Fonzworth Bentley Talks Helping Kanye West Create “Waves” Featuring Chris Brown

THE INDUSTRY VETERAN SPOKE WITH THE ‘RICH FRIEND’ PODCAST

(AllHipHop News) Kanye West once again ended a year by earning multiple Grammy nominations.

His The Life Of Pablo is up for Best Rap Album.

Ye also got noms for Best Rap Performance, Best Rap/Sung Performance, and Best Rap Song.

TLOP featured appearances by a host of recording artists.

For example, the “Waves” track contained vocals provided by Kid Cudi and Chris Brown.

Kanye’s friend and artistic creator Fonzworth Bentley stopped by the Rich Friend podcast and talked about the making of Pablo and “Waves.”

“One day, [Kanye’s] like, ‘Yo, who’s the second most hated n-gga in America? Chris Brown. I need to do a record with Chris Brown,'” said Bentley.

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ former assistant spent a lot of time in the studio with Kanye, and Fonzworth admitted he did not bathe regularly.

Then one day Bentley returned to the recording space in his typical clean dressed attire.

“So as I walk in the studio, the beat to ‘Waves’ is on, and Ye is sitting on one side of the studio and Chris is on the other side,” recalls Fonzworth. “So I walk in with my bop, and Ye is like, ‘Walk up in this b-tch like…’”

Bentley went on to talk about how his brother believes angels are going to come out of waves crashing against the surf.

The thought helped inspire the spiritual themes presented on The Life Of Pablo which was known as Swish at the time.

According to Bentley, he assisted in writing the hook for “Waves” and producing the record.

Kanye even announced the entire project was being renamed Waves before finally settling on The Life Of Pablo.
