Barack Obama First African-American President Of U.S.; Rappers React

With sixty-percent of the votes counted, Barack Obama has made history, becoming the first African-American President of United States of America.

 

He is the 44th man to hold the highest office in American government. The Democratic candidate has carried at least 297 Electoral College votes, 27 more than needed to be declared President.

 

Within less than an hour, that projected number jumped to 338 votes for President-Elect Barack Obama, versus Republican candidate John Mc Cain’s 155.

 

“If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dreams of our founders are alive in our time, who still questions the power of out democracy, tonight is your answer,” the President-Elect stated to supporters who had waited for hours in Chicago’s Grant Park for just this moment.

 

Shortly after the announcement, McCain addressed his supporters in his home state of Arizona, informing them that he had just concluded a conversation in which he congratulated his opponent.

 

“I won’t spend a moment of the future wondering what might have been,” said Senator McCain during his concession speech. “This campaign was, and will remain, the great honor of my life. My heart is filled with nothing but gratitude for the experience and to the American people for giving me a fair hearing before deciding that Senator Obama and my old friend Senator Joe Biden should have the honor of leading us for the next four years. I wish Godspeed to the man who was my opponent, and will now be my President.”

 

Exit polls across the country indicate that the largest constituency contributing to Senator Obama’s victory are 18-35 year olds who are brand loyal to Hip-Hop culture.

 

“The vision of the Hip-Hop generation and its young people is in full and glorious effect tonight,” Russell Simmons told AllHipHop.com. “While many older Americans, who marched and struggled so hard so Senator Obama could run for president of the United States never dared to believe in his candidacy’s real potential, young people, particularly the hip-hop community, had faith and their imagination became our reality.”

 

The major television networks are all reporting that in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, Wisconsin and Connecticut, 18-29 year olds voted in record numbers, choosing Barack Obama as their next president.

 

“This is the proudest day of my life,” exclaimed Sean “Diddy” Combs to AllHipHop.com shortly after the announcement.

 

This year, first time voters made up 11% of the millions of voters who cast a ballot either way.

 

“I just thank God that I am here today to see this,” free speech/rap pioneer Luther Campbell told AllHipHop.com. “I knew this day was coming the first day I went to jail, when I was told white kids were buying my songs, I knew this day would come. I am so happy me and my wife gave to him [Obama] from day one. Today there is no more black and white in the U.S.A. We are one.”

 

Early poll results indicated that more than 45 million voters elected the new president.

 

“Americans we did it,” an excited Killer Mike told AllHipHop.com. “We put aside fear, racist ideals and bigotry and we fulfilled an American dream. We fulfilled Martin’s dream, a dream in which a nation of one group [that] was brought here shackled in servitude [and] has produced a man with the character to unify a struggling nation. A nation of former slaves and slave masters, a nation of former and current immigrants. He will be what Roosevelt, Kennedy and Lincoln were: a unifier for this great nation we call America. In the words of that great American philosopher Don King, ‘God Bless America, Baby!’”

Illa J: Yancey Boys (Album Review)

 

Often times it’s difficult for a youngster to let their star shine beyond that of their more celebrated and successful parent or older sibling without comparisons. Illa J, younger brother of the late MC/producer J Dilla, wants to prove that theory wrong with his Yancey Boys (Delicious Vinyl).

 

Consisting of fourteen tracks, the album is produced entirely by Dilla. Although Jay Dee’s legacy is heard and felt throughout the entire album, it’s sometimes difficult to tell if you’re listening to Hip-Hop or R&B. Nonetheless, it’s still a fresh sound found on the disc.

 

The album opens with the jazzy “Timeless” followed by the more up-tempo “We Here”. One thing that is immediately noticeable on the album is that Illa does a lot of his own vocals which is complimentary to some of the tracks.

 

Narrated by Frank Nitti, “Alien Family”, introduces the young artist as well as points out that the Yancey family are natural born singers. He also describes Jay Dee and Illa J as both having an alien-like sense of rhyming.

 

Despite the fact that his brother produced the album made up of several uniquely orchestrated tracks, Illa adds his own flare which allows you to enjoy the album based on his own individual merits and not that of his brother’s. The laid-back electric organs heard on “Strugglin” helps tell the tale of a struggling artist and how they must hustle the hardest to carve their spot in Hip-Hop. Other noteworthy titles include “Showtime” and “Swagger” which are both bump-worthy singles as the mellow vibes felt on each puts the listener in a mesmerizing trance.

 

Overall each track blends well into each other, and Illa displays his diversity from rhyming to vocals; which actually doesn’t sound horribly bad. While Yancey Boys isn’t breaking any new barriers, it is the start of what might be a promising career.

Green Party VP Candidate Hosts Hip-Hop Event

Green Party Vice Presidential nominee/Hip-Hop activist Rosa Clemente will be joined by a variety of rappers tonight (November 4) in Manhattan, to celebrate her run for Vice President of the United States.

 

Clemente is a longtime journalist/Hip-Hop activist, who’s name can be seen on ballots nationwide alongside Green Party Presidential nominee Cynthia McKinney.

 

Talib Kweli, Rebel Diaz, N.Y. Oil, Hakim of Channel Live, Immortal Technique and others are slated to attend the event, which takes place at bar SB3 on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

 

The event starts at 8:00 PM, while performances start at 11:00 PM and close out Clemente’s celebration.

 

“This journey would not have been possible without many of you,” Clemente told AllHipHop.com. “At 11:00 pm I will address all my supporters and we will have an old fashioned Hip Hop Jam, until the break of dawn!”

The Green Party, which is the largest third largest political party in the United States, nominated the McKinney/Clemente ticket in July of 2008.

 

The nomination was also significant because it marks the first time two women of color led a major party’s charge for the Oval Office.

 

U.S. Rep. McKinney (D-GA), is also a champion of Hip-Hop who once introduced a bill urging the government to release any secret files on slain rapper, Tupac Shakur.

For anyone who didn’t see it, it summed up how every  person should feel today. Many people died and were falsely imprisoned  for us to have the right and privilige to be a part of today. David Banner Warns Of Electronic Voting; Volunteers In Jackson

One hour after David Banner cast his vote Jackson, Mississippi, the rapper/producer is issuing a warning to the millions around the country who will be doing the same throughout the day.

 

The Jackson native, who remains an active political voice in the Hip-Hop community, wants to remind voters to be aware of possible malfunctions as they vote, especially in states with electronic ballots.

 

“I got a report from a lady that I’m standing by, who’s like they got some screens that’s sensitive, when you touch them, they come up Republican automatically,” he told AllHipHop.com as he was leaving his local polling place. “People need to make sure that they watch and make sure that when they’re voting, it’s going in as it’s supposed to go in.”

 

While he did note that only one person had reported this problem to him directly, Banner’s caution echoes what several have been saying since the early voting process began two weeks ago in some states.

 

According to Virginia-based political consulting firm Election Data Services, Inc., electronic voting systems are being used in more than twice the number of counties nationwide, than in local elections in 2006.

 

This year, more than 55 million voters in 3,100 counties will cast their ballots electronically, representing about 33 percent of the 169 million registered voters.

 

With his own ballot cast, Banner will spend the rest of the afternoon delivering water and other comforts to those waiting in line with the help of his cousin, a first time voter.

 

Early news reports indicate that today is already shaping up to be one of the largest general election turnouts in Mississippi’s history, with lines at one Jackson poll backed up nearly 100 yards even before doors had opened.

 

Banner also urges citizens around the country to remember that Election Day is only one step in the process.

 

“Barack put something in people that they believe [in],” he told AllHipHop.com. “And that’s why it’s really, really important that we remember that this process is bigger than just one person. However this thing turns out, we gotta continue this fight. It’s not just for today. Barack isn’t going to be our savior. He is the door opener for us to be able to do what we have to do as citizens.”

 

Just hours ago, both Presidential candidates exercised their rights as United States citizens and cast their respective ballots.

 

Senator John McCain returned to his home state of Arizona to cast his vote before continuing on a last minute campaign push across the Southwest.

 

Senator Barack Obama and his wife Michelle wear among the first to vote at their neighborhood polling place in Chicago this morning.

 

Banner urged people to continue to be politically active long after the elections are over.

 

“The pressure isn’t solely on him [Barack], it’s on each and every individual. It’s on me, it’s on you,” Banner continued. “Even the whole tone of how I approach my music and how I approach my community and the things I want to do, it has to be taken to another level. People have to remember that Obama has eight years to clean up. So we just have to keep in mind that it’s gonna be a process. We already see what happens if a person like McCain wins. We been going through that for eight years.”

AHH Stray News: Jay-Z’s Rocawear Profitable During Tough Economy

Hip-Hop apparel brand Rocawear helped its parent company Iconix Brand Group post a better-than-expected quarterly profit, despite a sluggish economy and a tough U.S. retailing market. Iconix, which bought Rocawear from Jay-Z in 2007 for $204 million dollars, earned over $18.3 million dollars for the third quarter of 2008. According to Iconix CEO Neil Cole, Jay-Z’s direct involvement with Rocawear helped boost the company’s earnings, as did growing sales from the company’s London Fog brand of clothing. According to Cole, the two brands were the “two biggest standouts in the quarter.” Iconix also owns brands like Candie’s, Joe Boxer, Starter and OP. and Rocawear. Rocawear also recently debuted its first fragrance, 9IX Rocawear.

Q-Tip: The Catalog

Today, November 4th, Q-Tip drops The Renaissance, his 8th in the new Tribe edition. Sure the album is only his second proper album, but anything Q-Tip affiliated is essentially A Tribe Called Quest. “I would never put produced by Q-Tip on this even though I did all this,” says The Abstract about his production imprint. “I felt like I should never be bigger than the group. I really wanted to build something with the brand, with the Tribe. Make it feel like something you were a part of, everyone was a part of Tribe.”If your math is still a little fuzzy, the eight total comes from five A Tribe Called Quest albums (including the astounding pair, Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders), his first solo, Amplified, the shelved Kamaal/The Abstract project and now the tardy, but nevertheless critically touted, The Renaissance via Motown/Universal Records.Much can and has been said about Q-Tip and his contribution to the Hip-Hop cannon. He and his Native Tongue cronies are certainly direct antecedents to the contemporary crop of genre advancing supa MC’s. Whether established (Common, Mos Def, Kanye West, and Lupe Fiasco too) or fledgling (Pac D##, U-N-I, Blu), they all owe at least a nod to The Abstract.With that in mind, we handed Q-Tip LPs and 12” singles (yes, vinyl) from his sizeable catalog and asked him to expound on their creation. AllHipHop.com: A lot of producers go back to the album because of the way the tracks are put together. Like how the snares are hitting, the depth of the samples. It was like a step above everyone else’s records at that time.Q-Tip: I know when I hear it now, I want to get back in and remaster this thing. I hear things on it that could have been better. I know the thing that inspired the sound on this album was Straight Outta Compton. We had heard that when we dropped our first one and they dropped their first one, N.W.A. We were like, “Damn,” we kind of wanted to go back.I was just like, okay, I’ve got to approach this next album with the sonics to f**k with them n****s. Because it was just so hard and so dope. I mean we just used to bump Straight Out of Compton like crazy. That was the impetus for the sound on this. It’s funny because when I saw Dre afterwards, he was like this s**t made The Chronic the way it did. It was interesting that it related to him that way. But this was good times man. Q-Tip: I feel like with “Scenario” we was definitely f**kin with each other. We was hanging out with each other. Today, I think when you hear collaborations, dudes look at it like a business venture. Dudes be in their studios, and they e-mail verses to n****s. So it’s no real studio time. Back then, we was in the studio together. Got like a dime bag, got an eighth of something, put it in the air, vibe in the studio. Just do it, that’s how it was. Crazy. When we did this, I just felt like the music would definitely be listened to at night. I felt like, “Nighttime is busy, it’s words to Aunt Kizzy til’ the time we get down.” I would make beats all night. Crack morning. It just seemed, the ground for us to be creative. The singles off was “Award Tour,” which is still one of my favorite rap songs. Love this song. [looking “Award Tour” single’s cover] This picture was actually taken at a showcase we did, it was us and The Beatnuts at the Palladium in New York City. And nobody had heard any of the new s**t. I remember Puff was there and Biggie was there. So, we were just, you know, good in New York. We were like, “Y’all wanna hear some new s**t?” It was like 2,000 people. They were like “Yeah!” And it got real quiet. I swear to God it got quiet. I was like, “Aiight let’s go.” And we hit, “Oh My God.” N****s, was just like, “Oh, S**T!” I saw people in the crowd looking like, mouthing that. We mounted it, because we thought “Oh My God” was going to be the first single. We didn’t even know this one [“Award Tour”] was going to make the album. Rap Hook Master Kokane Returns With New Album

West Coast hook master Kokane is preparing a brand new album featuring a number of notable artists, representatives for the rapper told AllHipHop.com.

 

The new album, titled Back To The Future, features guest appearances from Kurupt, Daz, Jadakiss, Bootsy Collins, Cameo, Tina Marie, Crooked I, Devin The Dude, Joe Budden and others.

 

For production, the rapper/singer has linked with Meech Wells, son of legendary Motown singer Mary Wells, Knucklehead, John Silva and A. “G-Dub” Geiser of from the famed High Powered Productions camp.

 

Kokane has been a part of the West coast rap scene for over 20 years and to his credit, has appeared on over 1800 songs throughout his 20-plus year career in the business.

 

The gangster rap crooner has roots in the music industry as well, as he is the song of famed Motown composer Jerry Long, who helped author hits like “Ball of Confusion,” “Just My Imagination,” “Still Waters Run Deep,” and others.

 

Kokane was also signed to Eazy E’s Ruthless Records in 1991 and has contributed to albums from Eazy E, N.W.A., Above The Law, Snoop Dogg and many others.

 

He later went on to sign with Snoop Dogg’s Dogghouse Records and contributed vocals to nine of the 19 tracks on Snoop’s 2000 album Tha Last Meal.

 

No release date is available for the upcoming album.

50 Cent Teams With Bette Midler to Launch Community Garden

Despite their different styles of music, rapper 50 Cent and actress/singer Bette Midler have found a common cause.

 

According to reports, the pair have joined forces to open the Baisley Park Community Garden, a new outdoor children’s learning garden located in the rapper’s hometown of Queen’s, New York.

 

Midler and 50 Cent were on hand yesterday (November 3) to cut the ribbon for the garden, a joint project between the rapper’s G-Unity Foundation and Midler’s New York Restoration Project (NYRP).

 

For 50 Cent, the motivation in using his influence and foundation to help Midler stemmed from providing a safe place for area youth.

 

“It’s exciting. It was an opportunity for me to do something for the kids in the community,” the entertainer said about the garden, which will be located at 117-19 165th Street. “This is a hell of a opportunity, for me to collaborate with Bette. We’re gonna make it happen.”

 

Founded by Midler in 1995, the NYRP is dedicated towards reclaiming, restoring, and developing neglected New York City parks and community by partnering with various individuals, community-based groups and public agencies.

 

The opening of the 15,120 square foot garden comes more than two years after the nonprofit organization received a $150,000 grant from the G-Unity Foundation in July 2006.

 

Midler, an admitted 50 Cent fan, revealed how excited she was to have 50 Cent and the G-Unity foundation involved with the garden as she recalled how challenging it was for the NYRP to find supporters for the project.

 

“We looked all over town for a group that was interested in these sort of things,” Midler said. “We found G-Unity, which is Curtis’ foundation. They were interested. This garden is mainly for kids, and they do a lot of things with kids.”

 

Located within a community that includes more than 52,000 children, Baisley Park features only five percent of the recommended amount of outdoor/open space, according to Community Board 12 in Queens.

 

The garden’s launch is the latest community endeavor for the G-Unity Foundation, which provides grants to nonprofit organizations that focus on improving the quality of life for low-income and underserved communities.

Nearly a year of debates, controversy, and unexpected twists has culminated with today’s record-breaking Election Day (November 4), where millions of voters will decide the next president of the United States.

 

With less than 24 hours before the race is decided, various Hip-Hop artists told AllHipHop.com in exclusive statements, that they are continuing to push their fans to vote.

 

Despite living in the hotly contested battleground state of Florida, Rick Ross dismissed concerns that Republican nominee John McCain could pull an upset.

 

“I don’t even think its close this year,” Ross told AllHipHop. “Obama is gonna take it home!”

 

However, Ice Cube and T.I. feel the election is far from being in the bag for either candidate, and everyone must brave the long polling lines to make sure they complete their civic duty.

 

“It’s a very big election and everyone should participate,” Cube detailed to AllHipHop.com. “And you better be voting for Barack!”

 

“It’s still a tight race so everyone needs to fulfill their obligation to themselves and their country,” T.I. added.

 

Rising Brooklyn rapper Maino, who has turned around his life and career around since a 10-year jail sentence in the 90’s, learned that like T.I., he was still eligible to vote for the first time.

 

“I’m all into it [the election],” Maino explained. “It’s my first time voting. I’m off parole, [and] I just found out I can do it, and I’ll be down there [voting].”

 

For many, the fallout from the Bush administration’s economic bailout is a topic that hasn’t been discussed enough in the last few days.

 

Chicago star Common, one of the first rappers to express public support for Obama, feels that most undecided voters should look at the recent Wall Street bailout and what policies brought the country to this point.

 

“This country needs help,” Common reasoned. “The economic bailout is just another example of how the corporations and rich people have exploited the country itself.”

 

Big Boi from Outkast expressed disgust at how originally the U.S. bank bailout would have given the people culpable in the crisis free reign over $700 billion in taxpayer money.

 

“You see they were about to go on vacation and get massages,” Big Boi quipped. “They should’ve given that money back to the people. And that’s why we need a change in the new president.”

 

Warner Music Group Vice President Kevin Liles cautioned people from putting too much emphasis on their personal opinions of Obama and McCain.

 

Instead, Liles emphasized that everyone’s vote should hinge on which candidate is better qualified to lead the country and reverse the extensive economic and foreign policies issues America faces.

 

“Politics is one thing, but I’m concerned about everyday people. This is about more than the election, it’s about every single day of your life,” he explained. “From gas to healthcare [and] Hip-Hip has done a great job [speaking on these issues]. We know what we need to do today and that Barack Obama is the best person for the job.”

November 4: Where You Want to Be

Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America’s improbable experiment in democracy.

Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787.

The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by this nation’s original sin of slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least 20 more years, and to leave any final resolution to future generations.

Of course, the answer to the slavery question was already embedded within our Constitution — a Constitution that had at its very core the ideal of equal citizenship under the law; a Constitution that promised its people liberty, and justice, and a union that could be and should be perfected over time.

And yet words on a parchment would not be enough to deliver slaves from bondage, or provide men and women of every color and creed their full rights and obligations as citizens of the United States. What would be needed were Americans in successive generations who

were willing to do their part — through protests and struggle, on the

streets and in the courts, through a civil war and civil disobedience

and always at great risk — to narrow that gap between the promise of

our ideals and the reality of their time. This was one of the

tasks we set forth at the beginning of this campaign — to continue the

long march of those who came before us, a march for a more just, more

equal, more free, more caring and more prosperous America. I

Surely you’re reading this while voting or while anticipating your voting or while reveling in the glow of that wonderful feeling that comes from voting and fulfilling your civic duties. Anyway, this column is about kicks and though sports figures aren’t the usual suspects when it comes to making political statements—who has MJ ever endorsed besides Phil Knight?—Tracy McGrady and Kevin Garnett are kind of sort subtly making a statement people should get to the polls. During their games today (Houston Rockets vs. Boston Celtics) the perennial All-Stars will be wearing customized versions of their Adidas TS Commanders with messages on the side [Garnett: “Embrace Change, Vote ‘08”] and rear [McGrady “Change Is Needed, Vote ‘08”] of their respective sneakers. No, they’re not broadcasting who to vote for—ahem, Obama, ahem—but are encouraging people to vote, period. Which you did/are going to do. Right?These Air Force 1’s with big images of Obama face splashed on both sides were designed by Van20 and the photos were floating around earlier this year. I ain’t mad at them, at all. Not too sure about these (must we be walking all over Obama already?) but I’ll post the pic off of g.p. Jennifer Hudson Lays Slain Family To Rest

Academy Award winning actress Jennifer Hudson and her sister Julia were joined in mourning by close friends and family as they paid their last respects to their mother, brother and Julia’s son yesterday (November 3).

 

The private service came one day after a public memorial was held in Chicago for 57-year-old Darnell Donnerson, her 29-year-old son Jason Hudson and 7-year-old grandson Julian King.

 

Among those present were Reverend Jesse Jackson and Chicago mayor Richard Daley, who eulogized the singer’s slain relatives.

 

Multi-platinum singer Fantasia Barrino concluded the services with Gospel classic “Your Grace and Mercy,” singing directly to Jennifer at one point, the Chicago Tribune reports.

 

The most touching point of the ceremony came when Jennifer Hudson approached the caskets and kissed her mother, who the Secret Lives of Bees star credited as her biggest supporter that encouraged her to pursue American Idol.

 

On Sunday, South Side Chicago’s Missionary Baptist Church was the site of the public memorial, which neither of the sisters attended, Jennifer’s publicist said.

 

Authorities discovered the bodies of the mother and son on October 24 ago at the home they shared with Julia.

 

Her son’s body was discovered three days later, in Jason Hudson’s abandoned Chevrolet Suburban.

 

The Suburban was the SUV described in the Amber Alert that was issued for the child moments after he was reported missing and hours after the gruesome murders of his mother and uncle.

 

Late Friday night (October 31), the Chicago Police Department confirmed the .45 caliber Sig Sauer handgun discovered a block away from where Julian King was found was the murder weapon used to kill all three.

 

The gun was identified by unfired bullets, which matched the shell casings found at the scene of the crime.
