Jena 6 Member Hospitalized Over Alleged Suicide Attempt

A member of the Louisiana-based Jena Six is being treated at a local hospital after shooting himself in the chest.

The Associated Press reports that Mychal Bell injured himself Monday night (December 29) at his grandmother’s house in Monroe.

According to a police report, the shooting was reported at 7:40 p.m. At the time of the incident, Bell was staying at his grandmother, Rosie Simmons,’ home as his mother, Melissa Bell, arrived for a visit.

Melissa Bell told authorities that she and Simmons heard a gunshot coming from Mychal’s room and found him on his bed with a wound to his upper right chest.

Despite recovering a .22-caliber handgun, police were not clear on Tuesday (Dec. 30) as to who owned the gun.

Bell’s wound was not life-threatening, authorities said. Louis Scott, a lawyer who represented Bell and five other Jena High School students during the Jena Six case in 2006, revealed the shooting stemmed from his former client being upset that his recent arrest for shoplifting would ruin his dream of playing football for the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

“When it was broadcast that he was charged with shoplifting he just felt that the whole year had been wasted and that he had worked all of that time for nothing,” Scott said.

The police report on Monday’s shooting noted that the shoplifting arrest eventually took its toll on Mychal Bell.

Mrs. Simmons and Melissa Bell disclosed to police that “Mychal had made comments over the past two days that, because of the current media attention he had because of the shoplifting arrest, he didn’t feel like he could live anymore.”

Bell was arrested on Christmas Eve after he allegedly tried to steal several shirts and a pair of jeans from a department store.

The 18-year-old was later found hiding under a car after fleeing from a security guard and an off-duty police officer who tried to detain him.

Prior to the alleged shoplifting, Bell was known as one of the Jena Six. The group, comprised of black teenagers, garnered headlines after being charged with attempted murder for the beating of a white classmate at Jena High School in 2006.

Charges from the case, which centered on nooses being displayed at the school, resulted in national outrage and criticism that led to a civil rights march involving more than 20,00 people who traveled to Jena for the protest.

Although charges for all members of the Jena Six were later reduced, Bell was sentenced to 18 months as a ward of the state after pleading guilty to juvenile charges and moved to Monroe to be placed in foster care.

He was released from state supervision on Dec. 4.

Bell, who spent 10 months in prison awaiting trial after the 2006 arrest, is scheduled to graduate from Carroll High School in the spring.

At the top of our list, B.O.B.’s career has surpassed his own expectations in 2008.  Upon signing to T.I.’s Grand Hustle Records, B.O.B. appeared on stages all over the country as well as garnering the attention of the industry with his intellectual diction as he went flow-for-flow with some of Hip-Hop’s biggest names.

“Since the Breeding Ground article, in the past year I have been on the Rock the Bells” tour with Mos Def and Redman, along with the Hip-hop Live Tour with David Banner and Talib Kweli. Plus, I have placements in video game scores such as Grand Theft Auto 4, and Fight Night. Not to mention, I have my music placed in TV commercials by Nintendo with a few others on the way. And I have been constantly improving on my craft with track placements on TI’s #1 album, Paper Trail and Big Boi’s upcoming album among others.

“Right now check out my new mixtape Who The F#*k Is BoB with DJ Scream and my new online video “Autotune” [See Below].

“Thank you for all of your continued support and I look forward to bringing you that real music from now until infinity!”

Artist: Nicki MinajHometown: Brooklyn, New YorkLabel: Young MoneyMusic: Nicki Minaj & Red Cafe “I Feel Free”  Sporting some hot lyrics along with her fine looks, the sexy and skilled Nicki Minaj made a loud splash into the game with her highly popular videos. Now following a new direction, Nicki has added singing to her arsenal of musical attributes. Thus displaying the ever-extending growth she is prepared to endure to be the best at her craft. “This is an extremely exciting time for me and my music because I’ve decided that the business of music won’t inhibit my passion for making music.  Although rapping is what people have grown to know me for, I’m continuing to explore my talents as a singer and my love for writing music. Like me; my music is multi-faceted and is an evolutionary process. I am being highly sought after by both independent and major record labels, but I have not made a commitment as of yet. It is essential that I get the right deal not just a deal.””I want to remain in control of my destiny and to have longevity in this business! Currently, I have new manager, Debra Antney, CEO of Mizay Entertainment, and I am in the studio recording my first album which will feature some R&B and pop songs. In addition, I am working on a new mixtape due out on Christmas. So watch out for me to do bigthings and break out in ’09.” Artist: Joell OrtizHometown: Brooklyn, New YorkLabel: Koch RecordsMusic:  Joell Ortiz Ft. Joe Budden “Move One” Joell Oritiz’s future seemed like an MC’s dream come true. After signing to legendary producer Dr. Dre’s Aftermath label, the world seemed like it was his for the taking.  Unfortunately, he found the shelf, like most artists on that label.  But as luck would have it, Joell was soon to find a new home with Koch records.  This time his stay at the label looks more permanent than a one off album. The Brooklyn MC is out to continue what he started.“I recently signed a new deal with Koch.  The album is coming out sick!  I will be giving AllHipHop some exclusives for ya’ll shortly. For the past 2 years I have been traveling all over the world doing shows, because a big booking agent saw my set at a Breeding Ground showcase.  He gave my manager his card  after the show and it’s been on [ever] since.  I am grateful to AllHipHop for giving me that shot and I hope other new artists take the opportunity to perform.” Artist: Snype LifeHometown: Yonkers, NYLabel: D-BlockMusic: Styles P Ft. Snyp Life and Bully “Ride Or Die”From the home of The Lox, this street savvy MC earned his stripes with the Yonkers crew D-Block and has landed a deal with the crew that encouraged Yonkers to become a household name in Hip-Hop.  Synpe Life is now ready to make sure his name is the next big name out of Y.O.”Well, it’s a blessing for one to even get in this game after so many years on the underground scene, and to be  apart of one of Hip-Hop’s elite groups [The LOX] is an honor, besides the fact that we all come from the same hood. As far as what to expect from my album, it’s gonna kinda be like a mood swing album. Meaning, I’m so versatile as an artist, I’m gonna be tapping into many different zones-stuff for the kids, something to party to, everyday hood politics for those cats.””[The] difference with me verses the average artist is I grew up with this Hip-Hop game and they just grew on to it. My album will show you what that means! Far as upcoming projects, we just wrapped up two mixtapes, [titled] D-Block Presents Call Of Duty and the other [untitled] will be out top of 2009.””Speaking of 09, check for the D Block compilation, No Security. Also my appearance on Jada’s album The Last Kiss followed by my own personal next mixtape Roadkill Hi-Way Miles and a slue of DVD releases.”

Artist: Tabi BonneyHometown: Washington, D.C.Label: TBAMusic: Tabi Bonney “Rich Kids”This Washington D.C. emcee has a style that has made him very unique in todays rap scene.  Bron in West African and raised in the states, influenced by Hip-Hop, Tabi life is as original as his sound.  With buzz of a major label closing in on this artistic gem Tabi has range outside of music.  From his artistic videos to his clothing line, Tabi is a true entrepreneur in this competitive rap environment.

“I did a collaboration with Good Charlottee and Curren$y. Working on a song or two with Cisco Adler and then Murs shortly after that. All of this is a result from other artist/celebrities just being straight up fans.”

“Bout to shoot a succession of videos within the next month and a half that you will more than likely see on national networks…what other TRUE indie artist can say that?”

“[My] EP series is slated for digital distribution with a limited number of physical copies available at appearances, shows, boutiques.”

“The clothing line Bonney Runway is doing extremely well. We are online based for right now (www.bonneyrunway.com). Will hit select boutiques by summer ’09.”

Now let us take a look at the top unsigned artist that we see to be the bright stars for the coming year. Artist: SkyzooHometown: Brooklyn, New YorkLabel: Independent Music: Skyzoo Ft. Sha Stimuli and Sav Killz “BK Renaissance”His name has been buzzing in the streets of NYC for years, now Skyzoo has been getting big label attention as well as respect from his peers as well as rap veterans like EPMD.  Skyzoo has continually led the pack of unsigned artists by making some of the hottest music available.”Since being featured in the Breeding Ground, I’ve been touring the US and China, releasing music on the streets and the ‘net, and remixing previous mixtapes of mine for digital distribution sites, like iTunes and Rhapsody, all while working on two new projects at once. I’m working on a new mixtape entitled, The Power Of Words, which will serve as a pre-up to my debut album The Salvation. The album includes production from 9th Wonder, Pete Rock, Nottz, Needlz, Illmind, Best Kept Secret, and more. 2009 is gonna be a groundbreaking year for sure!” Artist: Mickey FactzHometown: Bronx, New YorkLabel: IndependentMusic: Mickey Factz Ft. Fresh Daily and Naledge “Stop What Ya Doin”

From gracing the cover of some well respected magazines to just being able to rock the crowd, Bronx breed rapper Mickey Factz has been a breathe of fresh air in an era of rappers being a dime-a-dozen.  Mickey Factz is taking the reins on this new school of rap.

“2009 will be the year of The Digital Messiah. In 2008, I created a mass hysteria online by releasing a song every week and on top of that performing with The Cool Kids all across the country. I’ve had magazine articles in Fader, Spin, Billboard, URB and other magazines. I did the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival this past summer. [My] video made it to MTV and I made the cover of XXL. 2008 was a great year. In 2009 I will be touring a lot more and I’ll also be featured in a commercial.” “My album will be dropping and I’m in talks to releasing some video game sound track music that’s featuring myself — And I’m currently working on a cell phone music distribution opportunity. So, basically I’m going to be taking over all media. It’s about to be really disgusting. As far as the label situation, we’ll see what happens. If the right situation presents itself, then Mickey Factz will be on a label. But [deals] are a dime a dozen, please don’t think for one second that Mickey Factz can’t get a deal. If its not broken, don’t fix it.” Artist: Nina B.Hometown: Brooklyn, New YorkLabel: Ravenel RecordsMusic: “Radio” In the rat race of this rap game, it can feel like an uphill battle but Brooklyn’s Nina B really did finish one of her races, she ran the New York Marathon In 2008!  She continues to speed on the mic but this was one personal achievement she had to accomplish and after a 26 mile marathon, the rap game may seem more like a down hill race for this New York MC. “Since the last time you guys read about me in the Breeding Ground success is abundant and life is good. It’s still Nina B, The Bosstress, Ravenel Records the label, and good music the passion. Maybe you read in the rumor mill that I ran the New York City Marathon. Thanks to Illseed no doubt! But I’d also like you to know I completed it and did so with the help of trainers Sean Wright of Cut Fitness and Lil Cease’s Hard Body Fitness. The experience of a lifetime. I had to raise some money for team for kids.””I’m a major part of the “Women On The Move” movement and I make it my business to inspire who I can where I can. Besides all that, I been touring high schools in NYC with The Life Camp and prisons with Blackhand Ent. Not only do I do my part, I enjoy it.””I spend a lot of my time plotting the lay out of my highly anticipated debut album dropping this year after all. 2000 Nina, also known as 2009) is approaching and I’m doing it big, as I always have. I’m also still hosting Video City. Trying give back to artist on the grind like myself, that’s just me. I’m collaborating with a lot more artist and producers, including producers 6th Sense and The Kickdrums not to mention my director, Scenario.””I’m currently working on my 8th and 9th mixtapes but every time around [it] feels like the first time. So, expect something new for the other rappers to get a little inspiration from. From the clothing sponsors, highlights. features, interviews, blog love, fans and feedback I know I’m doing my thing. All these artist respect Nina B.  I’m still grinding, still performing, recording, and being the genuine official spitter I m always gonna be, but I’m stepping it up and beyond. Besides being highlighted in The Source, I was chosen amongst a handful of other talented artist for B.E.T.s Best of ’08 and it feels good. I just want to be on everybody’s list soon.  Its about time, I’m far from new. I been puttin’ it in.” Artist: RainHometown: Fayetteville, North Carolina / New YorkLabel: IndependentMusic: “Hello”Rumored to be writing for some of the biggest rappers, producers and labels in the game, Rain has been putting out some hot music that has not only gotten attention of the industry but ensured that the streets too are watching. “2008 was great year for me as a person and my emergence as an artist. I put in a lot of hard work and I feel like it’s finally starting to pay off. I’m honored to be chosen along with the other Breeding Ground artists as the next generation of artists to make a positive impact in Hip-Hop. AllHipHop’s Breeding Ground is a spring board new comers and gives an opportunity to show and prove. This whole experience has been a true blessing.”

“Since appearing in AHH Breeding Ground I’ve gotten a chance to work with platinum producers, such as Dr. Dre, Nottz, Sean C & LV, Scram Jones and Don Cannon. I’ve been featured in numerous magazines, websites and DVD’s. I’ve been approached by a few labels regarding a record deal, I’m continuing to work and praying for the best.”

AHH YEAR IN REVIEW: Who Was The King In The Midwest In ’08?

The oft-underestimated Midwest region continued to carve out their own distinct identity with a nice mix of mainstream and underground stars. Chicago elites Kanye West and Common were joined by Lupe Fiasco, who courtesy of the well-received The Cool began to receive recognition as one of the game’s premier young artists.

Detroit’s Hip-Hop scene also gained extensive coverage this year due to a blitz of material from underground emcees Black Milk, Elzhi, Guilty Simpson, Invincible, and Royce Da 5’9.

While the area may never get the same recognition as its counterparts, the Midwest can boast of having arguably the most diverse group of talent throughout the nation.

Kanye West:

The Chicago superstar made massive waves in 2008 through an illustrious world tour, laying beatings on the paparazzi, and a controversial new album sound. Ye’s critically acclaimed Glow In The Dark Tour kicked off in April in Seattle and concluded December 6th in Australia. Backed by an impressive rotating list of stars in Lupe Fiasco, Rihanna, N.E.R.D., Nas, Gnarls Barkley, Chris Brown, and Jay-Z, Kanye completed an exhaustive sixty one shows in total.

In September, West hit the headlines for an arrest at LAX airport following his manhandling of a photographer and subsequent smashing of the man’s camera. Two months later, Kanye was involved in another photographer scuffle, this time in England. Charges were dropped.

In November Kanye dropped 808s & Heartbreak, a risky project showcasing no rapping but singing exclusively done through the auto-tune vocal effect. Ignoring cries of foul from longtime fans and critics, the album debuted #1 on Billboard to the beat of over 450,000 copies.

Add on Kanye’s production work this year for T.I. (“Swagga Like Us”), Lil Wayne (“Comfortable,” “Let The Beat Build”), Jay-Z (“Jockin’ Jay-Z,” “Brooklyn”), The Game (“Angel”), and others, and you have another great year for Mr. West.

Standout Songs:

“Love Lockdown,” “Heartless,”

Lupe Fiasco:

Lupe spent the majority of 2008 riding the success of his critically acclaimed sophomore album The Cool. The crossover appeal of “Superstar” helped the album hit number one on Billboard Rap charts. The March 2008 video release of the poignant “Hip-Hop Saved My Life” pushed the album past gold and secured Lupe his first plaque.

Fiasco also took the time this year to partner with Coca Cola for the Refresh Your Flow Tour, a concert series aimed at empowering teens around the country from thirteen to seventeen years old that are active in their communities.

Next year, Lupe looks to again enthrall Hip-Hop fans with an ambitious three disc album named LupE.N.D. and the debut album from Child Rebel Soldier, a super group featuring Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and Lupe.

Standout Songs:

“Hip-Hop Saved My Life,” “Superstar,” “Paris, Tokyo”

Common:

Another one of Chi-town’s finest makes the list through an impressive collection of accomplishments in film, business, and music. Common secured two high-profile movie roles this year in Wanted (Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman) and Street Kings (Keanu Reeves).

On the business side, the Chicago native signed a contract to promote Microsoft’s Zune MP3 player. This month, Common announced the launching of a new clothing line with Microsoft entitled Softwear. Forbes listed the rapper’s earnings at twelve million, making Common the thirteenth highest grossing Hip-Hop artist of 2008. Common’s latest album, Universal Mind Control, was released on December 9.

Standout Songs:

“Universal Mind Control,” “Announcement”

Black Milk:

Detroit producer / emcee Black Milk kept his prodigious talent all over Hip-Hop’s underground scene throughout 2008. In March, he collaborated with Fat Ray for the well-received album The Set-Up. He followed up by executive producing Elzhi’s breakout sophomore LP The Preface.

This past October saw the release of Milk’s second album Tronic, entirely produced by himself, featuring Royce Da 5’9, Sean Price, Pharoahe Monch, and DJ Premier. In 2009, Milk will kick off the year with Random Axe, a super-group project with Sean Price and Guilty Simpson.

Standout Songs:

“Give The Drummer Sum,” “The Matrix”

Nelly

One of the Midwest’s most reliable hitmakers took his first tumble this year. Four years since his last album, Nelly spent the majority of 2008 trying to get a single to connect with the public. After three lukewarm receptions (“Wadsyaname,” “Party People,” and “Body On Me”), Nelly finally settled on the Jermaine Dupri-produced “Stepped On My J’z.”

Even with a bevy of Hip-Hop heavyweights on the album in Snoop Dogg, Rick Ross, T.I., Pharrell, and LL Cool J, Brass Knuckles debuted with just over 80,000 copies sold and quickly fell out of Billboard’s Top 200 with less than 170,000 records sold to date.

Despite the flop, Nelly remains one of Hip-Hop’s most well known stars. Expect the St. Louis native to bounce back in 2009.

Standout Songs:

“Stepped on My J’z,” “Warrior”

The Verdict:

This was tough but we went with Kanye. Yeah the auto-tune has to go, but Common did us a disservice with U.M.C. Kanye kept us entertained with more of his “I don’t try to be different, I am” antics. Also the production is still top notch kid.

The Top Three: To Be or Not To Be

Message To Jay-Z: Don’t Be Stringer Bell

The opinions expressed in the following editorial do not necessarily reflect the opinion of AllHipHop.com or affiliates. As 2008 draws to a close, we look at probably the prime mover in Hip-Hop and the man generally acknowledged as the premier rapper in the game, Jay-z.  While he didn’t have an album out, he stood at the forefront of moves being made, guest spots on the biggest songs, and of course his power couple marriage to the “hottest chick in the game.”

However outside of the headlines and the dollar signs, there is a more serious matter at hand. The political aspirations, the touring with Mary J. Blige, the cuts with Coldplay, and his seeming abandonment of the underground that put him over ground has led many to rumble that the king is dead, and that lyrically and musically he is a shell of his former self.

In addition, the number of former friends with an axe to grind is climbing in number, from Jaz-O setting Rocawear clothes on fire in front of Marcy, to Deehaven, to Calvin Kline, to Damon Dash and Peedi Crakk, there are just too many mouths to be ignored.

Musically, his last album was high powered and generally unassailable in 2007 but recently…he’s aight but he’s not real.  Early returns from the highly anticipated Blueprint 3, supposedly all Ye, have met with varying criticism from luke warm to straight up wack. Is he finally beginning to show his age as an emcee, or is the answer something even more tragic?

It’s interesting that the ultimate hustler (sorry Dame) should live his life by his street codes, because every truly successful hustler comes to a point where they are on top and the young wolves constantly vying for your spot gets tiresome; where you begin to consider going legit. You won’t be hanging out at inaugurations and chilling with Barack talking about money, cash, and hoes.  Your street talk gets seriously questionable when you’re talking about being worth a half billion dollars. If Jay-z isn’t careful, he’s going to end up like another of our cult icons, the late, great Stringer Bell.

Stringer was respected as cold and calculating and always two steps ahead of everyone else, much like Jay-z is in the game.  While Avon wanted to keep the streets, Stringer was more interested in getting out of the game and turning to legitimate business.  The more he learned and the more he earned, the further away his sensibilities turned from the streets; the less he cared about how his behavior affected the game.

As Stringer got more out of pocket with regards to the game, you knew it wasn’t going to be long before his time came.  No matter how much as viewer you liked his character, how much you respected his acumen, all real dudes know that no one is bigger than the game, and the minute you think you are, your time is ticking.  You can’t make your own rules. You can’t keep stepping over the debris of broken relationships, shattered friendships, and political mistakes.

Stringer made political alignments that backfired like his deal with Clay Davis.  Similarly, Jay-z has been called from many circles on his seemingly politically motivated cosignage of Lil Wayne (a true star in his own right, no disrespect) as the best rapper alive. Recently Pusha T was very vocal about it on the The Road to Till The Casket Drops.  Rappers are getting louder in their protests on a level that we just haven’t heard before.

Eventually, the game exacted its own justice and Stringer was removed from the board by people who he double crossed on his path to the top. As a fan of Jay-z and his legacy in this music, I would like for him not meet the same end in the game.

You can’t play both sides of the field because that’s impossible.  Either you’re in or you’re out of this thing of ours. There is nothing wrong with going out like John Elway after a championship and doing other things with your life.  There’s nothing wrong with going out like Jordan of the Bulls rather than Jordan with the Wizards, not making the playoffs and then fired from the team you supposedly “own.”

You have experienced things in this world that the block has never seen. You tried on Kingdom Come to take things to that direction, but your execution was flawed.  You had the right idea but you put it together without your normal conviction; you didn’t complete the sale.  That doesn’t mean that it wasn’t the right thing to do.

Don’t bother rapping about crack because at this point the Clipse are better than you at that. Don’t bother rapping about the block cause Jeezy, Ross, T.I. and a bunch of others do the whole hood thing better, plus it looks crazy because you have too much money plus you’re a married man. “Hollywood,” and “Beach Chair” are great examples of how you can take it to another level and to a place where more of your contemporaries are not able. American Gangster was dope, but you won’t be inaugurating anyone with that content.

You’re still, for my money, the best rapper alive. However whatever gap there was is being rapidly eroded by Nas, whose Untitled was both daring and inventive.  Even at this stage he’s growing by leaps and bounds artistically. Don’t be Stringer Bell. You’re better than that.  Part of being king is being a leader.  Determining where cultures and people go, not aping what is popular and attaching yourself to it. If you’re the king, it’s not “Swagger Like Us.” It’s swagger like me. Be a leader. Be who you say you are. Anything else is Stringer Bell.  And while it’s a hell of a ride to the top, it’s an unceremonious end.

The Last Word: ‘Twas the Night Before New Year’s

What’s the deal? The end of the year is hours away and once again it’s that time again. With a decrease in the death of US soldiers in Iraq for 2008 and Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich naming Roland Burris to fill Barack Obama’s Senate seat, the year ends on another newsworthy note. And with that comes the second annual ‘Twas the Night Before New Years, another spoof on Clement Clarke Moore’s “The Night Before Christmas.” Shout out to Mr. Moore, whose story was the blueprint, Skillz for providing the inspiration for this with annual Rap Ups, Tyree for coming through in the 11th hour with the feedback and the sounding boards for making 2008 a year of memories. So here it comes…the final Last Word of 2008: ‘Twas the Night Before New Years‘Twas the night before New Years, when all through the houseAmy continued to ramble on about nothing, before she passed outCelebrations in the air, it’s high time for changeBeyoncé has identity issues, which is why she’s acting so strangeSasha’s so Fierce, mobilizing all the “Single Ladies”R. AHH YEAR IN REVIEW: Who Was King Of The West In ’08?

Like their East Coast brethren, it was the veteran West Coast artists that made the most noise in 2008.

The West delivered good to solid LPs from vets Ice Cube, E-40, and Snoop Dogg. The Game also supplied a shining mainstream moment with LAX, the only gold-certified album to come from the Westside this year.

Away from the mainstream, thriving underground scenes have developed. The Bay Area, for example, has numerous acts like Mistah Fab, Ya Boy, Keak Da Sneak, and San Quinn who have thrived simply by making music for their small but devoted audiences. In LA, artists like Planet Asia and Crooked I have done the same while retaining mainstream aspirations.

It’s hard to predict when the West will return to its former glory, but until then the region will sustain as a self-contained unit until the rest of the world is ready to catch back on.

Ice Cube

If you’re looking for an example of a veteran thriving through the independent grind, look no further than the Don Mega. Cube released his political-heavy 8th album Raw Footage in August to rave reviews. To date, the album is on pace to give Cube is second consecutive best-selling independent album of the year.

In addition to working with fellow vets Scarface and Nas (“Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It”), Ice Cube reached out to new school stars The Game (“Get Use To It”) and Young Jeezy (“I Got My Locs On”).

On the film front, Cube starred with Katt Williams in the comedy First Sunday, which opened at number two at the box office and grossed over $37 million. Look for Cube to make more noise in 2009 with a new movie featuring Mike Epps and Young Jeezy called Janky Promoters, and a possible collaboration album with Nas and Scarface.

Standout Songs:

“Gangsta Rap Made Me Do It,” “I Got My Locs On,”

E-40

The King of Slang and Ambassador of the Yay retained his winning ways in 2008 with the release of The Ball Street Journal, 40’s 11th album.

Pushed through his own Sick Wid It Records, 40 Water’s new album featured The Game, Gucci Mane, Snoop Dogg, Too $hort, Bun B, Shawty Lo, Ice-T, and Akon. The album debuted six on Billboard’s Top Hip-Hop albums list.

A hustler since his first album Federal back in 1993, E-40 will keep the Bay Area’s self-contained music scene thriving; recession or not.

Standout Songs:

“Break Ya Ankles,” “Wake It Up”

Crooked I

Long-overlooked emcee Crooked I took it upon himself to capitalize on the hype gained in 2007 through his innovative Hip-Hop Weekly series.

Hip-Hop Weekly, started in April 2007, featured the talented lyricist creating a new song per week over old and new instrumentals, and many times taking requests and shouting out fans on the tracks. The successful series finally concluded in April 2008.

From there, Crooked hits the streets running with three mixtapes: St. Valentine’s Day Bossacre, The Block Obama, and The Block Obama II, which found distribution through iTunes, Amazon, and Rhapsody.

His efforts were duly noted throughout the industry, as now other emcees such as Freeway have adopted modified versions of the Hip-Hop Weekly series to generate their own buzz.

Look for Crooked I to make more noise in 2009 through the super-group Slaughterhouse (Royce Da 5’9, Joell Ortiz, Joe Budden, Crooked I) and his anticipated debut B.O.S.S. (Beginning Of Something Serious).

Snoop Dogg

It’s quite possible that Kanye West got his idea for an auto-tune only album from the success of Snoop’s “Sexual Eruption.” The lead single for Ego Trippin’ was released quietly at the end of 2007, but subsequently blew up over the beginning of this year courtesy of radio and club spins, plus a highly stylized throwback video. The top ten single enabled Snoop’s ninth studio album to debut number three on Billboard’s Top 100 chart.

With a second season of Snoop Dogg’s Fatherhood recently launched on November 30th, Snoop D-O- Double G remains one of Hip-Hop’s brightest crossover stars.

Standout Songs:

“Sexual Eruption,” “Life Of Da Party”

The Game

Compton’s The Game solidified his position as one the West’s biggest artists with LAX, his third and alleged final Hip-Hop album. The LP had a staggering list of guests ranging from rappers like DMX and Raekwon to R&B stars in Chrisette Michele and Bilal. The album earned Game a gold plaque and a narrow miss of receiving his third consecutive #1 LP by less than twelve hundred copies.

Game went on to build his own resume of guest appearances by working with a diverse group of artists in Nas (“Make The World Go Round”), Good Charlotte (“Fight Song Remix”), E-40 (“Pain No More”), and former rival Joe Budden (“The Future”). If The Game is indeed hanging up the microphone, he’s going out on top.

Standout Songs:

“Game’s Pain,” “My Life”

The Verdict:

Even though LAX fell short of its expectations, The Game was still the West’s shining star in 2008.

2008’s Biggest Stories #1: T.I. vs. Jail vs. Shawty Lo

Throughout

2008 T.I. found himself alternating between personal and professional

challenges in the form of promoting a new album, legal woes, and a persistent

Bankhead rival.

On

March 27, T.I., real name Clifford Harris, was sentenced to 1 year in prison

for two counts of illegally possessing machine guns and silencers, and one

count of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Pending

fulfillment of all requirements under his plea agreement, T.I.’s sentence will

commence on March 27, 2009.

In

addition to being fined $100,000, the Atlanta star was required to complete

1000 hours of community service, which included speaking to at-risk youth and

public service announcements.

During

this time, Bankhead rapper Shawty Lo repeatedly baited T.I. with video taunts

and accusations that the Grammy-winning emcee was lying about his past.

The

feud simmered over the summer, most notably at radio station Hot 107.9’s

Birthday Bash. There, Shawty Lo boldly proclaimed over the big screen that “A

New King Is Born,” and featured a video of an inept FBI agent resembling his

rival. T.I. responded in kind during his set by mocking Lo’s trademark dance.

Although

the beef was allegedly squashed various times after sit-downs between the men,

T.I.’s blockbuster album Paper Trail

showcased numerous veiled and blatant jabs at Shawty Lo.

The

tension spilled over into violence at Radio One’s 4th annual Dirty

Awards (November 24).

During

a Shawty Lo performance of “Don’t I,” a direct diss record to T.I.’s camp,

Grand Hustle member Alfamega reportedly hurled a chair onto the stage.

As

other Grand Hustle members attempted to confront Lo’s camp, police moved in to

break up the potential melee.

Later,

T.I. and Lo again met backstage and supposedly agreed to stop any further

derogatory comments against each other. T.I. then publicly on stage reiterated

the feud should end and denounced the violence that had taken place.

The

truce proved short-lived, as T.I. drew the ire of Lo’s entourage while

performing his verse from “Ain’t I.” According to Shawty Lo’s camp, T.I.

allegedly changed lyrics to take some verbal jabs at his rival.

The

police weren’t quick enough this time, as Alfamega allegedly assaulted Shawty

Lo’s brother before being pepper sprayed and jailed along with Grand Hustle

member Big Kuntry.

In

the fallout from the incident, both sides chose to blame the other for another

Hip-Hop awards show being ruined by unnecessary violence.

“I

didn’t go and start nothing. If they rewind the cameras, they’ll see how it

started,” Shawty Lo explained. “I’m a man. I respect every man as a man. If a

man disrespects me, what am I supposed to do?”  T.I. needs to contain his people. We’re not

standing down. I performed my music. I didn’t come to start no beef with him.”

Alfamega

countered by speculating that the months of feuding stems from Shawty Lo being

jealous of T.I.’s success.

“I think [Lo] feels like he ain’t getting his just due,” Alfamega

stated. “I can understand, but God will give you blessings, and your blessings

might not as be as big as the next man. Be thankful for what you got… I’m embarrassed by the

whole situation.”

Since the incident Shawty Lo has made

several videos speaking on the matter, and it appears this feud will continue

well into 2009.
