperate ways? Little is known at the moment, but Chief Keef is currently looking for “street ni**as only.”
He followed up his tweet with: “Oh n b**ches As we’ll I’m Done Playin. I ain’t been takin advantage of sh*t. I got a movie deal don’t use it. My own label Only gang Signed,”
Check out his tweet in the slide above.
Former G-Unit Rapper Mazaradi Fox Killed, 50 Cent Offers Condolences
(AllHipHop News) Former G-Unit rapper Mazaradi Fox was shot and killed Friday January 3 in his hometown of Queens, NY. Fox was 42.
50 Cent offered his condolences.
“Saddened by the news of Mazaradi’s tragic passing my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends,” 50 Cent said in Twitter.
The murder occurred roughly at 4:10 pm Friday by shooter that was wearing a ski mask, according to the New York Daily News. When a white SUV pulled up, Fox was shot multiple times, along with others in the area.
Fox signed to G-Unit in 2007, but never put out an album on the iconic label. By 2008, he was off G-Unit.
