Slim Dunkin: Gucci Mane's Secret Weapon

Originally published February 2011.

“As a Emcee, I will be both respected and admired, leaving a legacy that will bring forth a Slim Dunkin” – Slim Dunkin

Slim Dunkin is more than just your average 20-year-old. The Atlanta native is one of the hotter Hip-Hop artists to emerge from the musical metropolis. The rapper is a member of the Brick Squad brand, currently home to the likes of heavyweights Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame. Despite his affiliation, Slim is able to stand alone. Equipped with a unique lyrical ability and style all his own, he hopes to claim his own place in Hip-Hop History. So, Atlanta is where AllHipHop found Slim Dunkin and the conversation went as follows:

AllHipHop.com: So what’s the one thing you want your music to do?

Slim: Make the people who come where I’m from and relate to me and know they got a voice out here speaking for them.

AllHipHop.com: When will you know you are where you want to be in music?

Slim: When my family straight.

AllHipHop.com: What’s the legacy you will create?

Slim: They say you’ll never know where your going unless you know where you’ve been so im just trying to help finish what Pac started

One things for sure, Slim definitely has the right ingredients for the makings of a hip hop superstar.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Kobe Bryant's Wife, Vanessa, Files For Divorce!

So Twitter and the Internet are all abuzz right now with the news that after 10-1/2 years of marriage, Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, has filed for divorce in Orange County Superior Court. The couple has seen their share of problems in the past. Remember this?:

A representative for the couple released a statement saying, “The Bryants have resolved all issues incident to their divorce privately with the assistance of counsel and a Judgment dissolving their marital status will be entered in 2012.”

They added, we “ask that in the interest of our young children and in light of the upcoming holiday season the public respect our privacy during this difficult time.”

What that statement doesn’t mention is that KOBE APPARENTLY HAS NO PRE-NUP! Hopefully Kobe wasn’t out freakin’ while he had all that time off during the lockout, ’cause while Vanessa might be sad, that could make her an even richer, single woman soon.

Update: Now we’re hearing rumblings that NBA Commissioner David Stern may be trying to halt the divorce petition, citing “basketball reasons.” Huh? Can he do that??

Snoop Sued by Lebanese Concert Promoter for Smoking in Beirut Club

(AllHipHop News) A Lebanese promoter is suing rapper Snoop Dogg for “tainting his reputation” as a result of smoking pot in his Beirut club in 2009.

According to reports, Lebanese authorites are conducting a criminal investigation into the matter, which took place after a 2009 performance at Forum de Beirut.

The promoter says that the act was filmed and subsequently appeared in Snoop’s “That’s Tha Homie” video, from his album Malice in Wonderland.

Kalaouz has threatened to take further legal action if he is not compensated $280,000, in addition to an agreement that Snoop perform two shows in the Middle East.

Performing for his Lebanese fans shouldn’t be a big issue for Snoop, who enjoyed his time spent in the country.

“Where do you go if you wanna hang with the Snoop? Beirut, Lebanon. Where do all the party people go to have a good time? Beirut, Lebanon,” Snoop rapped.

Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows & The Hip-Hop Chess Federation

Imagine the ability to calculate your opponent’s movement before he even blinks. Much like a chess match, it takes an exemplary mind to use deductive reasoning, and this, my Dear Watson, is what makes the methodical Mr. Holmes  a master. Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law respectively revive the roles of the super sluth Sherlock Holmes and his partner Dr. Watson in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, where the duo engage their fiercest nemisis moriarity in an intellectual game of chess as they seek to out wit each other.

According to Adisa Banjoko the founder of the Hip-Hop Chess Federation, “Chess enables you to see the potential good and bad in any situation in order to keep yourself safe.” This is a skill adopted by the program and used by Holmes throughout the movie. Banjoko was thrilled when Warner Bros. gave them free Sherlock Holmes chess boards, t-shirts, and tickets for his young people to see the movie and experience the tools they have been learning with the HHCF being demonstrated. “Kids who consistently practice chess,” explains Banjanko, “have higher math skills and reading comprehension, so I’m excited for the kids to get to see this film.” The movie is in theaters now.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Freddie Gibbs Gets Caught Traveling On A Plane With Weed!

…BUT HE WASN’T CHARGED OR ARRESTED!!!

Some major “wows” and “how’d you do thats” are in order for Mr. Freddie Gibbs, who recently traveled with two bags of weed with him on a flight. BUT! A) Why are you traveling on an airplane with weed? Isn’t that what you pay people for? and B) The fact that you somehow got to keep the weed is applause-worthy!!

TSA, FAIL on your part! We definitely don’t want to see another rapper catch a charge or get locked up, BUT come on! Did you really not think this was going to come back and bite you in the *ss?

Now, we’re not leaving it at that. Freddie, as much praise as we’re giving you right now…REALLY?!! You got away with a pretty big crime, and then you tweet about it??? In the words of Ed Lover, and more coincidentally, as a TSA employee wrote on your notice, “C’MON SON!”

Let’s hope that this warning is all Freddie has to deal with, but TSA, you’ve got a lot of explaining and firing to do!

Such memories and topics include touring and performing with Stevie Wonder in the early 1980s, his relationship with John Lennon, his participation and  association within the civil rights movement, and much more.

The 2011 Playback: AllHipHop.com’s Top 20 Dopest Music Videos of 2011 [#10 to #1]

[If you missed Part 1 of this feature, which ranked #20 to #11 of 2011’s Dopest Videos, click HERE]

AllHipHop.com presents the talented remaining 10 of our “Top 20 Dopest Music Videos of 2011,” which in this case, also happens to include some of the year’s hottest Hip-Hop songs. If art imitates reality, then these video picks are proof positive that Hip-Hop culture is as zany, rebellious, and creative as ever.

Kick back and enjoy part 2 of our list. Here are #10 to #1:

#10 Kanye West – “All of the Lights” ft. Kid Cudi and Rihanna

Dir. Hype Williams

Hype and Kanye’s homage to the 2009 film Enter the Void is preceded by a warning that the video may cause seizures. Now how can you NOT want to see what the video has the offer?! After a slow-building, artsy introduction with a cute but lonely little girl, the video hits full force with all of the fonts, colors, sounds, and imagery that are to be expected from Mr. West, and he certainly doesn’t disappoint here.

#9 A$AP Rocky – “Purple Swag”

Dir. Jason & A$AP Rocky

Many say this is the video/track that launched the career of Harlem’s “pretty mother f*cker.” Scratch that…this IS the video that launched Rocky in the industry-phere, thus allowing him to sign a rumored multi-million dollar recording contract. White girls lip-synching with grills on? Check! Houston vibe coming from a Harlem native? Check! Purple and lean influences throughout? Check! Swag? Check!

#8 Common – “Sweet”

Dir. Phil the God

The Chi-Town rapper’s prolific and thoughtful lyricism is showcased in this video that was shot on location Haiti. Not only does it show the devastation and destruction caused by the hurricane that ripped Haiti apart, it also showcases the will and determination of the Haitian people as they rebuild their homes and land. “Sweet” isn’t just a “dope video;” it’s one of the best videos in a while. Period.

#7 Lupe Fiasco – “The Show Goes On”

Dir. Hiro Murai

Ultimately, this video is a behind-the-scenes look at Lupe’s trek from backstage to hitting the actual stage for a performance. With it’s anthemic vibe and other-worldy nature, say what you will about Lasers, the album – Lupe never disappoints us visually.

#6 Chris Brown – “Look At Me Now” ft. Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes

Dir. Colin Tilley

One of the year’s biggest singles had to have an off-the-wall type of video. With graffiti, blacklights, some crazy dancing, a few in-video riots, and three of the music industry’s biggest names all on set, there was little to no way that this visual wasn’t going to turn out extremely “dope.” Which it did.

#5 Big Sean – “A$$ (Remix)” ft. Nicki Minaj

Dir. Mike Waxx & Mike Carson

Sure there’s a ton of things to enjoy and appreciate about this video, but let’s be real. All that needs to be said about the video for “A$$” is “Nicki Minaj.” That is all.

#4 The Roots – undun Short Film

Dir. Clifton Bell

The Roots did something different with their 11th studio offering – they made a concept album. The gritty, black and white “short” is a collection of the group’s previously released videos for four songs from undun, which tells the story of a man named Redford Stephens who chooses a life of crime. undun is the musical accompaniment to that story, and now, thanks to Clifton Bell, there’s a fully conceptual and visual accompaniment as well. Illadelph flavor (nearly) at its best.

#3 Beastie Boys – “Make Some Noise”

Dir. Adam Yauch

This is Fight For Your Right Revisited, starring Seth Rogen, Will Ferrell, and Jack Black AS Mike D, MCA, and Ad-Rock. What’s not to love here? Seriously, what’s not to love?? The Boys’ approach to making not just a music video but an actual short film was one of 2011’s greatest highlights, and it was funny as sh*t!

#2 The Throne – “Otis” ft. Otis Redding

Dir. Spike Jonze

Academy Award-nominated director, fireworks, American flags, Otis Redding, slow-motion, Kanye, Jigga, airplane hangars, and who can forget joyriding in a totally re-designed (destroyed!) Maybach. This is the American Dream personified, so you guys are definitely onto something with this whole “Throne” thing. All hail the kings!

#1 Tyler, the Creator – “Yonkers”

Dir. Wolf Haley

If you didn’t know the names Tyler, the Creator or Odd Future before this video dropped, you surely knew them after. “Yonkers” ultimately made OFWGKTA household names. The man delivers some of the year’s most outlandish and provocative lines, he also eats a cockroach, throws it up, does some crazy sh*t with his eyes, and then hangs himself – all within two actual shots, which is quite impressive. Oh, and for those that don’t know, Tyler directed the video himself, which really shouldn’t come as surprise. Top that.

Signs: Facebook Kid Killed Despite Uncle’s Intervention

SIGNS THE WORLD IS COMiNG TO AN END…this is a tragic one that definitely didn’t have to happen. Remember the video from back in January 2011 of the young boy whose uncle beat him down for perpetrating as a fake gangster on Facebook?

Well, it seems that the highly-publicized Tough Love from his uncle didn’t save him…16-year-old Michael Taylor, was recently shot and killed right outside his New Orleans home in a real-life thuggin’ situation. Here’s the story from gossiponthis.com:

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said Michael Taylor, 16, was found shot to death shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7 when deputies responded to a report of gunshots in the area. Taylor had been shot multiple times.

Sgt. Larry Dyess, JPSO spokesman, told the Times-Picayune that authorities had no suspect or motive in the incident.

Taylor’s mother, Kimberly Ward, told the newspaper that she kept strict tabs on her son, even making him stay on the sidewalk in eyesight of their home when he went outside. The night of the shooting, she said, Taylor received a text message from a friend at about 8 p.m. and went outside to chat.

“She said she called him back inside a few minutes later to find out what was going on, and he told her he was just talking and went back outside. A few minutes later, her daughter received a text message saying that Taylor had been shot, and then another saying he was dead,” the newspaper reported.

“Ward said she rushed from the house, driving around the neighborhood looking for her son, but didn’t find him until she was coming back to her apartment complex. That’s when she saw his body on the cold sidewalk, clad in the red sweatshirt she’d noticed when he left the house.

“I came home and saw my son on the ground,” Ward said.

In the YouTube video, posted in January, Taylor’s uncle ordered him to disavow any ties to gangs, announced that the family “don’t come from that sh–,” and then proceeded to take off his belt and spank Taylor in full view of the laptop camera.

Rappers Lil Wayne and Birdman spoofed the video, as did another video site called StuntKidzTV.

The original video sparked tons of reaction, from people who applauded the uncle’s actions, calling it an overdue return to old-school parenting and discipline, to those who speculated the public flogging might drive the teenager deeper into a gang’s circle because the youth had been humiliated.

Back in January, this seemed funny – at least funny enough for rappers to spoof the kid and his uncle. But, losing a life that could have been saved is never a joke. Let’s stop this senseless violence, people. That young boy had a promising life ahead of him, and apparently, an uncle who cared. More kids need Tough Love, and hopefully, before it’s too late.

Daily Word: Stop Apologizing!!!

Happy Friday, my fearless warriors!!

Welcome to your day!! The day you begin to stop allowing other people's insecurities to diminish who you really are! The day that you say "I am who I am, and I will be that for the world to see!" Today is the day that you stop apologizing for being great! Often times, because of our human need to be liked, we begin to conform in order to fit in, not realizing that we were born to stand out!

So what, if others are intimidated!! Who cares what they think about you!! All that matters is that you are staying true to yourself and living the best life that you can possibly live! When you dumb down your greatness in order for others to feel comfortable, you are in a way apologizing for being blessed with you abilities!! STOP!!! If you won the lottery, would you spend the money??? I bet you would!! Well, the universe has given you a different type of award, and even though it's not monetary, don't just let your winnings sit there.... Put them to good use!! You are the best of the best and no one can ever do it like you!! Take advantage of that and show your gratitude!!

The World is Yours, and NOTHING can stop you!! Believe in that fact and take what you deserve!!!!!!!!!!!!! -Ash'Cash

Mistah FAB: Oakland’s Own Talks Hip-Hop & Charity At Home

A few months ago, AllHipHop.com caught up with Mistah FAB for a detailed and in-depth look at the charity work that he’s doing to help his community out in Oakland, CA. The outspoken rapper/activist can be described as controversial for some of his opinions, and he is often criticized for them by fans on the Internet – yet he doesn’t let that criticism stop him from saying what’s on his mind.

With his new album I Found My Backpack Volume 2 now available on iTunes, the self-named Fabby Davis Jr. sat down for another conversation with AllHipHop.com to talk about the continuation of his charity work, the new album, and his thoughts on state of the music business.

AllHipHop.com: How did your Thanksgiving Turkey Drive go?

Mistah FAB: It went exceptionally well. It was good to see a lot of celebrities come out. A lot of people walked away with happy faces and full stomachs.

AllHipHop.com: How many turkeys were you able to give away?

Mistah FAB: Approximately 400 to 500. We also gave out 1,500 covers and coats to the homeless.

AllHipHop.com: That’s a wonderful thing. What do you have going on for Christmas?

Mistah FAB: We’re having a Christmas feeding, a tree voucher giveaway, and we’re looking to give out over 500 toys. I spoke to Davone Bess of the Miami Dolphins, who’s also from Oakland. I also spoke to Marshawn Lynch of the Seattle Seahawks, and C.C. Sabathia of the New York Yankees called me last night. They all want to play a major part in the Christmas project. With those guys contributing to it, Lord knows how many toys we’ll be able to give away.

Hopefully we can continue to inspire others to do things like this. Philanthropy is one of the best feelings in the world. I know what it’s like to have nothing and to be given something. To be able to give is one of the best feelings.

AllHipHop.com: Your new project is I Found My Backpack Volume 2. What’s the meaning behind that?

Mistah FAB: I started out as a backpack rapper. I was doing those Wake Up shows with Sway and King Tech – those dudes are underground messiahs and they helped me out a lot. I was becoming dope in the underground world, going from city to city battling and rapping in ciphers. A lot of people used to say that I was only a battle and freestyle rapper, and said that I couldn’t write songs.

Then the Hyphy movement developed in the Bay Area, and I helped to spawn it nationally. Then the criticism went from me not being able to write songs to just being able to make party songs. We did that so dope, it kind of brainwashed the fans and even media to where people forgot about my roots as a battle rapper of real Hip-Hop. I went back to my roots, and I found my backpack. I’ve dumb-downed for a lot of people to get their attention. Now that I have their attention, I’m going to show y’all what’s up.

AllHipHop.com: It must be frustrating being labeled as a certain kind of rapper instead of just being recognized as someone who is versatile.

Mistah FAB: Nobody cares if you can do all sorts of things in today’s Hip-Hop and that’s unfortunate. Certain people just want one thing. That’s the frustrating part of music. Nobody wants to hear a diverse artist. There’s no longer that versatility where you wonder what kind of an album that you’re going to hear from an artist. I bring that to the table. I’m able to do anything, and I guess that’s been coined as my gift and my curse.

AllHipHop.com: Do you think you’ll ever break out to a huge commercial success? Or is that even important to you?

Mistah FAB: It’s not important to me. What’s important to me is feeding my family, being able to do what I love, giving back to my community and growing as a man. Whether I become a mainstream success or not, is not my worry. I don’t owe anybody, all of my bills are paid, and I’ve got money in my pocket. I may not be the richest, but I know that I won’t be the brokest.

AllHipHop.com: I see you constantly updating your Twitter account, talking about the verses that you’ve sold to other independent artists.

Mistah FAB: I make myself available. People ask me why I do verses for $500, and I’m like, “Why not?” You might as well get yourself out to all of the different fan bases that you can. Any money off your talent is a blessing.

AllHipHop.com: That’s a true example of the independent grind.

Mistah FAB: I was raised by Too $hort and E-40. All I know is how to get up and get your own sh*t. F*ck waiting on a major label or a major co-sign.

AllHipHop.com: If a major label deal presented itself again, would you take it?

Mistah FAB: If it was right for me, I’d be stupid not to do it. I signed a deal years ago with Atlantic Records, and I signed a label deal. I wasn’t ready to be a CEO of my own label. I wasn’t ready for a structured label deal. I was like, “I’m signing a label deal, and y’all have an artist deal. I’m a Boss.” I had that deal, but mentally I wasn’t ready to run a label. That’s what the hold up with Atlantic was. Everybody kept asking me, ‘what’s up with Atlantic?’ It sucks that it happened that way, and that I had to learn years later that I signed a label deal without being ready to run a label. That was my fumbling and immaturity. If I could do it again, I would sign an artist deal. Initially you lose because they get more money but I would’ve gotten major exposure and I know the independent game like the back of my hand.

AllHipHop.com: What’s next for you after I Found My Backpack Volume 2?

Mistah FAB: After this album, I have another project called The H.O.P.E. It stands for How Our People Evolve. It’s geared more towards street music and what’s going on in our communities. It’s a more conscious project. What’s so crazy about me is that I have so many different personalities. I’m always shifting. With my versatility, I’m just going to start doing different conception projects.

Another project is The Love-life Alibi’s, all love songs for women. Everyday I’m in the studio. I go to sleep there and wake up and just continually work. I work on ghost-writing for other people or just for myself. I’m going to keep the audience guessing. Who knows what I’ll do next? I don’t even know. I’m going to go be whatever vibe I feel. I can be positive or negative. I don’t want to be boxed in. I’m a human! I will never be boxed in. I have flaws, errors, and faults. There is a good side and a bad side. I’m not going to cover it up.

Rappers are liars. Nobody wants to be honest anymore. Nobody wants to tell you how they really feel. Everybody plays politics, but I feel like once you are in a position, you make your own politics. Don’t hide behind some sh*t. Tell the truth! If that’s how you feel, then that’s how you feel. Nobody wants to be themselves anymore. Let me switch this up and ask you something. What’s Tupac’s mom’s name?

AllHipHop.com: Afeni.

Mistah FAB: What’s Eminem’s daughter’s name?

AllHipHop.com: Haley.

Mistah FAB: What’s Drake’s mom’s name?

AllHipHop.com: I have no idea.

Mistah FAB: What’s Wiz Khalifa’s daughter’s name?

AllHipHop.com: I don’t know.

Mistah FAB: See what I’m saying? The audience doesn’t know sh*t about their favorite artists anymore. Drake and Wiz are my friends. They are good people. It just seems like with music nowadays, you don’t know sh*t about them!

AllHipHop.com: I heard that you were out at the Occupy Oakland camp. Were you there when the batons started swinging?

Mistah FAB: Of course I was. Anything regarding my city, I’m out on the front lines. I don’t do it for attention. I do it because I really give a f*ck about what’s going on in my city. I have to live here. My daughter has to grow up here. Oakland is such a mess right now because all of the people that become successful here leave and never come back to show what success looks like. So what becomes successful in our mindstate is the people selling dope or these pimps that have these girls out here prostituting. You’ve got guys killing and robbing, because they get all of the money and nice things. Then you’ve got fake a** rappers lying about doing the stuff that they’ve never done.

AllHipHop.com: Drake and Lil Wayne had a video shoot out in the Bay. Did you hook up with them?

Mistah FAB: Drake called and had me and E-40 come out for the video. Drake is a hell of a guy. He’s one of those humans that you don’t meet often. He’s the same guy that I met years ago before So Far Gone came out.

AllHipHop.com: Did you two record anything together while he was out there?

Mistah FAB: No. Him and Weezy just came out and showed love and respect. It was dope to see two of the game’s most successful artists come to our area and reach out.

AllHipHop.com: Thank you for your time, Fab.

Mistah FAB: Yes, sir. Go get I Found My Backpack Volume 2 on iTunes. It features Jadakiss, Noreaga, Talib Kweli, Freeway, Prodigy from Mobb Deep, and Royce Da 5’9”. I’ve got New York and Philly on there. Big Pooh representing the Carolinas. The Midwest represented by Royce. The Bay Area represented by J-Stalin and San Quinn. Los Angeles represented by The Grouch. One of my mentors, Andre Nickatina, is on there, too.

AllHipHop.com: Nobody from the South?

Mistah FAB: You know what? I don’t have anybody from the South. The last one was Southern based, though, with Lil Boosie, 2 Chainz, and Yo Gotti. The next project is going to be dope. It’s going to have Wale, Kendrick Lamar, and a few other guest features.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Wiz Cheatin’ On Amber?

WIZ CHEATIN’ ON AMBER??

Uh Oh! There may be some real problems in paradise!

Wiz Khalifa was recently spotted with Draya Michele at a party. Draya – I think – has already stated that the pics are old, but what do you think?

What do you think?
