Jay-Z, Will Smith Back $11 Mil “Fela” Play

Rappers Jay-Z and Will Smith are among the investors in a Broadway play about the life of Nigerian singer/activist Fela Kuti.

The heavyweight Hip-Hop duo are backing an $11 million dollar production of Bill. T. Jones’ musical “Fela,” which will open in November.

The original version of the play opened off-Broadway last September, starring actor Sahr Ngaujah, who will reprise his critically acclaimed role as Fela Kuti.

Financial concerns due to the recession briefly halted production of the play, which was written and co-produced by Steve Hendel.

Tony Award winner Bill T. Jones choreographs and directs “Fela” using the pioneering Afro-Beat style of music Kuti created with his Black-Panther inspired group, Africa 70.

Kuti was one of Africa’s most well known musicians and activists and was eventually imprisoned and released by the Nigerian government on a currency smuggling charge.

The singer died in 1997 due to complications from AIDS.

The 2-hour “Fela” play is slated to debut at the Eugene O’Neill theater on October 19 and will run until April 4.

Box office opens September 28th, while previews of the play start October 19th.

T-Pain, Fabolous Squash “D.O.A.” Beef

In response to a recent interview by Jay-Z, singer T-Pain has clarified the reasons for the recent disparaging words about the mogul at a Las Vegas show.

Last week, rapper Fabolous via Twitter and a video displayed T-Pain saying “f**k Jay-Z” and chastising the emcee as “old” and out of touch with today’s music scene.

In an interview on Ed Lover’s Morning Show, T-Pain explained his ire came from what he perceived as Jay-Z’s disrespect to him earlier this summer at NY’s Summer Jam.

“This isn’t the first time I’ve said it,” T-Pain stated. “I called Jay and said yo, can you come out during my set at the stadium and do the ‘DOA’ song? It would be a big look for me and you. I embraced the song…at the time he said he was triple-booked in Switzerland. I’m ready to go on after a Jeezy set and they said ‘hold on because Jay-Z is about to come out.’ I said well Jay-Z’s in Switzerland, and they’re like no he’s not he’s right there. I look and then there’s Jay-Z. That’s one thing.”

While some may perceive the issue is trivial, T-Pain argues the situation was exacerbated once the pair got on stage together for “D.O.A.”

“Then the line in the song where he says ‘I don’t need nobody smiling at this’ he pointed at me,” T-Pain revealed. “And at the end of the song when I tried to shake his hand he said ‘good riddance.’”

In related news, Fabolous called into the Angie Martinez Show yesterday (September 9) and revealed that he and T-Pain had squashed their beef, which began after the “f**k Jay-Z” comments.

Fabolous tweeted a number of disparaging remarks aimed at T-Pain, who is a featured producer on Fab’s new album Loso’s Way.

Fabolous made comments about T-Pain after hearing disparaging remarks about Jay-Z during T-Pain’s set at a club in Las Vegas last week.

He also mistakenly responded to a phony Twitter account that read “f**k Jay-Z and f**k Fabolous.

“He was doing his set and then in between each song, he just would go in on Jay. And I was like I can’t be from Brooklyn and just listen to this, I just felt like I had to say something

“He text me and said to call him and I called him. I apologized really because I kinda jumped out the window a little bit and didn’t check into it before I knew what I was doing, so I apologized for that. And he explaining the whole thing with Jay, how he felt like Jay was coming at him a little bit.”

Hexmurda’s Column: The Vice Of Fame

Whutupdoe…I had this great article written out about one of the mainstays in entertainment for people of color.

If I do say so myself, I WENT THE F**K IN.

Unfortunately, someone called a Klan meeting and shut the piece down.

Oh,the humanity.

It was brilliant.

Extravagant.

Monumental.

F**king awesome.

Gnarly.

Oh,well.

If you n***as keep thinking there aren’t Powers That Be overseeing everything, even what you listen to, read and write, then you may as well put the collars on your own necks and whip yourselves.

Whatever, f**k it now.

I’m sure that piece will show up somewhere, floating around like the Willie Lynch letter. As a matter of fact, I can guarantee it.

So…what do we talk about today…oh, I know.

Let’s talk about FAME.

Naw, not Coco and Leroy “FAME”, not even Jay-Z fame.

Let’s talk about n***as being famous for no f**king reason.

Over 40 years ago, Andy Warhol said that in the future everybody will be world-famous for 15 minutes.

That n***a was like f**king Nostradamus.

It seems that people are becoming famous (or infamous) for some of the dumbest s**t.

Lorena Bobbitt, John Wayne Bobbitt, Devin Brown,Octo Mom, Monica Lewinsky, Jon and Kate, Rodney King, Superhead, Tila Tequila, etc.

Those are just names off the top of my head, but at first glance it appears that you can become famous for sucking d**k, having a bunch of kids, getting beat the f**k up, or getting your d**k cut off. Great.

I don’t want to be famous that muthaf**king bad.

But some people do.

As a matter of fact, A LOT of people do.

That’s why we’ve got all these dumb-ass reality shows, like “Survivor,” “Big Brother” and “The Apprentice.” These are kind of like Reality Game shows, where you win prizes throughout while facing eliminations and s**t. Winning the grand prize is surely a great reward, but I don’t think that’s what everyone is there for.

A lot of them are there to become famous.

Come on, dog. I know you didn’t think those chicks on Flavor of Love REALLY wanted to marry f**king Flavor Flav, did you? That s**t just proved to me that some women will do ANYTHING to be on TV.

Maybe a couple of those slores on the Ray-J show did want to get a Kardashian facial from Brandy’s brother, but most of them just wanted to be featured in Eye Candy.

The funniest s**t about the nimrods on those shows is that they’re only famous until the next season starts, then they’ve got a whole new cast of human clay to play with, and the old cast members are like dust in the wind.

Remember the “Real World”?

I don’t remember anybody from that s**t except Kevin Powell, Heather B. and Coral.

Oh, and when Kenny Anderson’s broad and that dumb white chick tried to say that dude David from “House Party 3” was a rapist because he pulled her covers off.

What are we on, “Real World 49, Mars”?

They’re running out of cities. We should be coming up on “Real World, Compton” pretty f**king soon.

I can’t wait to see that s**t.

The problem with getting on TV is that it can get messy, time consuming. Audition tapes, casting calls, call backs, etc. Who needs all that s**t when you’ve got the Greatest Invention In The World (thanks Al Gore), the Internet right at your fingertips to lead you directly to the Second Greatest Invention in The World-youtube.

That’s right ladies and jerks, the great youtube!

ANYBODY can become famous on youtube. All you need is a camera and a dumb f**king idea (like you can rap).

Yup, with youtube, even YOU can create dumb ass songs/dances and sit back and wait for Mr. Collipark to come scoop you up in a stretch limo.

S**t, with youtube you can have your own f**king CHANNEL and broadcast your WHOLE F**KING LIFE. If you’re already famous, you can even make your girlfriend famous.

But a funny thing can happen with fame.

It can consume you.

It can become YOU.

Whatever persona a person creates to achieve a desired level of fame can eat said person alive.

Seems like everybody wants the cameras pointed at them. Not just their own cameras, but everybody elses, too.

The problem is, you can’t control all of them.

Sooner or later they’re gonna catch you taking a s**t.

So what does all this s**t have to do with Hip-Hop?

EVERY-F**KING-THING.

Rappers these days want to be seen, they want to be the topic of discussion, they want to be the Main Attraction. Unfortunately, only a few can achieve that status through actual talent, others have to resort to other means to get attention. Some n***as go on youtube and do a music video a day,or go on other sites like WSHH and basically just talk s**t about other rappers. No music, or actual raps, just calling some other dude a b####.

Rappers want the spotlight at any cost, if it’s creating fake or real beefs, or incriminating themselves on audio or visual. They don’t give a f**k.

They’re all screaming “LOOK AT ME!” and trying to see who can

scream it the loudest.

Sometimes you scream and get the wrong peoples attention.

Then THEY’LL make you famous.

N***as always wanna be in the Public Eye. Well, the Public Eye doesn’t shut, kids. You can’t just be famous when you feel like it.

Get too famous, and you can end up involuntarily becoming a hermit, or with pictures of your private area plastered all over public newsstands.

Gotta be careful what you wish for.

The quest for fame and glory evidently knows no boundaries.

Sooner or later some nobody is gonna go on youtube or ustream and cut their d**k off, and they’re gonna become The Most Famous Person In The World.

For about 15 minutes.

Then somebody else is gonna blow their f**king brains out live and in color, and take that title.

Then the penis amputee is just gonna be The Guy With No d**k, and the Suicidal Exhibitionist is just gonna be dead.

Bow Wow: On Drake, Wayne, Omarion, Chris Brown, Ciara & More

In the second part of this exclusive interview with Bow Wow, AllHipHop.com talked to the young rapper about many of his affiliations and peers. The new Cash Money Millionaire was open and candid.

AllHipHop.com: You’re an artist that has been in the music industry since birth. What has it been like growing in that atmosphere?

Bow Wow: Everyone already knows my story. Snoop discovered me at the age of five. The reason why I’m different than a lot of other rappers is because of my upbringing. I have always had people like Jermaine Dupri and Snoop in my corner to guide me and teach me the fundamentals about Hip Hop. I always credit that to why I am here and able to do what I do. There’s no telling where I would be if I hadn’t have met these guys early on in my career. I was on The Chronic tour with Snoop, Dre, and Tha Dogg Pound. Not to be cocky but people should check my resume. I was around when Onyx was hot and not too many people can say that. It’s a blessing for me to be young then and to still be young now. It’s amazing and a blessing.

When it came time to sign again I didn’t know if I could trust another major. I had a lot of deals on the table but I wanted to go in a different route. I, not only, wanted to be surrounded by people who want to win, but to also bring what I do to the table and help make everything bigger. I felt comfortable signing with them. I know them. They are good guys and right now we are number one.

1993: When Lil Bow Wow appeared on “The Arsenio Hall Show”

AllHipHop.com: You and Lil Wayne both started your rap careers at relatively young ages. He, however, is not pigeonholed into the box of child rapper. Do you feel Cash Money will be the label to help you reach that broader audience?

Bow Wow: Oh most definitely. If you just look at the rooster that’s on Cash Money you can see that we are a label like no other. We have Kevin Rudolph who had the “Let It Rock” record. We have the number one pop record. By having that on board and so accessible I feel that Cash Money will be able to help me reach an audience that I never had. Given that we have these different genres of music over here at Cash Money, I definitely believe that can help expand my audience. I’d like to help bring the Hollywood side to Cash Money. I have a new movie with Ice Cube and I’m in and out of Hollywood so in a way it’s a win-win for me and the label.

AllHipHop.com: Looking at the acting side of your career, are there any other movies besides the Ice Cube one coming out?

Bow Wow: Right now the big thing is just Lottery Ticket with Ice Cube which I’m going to start shooting in October. Right after that I plan on releasing some singles. I’m already in the studio recording with Cool and Dre but right now I’m just messing around. I’m going to officially drop something in the fall so expect something big from me.

AllHipHop.com: On a side note, the Chris Brown/Rihanna incident is back in the news because of the Larry King interview. You were one of the first artists to come forward in with him and you were even in a youtube video with him afterwards. What is your take on how the situation is progressing?

Bow Wow: Chris is my brother. I hold him down. Even on the Larry King interview he spoke about his real friends and I’ve always been there for him. Right now I feel like the situation is kind of old. And I feel like I can speak for Chris’ fans when I say we just want to see him do what he is good at, and known for doing, which is entertaining. He’s in the studio working hard. He’s got his head up high. I speak to him every other day and it’s cool. We understand the circumstance and we’ll deal with him but Chris will overcome everything. He’s grinding right now and these things will only make him stronger. He’s gonna turn all the negative energy into positive energy.

AllHipHop.com: Let’s move from that relationship over to yours. You’ve been linked with a few people, most notably Ciara and Angela Simmons, so what’s going on in the personal life now?

Bow Wow: As of right now I am totally dedicated to my career. For me it is all about music, studio, and acting. I can’t tell you the last time I went to the club or anything. It’s only about shows, the studio, or reading a script. I feel like I have a lot to prove signing with Cash Money and I don’t have time to be running around with chicks and being on blog sites. I have no room for errors. I have no room for f**k ups. I signing with one of the greatest teams and I feel I need to work hard to be apart of it. I’m only 22 so I have a long career ahead of me and I’m married to music.

AllHipHop.com: Can you elaborate more on the situation that happened with “I’m A Flirt”? Was it your record or R. Kelly’s record? It appeared to be R Kelly’s record.

Bow Wow: Exactly. That’s what I’m saying. I delivered the record. I told them this would be my second single. I told them this would be a number one record. They laughed and told me that it wasn’t going to work. Really…even before I was signed Columbia Records had some issues with R. Kelly. It was some business issues where I guess R. Kelly didn’t get paid for a track or at least that’s what I heard. The only reason Kellz went out of his way and did that record was for me. I dropped my verse. The label didn’t like it because they wanted something more pop. Kellz called me up and said he loved the record and wanted it for his Double Up album.

He said he would keep me on it and give me the points. I said cool, as long as I got to keep my writing credit. That’s what we did because I didn’t want to record to go to waste either. So I gave it to Kellz, Kellz did it, and the next thing you know it’s a number one record. Just like I told Columbia. That was just me knowing me, knowing my music, and knowing where I needed to be and they could not see eye to eye. That was four years ago that they dropped the ball on that record. They dropped the ball on the Face Off project [collaboration with Omarion]. Even though we did do 500,000 on that project I still feel like a ball was dropped on the radio side. It has been like this every album. Every album is nonstop going through s**t and I just got tired of it.

AllHipHop.com: You had the Face Off album you had with Omarion. As you move over to Cash Money he is leaving Young Money. Any insight as to why that is occurring?

Bow Wow: As of right now I’m signed to Cash Money. As far as O’s situation, I have no idea. I wish him the best of luck. That’s my dude. I heard some of the music and I just wish him the best. I try not to get too involved in other artist’s situations.

AllHipHop.com: Now, when you started out your name was Kid Gangsta. Then you became Lil Bow Wow. Now you go by Bow Wow and you’re talking about using your real name in an album title. Are you trying to totally shed the Bow Wow image?

Bow Wow: I thought about it. I’ll say it. I was thinking about naming the album “Who is Shad Moss?” I want people to get familiar with who I am. I mean, people know my real name because when I do movies I go by it. That’s because I like to keep the movies and the music separate. We’ll see about the album title. I might just call it my name.

AllHipHop.com: Cash Money and Young Money both have an extensive rooster which includes artists like Lil Wayne, Drake, and Nicki Minaj. With so many people coming out of that system when can we expect to hear an album from you?

Bow Wow: Oh, I don’t want to put my album out until next year. I told Baby that I felt like the New Jack City II album was rushed and he agreed. He told me the same thing I said earlier. I didn’t need to put out an album. I didn’t need any money. They needed to put out an album. They needed money. He knew it. So if it takes me a year…if it takes me two years..I’m not putting out an album until its right. I know what I’m capable of doing. This situation is going to prove that Columbia was wrong and just didn’t know what they were doing. Cash Money likes to win and they are not going to put out anything that is not a winner.

AllHipHop.com: Do you feel Cash Money will help you evolve from child star to more of an adult rapper?

Bow Wow: I think that is all up to me. It’s a look but it all starts with me and what I need to do as an artist. There are different things that I need to do, such as picking the right movies, in order to help me get to that point. I definitely believe I will get there but I am not going to depend on the label for a look. I’m just looking to make good music where people can hear the maturity and growth. That’s why I’m doing the youtube’s and dropping the mixtapes so people can see more of me and get use to the growth. I think it all starts off with the person getting the respect so that’s what I’m going for in whatever I do.

The situation has me just as excited as my fans and I’m just as anxious as the people who say it might not work. The one thing I can say about Baby is that he is a very intelligent dude when it comes to music. They do not like to lose so please believe that if it ain’t right then it ain’t coming out. And hopefully I’ll be able to bring more to the label.
