Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell Fighting Marvin Gaye Estate Over “Blurred Lines”

(AllHipHop News) The estate of one of Robin Thicke’s musical influences is threatening to take legal action against his most successful single, “Blurred Lines”.

According to The Hollywood Reporter,  T.I. (Clifford Harris), Pharrell (Pharrell Williams) and Robin Thicke filed a lawsuit yesterday (August 15th) against the estate of Marvin Gaye who have claimed that “Blurred Lines” bare copy songs they have rights over. According to the suit, the Gaye estate is claiming “Blurred Lines” copies elements of Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up”

But there are no similarities between plaintiffs’ composition and those the claimants allege they own, other than commonplace musical elements. Plaintiffs created a hit and did it without copying anyone else’s composition.

The three artists are looking admission that “Blurred Lines” does not copy from Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up” and that the Gaye estate not pursue any further legal action on the grounds of copyright infringment.

The estate, which also owns The Funkadelics catalog, has alleged that the song also borrows from The Funkadelic’s “Sexy Ways”. Funkadelic frontman and funk legend George Clinton took to his personal Twitter account to voice his support for Robin Thicke in the ongoing legal dispute:

Papoose “Control” Freestyle Responds to Kendrick Lamar

“Yo Kendrick good look on that Summer Jam move, but you ain’t the king of sh*t”-Papoose

The quiet before the storm has passed and we are in full on flood mode with the responses to Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” verse. Up now is Brooklyn’s own Papoose who recently reentered the national consciousness thanks to Kendrick giving him a few minutes of his set time at this year’s Hot 97 Summer Jam.

Pap digs deeper than simply dissing Kendrick on his lyrical skills and speaks on the emasculating of the black man saying “Kendrick, Kanye and Drake act feminine/they wear clothes you usually find women in.”

Killer Mike & El-P Give Their Take On The Hype Over Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” Verse (VIDEO)

(AlHipHop News) Hip Hop duo Killer Mike and El-P gave an interview recently to answer a question about the main topic of discussion in Hip Hop over the past week – Kendrick Lamar’s verse on “Control”. While acknowledging that Kendrick’s verse is dope, El-P says it’s “crazy” that people are now getting excited over a rapper focusing on lyrics.

[ALSO READ: Wale Responds To Kendrick Lamar’s “Control” (VIDEO)]

“It’s so funny to me to see people freak out. All these born-again Hip Hop purists,” says El-P. “Lyrics are important. No sh*t. Some of us been going for the throat our whole careers. Me and Mike, we listen to that sh*t, and we laugh, like ‘yes.’ Other motherf*ckers are sitting there sweating. Not us. We’re just like, cool, we got another one on our team.”

Some listeners have misinterpreted Kendrick’s motive with his rap as “beefing” with other rappers, but El-P points out that it was really in the spirit of friendly competition something that all emcees should be striving to do.

“It’s not the East Coast versus the West Coast,” adds El-P. “He just got on the track and ripped it, said what he wanted to. That’s what we do. That’s what everyone should do.”

“I’m just glad the culture is getting back on some rap sh*t,” said Mike. “I suggest a lot of y’all sucker-ass rappers get together, form a tag team, and try to compete, because right now you’re looking at the greatest tag team walking the face of the earth.”

Killer Mike and El-P released their collaborative album Run The Jewels in June.

Daily Word: Choose YOU!!

Happy Great Day to Be Alive!!! Welcome to the day that will have the most impact on your future….. TODAY! Today’s Daily Word is dedicated to choosing you! If you had a choice between making yourself happy or making others happy, which would you choose? If you had a choice between living in misery or living happily ever after, which would you go for? If you had a choice to have FULL control of your life, would you take it? Choose YOU! Beginning now and until forever, always make sure YOU are putting YOU first! Imagine a teacher who is learning at the same time as the student, or a professional singer who had no vocal training, or how about a boxer who is fighting a prize fight who has never stepped in the ring? All of the above are a recipe for disaster!  Choosing you isn’t about being selfish, its about loving yourself enough to know that you are no good to anyone else unless you become the best that you can possibly be! Effective immediately, I need you to look in the mirror and tell yourself>>>> “Today I choose life. Because I deserve it, I choose to be happy no matter what. I am worthy… Worthy of love. Worthy of peace. Worthy of praise. Worthy of happiness. Worthy of pleasure. I feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – Today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.” Saying this to yourself as you look in the mirror will give you the freedom you need to accept yourself RIGHT NOW unconditionally! You, more than anyone else in the world deserves your love! Stop being stingy and give it to YOU!!!

Robin Thicke, Pharrell, & T.I. Suing Marvin Gaye’s Family & Bridgeport Music Over “Blurred Lines”

(AllHipHop News) Robin Thicke, Pharrell Williams, and Clifford “T.I.” Harris have filed a lawsuit against the family of the late soul singer Marvin Gaye and Bridgeport Music over their huge hit “Blurred Lines” according to The Hollywood Reporter. The suit is a preemptive strike against Gaye’s family and the owner some of the music of the band Funkadelic.

[ALSO CHECK OUT: #AlternativePick: Robin Thicke Ft. Kendrick Lamar “Give It 2 U”]

The Gaye family and Bridgeport were said to be considering suing Thicke, Williams, and T.I., because of what they see as similarities between “Blurred Lines'” and Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” and Funkadelic’s “Sexy Ways.”

The suit states:

Plaintiffs, who have the utmost respect for and admiration of Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic and their musical legacies, reluctantly file this action in the face of multiple adverse claims from alleged successors in interest to those artists. Defendants continue to insist that plaintiffs’ massively successful composition, “Blurred Lines,” copies ‘their’ compositions… But there are no similarities between plaintiffs’ composition and those the claimants allege they own, other than commonplace musical elements. Plaintiffs created a hit and did it without copying anyone else’s composition.

The lawsuit also accuses the Gaye family of “claiming ownership of an entire genre, as opposed to a specific work” and the intent of “Blurred Lines” was to “evoke an era” not to infringe on the copyright of any other work. Frankie Christian Gaye, Marvin Gaye III, and Nona Marvisa Gaye were all named as defendants in the case.

Bridgeport Music was named as company. Bridgeport has been involved in several high-profile copyright cases. One of the most significant being 2005’s Bridgeport Music, Inc. v. Dimension Films which helped set the precedent that sampling any part of someone’s work no matter the length of the sample is copyright infringement.

The case stemmed from N.W.A. sampling a two second guitar riff from Funkadelic’s “Get Off Your Ass and Jam” for the song “100 Miles and Runnin’.” A 2006 article on slate.com called Bridgeport Music a “sample troll.”

The current “Blurred Lines” case does not involve sampling concerns. The case was filed in U.S. District Court in California.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Drake Writing A Deathblow To Kendrick?

I’m being told by sources that Drake is fuming mad about the whole Kendrick thingy. What some people fail to realize is before Kendrick dropped his now classic album, Drake put the lil homey on tour and exposed him to all of those fans. Basically, Drake helped Kendrick get his music out there, insiders are saying. What does that mean? Maybe there is a bit of a case of:

Yeah, basically…the hand got bit and bit badly!

Its all in the spirit of competition but some dudes are stewing. I’m hearing the same about Meek Mill, that he’s sitting tight til the time is right for him. For Drake, that time is sooner than later since he’s presently in the studio recording and has reason to promote the “beef” to sell some records. And, I know cats ain’t all on Drake with his light-skinned, singing ways, but he’s got bars when he wants. We can’t forget just this year.

So, Drake has something for Kendrick. In due time, grass hoppers. In due time.

Hip-Hop Rumors: See How Future Has Taken A Loss…DAG!

EXCLUSIVE! PLEASE LINK BACK AND GIVE CREDIT IF YOU USE THIS. THANK YOU KINDLY!

I don’t know much of anything about Future’s label Freebandz or his artists for that matter. Its like something serious has to happen for them to get on my radar. But, I guess we are at that moment when things cold get serious. Because, right now I am getting word that Doe Boy, one of the rappers in Future’s camp, is about to do some time in jail. That’s the word. I am getting that Doe Boy, who is from Cleveland, has gotten close to 2 years in jail for aggravated robbery (or some sh*t, my source says). Apparently, the alleged incident involved a gun and that’s the charge that would not go away. So, I am hearing that he ultimately had to suck up and catch a “carrying firearms” case. 18 months in the bing and I don’t mean searchable images.

I assume this won’t hurt Future too much.

If Only Billionaires Were Stopped and Frisked…

________________

The views and opinions expressed herein are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of AllHipHop.com

If the NYPD routinely stopped and frisked rich, white billionaires who have amassed tremendous wealth while Main Street suffered the greatest economic collapse since the Great Depression, Mayor Bloomberg might be singing a different tune. But that’s right, intense greed isn’t a crime; being black or brown in New York City definitely can be.

In a brazen press conference on Monday, Bloomberg delivered a harsh rejection of federal district court judge Scheindlin’s decision to rule that the NYPD’s practice of ‘stop-and-frisk’ violated the constitutional rights of people, as well as her conclusion that broad reforms (including the establishment of an independent monitor) must be implemented. Snapping at reporters, and at times blatantly cutting them off, the mayor was in true form. Angrily admonishing the judge, civil rights groups and the media, he showed New Yorkers — and the world — what happens when someone dares to challenge a man who has governed with a virtual iron fist and believes that nobody can ever tell him no.

Well Mr. Mayor, those days are over. For years, minorities of this great city have complained, rallied, organized, petitioned and championed for change against the policing tactics of the NYPD. Whether it’s profiling, surveillance, unfairly stopping and frisking, harassing or just plain disrespect, the number of complaints and lawsuits against the NYPD should have warranted reform much earlier.

According to Comptroller John Liu’s office, the number of new Police Action claims rose 22 percent in 2012, and nearly doubled in the past five fiscal years — rising 94 percent. As his office highlights, Police Action claims result from alleged improper police conduct including false arrest or imprisonment, shooting of a suspect, excessive force or assault, etc. Settlements and judgments paid by the city resulting from claims against the police were $151.9 million in 2012 alone according to the Comptroller’s office.

The amount of taxpayer money spent on these incidents is enough to make anyone’s head spin. It’s simply out of control. And it might be time for the Mayor and Police Commissioner Kelly to accept the reality that police officers need to be retrained and an outside monitor must be established.

During Monday’s press conference, Bloomberg continuously touted the fact that most crime is committed in black, Latino and ‘low-income’ neighborhoods. I suggest he and others try spending time in some of these communities and see just how long it takes for the police to arrive when someone calls for help. Why is it that concerned residents don’t receive the same amount of protection and attention from authorities as those that live in wealthier neighborhoods? Why does it take so long for an ambulance to arrive in an emergency? And why do their needs fall on deaf ears?

If Bloomberg and Kelly truly cared about the safety and security of all New Yorkers, they would work with grassroots organizations on the ground in the toughest parts of the city that are striving every day to better their environments. They would put money into programs that would provide for more after-school programs, community centers and other organizations that help keep kids off of the street. And they would allocate more funding for school improvements, job training centers and job creation mechanisms instead of building more prisons and putting a virtual army of police canvassing entire neighborhoods.

Bloomberg loves to emphasize the notion that crime in NYC has fallen tremendously, which it has. But let’s not pretend that it’s because of ‘stop-and-frisk’. According to the New York Civil Liberties Union, New Yorkers have been subject to stops and street interrogations more than four million times since 2002, and nearly nine out of 10 stopped and frisked have been completely innocent. Further, the NYCLU states that in 2002 there were 1,892 victims of gunfire and 97,296 stops; in 2011 there were still 1,821 victims of gunfire and a record 685,724 stops.

The number of stops of young black men exceeded the entire population of young black men in the city. According to the NYCLU, a weapon was only found in 1.8 percent of blacks and Latinos who were frisked, meanwhile a weapon was found in 3.8 percent of whites who were frisked. Why is there not more emphasis placed on this crucial detail? If ‘stop-and-frisk’ truly eliminated or reduced crime and violence, people in the communities that the mayor looks down upon would be the first to welcome it with open arms.

Instead of criminalizing people — mostly young black and Latino men — we need police officers that actually live in the communities they serve. We need cooperation between law enforcement and residents. The current practice of ‘stop-and-frisk’ only drives a wedge between different groups as if we’re not the most diverse city that should serve as the definition of a melting pot.

In the years that Bloomberg has been in office, minorities have found themselves pushed further and further out to the boroughs and outskirts of the city, leaving the island of Manhattan (especially below 96th Street) primarily for a certain segment of the population. Not only has that greatly diminished the culture of the city, but it has established a divide so transparent that everyone should be alarmed.

Recently, Mayor Bloomberg vetoed the Community Safety Act — comprised of two bills designed to curb the NYPD’s relentless pattern of racial profiling. Approved by the City Council earlier this summer, the Act calls for an independent Inspector to oversee the NYPD, as well as an expansion of the definition of profiling. It was hailed as a long overdue achievement by many who fully understand the depths of police harassment and overreach. Mayor Bloomberg on the other hand, not only denounced the Act, but added insult to the systemic policing problem with his outrageous claims that not enough people of color were stopped by cops. He promised to push back against the Act, and several Council members have stated that they have received pressure from police precincts and others to change their vote.

It’s easy to sit and dismiss the grievances of people when you have no concept of what it feels like to be stopped and harassed countless times for simply walking down the street, or on your way to work or school. Before the mayor and police commissioner condescendingly ignore the will of the people, perhaps they should keep in mind that they are here to serve us and not their own interests.

Bloomberg stated on Monday that throughout the case under Judge Scheindlin’s supervision, he didn’t believe that they were getting a fair trial. Guess now he knows how millions of New Yorkers have been feeling for far too long.
