Lil Scrappy: Born Ready

Just a little over five years into his career, Atlanta’s Lil

Scrappy has experienced much success in Hip-Hop. The young MC came into the

game with a co-sign from super-producer Lil Jon, reaching gold success on the Kings of Crunk

compilation. From there, Scrappy partnered with 50 Cent to drop his Top 20,

2006 debut Bred 2 Die, Born 2 Live.

Dissatisfied with the lack of support from major label

Warner Bros, Scrappy secured his release and founded his very own label G’$ Up

Records. Early plans were delayed when the rapper was stabbed in a July 2008

domestic dispute involving his sister’s boyfriend, and subsequently arrested

for felony possession of marijuana, battery of an officer, and possession of a

firearm/knife. Now back on track and living up to the perseverance his name

implies, Lil Scrappy outlines plans for an ambitious 2009, starting with the

February 24 release of Silence and

Secrecy (Black Rag Gang).

AllHipHop.com:

It’s been two years since your last project, which is a lifetime in Hip-Hop.

What has been going on with you professionally and personally in preparation

for the new LP this month?

Scrappy: Generally

just getting my mind right. I [had] to get off the old label I was on, Warner

Bros. I was making hits but they weren’t putting nothing

out. If your record label is not behind it, then no one else will [be]. So why

am I on a record label? I can be f**ked up by myself. I was kinda

cool with the label dudes [and] we reached an agreement. [They told me] I don’t

know want to do with you, but I’m sure there’s someone out there who can handle

just straight up Hip-Hop. I come as I am, that’s how I market myself. I’m a

real emotional type of rapper. I make real music. After that all I had to work

was work on my music, my group, and get Diamond from Crime Mob together. She

got an album coming [too].

Money In The Bank – Lil Scrappy

AllHipHop.com:

Mentioning the major label experience, you were blessed in your first two albums

to work with an all-star cast that a lot of artists don’t see over their whole

career. How have those collaborations and close relationships with people like

50 Cent and Lil Jon helped you approach the CEO position you now hold?

Scrappy: Jon and

50 have good work ethics. When I first came in the game I was already a

workaholic.  And being around Jon

being that he’s a perfectionist it makes you step up the product. Jon always

said, “After its out, its out.” I’ve brought Jon 60 songs before, and when he

heard “No Problems” he said, “That’s the one.” He’s very confident.

With 50, [his advice] would be I can’t tell you what to say,

but keep in mind some of it has to be radio friendly. He showed me that don’t

make the process too hard. It’s our life and what we do. He’s another

workaholic to make you be like, Damn! He showed me how

to be a businessman.

 Lil Scrappy “No Problems” Video

AllHipHop.com:

You’ve already revealed two members on your crew in Young Vet and Pooh Baby.

How many people are in the crew and a part of your new label G’$ Up?

Scrappy: It’s

just a mixture. Everybody already knows about Atlanta. You got Pooh Baby from

the Eastside and Decatur. Young Vet holding down Marietta. He brings a new

whole swag to the game. And with Scrappy I’m going to give you everything. We

got something for the D-boys, players, b***hes, for

everybody.

AllHipHop.com:

Who are some of the producers on the new album?

Scrappy: Off the

top Drumma Boy (“Crank It Up,” “Yummy Yum”), C Gutta (“Damn”), Tillie (“Cell Phone Watch,” “Gas”) and Young

Juve (“Grustle Or Not”).

It’s a lot of people that normally don’t get a lot of recognition but put out

good work.

AllHipHop.com: As

you know the Atlanta Hip-Hop scene is ever evolving with new faces and trends.

This record of course has a strong Atlanta base, but how do you expect it to

perform nationally?

Scrappy: I’ve

never made records just for Atlanta. Everyone in Atlanta f**ks with each other which makes the sound national. I

didn’t just grow up on OutKast, but Biggie, Tupac, and UGK. But [even] with my South swag I still speak

from a universal tip that everyone can understand.

Lil Scrappy “Head Bussa” Video

AllHipHop.com:

You’re five years into your career, which is a milestone that a lot of Hip-Hop

artists do not reach. What do you attribute your success and perseverance to?

Scrappy: I just

thank God, man, first and foremost. I had stopped for a little bit back in the

day because I had got all my teeth knocked out my mouth [Editors Note: In a 2006 crowd moshing

incident]. And 50 came back in and saved me from just being dropped to the

bottom of the crowd. I thank God for that opportunity to recreate and start

over. That’s the best thing about Hip-Hop; you can recreate if you’re creative

enough. People love new creations despite what they say. It feels good and sounds

good. That’s what I have to play into. I have to make sure whatever the next

man is doing, I’m not doing.

AllHipHop.com:

Last summer you had the legal situation with the stabbing, but to your credit

you didn’t get on YouTube and exploit it through the media like a lot rappers

do. How important is it for you to keep a definitive line between your personal

life and professional persona?

Scrappy: You gotta think man, people cling to

the movie of their life, and I just don’t do that. I like to come home, look at

TV…just do stuff that regular folks do. You’re trying to pay your bills? S**t

I’m trying to pay mine, you feel me? When I go out I don’t make a big scene. If

I go to buy something, it’s just me, not 50 dudes. I remember not having

things. I remember people saying, “Who is Lil Scrappy?,” when I used to perform before I became known. I still

have a real life, and material things aren’t going to go with me when I die.

I’m about my Hip-Hop and moving my career in the right direction. People do

hate when they don’t see you for awhile. They assume you’re not going anywhere.

But those people don’t know the business, and every two or three years I’m gonna keep coming. And I’m moving

into movies as well.

Diamond & Lil Scrappy “Wishe Washe” Video

AllHipHop.com:

Much has been said about the mainstream direction of Hip-Hop. What do you like

about today’s sound and where do you see room for improvement?

Scrappy: I like

it, it’s creative but it has no substance. Lil Wayne, T.I., Game, 50, Kanye’s albums had substance. But everything else has

something missing. It’s like we’re getting the pizza without tomato sauce. The

music we make down here has always been about partying, even back with OutKast. But we would still talk about real ass s**t with

it, like Jeezy’s “Put On.” And you got New York with

the party thing and their street thing. Everyone is waiting to see what the

next style is. Somebody just has to come in and take it over and that’s gonna be me this year. There’s no one to blame this time,

it’s just me. I’m gonna go hard. After the G’$ Up

album I have my own album dropping, and then Diamond’s (from Crime Mob) album

is dropping. And I have a reality show coming out this year for BET.

AllHipHop.com:

You mentioned your own solo album, when is that tentatively scheduled to drop?

Scrappy:

Summertime this year. After that next album drop you’re gonna be like, “Well Scrappy did say he was gonna do it [big]” [laughs]. I’m definitely coming strong

this year.

AllHipHop.com: As

a CEO, how hard is it to put aside friendships and personal relationships with

your artists to make sure business is handled accordingly?

Scrappy: I can

tell you I don’t have too many friends in the rap game. One is Wayne. I told

him to get on something and he just jumped on it; did it and sent it back to

me. I can always call 50, Yayo because he’s crazy and

will do anything, Banks, 40 Glocc, and all kind of

people. I can hit up Gucci Mane, Big Kuntry, or T.I.

to get on something. Even Shawty Lo! I f**ks with everybody. That’s a

good business mindset. Who you know gets you on, [but] what you know keeps you

on. Like Jon, he’s never done an album by himself. He’s always had other

artists. I had fun making records with 3-6 Mafia’s crazy a####,

Yung Joc, Jazze Pha, and Yo Gotti.

Even though some of them charged me a helluva lot, I

got introduced to their fanbase and vice versa.

Lil Scrappy & G$’s “Cell Phone Watch” Video

AllHipHop.com:

Atlanta has been at the forefront of mainstream Hip-Hop for the last couple

years. Do you see the city starting any new trends in 2009?

Scrappy: We wanna hear something new every

day. We woke up and heard the old s**t yesterday. The underground always

switches over and becomes the bomb. Before the underground was that weak s**t,

now it’s that superstar s**t. You got superstars making underground music.

Gucci Mane is underground, so is Jeezy and Lil

Scrappy. S**t flips. I remember we couldn’t even get played. Next thing you

know they caught on. So as the music develops we’ll keep killing the game.

Atlanta is now fighting for the lyrical battle now. They

still think down South is not lyrical even though we’ve showed it. OutKast showed it back in the day, and even now in Wayne

and T.I. We’re versatile, so we’re not going to do that s**t every song.

Everyone has their different flavor of music. Hip-Hop will never just be one

thing anymore. We’ve went through that. MC Hammer came in and took it over. Ice

Cube knocked that out with the gangsta era. Who is

coming next? We haven’t found the person that has that tomato sauce to put back

on the pizza. All we got now is the toppings.

Chris Brown Releases Statement, Is “Saddened”

Chris Brown has issued a statement in response to the dramatic rollout of events that started with alleged attack of one-tiime girlfriend Rihanna. “Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired. I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person,” the statement states. Brown also took time to dunk and diffuse much of the speculation that his occurred in the media and the blogs. “Much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and/or reported in the media is wrong. While I would like to be able to talk about this more, until the legal issues are resolved, this is all I can say except that I have not written any messages or made any posts to Facebook, on blogs or any place else. Those posts or writings under my name are frauds.” The statement never refers to Rihanna directly. Brown’s father recently stated that his son was concerned for Rihanna’s well-being. Clinton Brown, his father, said, “He’s reflecting on this situation. He’s very remorseful. He’s very concerned about the situation he wants to make sure that (Rihanna is) okay.” The younger Brown was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats and released on $50,000 bail. He is expected to appear in court on March 5.

Wyclef Opening School In Haiti

Rapper/producer Wyclef Jean is continuing efforts to give back to his native Haiti with plans to build a new school.

The Yéle Center is among a string of projects the entertainer is involved in that pave the way for a better life for Haitian youth.

The construction of the center represents another chapter in Jean’s connection to Haiti.

Last year, Yéle Haiti partnered with the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP) and the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) in May to launch Together for Haiti, an effort designed to respond to Haiti’s food crisis by providing jobs and food.

Jean’s humanitarian efforts continued in September with the creation of the Haiti Storm Relief Fund.

The venture, which was launched in response to severe storms that plagued Haiti at thetime, supplies food, water, purification tablets, tents, blankets, medical supplies and hygiene kits to storm victims.

Jean, who serves as a Goodwill ambassador to the country, hopes to start raising money for the Yéle Center in six months.

KID CUDI PROBABLY WASN’T ARRESTED

He might have called a woman from Reebok a “b-word” and tried to wear Jordans to a Reebok event, but he doesn’t have a record! That’s right. I am told that Kid Cudi was indeed tasered and cuffed up, but he was not actually arrested with any crimes. This is what popped off over the weekend.

Rapper Kid Cudi has been involved in an altercation that has resulted in the Cleveland native being tasered and apprehended by authorities, according to multiple sources.

Detail are sketchy, but the rapper apparently was involved in a fight or altercation while at the Reebok party in Phoenix, Arizona. Much of the music industry is in the city celebrating the NBA’s popular All-Star weekend.

Eyewitnesses stated that Kid Cudi physically and verbally confronted a pair of Reebok employees. The artist was booked by the apparel company to perform at the venue.

Sources said that Cudi wanted to wear Jordan sneakers on stage, a move that did not agree with the people of Reebok.

Authorities intervened after the confrontation escalated and Cudi was tasered, a move to control his behavior.

The rapper was presumed arrested by police, but actual charges have not been revealed.

A representative for Kid Cudi was not available at press time.

Allen Iverson, a Reebok endorsed athlete, attended the party.

STEVE-O TO DISS K-FED!?!

I haven’t heard the name Steve-O in a long time. What have I heard? I heard that Steve-O doesn’t appreciate that K-Fed might be signing to Bone Thugs N Harmony. I heard that Stevie Boy has already recorded a diss song to K-Fed and is working on a remix of the song that will defecate on K-Fed’s life. Steve-O will reportedly take shots at both K-Fed AND Bone on the remix! I don’t know that he should do that! Like I said in my original rumor that has gone on to get picked up by tmz, Krayzie Bone might be looking to do bizness. He said to them, “We will listen to his music and if it’s jumpin’ off … if we can do business … Bone is all about doin’ business. We feel like we can work with anybody and have a platinum hit … our fan base are usually the ones who respect a man who has gone through a lot of s**t.” So, now if they DO BUSINESS, Steve O is going to give them the biz! Bone and K-Fed have been seen in the streets. What next? Britney and Rah Digga doing an album together?

THE RETURN OF THE D.O.C.

Oh BOY! Here is some good news for the old heads! The legendary D.O.C. is coming back! The Dr. Dre protégé, and world renowned lyricist is reportedly coming back, thanks to my people at Voice Through Hot Vessels. A little while ago, The D.O.C. stated that he planned on having other rapper rap his lyrics on his last album, but he has scrapped that idea. Thanks to modern science, The D.O.C. is making a return to the mic with his actual voice in check. No, not the raspy one that we all love as well, but the one the fans of real Hip-Hop remember. I am hearing that after Detox is finished, The D.O.C. is having surgery done to get his voice back and come back for one more album which we have all have wanted for the longest time. With that, I have to say…DRE FINISH THE ALBUM! If not for yourself, for the D.O.C. and all his fans! Here is a quick dose of the Doc for you all!

CHARLES HAMILTON TALKS ABOUT RIHANNA AKA HIS NOT-SO-SECRET CRUSH

ILLSEED’S QUICKIES

Help me understand. Has anybody heard of Jim Jones paying $10 million to get out of his contract with Cam’ron?

More good news, old heads! Chubb Rock has finished his new album!

If you are a female and wear spandex, send me a picture of you in them. I promise this is 100% business. Understand that sending the picture, it MAY published on AllHipHop.com. Also, understand that everybody won’t make it. Thanks. Send to allhiphoprumors@gmail.com.

Check out my new hoodie…Chris Brown fans might not like it though. Peep it!

Check out Bad Boy artist Janelle Monae wild out a few weeks ago. She climbs up a tree after jumping in a pool. Nuff said.

Shout out PoppJam at Michigan State University! Lupe Fiasco and Asher Roth performed at the school and I heard Asher had a hot afterparty! I heard it was so hot, the cops came and busted it up!

Amy Winehouse reportedly passed out over the weekend. Damn those ROCKS!

RANDOM QUOTES

Will Smith and Jada want to help Chris and RiRi (even though it seems like that time has passed.)

“Jada and I reached out to both of them. If it’s help they need, then let’s get it right. This is a time where they need to be left alone and if they have things they need to work out, work it out. People should take a minute before they jump on it and judge. We don’t know nothing. If there are mistakes people make, then they should be willing to live up to the mistakes and do whatever penance they need to do. I don’t think it’s up to us, specifically the media, with such a fast hand to try to chop someone’s head off.”

I think Jada is secretly thinking something else:

“Violence towards women of any kind is completely unacceptable.” (What about women fighters?)

COMMENTARY ON DJ KHALED’S MOM

Well, like I said, Mother’s and kids are off limits and this series of events continues to roar in the mainstream. A person very cool with Khaled’s mother emailed me. This letter really paints a picture on the matter and also humanizes “Mama.” Here is the knowledge and wisdom.

Hi illseed,

I would like to comment on the whole 50 and at Khaled’s mom thing. I know his mother very well and speak with her on a regular basis. I’m not one to frequent your site, but a friend of mine told me about the video he had seen.

I spoke with Khaled’s mom (almost everyone refers to her as “mama”) just this evening and thought it would be best if I brought this up since it was getting so much attention. Mama is very distraught over this situation. She is worried to the point where she can’t even feel safe. Her privacy was violated and the whole situation was very intrusive.

The day that video was shot Mama was very sick. She had been resting when those BOYS came in to question her. They asked her if she was Khaled’s mom and she answered them, asking them to leave her alone. She had no idea they were recording her.

Mama is the sweetest women you will ever come across, she genuinely cares for people. What is going on is WRONG. No one should bring anyone’s family into the situation. Both of these men should grow up. It was entertaining in the beginning, but now it has gotten to a level that is all too personal. Both sides are at fault and both sides need to GROW UP and handle the matter maturely. I understand that this is how the “industry” works, but to get to the point where an older woman feels threatened in her own business or home for the matter, is outrageous.

Mama also heard the “poem” 50 wrote, and feels threatened by it. I noticed that many people visit your site and leave there input. I would greatly appreciate it if you would help the matter. I don’t know if you really can, but I think you might be able to at least influence the rest of your audience to see that this is getting a bit out of hand. When the matter does not address a person directly they don’t feel how great of an impact it makes.

To see how hurt Mama is by this situation hurts everyone around her. I hope that you can at least shed some light to everyone else on how much this is influencing and hurting the lives of everyone involved. This matter really needs to be resolved before it escalates ever more.

RICK ROSS COMMENTS ON 50 CENT & KHALED’s MOM

Rick Ross says that Khaled’s mom is safe now…but she still is scared!

50 CENT’S NEW CARTOON: “Officer Ricky Episode 3 Everybody Hates Chris”

I wonder how long this is going to carry on. Anyway, 50 Cent lashes out at Rick Ross again. I see Foxy Brown is in this cartoon too. I wonder if she’s going to give 50 another 24 to fix the cartoon.

PIMPIN’ KEN DISSES PIMPIN’ CURLY!

I’m not sure what this about, but a Pimp goes against a gangsta who disses a drug lord. This is crazy.

“This is pimpin!” Everybody is a comedian.

Game Review: Grand Theft Auto IV “The Lost And Damned”

Developer/Publisher: Rockstar NorthPlatform: XBOX 360 (Exclusive)

Players: 1-16 (Online)Release Date: 2/17/09

Rating: A-

Grand Theft Auto IV The Lost And Damned (Rockstar North) is a downloadable episode developed exclusively for the Xbox 360 gaming console. While it may not break as much ground as its predecessor, this expansion pack gives GTA IV new life with a drastic change in plot, leading character, and accompanying missions.

Traditionally most expansions offer a couple of new levels and one or two tweaks to the game play if you are lucky. Where Lost And Damned succeeds is that you play as an entirely different character with Johnny Klebitz. Our boy Johnny is a high ranking member in a Liberty City biker gang The Lost; hence the title. Johnny has been in charge while the outfit’s official boss Billy Grey sobered up in rehab. Now Billy is home and wants to put the murder game down; a total opposite of Johnny’s rationale.

While Lost uses the same engine, the game plays out different. With GTA IV, there was some serious character development with its protagonist Niko Bellic and his story. In the case of Johnny who made some brief appearances in the previous title, you are immediately thrown into serious action after the first and very violent cut screen as you and your crew chases down a rival gang on bikes with a shotgun in tow. The storyline moves quickly often intertwining with the original.

In regards to the scenery, Liberty City remains pretty much in tact which takes away some of this game’s draw. What does change is that certain areas and buildings that were previously inaccessible in IV are now open (i.e. The Lost’s headquarters). Also instead of working your way through missions to visit new territories, everything is unlocked since you already got the tour with Niko.

In terms of noticeable additions, Rockstar stepped it up in a couple of areas. An assortment of new weapons are available for players to cause havoc with including automatic 9mm, pipe bombs, sawed off shotguns and a grenade launcher to top it off.

The rides get an update as well. With a biker gang motif, we get seventeen new motorcycles to compliment the improved bike handling mechanics. The online gaming also gets expanded with new modes of play (“Witness Protection”, “Race”, “Own The City”). To keep everything fresh sonically, new songs are injected into all the stations. Funkmaster Flex and Statik Selektah host new shows on The Beat 102.7 as well.

Overall The Lost And Damned brings even more replay value to an already addictive title. While this might not be an entirely new show, the stellar gameplay remains intact. This episode will quell the stomach pains of die hard GTA junkies craving a new installment in the series.

Rapper Big L Remembered 10 Years Later

It has been 10 years since the tragic loss of Harlem’s “Big L,” but the revered wordsmith ‘s legacy continues to live on.

Born Lamont Coleman in 1974, L began writing rhymes at the age of 16 in 1990.

“Lamont was a funny little boy, a jealous little boy. ‘Come on mama, let’s race.’ When I’d win, he’d get mad. One Christmas I bought [Lamont and his brothers] turntables and a mixer. [Lamont] would be the MC. Leroy would be the DJ,” Big L’s mother Gilda Terry told AllHipHop.com in a previous interview. “Donald would be the dancer. I’d laugh at them. It was the worst thing I could’ve done. It made so much noise. That’s how he got into music and stuff. He really, really was into it. After a while, the newness of that went. But Lamont stayed right with it. He just loved it. He was a good kid. He always had a mind of his own. When he set his mind to do something, he just did it.”

Even though he was still cultivating his craft as a teenager, his natural talent drew the attention from members of the famed collective Diggin’ In the Crates (DITC).

Lord Finesse then placed the young emcee on the 1992 song “Party Over Here.”

Later in that year, L went on to further build his name on critically acclaimed LPs from Diamond D (Stunts, Blunts, and Hip-Hop) and Showbiz and A.G. (Runaway Slave).

In 1993, L signed with Columbia Records and created a minor buzz courtesy of the blasphemous single “Devil’s Son.”

He released his embryonic debut Lifestylez ov da Poor and Dangerous in 1995.

The project featured appearances from then largely unknown future stars Jay-Z and Cam’ron.

Despite mostly positive reviews and buzz around his native New York through the Lord Finesse produced single “M.V.P.,” the album did not receive the promotion and attention of his contemporaries like the Notorious B.I.G., Wu Tang Clan, Nas, and others.

After being dropped, L sought out fellow Harlem emcees Mase, Cam’ron, McGruff, and Bloodshed to form Children of the Corn.

Although the group recorded over 30 songs while shopping for a record deal with producer Digga, the collective rapidly fell apart after the death of Bloodshed in a car accident.

Starting in 1997, L began working on what would be become his final album, The Big Picture.

Through his very own label Flamboyant Records, Big L scored an underground hit in the summer of 1998 courtesy of the single “Ebonics (Criminal Slang).”

L would follow up his momentum with other underground favorites such as “Size ‘Em Up” and “Flamboyant.”

The innovative lead single caught the ear of former collaborator Jay-Z, who was in the process of finalizing terms to bring L to Roc-A-Fella before tragedy struck in February 1999.

At the age of 24, Big L was shot repeatedly in the head and chest on February 15, shortly after leaving his home in Harlem.

The brutal slaying yielded an early arrest of a childhood friend, but the suspect was subsequently released due to lack of evidence.

The murder remains unsolved, and speculation has ranged from the execution being a case of mistaken identity to retaliation against L’s brother Big Lee, a street figure who was in prison at the time.

Lee was also murdered shortly after his release from prison.

Big L’s final album The Big Picture was released in August 2000 via Rawkus Records.

L’s tragic death and the reverence bestowed on him from various Hip-Hop stars helped push the project well past gold at over 600,000 copies sold.

Today, Big L remains well respected in Hip-Hop culture, and a shining albeit somber example of unfulfilled potential.

This year, Lamont “Big L” Colman would have celebrated his 35th birthday.

“He loved the neighborhood,” Mrs. Terry said. “He loved 139th Street. I loved 139th Street until he got killed, because before that, it was a close-knit block.”

Jay-Z on Rihanna: “Imagine It Being Your Sister Or Mom”

Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter broke his silence on the Rihanna/Chris Brown alleged domestic violence case on Saturday during the highly trafficked NBA All-Star Weekend.

“This is a real situation. You have to have compassion for others. Just imagine it being your sister or mom and then think about how we should talk about that,” Jay-Z said while at “Sprite Green presents the Third Annual Two Kings dinner with Jay-Z and Lebron James.”

The mogul made no mention of guilt or innocence, but simply offered words of encouragement.

“I just think we should all support her. She’s going through a tough time. You have to realize she’s a young girl, as well. She’s very young,” he stated.

Jay-Z was not as open when asked if he had seen Rihanna since the alleged incident and replied, “I don’t want to go into it.”

The remarks of compassion are far different than the US magazine report that Jay-Z labeled Brown a “walking dead man.”

Rihanna’s father, Ronald Fenty, told People magazine that his super start daughter is bruised, but “she will be all right.” He said he spent time with her on Thursday in Barbados.

Chris Brown’s father also spoke to People and said that his son is apologetic about the matter that has marred the singer’s entertainment persona. Clinton Brown of Toppahannock, Virginia said, “He’s reflecting on this situation. He’s very remorseful. He’s very concerned about the situation he wants to make sure that (Rihanna is) okay.”

Ronald Fenty also said that he was happy, the couple’s relationship was over.”The relationship is over and I am pleased. She doesn’t want to speak

to Chris. She is being very brave about things and said that she will

be back on stage performing soon,” Fenty said.

The 20-year-old Rihanna was allegedly attacked on Feb. 8 in Los Angeles by Chris Brown, 19. Brown was subsequently arrested and faces several years in jail. Authorities have yet to formally reveal that Rihanna is actually the victim of the attack.

Queen Latifah Tapped to Sing Oscars Tribute to Deceased Actors

Oscar nominated rapper/actress Queen Latifah has been recruited to honor deceased actors and actresses during this year’s Academy Awards.

The entertainer will sing the standard “I’ll Be Seeing You” while movie clips and photographs of stars that have passed away in the last year are shown on a huge screen.

Latifah first attracted the attention of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences through her role as Matron “Mama” Morton in the Oscar-winning film adaptation of the hit musical Chicago.

The portrayal of Morton garnered the entertainer a best supporting actress nomination for her work in the 2003 feature.

As a result, Latifah joins Will Smith as the only rapper/actors to receive an Oscar nomination by the Academy.

Smith collected a nod for best actor for playing boxing legend Muhammad Ali in 2001’s Ali and his turn as homeless salesman turned stockbroker Chris Gardner in the 2006 film The Pursuit of Happiness.

The Brad Pitt film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button leads all films for this year’s Oscar ceremony with 13 nominations, including Best Picture.

Pitt’s co-star, Taraji P. Henson, received a best supporting actress nod for her work as “Queenie”, a nursing home worker who discovers a baby who has the features of an old man on her doorstep.

She will square off against fellow first time Oscar nominee Viola Davis, who is being considered for her role as the mother of an abuse victim in the film Doubt.

Davis and Henson’s nomination mark the first time in several years that two African-American actresses have competed against each other in the same category.

History was made the first time when Oprah Winfrey and Margaret Avery were both nominated for best supporting actress for 1985’s The Color Purple.

The 81st annual Academy Awards will air live at 8 p.m. ET Feb. 22 on ABC.

MOVIE REVIEW: Friday The 13th

The hockey mask wearing serial killer Jason Voorhees is back in the latest Friday the 13th film.

However this is not just another installment in the Friday the 13th film series but a complete reworking of the storyline. The film keeps many elements of the original series, while at the same time being surprising and scary. Everyone who is familiar with the original Friday the 13th film series already knows the basic storyline: deformed boy drowns, his mother goes crazy and becomes a murderer and is ultimately killed, boy returns from the dead and seeks revenge on all camp counselors. But this new film gives a bit of a twist that the original film never hinted on which was what if Jason had never been dead in the first place.

In the new version of Friday the 13th Jason is introduced as a character in a myth, a story that was thought to be created to scare camp counselors. However that myth seems to be more real than they expected when the character comes to life and wreaks havoc so to speak, as Jason begins killing them off one by one. Then some time passes and another group of intruders roam along Jason’s territory Camp Crystal Lake, and are murdered one by one as one of the intruders searches for his missing sister, where she was last spotted, not knowing that he too will have to face the wrath of Jason.

The film lets the viewer see how Jason becomes Jason so to speak, and gives us some clues about how he was able to survive so to speak. From what drove Jason to become a serial killer to how Jason lived to why he started wearing his trademark mask are all explained to some degree in the film. Hence the film becomes one of revenge, and protecting what one feels is rightfully there’s, and trying to unlock the clues of the unknown. However like the original film series Jason never says a word and remains the silent monster stalking his victims. also in this film Jason does not just kill his victims with his trademark machete but uses other methods and weapons to accomplish his task.

I must mention this is not a remake of the original remake. As everyone may already be aware in the original Friday the 13th film Jason Voorhees was not the killer, his mother was and in fact, Jason appeared as a figment of the main character’s imagination. The character of Jason wasn’t introduced until the second film, and did not wear his trademark hockey mask until the third film in the Friday the 13th series. What this film does is combine the sequence of the first four films, and adds it’s own spin.

I would highly recommend this film, especially to anyone who was a fan of the original Friday the 13th series. Not only does it have plenty of suspense, fear factor, but it gives all the characters personality especially Jason who in the original film was sort of like a mindless beast. In this film Jason uses clever tactics, and traps to get his victims.

Bottom line you mess with Jason you better watch out.
