Hip-Hop Rumors: Shyne Wants Off Def Jam, Kat Stacks Plays Another Fool, Lupe To G.O.O.D. Music?

SHYNE WANTS OFF DEF JAM?

What the hell? I thought Shyne got like $5 milli to sign? Can’t be true if he is trying to get off? Looks like Nas done started something. Peep this:

“I’m definitely trying to get with Cash Money but the Def Jam thing is a question mark right now,” Shyne told SOHH. “I’ve been fixing to get up out of there for a while now because [Island Def Jam CEO] L.A. Reid don’t care about hip-hop. The people up there, they don’t know what they’re doing. When you don’t have a strong leader, where you gonna go? … They don’t care about hip-hop music. You give them a hip-hop record with an R&B singer, you “might” have a chance. They don’t care. You got The Roots, Ghostface, Nas, probably the best hip-hop roster you could imagine and they do nothing. L.A. Reid doesn’t want nothing to do with rappers — it’s nothing personal, I don’t have nothing personal with dude but he makes it known he doesn’t care about hip-hop. So I’m really interested in seeing who’s gonna replace him. Because I know he’s been replaced — so I wanna find out who’s gonna take his spot before I decide what I’m gonna do with Def Jam…The music that we make is responsible for pop, R&B, everything that’s jumping right now…

“They gotta care about [what we’ve done] the way Jimmy Iovine cares about that, the way Lyor Cohen cares about that,” Shyne added. “I’m definitely not gonna scrap everything I recorded. I put in so much, I’ve come so far. From the first record I did when I got out to the new records I’ve done while going to all these different countries, I ain’t scrapping nothing. I paid for that. I’m not signed to Def Jam anyway, I just need to find another distributor. I might just have Cash Money do everything. Who knows? That’s the beauty about being in the business for yourself. You can decide where you want to go and what you want to do.”

LUPE TO JOIN GOOD MUSIC?

I don’t know how true this is, but there is a rumor floating that Lupe Fiasco may be joining with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music. Now, that would be very interesting to me and you too, I be. Why? Because to me, it seems that Lupe has been running into too many industry issues. He needs that backing. Second, Lupe already has a posse of fans that are fanatical. This makes for a good combo when it comes to dropping an album! Lupe got his big break via Kanye so it only makes sense. Lets revisit that moment.

By the way, this is what Lupe said about his situation with Atlantic. “We just came to a reconciliation, saw both sides of the argument of what was going down, found a midway point that we can all agree on, and we’re rolling.”

HOW DUMB ARE RAPPERS AND SINGER?

I know people hate Kat Stacks, but I have to say this. The boy Jerimiah has reportedly been exposed trying to get some some ‘tang from Kat Stacks. WHY? I suspect record labels are using this hoe as a part of their marketing and promo plans. What do you think? Here is the fail.

He claims to have something on her too, but WHO CARES!

She’s a known h##### than half of the dumb rappers beat.

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Diddy and Cassie are rumored to be back together.

RIP shout out to Harve Pierre. His 11-year-old daughter died recently. I don’t know what happened. You should know Harve as one of Diddy’s executive Bad Boys that used to sing dope hooks.

Shout out to Ludacris who is engaged to a medical student.

I don’t know if we care about this, but Amber Rose and Dez (Mario’s new gal) are no longer best friends. Why? Seems that Amber told Mario he was being used by Dez to get fame. Makes sense…since Amber made a similar move with Yeezy. Right?

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY

If you are married at 21, why are you dating a 15 year old girl? That’s the first thing I asked. Then, it gets weirder. A 15-year-old girl convinced her her married 21-year-old boyfriend that it was a good idea to kill HER father. He did it too. I know this doesn’t matter, but I have to say that the girl is White and the man is Black. The girl convinced dude that if he killed her daddy, they could live together with her mother. UH. They are trying to get the girl to be charged as an adult in the case. Never trust a girl named Kaleigh (Lynn Fryer)! Jerry Jerone Chiles Jr. stabbed Lewis Keith Fryer, 50, to death. Jerry flipped fast and told police she put him up to it. SMH!!!! You big DUMMY!!!!!

EPIC WIN OF THE DAY

Finally, some “classy” people acting like common gutter trash. Some models bumped into each other and started to fight right there on the cat walk!

Who Killed The 2010 BET Hip-Hop Awards Cyphers?

The BET Hip-Hop Awards aired last night and the cyphers were the highlight for the die-hard Hip-Hop fan. In the past, people like Nicki Minaj, Joe Budden and Eminem were stand-outs for the lyrical roundtable. So…what about 2010? This year’s cypher included Ice Cube, Royce Da 5’9″, Diggy Simmons, Rev Run, Kanye West, Pusha T, and a bevy of more lyrical talents. But who BODIED IT this year? See them all below.

Who Are The Top Rappers Of The 21st Century?

One of the oldest discussions in Hip-Hop is quite simply “Who Is The Best?” BET has taken that discussion and put it in a new special with a twist. “Who Are The Top Rappers Of The 21st Century?” is a new program by the network that presents a roundtable of DJ’s, artists, tastemakers and Hip-Hop heads to craft the list. Nobody that released a solo album prior to 1999 was allowed as a contender in the construction of this list.

BET’s “Top 10 Rappers”

is the definitive hip-hop countdown by the ground-breaking network that

gave love to hip-hop before anyone else dared.

BET threw open nominations to BET digital followers, industry bloggers

and other social influencers (our “Grand Jury”). More than 25,000 votes

later, they returned a Top 15 list of rappers for consideration. Now,

our “Hip-Hop Supreme Court” is convening to vote on the final Top Ten,

based on a rapper’s: flow, lyrics, subject matter, cultural impact,

dough, and as needed in the arsenal of a 21st Century rapper –digital

skills (e.g., Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, their own website, etc.).

The Court represents all of the regions of the country, and consists of

nine select industry insiders – many of whom were raised on hip-hop: Jermaine Dupri (Producer – ATL); Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur (AllHipHop.com); Boy 1da (Producer);DJ Diamond Kuts (Power 99 FM – Philadelphia); DJ Greg Street (V103 – ATL); Tony Neal (CEO, Core DJs); DJ Timbuck2 (107.5 WGCI – Chicago); Chloe Hilliard (Managing Editor/Social Media Manager, Vibe Magazine – NYC); and DJ Vlad (VladTV.com – NYC).

In their technologically tricked-out courtroom, the Court is led by the Justice – Big Tigger,

who takes them through the debates and discussions about each of their

own Top 10 rankings. Live votes allow Court members to sway each others’

minds about their original Top 10 Lists with each countdown position!

Who will be the #1 Top Rapper of the 21st Century? Lil Wayne, Kanye

West, 50 Cent, Eminem, T.I. or an unexpected challenger on who takes the

crown with a surprise Court decision? On Friday, October 15, 2010 from

8-9 pm, BET’s “Top 10 Rappers of the 21st Century” delivers the final vote!!!

Killer Mike on Bishop Eddie Long’s Scandal: “Mistrust Religion But Always Trust God…”

(AllHipHop News) Atlanta’s Killer Mike aka Mike Bigga sees several lessons on religion and spiritual hypocrisy that Hip-Hop fans can take away from the recent scandal involving New Birth’s megachurch leader Bishop Eddie Long. The scandal surrounding Eddie Long’s alleged sexual misconduct with young men has subsided from national news, but the controversy is still a big topic of discussion in the city of Atlanta. Long is facing several lawsuits of sexual misconduct filed last month by four former members of his church. The young men, who all claim their relationships with Long happened while they were teenagers, allege the bishop abused his position and coerced them into sexual relationships by using Biblical scriptures and material gifts. To date, Long has steadfastly denied the accusations through his attorney and vowed to fight them in court.Killer Mike, who is politically active in the city through community work and his I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind album series, views the sex scandal as an example of how individuals can become blinded when their faith is placed in religious systems over God.”You already know me, mistrust religion but always trust God,” Killer Mike told AllHipHop.com. “Sheep get lead to slaughter and I’m a man. My grandfather raised a man.”The scandal has caused many, including some members of Long’s 25,000 member New Birth church, to question the bishop’s credibility as a man of God. Killer Mike sees that concern as something that was in doubt even before the allegations. He points to the title of “bishop” Long received from an offshoot Baptist movement, and not the Catholic or Episcopal groups which originated the distinction.”If you are a bishop, yet you are not  Episcopal or Catholic, why are you a f**king bishop?” Killer Mike questioned. “That’s not an attack on him, that’s a credible question. How can I trust what you’re saying, yet you don’t belong to the organization your title holds?”Mike also believes that vanity undermined Long’s claim of having a divine message. A guilty verdict, Mike argues, would simply be the final, damning revelation on a man he already sees as having a weak spiritual and moral foundation. “How can I trust you if you have on a toupee? Because you are not accepting what God has yielded for you, [and that’s] for you to be balder than a motherf**ker,” he explained. “Is keeping your hair not vanity? So I have fundamental questions. I don’t care that he allegedly likes boys. I care that he persecutes men that do. Because if God judges all sin the same, vanity is equal to being a homosexual. So your vanity is equal to sodomy in the eyes of God. So why should I respect you or anything you say?” If the charges against Long turn out to be true, Killer Mike says the New Birth preacher would merit the ancient punishment that symbolizes his Christian faith.”If you turn out to be a homosexual after persecuting your own, then you deserve to be crucified for that,” Mike concluded. Killer Mike’s full interview will be available later this week on AllHipHop.com.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Nelly Un-Clears Ashanti Rumors! Detox Update; Eminem & Interscope Leap In!

NELLY TALKS ASHANTI –FURTHER CONFUSES!

You know AllHipHop had to get Nelly’s take on Ashanti, especially after he said they were never together! The boy stuck to his guns…sorta. Check it out below. As told to Seandra Sims. The rest of this interview will be up later this week or something.

AllHipHop.com: OK, so the new Takeover Formula is to pair a hip-hop dude and an R&B chick. Jay and Bey, Swizz and Alicia…Nelly and Ashanti?

Nelly: I think right now we’re so focused on our careers, and what might work for some people may not work for the next people. Because a) you get people like ‘we are together, we’re not together.’ We never said any of that. We never said we were together, we never said we weren’t together. You know? We never said we were split up to get back together…we never said we back together to split up.

AllHipHop.com: That’s a mouthful. Are you together?Nelly: What is that? To say we’re together, or we aren’t together? My point is that we’re friends. Now don’t get it twisted – obviously we’ve taken a liking to each other. We wouldn’t be seen with each other as much as we have if we didn’t. But the thing is that we’re so focused on so many other goals that we’ve got to give each other that space and that passage, so that what makes them them, they can continuously do.

DETOX…THE PRESSURE IS ON…FROM INTERSCOPE!

Here is the latest on Detox! I am hearing that Dr. Dre is now catching some heat if you will from Interscope to get Detox finished and ready by year’s end. I don’t mean heat in a bad way…just a lil’ pressure. Its the 4th quarter and these companies all look to finish strong. I heard Eminem is totally in the studio with the good Doc to finish it up strong. Who better to help Dre come back than the comeback kid!?

Illseed,

MASTER P’S FAULT BABY CAN’T GET SOME MIAMI DOPHIN?

Peep what one of my readers sent over to me.

Miami resident here. Bang bang brickell gang lol. Just a little more info, it’s pretty funny that the dolphins owner said “Not considering or looking for any celebrity limited partners” seeing as how just last year J-Lo and Marc Anthony became minority-minority owners last year or so.

I think Master P’s managing of Ricky Williams soured everyone in the 305 on having N.O. rappers manage sports players and teams.

Best,

Bobby

LOOK WHAT THE KAT STACKS DRUG IN…JAZZY F!

It has been a good day and now that Jazzy F has showed up, even better. Below are the views and rumors of one Jazzy F.

Kanye West and Jay-Z will battle it out since they are both releasing albums on the same day. Jay-Z “The Hits Volume One” and Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy will hit stores November 22nd. Go pick up BOTH!

Well looks like we all know that Nicki Minaj will be on Rihanna’s Loud album. The track is titled “Raining Men”. Check below for what Rihanna had to say about the collabo.

“You know I worked with her before on Rated R and she was just writing me some really good ballads and I couldn’t wait to work with her again and finally have her on my record.  It’s a really fun song.  It’s called ‘Raining Men’. No, nothing like the original.  It’s quite up-tempo but kind of quirky and funny.”

Word is Alicia Keys did not release “Put In A Love Song” music video because she did not want to be upstaged by Beyonce. There was other reasons that was thrown out there but we all know Alicia did not want that heat Beyonce was gone bring. Seriously thought there really is no reason for the music video not to be out. #imjustsayin

Foxy Brown is mad at illseed but showing up late or not showing up at all is what Foxy Brown has become famous for since 2000. Foxy just get on your grind and stop living in the past when you was hot touring with the O-Jays. (Biggie, Jay-Z and Nas)

Meeno aka Mr Burns from Vacant Lot is suppose to be putting together a stop the violence track for the youth in Harlem with several other MCs.  You know Harlem kids love to stay fly and with the economy messed up they out there in Harlem shooting the streets up. I mean we have not had a Harlem day parade that did not turn into a world war in I don’t know when.

Anyway you already know how it goes down with Jazzy F and it don’t stop so FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER @itsJazzyFBaby

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

I heard Jay-Z refused to allow Def Jam Rap Star to use any of his music. Not exactly sure why though.

Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman are divorcing. I saw this coming down.

Nelly is rumored to be making a “Tip Drill” movie? Uhm…an epic fail in the making.

Chris Brown is reportedly planning to make the switch from R&B to Rock. Anything to be closer to Rihanna, I see.

Rumor has it Atlantic is not pleased at all with T.I. I concur that he is one of their most prized investments.

Ciara sex tape? I don’t believe it.

Actor Boris Kodjoe owes the IRS approximately $340,000 in back taxes. Ouch to me…to him…an inconvenience.

EASE UP, YEEZY!

Apparently, Kanye has made Kelly Rowland uncomfortable with his new lyrics. Peep what I saw on HelloBeautiful.com.

Kelly Rowland was slightly embarrassed when she discovered that Kanye’s most memorable lyric in his comeback song “Power” mentioned her.

In some behind the scenes footage of her Complex magazine photo shoot, Kelly shyly raps the lyric:

“Muthaf**** we rollin’, with some light-skinned girls and some Kelly Rowland’s.”

And continued, “My friends sometimes greet me like that now which is really weird. To hear him say that, I was kinda blown away.”

She sarcastically added, “Dang, no pressure, Kanye!”KELLY DON’T LIKE IT! BACK OFF YEEZY. …or I’m make you wear a mockneck shirt!

Just kidding.

YEEZY, WE LOVE YOU! They keep us talking, but if we stop talking about them then they should worry!

Will Smith Clashes With MIB3 Producers Over Script

(AllHipHop News) Will Smith’s upcoming flick Men In Black 3 has been halted, because the superstar actor is clashing with producers of the film about the script. According to The New York Post, the movie had been in pre-production around various locations in New York. But due to clashes between Smith and director Barry Sonnenfeld, shooting on Men in Black 3 has come to halt.Sony Pictures denied the allegations in The New York Post and stated the delays were because of recent changes to New York state movie incentives. “The only reason production will begin in mid-November as opposed to late October is to take advantage of recent changes affecting New York State film incentives,” a rep for Sony said in a statement. “Suggesting that a disagreement triggered the shift is complete fiction.” Will Smith and Barry Sonnenfeld have worked on several movies together, including the box office smash Men In Black, Men In Black 2, as well as Wild Wild West.Men in Black 3 also stars Tommy Lee Jones and will be released in 3-D.

Production on several films, which will be released by Grindstone Entertainment/Lionsgate, has already started. 50 Cent is attached to a new film titled Set Up, which starts shooting last month, in addition to Catch .44,  which stars Bruce Willis, Forest Whitaker and Malin Ackerman. The movie centers around a group of friends who get caught up in a diamond heist, which turns violent. “The thing about ’50 Cent’ is that, just like in his music career, he isn’t someone who sits around and waits for things to get done. He came to me and said, ‘How do we move quicker on projects?’ With this new fund, we are able to do that,” Randall Emmett told Variety. The hedge fund will help produce roughly five films a year, with a budget of about $20 million dollars.

Nigeria At 50: Inside Storm 360: West Africa’s Hottest Entertainment Company (Part 2)

Where else could one find 1) a star rapper who while at the top of his game is also earning his Master’s in Energy Studies 2) a rare talent who once lived in California but is now thousands of miles away – giving new meaning to Wu-Tang Clan’s concept of a ‘Slang Doc’ – popularizing new phrases by combining English with native tongues; and last but certainly not least, 3) a gifted female MC, poised to continue a global renaissance – balancing tradition with innovation.

If you guessed West Africa as region; Nigeria as country, and Storm 360 as entertainment company you would be correct.

And we didn’t even mention the super-producer, multi-talented vocalist, international DJ or the promoting genius within the circle.

This week, we place a spotlight on the talent that makes up the Storm roster, and some figures who play a behind-the-scenes role in cultivating it, and bringing it forth, for the world to see.

[Part 1 – focusing on the dynamic Storm executive team, and Africa’s emerging prominence in the world of Hip-Hop – is available at: https://allhiphop.com/stories/editorial/archive/2010/10/07/22425762.aspx]

Cedric Muhammad: You are making statement with your project ‘African-American.’ Your interview promoting the album is powerful (http://www.notjustok.com/2010/07/27/video-notjustok-interviews-saucekid-road-to-african-american-album/). What is the personal connection and journey for you in that phrase ‘African-American?’

Sauce Kid: African-american is my brand. I’m fusing Africa with America. I’m a product of both cultures. I came up on hip-hop while living in Inglewood, California. I was influenced by Fabolous, Eminem, Jadakiss, Styles P, Busta Rhymes to name a few. Then I came out to Naij [author’s note: ‘Naija’ is a phrase/nickname for Nigeria coined by the youth: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-11447252] to push Naija hipop and make it a force to reckon with. I used my Naija influence to coin popular slang/phrases (e.g Yebariba, Samboribobo, “its naija”, sinzu is sinzu, edondeymadt). I started with ‘Moneylong the Mixtape: Best Of Both Worlds!’ Now Its about ‘African American.’

Cedric Muhammad: As the First Lady Of Storm Records and being referred to as Africa’s Number One Female MC how do you balance expectations regarding women in terms of conservative and independent conduct and different notions of what beauty and fashion are? How do you view the global scene regarding the state of the Female MC? I have written about this being the time of ‘The Renaissance of The Female MC’ at length for AllHipHop.com:https://allhiphop.com/stories/editorial/archive/2010/05/11/22213013.aspx

Sasha: It hasn’t been that hard striking a balance because as an African woman our expectations are founded on culture mostly, but that said this is the 21st century and I believe although there are societal pressures to act or look a certain way, one’s individual opinions or self expression should not be compromised. In terms of style I choose what I’m comfortable in , and through my music I speak my mind fearlessly, being able to welcome change but not let go of one’s values. I think is the best way to strike the balance.

Cedric Muhammad: How do you view the global scene regarding the state of the Female MC?

Sasha: In recent years there has been a huge void where the Female Mc is concerned but with the growing success of Nicki Minaj in the States and all over I think it has started a ripple effect and once again women are stepping up to the plate. I look forward to a time where we can have just as many Female Mcs as we have male, who can successfully exist side by side. It doesn’t always have to be one by one or one at a time and I think with the talent springing up in Africa, in particular, that dream is not too far off!

Naeto C

Bio: http://www.storm360degrees.com/music_naeto.php

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/NaetoCee

Cedric Muhammad: You made quite a bit of noise with the news that while you have been one of the hottest rappers on the continent you’ve also been attending school pursuing a Master’s in Energy Studies at the University of Dundee [author’s note: see, “Dundee student’s double life as international rap star revealed,” http://news.stv.tv/scotland/181472-dundee-students-double-life-as-international-rap-star-revealed/].

What does this say about you as a person and in what ways does it help or hurt the marketing of you as an artist?

Naeto C: Besides music I always thought I would need to create more options for myself based on my own personal interests, just so I can secure a decent future. In addition to this, the entertainment industry in Africa is still growing and hasn’t reached a point where a career in music is effectively monetized. This means that artists like myself have to rely on shows to earn income and at some point, endorsements and maybe proper touring. To top it all up there is an absence of an active royalty collection system.

I decided to go back to school so I wouldn’t have to rely on being a regular musician to have a bright future financially, but most important, my decision has helped inspire my fans and others that know of my music to go get their education and provide options for themselves. I believe that in this day and time, the world has become very competitive towards attaining success. As a young African male, I think there are tons of challenges out there but with the proper education, one elevates himself beyond typical conversation.

In terms of marketing myself as an artist, what I did with going to school is basically highlighting a feature of my brand, which is simply being educated and academically more advanced than my contemporaries. Now I get a different reception whereever I go and respect comes along with that. If anything pursuing school has helped my career as it has positioned me differently, on another lane from my peers.

Cedric Muhammad: How does it feel to be the newcomer at Storm? Storm is positioning you with high expectations calling your album ‘a classic in the making,’ are you feeling any pressure?

YQ Jubril: I feel so glad and grateful to GOD. I know it is an open door to super stardom with Storm. I don’t feel any pressure ‘cause I know if I keep working hard, there will definitely be a great follow up to my Debut album and I won’t disappoint everyone that believes in my potential.

Thank you.

Cedric Muhammad: I see you’re a touring DJ and have also been a radio DJ, which gives you an important perspective. I just saw this hot video for the debut single for your mixtape, featuring Naeto C, MI and the late Da Grin, how do you feel about this major collaboration?

Int Dj Neptune: I thank God for his mercies, and of course Naeto C who showed me love from day one. The original track was done with MI and when I was building with Storm, Obi mentioned to me the importance of making major moments, so he said why not get 3 of the best Mi, Naeto C and my boy Da Grin? We recorded the track in late January, and Naeto and I took off for a show at Harvard University. Unfortunately by the time we returned to Nigeria, Da Grin had passed following complications from a car accident. I am just glad we had the record, to also push his brand and keep him alive. As a DJ I am on a mission to take my skills global and I keep putting out heavy mixtapes, I do the Naija thing, and also make international moves. Right now I am working on a best of both worlds mixtape with rappers from all over the world, so let your readers holla at me on twitter or facebook.

Tola Odunsi aka Bobby Boulders

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/people/Tola-Odunsi/597710069

Cedric Muhammad: Tola, you are director of talent and events for Storm 360. I also know you have clearly emerged as one of the top video directors in Africa. You went to the New York Film Academy after your degree and 10 years of working in the field. And I understand you have directed over 30 music videos, produced over 60, as well as having produced and managed countless events and talents under the Storm brand.

You are a gifted promoter and have been part of the evolution of the entertainment industry. Having accomplished so much, the question I have for you is simple – what is next?

Tola Odunsi aka Bobby Boulders: Thanks, in truth I never really do interviews and stuff but I have to chat with you, Cedric, and the mighty allhiphop.com. In the first instance thanks for showing us love and for being the first to point out what is going on out here.

For me this is not really a job it is what I was born to do and I do it with my Storm family. We don’t have bosses here in the traditional sense, all the talents, and the execs bond at the same level with no ego and I am proud to be associated with some of the most talented and positive young people in Africa.

I have been fortunate to do a lot of travel from South Africa, Brazil through the US as well and I know that our content is world class.

I cannot wait until BET, MTV and the rest in America begin to play our videos, and give us mainstream access. We might just cause an invasion (lol).

In the future – for me and Storm – is more work, we are trying to build brands and you can expect to always hear new projects and new approaches from Storm. We have always been pioneers and you know imitation is the best form of flattery so I just have to give a special shout out to all the other guys in the Naija entertainment industry especially those in the music industry who are making it happen, esp KK and D-one from Kenniss Music, Audu and Choc City, my man Segun and Banky W from EME, there are so many more but we are all one. When we really began this revolution back in ‘04 in South Africa, Obi told me come on board and lets make history, we will drive a Nigerian agenda and not just a Storm agenda. He has kept the faith and I am proud of the role Storm has played to get all the Nigerian superstars out there – from music, sports, fashion, and nollywood.

Cedric Muhammad: Jay you are reputed to be one of Africa’s top hitmakers and you have an almost familial relationship with P-Square the biggest group on the continent. Apart from your own solo career and the hits you have crafted for them and many others, I’ve also learned of your historic and progressive collaboration with another one of Africa’s true superstars, Fally Ipupa. As one who has changed the soundscape of African Music how do you expect to expand your platform with this new partnership with the Storm family?

Jay Martins: Thanks for the question, in the first instance I am all about music, as a producer, songwriter, singer and performer. I have my own imprint but I partnered with Storm to reach new markets and new audiences. Obi keeps saying that some of the biggest secrets here are producers and I am proud to belong to this generation of talented Nigerian producers, including the P-square family, Don Jazzy, Cobhams, Dokta Frabz and Tee-y-mix. I respect everyone but these are the ones who stand out for me. For me music is universal and with songs like ‘E No Easy’ with P-Square we have proven already that we can impact the world. I am looking forward to infecting the world for many years with the Storm Family and I want to say to your audience – check for the Africans, we are coming!

Cedric Muhammad: You have a unique voice with incredible range and I hear you are one of the few really speaking to the people and what they are going through on the streets. How did this come about and what are your aspirations?

Gt: I am working on new tracks for a re-release of my debut album which is called the truth. I view myself like a reporter and I simply tell the real stories of the streets of Lagos and Naija, all I can say is keep watching out for GT and expect great music, great songs and great melodies.

Dokta Frabz

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/people/Dokta-Frabz/604384991

Cedric Muhammad: Multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer, and hitmaker that you are, Frabz, Obi tells me you are also the musical director on Glo Naija Sings and also an official in-house producer for Storm. How do you view music and what is your approach to making it?

Dokta Frabz: I am just trying to do the best I can, spread the gospel of quality music, and share that with the world. I have been blessed to make hit records for a diverse range of artists and I am comfortable in all genres. I work with real instruments as well as all the digital programs too. Watch out for me in 2011 when we hope to share my debut album. You will also be hearing more of my work with Storm artists and others I have been developing.

Tosin Martins

Bio: http://storm360degrees.com/music_tosin_martins.php

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/people/Tosin-Martins/582308181

Cedric Muhammad: You have been described as a gospel and soul star, in a class of your own – with a voice that makes timeless and classic music. You are also the permanent judge on Glo Naija Sings which is one of the largest music reality shows in Africa – conceived and produced by Storm 360.

So, you are a solo artist with a huge fan base with a new emerging audience, beginning to follow you through the show.

Tosin, how do you feel about being on the show and with a double album currently available on itunes what should we expect from you going forward?

Tosin Martins: Thanks man. Well, its a challenge, our people are emotional so everyone wants me to be nice on the show but that’s not my job. The winner is getting 100k dollars so its tough and they must be excellent – not just good. Also it is important for people to understand that music is an occupation not simply a vocation, I am a qualified barrister but I chose to practise music. I am looking forward to a wider audience embracing my music which is a fusion of gospel, R and B, jazz funk, and juju, highlife, and classic African sounds and percussion. I consider myself to be a true musician and my voice is my primary instrument so all I want to do is share my gift with the world and hopefully the music will do the rest.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Baby Caught Lying About NFL Ownership?

This writer Armando Salguero (click here for full post) went in on Birdman and for good reason. He did his research on Baby and say Baby lied about being an owner of the Miami Dolphins. Maybe Baby found another way in his ownership like the oil game?Ross: Birdman not bird of a feather

Why do people lie?

I mean, don’t they understand eventually the truth comes out, especially if the lie is national news?

In the previous post I shared with you that rapper and music executive Bryan Williams, who goes by the handle Birdman, said on a national radio show that he was awaiting NFL approval to become a minority owner of the Miami Dolphins.

Not to take Birdman’s word, with all due respect, I called the NFL to ask what the deal is with Birdman. A spokesman told me the league has no knowledge of any approval process for Birdman.

And there’s a good reason for that. Birdman apparently isn’t at all involved in the very approval process he said he was, according to Dolphins owner Stephen Ross.

“I have NEVER spoken to him or any representative,” Ross said in a statement released by the team. “Not considering or looking for any celebrity limited partners.”

That is interesting on multiple levels. First, it shoots Birdman out of the sky.

Secondly, it means Ross is taking a break from the search for more celebs to fill his suites and walk the orange carpet at Sun Life Stadium.

Finally, a note to Birdman: Thanks for the wild goose chase.

DIPSET IN CONN!?

I don’t know what to say. I will start by saying, I am glad that Dipset is back. The Hip-Hop Crew – REAL CREWS – is a fleeting thing these days. So, it is good to see this. On to the rumor! I am hearing that Jim Jones had some leftover beef from back in the day in Connecticut. I heard Jimmy had a nice show in New London, Conn and it came off without a hitch. But, some goons hit me up and wanted me to say its ain’t sweet! I don’t know why these guys hit me up, but they did. They rattled off a lot of other cites that it wasn’t sweet. At first, I thought this was a Dipset thing, but it doesn’t seem to be that. Its seems like Jimmy is the actual outlaw.

Glad to have you back Dipz!

LAPD KILLS UNARMED MAN?

Check out what I got from Jubilee Shine. SMH at the LAPD. Some things never change.

1pm, Tuesday, in Imperial Courts projects in Watts, the Coalition for Community Control Over the Police will hold a press conference with the family of James Davis III, who was shot in the back and killed Thursday, while unarmed, by LAPD officer Chavez.

Mashia Lewis, mother of Davis, will present witnesses and photos showing that Davis was shot in the back with his hands in the air, with no weapon in his possession, contradicting the official police cover story that he “pointed a gun” at them.

Mrs. Lewis will then accompany the Southern California Immigration Coalition in demanding accountability from LAPD Chief Beck at his downtown headquarters.  The SCIC will be demanding an update on the status of the “transparent” investigation promised by Beck following the murder of unarmed Guatemalan Manuel Jaminez Xum.

The Coalition for Community Control Over the Police calls for an all-elected, all-civilian, police control board with full authority over the police in all aspects at all levels as the only solution to the rampant epidemic of police terrorism in our community.

Ice Cube Breaks Down Whole Catalogue

When you’re one of the creators of gangsta rap, there’s always a story to tell. Nearly 25 years into his career, Ice Cube is feeling cocky. And why not? His contributions to hip-hop are mammoth. From his groundbreaking days as a founding member of “the world’s most dangerous group” N.W.A. to his fire-and-brimstone politically-charged solo statements, Cube is indespensible when dissecting the evolution of rap. Yes, there are critics who will point out that the influential visionary lost his sneering bite during his impressive turn as a major Hollywood player, starring, directing and producing in films like Friday, The Players Club, Are We There Yet?, Barbershop and Lottery Ticket. But the grizzled West Coast vet is not about to put down the mic anytime soon. With a new album, I Am The West, in stores, a defiant Cube breaks down his indelible musical career one song and album at a time. He’s not going anywhere, folks.

“My Posse” (1987)—C.I.A.

“I first met Dr. Dre in 1983 going into ’84. He was the most famous person I knew at that time [laughs]. He was in the World Class Wreckin’ Cru who just dropped a record called “Surgery.” Dre was the only person I knew who actually released an album, so I was excited to meet him. When he heard me flow, he took me under his wing. He would be at the house making records and I would help him write whatever I could to just get in where I fit in. Before N.W.A., we were in a group called C.I.A. We were on Epic Records and we had a song called “She’s A S###,” which Dre used the Tears For Fears track “Shout.” It was a cool little song, but it wasn’t particularly hot, so we ended getting dropped from the label. Then we got on Crew Cut Records and changed our name to C.I.A., which stood for Criminals In Action. But the label didn’t want us having the word ‘criminals’ on our record [laughs]. So they made us change it to Crew In Action and needless to say we were mad about that s###!’

That’s when we came out with “My Posse.” We recorded that record six or seven days after the Beastie Boys’ License To Ill came out. And Dre was like, ‘Y’all gotta rap like these dudes…real loud and screaming and s###.’ We thought, ‘Man, this style is kind of crazy.’ Dre had us on “My Posse” f###### screaming our heads off like we were Adrock because that was the new sound; the new style. We were a little bit out of character on that song [laughs].”

N.W.A. and the Posse (1987)

“Before we even started this album, Eazy-E commissioned the song “Boyz-n-the-Hood” from me. Dre and me were doing these swap meet mixtapes clowning on those songs and talking about the s### that was happening in the neighborhood. We knew it wasn’t going to be a record that would get played on the radio, so we were going all out. But Eazy kept saying, ‘That’s exactly the style that I want! That’s what I want you to write for my group.’ That’s when I wrote “Boyz-n-the-Hood.” I knew the song was ill, but it was no iller than Ice T’s “6 In The Mornin’.” I saw the s### that was going on in the streets. It was an underground hardcore record and I wanted it to be visual. That was N.W.A.’s style…to be graphic with it.”

Straight Outta Compton (1988)—N.W.A.

“I’m not going to take all the credit for the gangsta style of Straight Outta Compton. Everybody contributed something. But there are certain moments that stand out. A song like “F### The Police” took N.W.A. from just being a hardcore group from L.A. to the world’s most dangerous group. That one song alone was just as political as anything that had come out before it. I don’t know if a song has ever peaked that kind of political vibe all over the world. It hit a chord with people globally who were sick of [unjust] authority. To me, that song is the essence of what the group had become.

To tell you truth, I wasn’t shook when the F.B.I. sent us that letter [condemning us for “F### The Police”]. I was naïve. Being that young, I didn’t really care about the F.B.I. [laughs]. They didn’t mean as much to me as the LAPD. I actually saw the cops in L.A. f### with people for no reason. They would f### with me and the homies for just doing nothing; We were used to putting our hands on the hood of a cop car and all that b#######. That same year Eazy released Eazy-Duz-It. With Eazy’s record, a lot of people pitched in—the D.O.C., MC Ren, and myself. We all put a lot of effort to get that record done, but at the end of the day writers were not considered producers. No matter what you contributed to the record, style wise, you were not considered a producer unless you did beats. And to me, that was b#######.

That’s when I started to have issues with the way business was being done. I was the one that told Dr. Dre to go ‘Gangsta, gangsta, that’s what they yelling, it’s not about a salary, it’s all about reality.’ Me bringing those records to the studio and telling Dre to use them is producing just as much as Yela rewinding the tape and making sure the drum machine is working. That was my main problem. I thought we should all get paid as producers. And Eazy didn’t see it that way.”

AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted (1990)—Ice Cube

“When I left N.W.A., I got the chance to rap on the Bomb Squad’s beats. I always loved their work on those Public Enemy records. On AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted I thought I was getting the chance to do something that not too many people had done: bridge the gap between the East and West with just one record. These m############ were mad scientist when it came to sampling and layering beats. I was on cloud nine. You had the Eric Sadler on the bottom beats; Chuck D on the scratching and anything that you heard flying in and out; and Hank and Keith Shocklee were just adding and stacking sounds. I knew I was going to have a great record, despite all the s### that the guys from N.W.A. were talking about how my album was going to be trash. All I heard was, ‘You going out to New York to work on your record? That’s dumb!’ All that s### they hit me with, I was like, ‘Whatever…watch this.’ Me and Sir Jinx put together our preliminary plan and had some songs we took with us to New York. Jinx produced “Once Upon A Time In The Projects,” “You Can’t Fade Me,” and helped put together those skits. I call Jinx my crazy producer [laughs]. He’s a mad scientist his damn self.

I think “The N#### Ya Love to Hate” was the perfect opening song. But originally it caused a huge argument in the studio. The crew thought that I was dissing myself on that track. No rapper had ever told the listener to literally tell them, ‘F### you.’ But I explained to them that because the song is called “The N#### Ya Love to Hate” that means it was about the hate I was receiving because of the dope s### I  was giving to the [masses]. It was back and forth until I let the guys feel what I was trying to do—they just bit into it totally. That’s how we knew we were making a record that was beyond the boundaries of anything that was done.

And then you have a song like “Endangered Species,” which was extremely powerful. For one thing, Chuck is rhyming on the track with me, which was just incredible. To me it’s a straight Public Enemy beat. We had some crazy ass distortion going through that song. It actually pierces your ears. And the end of the song is equally powerful. The whole chase down by the police dogs. Every black person that hears that can feel it in their chromosomes like it was happening to them. It was just a great record.”CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL CLIP!

THE DAILY WORD

If you have read me in the past, I’ve repeated bashed Chris Columbus year in, year out. This time, I had to take damn off! He’s still a bum though. Here are a few rumors to hold you down until the morning.

T.I. TO DO 6 MONTHS OR MORE?

T.I. is going back to jail. This much we already know. There was no way to get out of that. Now,  the question is how long. There are rumors that T.I. has accepted a 6-month bid for violating his parole or probation…whatever. Tip’s lawyers were hoping for a shorter term, like 5-month while prosecutors were looking at something like 14 months. I guess 6 isnt a bad settlement.. Also, rumor has it, T.I. taking the rap[ will free Tiny up to be with the kids.

 WALE THE LIGHTBULB?

Waka Flocka compared Wale to a lightbulb in a recent interview with MTV.  I don’t know  what to make of his other than to say…

“Wale like a light. You know how you screw a light bulb in…but you don’t twist it all the way, so it keep going in and out, that’s Wale. Now when you twist Wale tight, [he’s] gon’ become bright. That man can rap real good but nobody give him an opportunity.”

What do  you think? I think that statement is almost worthy of a “pause.”
