Hip Hop was founded on sampling and reimagining songs usually from a different genre. So it is quite a surreal experience when those genres reverse the script and cover hip hop songs. Sometimes the results reveal meanings previously unnoticed and other times it’s an awkward rendition. Here are a few recent covers of hip hop songs and how they fair:
Courtney Love covers Jay-Z’s “99 Problems”
Verdict: AWKWARD
Forget the fact that ex Mrs. Cobain speeds some lines up to fit the new acoustic instrumental, her failure to omit the N-word makes this extremely awkward. The Hole lead singer herself cannot even escape the uncomfortable irony of the lyrics at points even stopping the guitar strumming and laughing during the lyric “because I’m African.” Covers are supposed to put a new spin on songs but this one spun a hip hop classic out of whack.
Adrien Brody covers Notorious B.I.G.’s “Ten Crack Commandments”
Verdict: RIVETING
Before the Oscar award winner even uttered a single lyric from the Notorious B.I.G.’s epochal “Ten Crack Commandments” he deemed Biggie one of his generation’s greatest poets. The level of respect for Frank White’s work was clearly evident in his dramatic retelling of to the audience at the Academy of American Poets back in 2011. While missing the deep voiced ferocity Notorious B.I.G. spewed on the original, Adrien’s methodical breakdown of each rule retains the severity of these street codes that B.I.G. was aiming to convey. Word up.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt covers R. Kelly’s “Ignition (Remix)”
Verdict: HILARIOUS
What is funnier? The guy who awkwardly tried to get a date in 10 Things I Hate About You singing “I’m about to get my key and put it in your ignition” or that the Ohio State University crowd knew the song after “I’m not trying to be rude”? The Chapelle Show parodied this brilliant, but Gordon-Levitt’s cover of the actual lyrics add an extra level of hilarity with his folk singer voice trying to give his love interest that “beep beep”. From #1 on the Billboard Hip Hop/R&B charts to being the inspiration for musical comedy. Robert Sylvester Kelly for the win.
Niykee Heaton covers Pusha T’s “Blocka”
VERDICT: Surprisingly REALLY good
After Pusha T saw this 18 year old high school student from Geneva, Illinois turn his gruesome street tales into a stripped down acoustic medley, he tweeted “Street Music Has No Boundaries”. Niykee Heaton’s almost sorrowful high notes convey the deep rooted desperation found in these lyrics of a man praying to God but also selling drugs. This is quite surprising because she bounces between melodically enraged to a cute bravado for lines like “f*ck you and your bassline” with relative ease. Kudos for replacing the N-Word with “sigga”(or was it singer?).
(AllHipHop News) R&B star Chris Brown may be facing serious consequences from the late night parking lot brawl with Frank Ocean over the weekend.
The Odd Future member wants to press charges against Brown for allegedly attacking him on January 27, outside West Hollywood’s Westlake Studios on Sunday Night.
L.A. Sheriff’s office spokesman Steve Whitman told The New York Post that Ocean is “desirous of prosecution.”
Police are now looking to speak with Brown about the incident.
According to TMZ, Chris Brown’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, contacted law enforcement officials and said that Brown is willingly to speak with detectives about the entire incident, claiming that there was no wrong doing on his part.
Geragos also claims to have video evidence that can prove that Brown never threw a punch.
The video is said to also show that Ocean wasn’t directly involved in any violent acts either, and that the fight was only between the two singer’s camps.
Brown may not be completely cleared because a witness stated that Brown was the person who threw the first punch, and the video reportedly doesn’t show who started the fight.
The footage only captured the altercation after the two entourages where no longer in the camera-free area of the parking lot.
Geragos’s insistence that Brown was not directly involved is extremely important.
“The Look At Me Now” singer is still on probation for assaulting then-girlfriend Rihanna the night before the 2009 Grammy Awards, causing both to miss the event.
Brown’s latest run-in with the law may put a dent in plans for this year’s Grammy ceremony as well.
The Post is also reporting that Brown and Rihanna were scheduled to perform together at the awards show on February 10th, but the Brown-Ocean incident is likely to end the potential on stage public reunion of the on-again-off-again couple.
Chris Brown and Ocean will also face off in the Best Urban Contemporary Album Grammy category this year for their respective LP’s Fortune and channel ORANGE.
The two will compete against fellow nominee Miguel’s Kaleidoscope Dream.

Rick Ross! That dude is getting a lot of mainstream attention thanks to the attempt on his life! But the cops are taking it very serious and they don’t think its staged like 50 Cent suggested. The popo are looking directly at the GD’s and they are looking specifically at the GD’s in Chicago! They are basically suggesting that this is coming from the man Larry Hoover! If that should be the case, s**t would be MAJOR THICK suddenly!
See, what happened – supposedly – is Rick Ross used some of the symbols and and logos of the GDs and didn’t pay the required “fees.” When Ross was in Fort Lauderdale, they opened fire with the AK-47!!!!
There’s another theory of a boss out there that wants Rick Ross’ head on a platter but I’m gonna leave that along.
Sorry, 50…those are real bullet holes!

They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry! -illseed.

What’s this? 50 Cent is going there! I guess if you once got shot nine times, this may make you an expert at these types of things. 50 said:
“Hahaha fat boy hit the building?lol it looks staged to me. No hole’s in da car.”
I don’t know what Ross would gain from faking an assignation attempt. Do you?
I remember once upon a time, people thought 50 Cent was faking his gun shots. Remember those days?
ANYWAY….
I am hearing that Ross has upset some people, and we know this. But, it has been impressed upon me that this is the work of the GD’s. I heard its another well-known gang of dudes that Ross once was cool with, but now is not. What are you hearing? Hit me up at ki*********@***il.com!

(AllHipHop News) How much free time does a group known for touring most of the year have in between a nightly gig on The Jimmy Fallon Show and recording for their 13th album? Enough to headline a tailgating party on the day of the Super Bowl.
Twenty year Hip Hop veteran collective, The Roots will headline Rolling Stone magazine-hosted Jeep Heroes Tailgate at New Orleans’ Generation Hall. Drummer Questlove will also have a DJ set at the festivities. The event is set to take place on February 3rd from Noon to 4pm.
Recently The Roots revealed the perplexing title of their upcoming 13th studio album, “& Then You Shoot Your Cousin”. Additionally, Questlove informed Billboard that a collaborative album with English singer-songwriter legend Elvis Costello will precede “& Then You Shoot Your Cousin”.
The Roots will also hold their sixth annual Roots Picnic on June 1st 2013 at Festival Pier in Philadelphia, PA. Artists slated to perform include, but are not limited to Gary Clark Jr, Joey Bada$$, Trinidad James, Hit-Boy and hip hop legends Naughty By Nature.
(AllHipHop News) After premature leaks, label politics and intriguing promotional tactics, West Coast MC and the hip-hop blogosphere’s sporadic genius, Blu , plans on officially releasing his lost major label debut album, No York!. On March 26th, Fat Beats Distribution and Nature Sounds will give No York! a proper retail release with special CD edition and Vinyl packaging.
The CD release will arrive with a 12-page booklet as well as a poster, and the vinyl release is packed with a soon-to-be-rare four-LP set with three bonus tracks not found on the CD release. The album can be pre-ordered at Nature Sounds and each pre-order comes with an instant free download link. Production on this album is helmed by notable producers such as Flying Lotus, Dibia$e as well as longtime collaborator Exile and many others. The features seem to retain the same guests as the leaked version with Wu-Tang’s U-God, west coast hip hop mainstays U-N-I and Pac D## joining a diverse cast of contributors.
The history of previous “releases” of this album range from truly altruistic to quite odd. After originally being slated for release through Sire/Warner Brothers Records, Blu handed out free copies of the album to the audience at Rock The Bells in 2011 because of company turmoil according to Blu. Following that “release”, Blu made No York! available for release through UGHH.com back in 2011. Also, there is currently a No York! mixtape streaming on DatPiff with the same tracklisting as the one that has been circulating since the album’s initial premature release.
Blu has been an eccentric underground hip hop wordsmith since him and Exile’s classic debut mixtape, Below The Heavens sent hip hop into a frenzy in 2007. Back in December of 2011, an unmixed version of Blu and Exile’s follow-up, Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them was released on Bandcamp. Following the release and label interest, a fully mixed and mastered version of the mixtape was re-released on September 4th, 2012.
(AllHipHop News) Last night Maybach Music Group ringleader Rick Ross barely escaped with his life, evading shots and driving his car into a Fort. Lauderdale apartment building.
Now rapper 50 Cent, who is also Rick Ross’ rival, is saying it was all a hoax.
While the two have a longstanding beef, 50 Cent says that since there were no bullet holes in the vehicle, that it was all fake.
“Hahaha fat boy hit the building?lol it looks staged to me.
No hole’s in da car http://instagr.am/p/VCHWuPML2G/” 50 Cent tweeted.
“hahaha that boy was spooked. I ride like OBAMA level 6 built proof, bomb proof, you already know. #SMSaudio,” 50 Cent added a few hours later.
According to Fort Lauderdale police “dozens” of shots were fired at the vehicle, none of which hit the Rolls Royce.
Several buildings in the area were also struck by gunfire.
“It was just a lot of gunfire. Bop, bop, bop, bop. It sounded like it was automatic,” an employee at a local diner called the Floridian.
Another witness saw Rick Ross and his girlfriend, Shateria Moragne-el, fired upon, but what police said was an automatic rifle.
“They looked disheveled. They looked like they had been through something,” a witness stated.
Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C., and the Beastie Boys have all been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And Public Enemy will join them soon as 2013 inductees. Finally, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has started acknowledging Hip-Hop.
It is only right that the next Hip-Hop inductee be Hip-Hop’s first solo superstar, LL Cool J. With him co-hosting The Grammys in a few weeks and the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony taking place in April. Even the queen of all media, Oprah, sat down with the G.O.A.T for her “Next Chapter” series.
AllHipHop.com compiled a list of ten reasons to respect LL’s legend. These could also serve as good arguments for why the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should nominate and induct LL Cool J for this prestigious honor next year. It’s not a comeback if you’ve never left.
10). Taken as a whole, Walking With a Panther is not one of LL’s career highlights. However, one of its singles, “Going Back to Cali,” is. The orchestral vibe and stop-and-start dragging of the beat is something really cool and gives the record a unique sound. LL Cool J first merged East and West when the L.A. Posse produced his Bigger and Deffer album, and he did it again this go-round by way of a song’s title and video.
9). Evidence that Hip-Hop was becoming a cultural phenomenon in 1980s was apparent because its influence reached outside of music. The cool attitudes of rappers were able to go from wax to wardrobe, and consumers loved it (and still do). If Run-D.M.C. were unofficial spokesman for Adidas sneakers, LL was the same thing for Kangol hats. In other words, if LL Cool J hasn’t received a check from Kangol yet, he’s long overdue for one.
8). It was shocking when LL released “Father” on 1997’s Phenomenon. Over the course of four verses, LL discusses how his biological father shot his mom and Grandpa and then how he suffered physical abuse at the hands of his stepfather. It’s a lot to take in, but it still only scratches the surface. At the end of the song, he says, “That’s just the tip of the iceberg look/It’s too long for a song but perfect for a book.”
7). One of LL Cool J’s most successful singles, “Hey Lover,” featured Boyz II Men. But even with such a high-profile guest appearance, it was still an ambitious undertaking considering that the beat sampled Michael Jackson’s “The Lady in My Life.” It all worked out though. The song was a hit and even won a Grammy.
6). With The Roots as the house-band on one of late night’s most popular shows, it is easy to forget that Hip-Hop didn’t always come with instruments. But in April of 1991, LL Cool J broke new ground by putting on an acoustic rap show on MTV Unplugged. Even with De La Soul and MC Lyte appearing on the broadcast as well, LL stole the show with his performance of “Mama Said Knock You Out.”
5). The battle between Mr. Smith and Canibus is engraved in Hip-Hop history. But even cooler than the diss rhymes back and forth is how LL Cool J thanked Canibus “ 4 inspiration” in the liner notes of his G.O.A.T. album.
4). Spoonie Gee’s “Love Rap” and Sugarhill Gang’s “The Lover in You” both precede LL Cool J’s “I Need Love.” However, “I Need Love” is rap’s first ballad and it assisted in turning the record’s performer into a sex symbol. It also presented a strength in vulnerability which is something that LL has tapped into many times since because of his success rate with that approach.
3). Mama Said Knock You is a landmark in LL Cool J’s catalogue and is one of Hip-Hop’s greatest comebacks. With Marley Marl behind the boards and Mr. Smith behind the mic, there is no way they could fail. They didn’t; the album is a classic.
2). James Todd Smith is planning to release his thirteenth studio album, Authentic Hip-Hop, in the near future. Most
rappers don’t last three albums, or even three years. LL is going on 13 albums and almost thirty years respectively. If longevity is any indication of success in rap, LL Cool J is one of the best to ever do it.
1). LL Cool J’s first album, Radio, not only launched his career, but it was also Def Jam’s first full-length release. It made LL a star, plus helped producer (or “reducer”, according to the album’s back-cover credit) Rick Rubin earn a name for himself outside the realm of punk rock. And the rest is history.
Battle of the Ballots
Here are five other Hip-Hop acts (in the performance category) that should be elected by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation for possible induction in years to come. Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record.
In no particular order:
UGK
Eric B. & Rakim
Snoop Dogg
Wu-Tang Clan
Nas
Note: N.W.A was nominated for induction in 2013.
Do you agree or disagree about LL Cool J? Why or why not? Who do you think should be inducted next? Share your thoughts in the comments section!
Happy Monday my destined and determined! Welcome to the start of a new week and the best day of your life! The day you realize that the phrase “you reap what you sow” is not just a cliche” but actually how the universe works. Today’s Daily Word is dedicated to working hard and playing harder (in that order). Many of us while on our quest for greatness would achieve all of our goals and aspirations if we weren’t so concerned with the reward… Let me explain: It is no secret that those who have the most success in life are those who actually enjoy what they are doing. They are focused on the work at hand and have fun while they get closer to their dream. They in essence are having their dinner (The main course) so that they can enjoy dessert after! Nothing can and nothing ever will replace hard work! if you want to be successful it is imperative that you put in the necessary work required! Stop looking for things to be easy and stop taking breaks when you haven’t even earned it yet! Work Hard, Play Harder!! But Not the other way around! Have Dinner Before Dessert! The reward is that much sweeter!!
-Ash’Cash
“Nothing in this world is handed to you. You have to go out and get it! Nobody said it would be easy but hard work always pays off.”
-Unknown
“Striving for success without hard work is like looking for fruit in places that you didn’t plant seeds! Useless!”
-Rev Run
“A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.”
-Colin Powell
“Don’t wish it were easier. Wish you were better.”
– Jim Rohn
“Focused, hard work is the real key to success. Keep your eyes on the goal, and just keep taking the next step towards completing it.”
– John Carmack
“When you live for a strong purpose, then hard work isn’t an option. Its a necessity.”
-Steve Pavlina
“Unless you are willing to drench yourself in your work beyond the capacity of the average man, you are just not cut out for positions at the top.”
-JC Penney
“Be strong! We are not here to play, to dream, to drift; We have hard work to do and loads to lift; Shun not the struggle — face it; ’tis God’s gift.”
