THE DAY REPORT: How To Stand Out (And Why You’d Want To Anyway)

You probably have a demo CD and have opened up for Gucci Mane, Mims, or Rick Ross when they came through your city.  It’s not enough. You probably have a list of every A&R person in the music industry to shop beats to, with their email addresses.  It’s not enough. You might even be smart enough to attend an industry event where the key players are in attendance and you have a polished CD with colorful artwork and it’s good.  Really good.  It’s not enough. You might even have a hot single featuring Lil Wayne, or if you didn’t have Lil Wayne money, it features 8Ball or MJG or Jim Jones.  They could be all over every song, it doesn’t matter—it’s not enough. You might even have deeper pockets than others do, but you see where this is going—it’s definitely not enough.  You can’t buy success.  In fact, deep pockets make people treat you like a wallet and you just go broke after awhile.  Imagine if you will, that there are over 50,000 people who want to be rappers, 100,000 people who want to be producers, and another 25,000 who want to be singers.  Half of them have enough talent to get past the first year.  Of those remaining, 25% have the work ethic to continue past the second year struggling to get on.  Of those remaining, 1% have the charisma to be a star, and half of those are willing to do whatever it takes to win—that’s called passion.Let’s say you are in that Top Half of  1%…here’s what you are competing with:Of the 4 major labels (Universal, WEA, Sony/BMG, Capitol—and is Virgin even doing anything in urban music anymore?) and the additional 4 or 5 “incubators and indies” that are really doing anything worthwhile, they can only distribute MAYBE 40 to 60 acts a year, and that includes artists who are already signed.  Signed artists who’ve already sold a lot of CDs will always be the priority projects because they’re proven entities—the risk is reduced.  This is a business, after all.Of those 40 or 60 acts, if you are a new producer trying to get into the music business, that’s only 400 to 800 songs.  I have over 5,000 producers in my data base.  There’s just not that much work out here!  You’re really gonna have to stand out.My point isn’t to depress you or to try and stop you from wanting to live your dream.  My point is the opposite!  To win, you have to stand out from everyone else.  You have to work harder, be smarter, have better knowledge, better connections, access to people who can and want to help you, have a better team, and maybe, just maybe, even have a little more talent than everyone else.  And you damn well better have the charisma to be a star.  And you better continue to work harder than everyone else because the day that you stop grinding, along comes someone else a little hungrier to take your place. The problem with music is that it is so subjective.  Everyone thinks they know what’s good and what’s not, but they fail to realize that there are all different kinds of music because there are all different tastes in music.  No one person can say what’s good or bad.  There are a select few people that can hit successfully more times than others, but no one hits 100% success rates all the time.  No one.  Even the greats have more failed projects than successful ones (Berry Gordy, Clive Davis, Dr Dre, Puffy, etc).So how will you NOT stand out from your competition?Hopefully you’ve already gotten past the basic conventions and websites that people like me find useless because they are so damn basic—the ones that tell you to: •    NEVER hand someone a demo without contact information printed on it, •    NEVER to scrawl your info with a sharpie marker on it when it’s so easy to print labels for the CD,•    NEVER change your phone number that’s on your demo because you don’t know who may call you down the road one day•    NEVER mail your demo to record labels because they’ll send them right back or throw them away (or jack your idea, music, hook, beat, etc)•    Get your grind on, but don’t tell you how or even what that really means,•    Find a lawyer or manager to shop your demo, when no lawyer or manager has the time or energy to shop even their OWN artists’ demos•    Even have a demo CD (when I’ve yet to see anyone get signed to a deal that has turned into a successful career from “a demo.” )Yet, you gotta have a demo CD, because someone somewhere in this industry will eventually ask you for one either to see what you have, or to blow you off: you see, it’s easier to just take your CD and keep it moving than it is to explain to you how people REALLY get signed to record deals. So how will you actually stand out from your competition and not fall prey to the industry b#######?If you are a producer, the best way to build a career if you don’t want to shop endless beat CDs, hawk endless tracks to artists in their own habitats (studios and backstage at shows), or give away more free beats than is humanly bearable, is to produce for the hottest artists in your region.  Yes, many are lazy and won’t make it, but if you are smart, you will only lend them your beats—this is called licensing the beat.  If the artist goes somewhere, great.  If they don’t, you can reuse the beat after a certain amount of time or update it or tighten it up and re-license it to a more motivated artist.  Being the producer of a new hit artist or crew is how Dr Dre, Mannie Fresh, Beats By The Pound, Swizz Beats, Hitmen, and many others established themselves.  Other artists and industry folks flocked to buy that new producer’s sound once they saw the commercial viability of it.If you are an artist (Rapper or Singer), to stand out you will need to be everywhere, perform as much as possible, flood the streets with product, and build your name and brand.  You’ll start with your block, then grow to your ‘hood, then expand to your city, then grow to your state, then take-over your region, etc.  It’s a growth process and it won’t happen overnight.  Most artists who grind do so for anywhere from 1 year to 7 years before they break through.  But they break through by standing out. What The F*ck?!I was inspired to write this article because I just recently embraced Twitter.  Eventually, my assistant will take over when I get burned out, just like I did with MySpace and FaceBook.  Sadly, for me, being accessible doesn’t mean I get to be more helpful, or even make more money doing what I do (be real, like 1% of you reading this even know what it is that I really do)…it means I waste more time explaining the basic s### to folks that they could have read on my websites for free.  And I get a little attitude about it…The most common Tweet I seem to get is “HI Wendy!  Remember me?”  There is no good answer to that question, because if I remembered you, you’d already know it and wouldn’t need to ask me that.  Also, you probably met me once at a conference where there were thousands of other people, and you shook my hand and pressed a demo into my fingers even though I just got done saying on a panel how useless demos really are.  I guess you probably thought you were different from the other 400 demos I got that day.  Multiply that day by twice a week.  Now multiply that by 52 weeks in a year.  Now multiply that by 18 years.  I’d remember you……because why? Some folks try to stand out by doing stupid disrespectful s###.  My favorite is always the idiots who knock on my door at 4am at a convention to hand me a CD.  As I’m standing at the door rubbing the sleep out of my eyes, trying to explain to my boyfriend why he shouldn’t kick you down the hallway, you think it’s your BIG opportunity and you take it.  Nope, that’s called burning a bridge.  I remember each and every one of you and I can’t do s### for you, ever.  By the way, not one of you has ever gotten a deal in this industry—not because of me, but because you’re an idiot.Handing me a CD at a convention when I am eating a meal, standing in line at a panel at the microphone to ask a question, or in a meeting with someone else, is also a very bad idea.  I won’t even listen to your CD.  Maybe the maid will pull it out of the trashcan in my room and listen to it, I dunno.  No one owes you anything.  People choose to help you in this industry either because they can make money off of you, or because it’s easy for them to do so (or enjoyable, but that’s really rare). The artists whom I befriend and who are in my inner circle—and there are a lot of them, are the ones who stood out.  Either I kept bumping into them getting their grind on out on the streets, or I heard so many people in the industry mention them that I had to seek them out, or they were referred by someone I respect (but even one referral won’t do it).  For example, BloodRaw, PapaDuck, GrandPrix, Primo Starr, Boosie and Webbie, Yo Gotti, Birmingham J, Lil Weavah, Roccett, Boo, J Harden, Drumma Boy (producer) and G Mack were all artists whom I bumped into repeatedly on the streets getting their grind on.  Anyone of them can testify that if they call me up, I answer their calls immediately.  They didn’t have to come to me, I went and found them.A recent example of a referral is a rapper out of Dallas by way of Shreveport called S Fresh.  A DJ from Memphis whom I respect sent a mass text message to anyone who’d listen saying this kid was in his club the night before and he is a star.  I called around to others in Memphis and no one heard of S Fresh, so I assumed it was some b#######.  I hit Hydro back assuming someone had compromised his phone to send a blast.  He assured me it was real and that the kid is a star.  He was so passionate that I began the process of finding S Fresh.  My first stop was MySpace.  On his page, he had Drumma Boy in his top friends and two Drumma Boy beats on songs on his page.  I called Drumma on a Wednesday and was sitting in a meeting with S Fresh in Atlanta by Friday.  I have no idea how I can help this artist, but you better believe he could call me anytime for anything and if I could help him, I will.  Because he stood out.So how do you really stand out?You work harder than everyone else.  You have talent, strong work ethic, good music, and knowledge of how the music industry works.  You have a good team (90% of the artists I do not work with is because they have a s##### team), you have charisma, you have some business sense in addition to your artistry, you’re humble and polite, and patient.  But most importantly, you put yourself into a position where I can step in and help you, easily, get to the next level.  No one can do this for you.  But if you are close enough to your objective, anyone can apply their power and connections to help you make it down the last stretch.  The easier you make it for someone to help you, the more likely you are to receive the help. And maybe, just maybe, that help will come from someone who is genuine and honest, and they won’t rape the s### out of you financially…. That’s how you stand out in this industry.

New Young Buck Material On The Way

Former G-Unit standout Young Buck has announced his long-awaited return to Hip-Hop via a mixtape of all new material.

Following his public and bitter departure from G-Unit last April, Buck has focused on building up his Cashville Records imprint.

Additionally, he’s pursued business endeavors such as his very own watch and clothing lines.

Now, the Nashville native is ready to appease his patient music fans with exclusive, original material.

“The streets done waited long enough,” Buck stated. “So get ready, the mixtape is on the way…[I’m] back on my Buck sh*t.”

The as of now untitled mixtape will feature co-hosting duties between DJ Scream (Heavy In the Streets) and DJ Smallz (Southern Smoke).

According to Young Buck, the triumvirate alliance will deliver the buzz-heavy return he needs for 2009.

“That’s some big s**t,” Buck stated. “[They] are two heavy mixtape DJs that f**ks with the streets hard [and are] coming together to f**k with a ni**a. I showed up heavy.”

Although a release date has not been confirmed, the mixtape is expected to feature appearances from Cashville Records artists such as C-Bo and Tha Outlawz.

You Are 30-40 Years Old AND WACK!

“All his peoples moved on in life, he’s on the corners at night

with young dudes it’s them he wanna be like

It’s sad but it’s fun to him, right? He never grew up

31 and can’t give his youth, he’s in his second childhood”

-NaS

on “2nd Childhood”

Listen and listen good, you stinkin’ bum.

I don’t know what is going to take, but let me be the proverbial cold, icy water that wakes you out of your walking dead-like slumber.

My friend, you are either pushing 30 years old, 40 years old or knocking on both landmark ages.

Here is the problem; your mind state is that of an 16-year-old-child.

I just cannot take this anymore. I am disgusted with the state of my generation. When I say “my generation,” I mean the people that are between the ages of 28-42. I know that’s a wide range, but it is significantly broad.

In the so-called Hip-Hop Nation, we are seeing the 28 and 42 year olds acting about the same. The 28 year old is still trying to get his struggling rap/producer/video game/gigolo/stripper career off the ground and so is that 40-year-old fool.

When you are approaching 30 or surpassing 40, your priorities should begin to adjust a bit – no they should shift a lot. The issue I have with you is you are still trying to live your 2nd, 3rd and 4th childhood and all I can see is a mental midget of an adult. A 28 year old is obviously at liberty to be more free-spirited that somebody that is 42, but something has to click. It is apart of the process of living. When you are 42, there is no way you should have the same mentality as a 28 year old or an 18 year old, but that is what’s happening time and time over.

I see you every day.

You still watch BET and MTV. You get your cues about what’s “in” from watching “106 & Park.” You buy a lot of clothes and a fresh car to present the outward impression that you are “somebody” that has “something.” You “jive talk” to be “down” with the very kids you should be mentoring. You never, ever want to give a woman/man a shot for a committed relationship – even the good ones. You are only looks for a baller-type of man or woman that looks (or is) like she’s a “tip-drill” from a bad rap video.

Sadly, a lot of these people are real rappers that entertain the masses and they often set the tone for you sheepish morons that I am write these words for. The rappers are the ones that beef needlessly even though they are safe behind their security detail. They are the ones that write b***h-hoe songs even though they are happily married with kids. They are the ones that live and breath for money and self-interests. You are a different story, my friend. You typically don’t happiness, a family or any success to speak of. You have a bottle of some expensive liquor you cannot afford or a weed habit that has suppressed mature ambitions. You barely get by…you are stressed…and you are committed to the vicious cycle.

You are WACK.

I see you almost every day and you are the norm, it seems. Honestly, I can’t take it much more. I don’t have very many friends, because I have just been utterly disgusted at what has become of some very promising people. People with talent. People will what I thought was a good “head on his/her shoulder.” People have seen their possibilities dissipate into a puff of smoke until there was nothing left.

In my dreams, I envision the best for you. I envision that you wake up, catch up and we all go hang out. I envision that you will be a positive influence on that 18 year old that has already started to emulate you and your ways. I don’t want you to be me or even let go of the dreams you hold onto so steadfastly. I just want you to wake up. When my alarm clock goes off, I awaken to the reality that I will walk through the day and gaze on an apparent worthless waste of flesh that won’t even leave as much of a footprint upon expiration.

Now, that’s depressing.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Eminem, 50 Cent, Dr. Dre, The Game – The CRAZY RUMOR DUMBOUT!

DISCLAIMER:

All content within this section is pure rumor and generally have no factual info outside of what the streets have whispered in our ear. Read on.

TODAY’S RUMORS!

Warming, if you don’t like 50 Cent, Eminem, Dr. Dre or illseed…don’t read unless you can’t resist yourself! There are some other stuff mixed in there too!

EMINEM RUMORS!

Honestly, I have attempted to stay in tune with what is going on with Dr. Dre, Eminem and 50 Cent (aka The Three-Headed Monster) as much as possible. I don’t know where this all came from, but I got a monster list of rumors (and possible news) regarding all of the guys. Some of this is certain to upset the “haters,” but will please those that are interested.

EMINEM’S RELAPSE TRACKLISTING!?

A DISS TO TO GAME?

I heard that there are a number of unnamed skits and whatnot to buffer all of those songs. But, there is something else that raised my eyebrow! A source has revealed that there may be a diss of THE GAME on Eminem’s new one. Now, I have to say…this just sounds unlikely. While, Eminem is known for dissing pop artists more than serious threats, he’s had a few winners. Still, a battle with The Game would be one for the ages. There is no mystery that The Game has had some questionable lines about Dre and associations that wouldn’t sit well with Eminem (think Ja Rule). I guess we’ll see, eh? I’d love to see this happen since both dudes are so lyrical and competitive.

Rick Ross continues to bang out heat! I have to say, I am expecting a real bangin’ album based on the music thus far. I’m sorry…this song, you cannot deny. Rick Ross feat. Kanye West, Lil Wayne & T-Pain – “Maybach Music 2”

KANYE WEST IS A GAY FISH!

South Park parodied Kanye West. I wonder what Ye will say about this.

NEVER EVER – CAM’RON AND JIM JONES WILL NEVER TALK AGAIN!

Cam’ron runs it down. He’s got some serious points right here.

Meanwhile, Cam has a show in NYC and it sold out in one hour.

DMC HAS A STORY TO TELL!

We’ve been celebrating Run DMC’s induction into the Rock Hall of Fame! Here is a video where DMC talks about writing the hit record, “My Adidas!”

LIL WAYNE NOT SUING DJ’S?Somebody I know hit me with some info and they seemed a bit perturbed at the notion that Lil Wayne would be suing DJ’s.  He “just wanted to make a few things clear,” and said that its not Lil Wayne suing the

DJ’s. He told me that its actually Universal/Cash Money suing all the DJ’s. I suppose there is a difference. Apparently DJ Drama is cool and understands that the legal action is not from Weezy but the powers that be. But, then one has to ask why is Cash Money suing the mixtape DJ? Click here for the AHH story where Drama breaks it down.

BACK TO CLASSIC 50 CENT?

Lets just be real. 50 Cent is in a weird space. His name is bigger than ever, but there’s no hit record yet. With that said, I am hearing that Before I Self Destruct is nothing less than a CLASSIC. I heard it goes “back” to GRODT with the real honest talk in the songs. I heard this from more than one source, so I am a believer. I hope the Rick Ross stuff doesn’t become a distraction in our quest for a great album. As far as production, 50 went hard. Here are some of the notables rumored to be on it. Dr. Dre , Eminem, Timbaland, J.R. Rotem, Scott Storch, Jake One, Ty Fyffe, Don Cannon, DJ Premier, Hi-Tek, Havoc, will.i.am, Swizz Beats, Lloyd Banks, Tony Yayo, and others.

BACK TO THE “HIP-HOP” 50 CENT? LOL!

I have been hearing about these relationships for so long, I don’t know what to think. BUT, I am hearing that 50 Cent and Freeway are about to solidify their relationship on paper. I heard the deal has been in the works for over 2 years and Free and 50 are very cool. In fact, I heard he’ll be working with Mike Knox on the G-Unit Philly crew. Also, Fif is supposedly working with Uncle M aka Uncle Murder. 50 Cent and Jada on a track? Don’t sleep!

NAS & 50 CENT – REALLY?

This made my ears perk up. Nas and 50 have had beef for as long as I can’t remember. Well, not that long, but several years. There is a strong rumor than Nas and 50 Cent will do a song AGAIN. Is there a song called “Guilty Behavior” that features Nas and 50? I PRAY it does. Sorry, God…I have to pray for this one. As you know, Nas is cool with Dre (where is THAT album) and Eminem once rapped like Nas. (I had to.)

Also, They are saying that NATE DOGG may actually show up on 50’s album. I should pray for that, because Nate Dogg has had such a rough couple of years with all those strokes.

DETOX…ON HOLD OR LATER THIS YEAR?

I know people are tired of this…completely, utterly sick of this rumor. The fact is, new intel is saying Detox IS on hold. They are saying it will be out after 50’s is finished aka THIS YEAR. That seems to be hard to believe in some ways, because I heard they are suppoed to tour. We know that Dre can’t tour if he’s got no new product or new music. Anyway, I heard the album – if it ever sees thelight of day – will feature just about everybody that Dre has ever worked with, including The Game. Does that negate the previous rumor of an Eminem diss? One of these probably isn’t right.

Folks that may appear on Detox:

Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Bishop Lamont, The Game, Guvner, Knoc-turn’al, Lloyd Banks, Warren G, Nate Dogg, T.I., Nas, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Fergie, will.i.am, Dawuan Parker, Mary J. Blige, Rell, Devin The Dude, Linkin Park, RZA, GZA, Method Man, Redman, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Usher, Kanye West, Tony Yayo, Kurupt, Daz, Xzibit, Six-Two, Ms. Roq, Defari, Blu, King Tee, Kokane, Havoc, DJ Quik, Drake, Kardinal Offishall, Ice Cube, MC Ren, Beyonce, & the list goes on. Production consist of: Dr. Dre, Eminem, Boi-1da, Focus, Dewuan Parker, Hi-Tek, JR Rotem, Scott Storch, RZA, DJ Khalil, Mel-Man, Warren G, Kanye West, & more.

Some songs:

“The Day of Light” [featuring Nas, Jay-Z, T.I., & Eminem]

“Change” [featuring Snoop Dogg, Bishop Lamont, & Blu]

“What Did I Say [featuring Bishop Lamont]

“Detox” [featuring Bishop Lamont, Nas, & T.I.]

“Innocent Criminal” [featuring Knoc-turn’al, Warren G, GZA, & Raekwon]

With all that said, I don’t know what to believe here. I’d like to believe it, but all those guest appearances seem a bit much. We’ll see.

MAINO IS A REAL CAT – BUYS JADAKISS’ ALBUM

Now, isn’t this better than BS beefing?

THE GAME’S NEXT ALBUM

We all know The Game isn’t retiring and shouldn’t have ever said he was. I knew he wouldn’t! With that said, there’s some info about his new album, supposedly set for a September release. I originally heard the album was to be called Global Warming, but more recently, I am hearing it is called The Red Album. I also heard a new release date of November. Wonder why? Rumor has it, there will be no guest appearances from rappers. As far as beats, he’ll reportedly have Kanye West, Just Blaze, DJ Khaled, J.R. Rotem, Jelly Roll, Cool & Dre, Nottz, Scott Storch, The Neptunes, DJ Khalil, will.i.am, Swizz Beats, & Hi-Tek.

During a recent show date in New York, I know The Game recorded some songs with I-don’t-know-who. I also heard that he’s cranked out over 100 songs like last time.

INFO ON THE GAME AND MUSLIMS

If you read yesterday, you know a rapper named “The Armed MC” said Game was trying to diss Muslims. I knew there was another side.

Here is an opinion:

Dear AllHipHop:

It is my opinion that Game did not intentionally set out to disrespect Muslims; however, it is clearly inappropriate for these words to be associated with the song. For more information on the Shahada, click here. This is a case where the artist needs to be advised of his error, and the song should be recalled as well as an apology issued to the Muslim community.

Relapse 2 will drop before Detox this year.

Tony Yayo’s new album is supposedly called The Godfather of the Ghetto.

OTHER RUMORS!

Jadakiss is going to be doing a reality show on him finding a new DJ. I wonder what’s the drama in that? We’ll see.

My homeboy wild100vet hit me with this spectacular news! He told me about the crazy lineup for Rock the Bells 2009. This is what we are hearing: Common, the Roots, Big Boi, Slaughterhouse, KRS-One, Reflection Eternal and many others and it is being headliner are Nas & Damian Marley.

Too Short played Helsinki, Finland last Sunday! That’s mighty “big” of Short Dawg!

EPIC FAILURE OF THE DAY

I don’t understand the language, but apparently this is some sort of appeal to president Obama. I don’t know hat he know, but I hope he now knows we don’t appreciate the Blackface, Turkey! Also, I could be wrong, but isn’t your average Turkish person about the same complexion or darker than light a$$ Obama?

50 Cent Confirms Rumors Of Rick Ross C.O. Footage

Hip-Hop star 50 Cent has confirmed that he has a tape of rapper Rick Ross in an interview that recently hit the Internet.

50 Cent gave an exclusive interview with syndicated radio personalities Big Boi and Q-Deezy of the Big Boy Morning Show.

In the clip, 50 Cent and Big Boy are seen riding in one of 50 Cent’s cars having a casual conversation when the Queens-bred rapper confirmed that he has a tape in his possession.

“Now it’s public and the public knows that me and him don’t get along,” 50 Cent said. “So everybody who has things…I have a video tape of the actual graduation. That still photograph [of Ross in a Correctional Officer’s outfit], I have a videotape of that. I got like 60 photographs. I got his life story in photos from different time periods. He actually used to deliver medications, before he was a correctional officer.”

50 Cent claimed he authenticated various tips and photos he has received using Rick Ross’ baby mother and former girlfriend Tia Kemp, who is releasing a tell-all book about Ross, reportedly on April 21, the same day Ross’ opus Deeper Than Rap hits stores.

“How much more do you do when you can’t go see your kids because I said so? If I can control your life to that point, where you don’t want to go see your child, because I said ‘Ima f### your life up,’ then I feel like I accomplished what I was after.”

50 Cent also branded Ross a fool and dismissed the rapper’s claims that G-Unit employee Nelson Gomez recently offered him $500,000 to cease the war of words between the two.

“How much more of a fool can you make yourself? You can’t take anything serious from him…this has been the easiest one. I”ve never had anyone that’s had so many holes in just themselves and their past, right there. And for them to actually attack first without warning or reason. You know your s### is all f##### up back there and you gonna still just come. No plan or nothing.”

50 Cent also revealed that his upcoming album Before I Self Destruct has no release date as of press time.

The Game to Launch Clothing Line in Europe

West Coast platinum artist The Game has finalized plans for a European debut of his Black Wall Street brand.

Since his 2005 debut under G Unit, The Game has showcased various clothing items from Black Wall Street, but never previously offered a full line of products for sale.

Through the newly launched website http://www.bwseurope.com, The Game’s fledgling line will be available at competitive prices and designs for today’s urban market.

“We at BWS have been creating clothing items since Game and BWS began the climb to worldwide notoriety and popularity,” explained Black Wall Street President Tasiri Hixon to AllHipHop.com. “Now we are taking steps forward to really take the clothing and make it a complete apparel line that will carve out a niche place in the marketplace. Obviously we are still gearing up to launch domestically soon and will be in retail stores and online stores soon.”

Along with promoting the new line, bwseurope.com aims to bolster Game’s international presence through social networking, and unite the diverse urban music cultures across the region.

The website will also feature direct participation from Black Wall Street members, and representation of artists from 2 step, bassline, dubstep, funky house, and grime music genres.

At press time, Game is working on new Black Wall Street mixtapes with DJ Skee and XO, and completing the relaunch of www.thisizgame.com.

AHH Stray News: Flo Rida Heading To American Idol
