(AllHipHop News) The Police Academy film series’ cast of quirky cops became some of the most popular movie characters of the 1980’s. Mahoney, Hightower, Tackleberry, Hooks, Jones, Captain Harris, Commandant Lassard, and others brought laughs to an entire generation of moviegoers during the Reagan era.
Two of the most prominent comedians of the 2010’s is looking to bring some of that oddball comedy back in a new installment of Police Academy. Jordan Peele reveals he is teaming with his longtime comedy partner Keegan-Michael Key to reboot the franchise.
The stars of Comedy Central’s#### series Key & Peele have not decided if they will star in the movie, but the MADtv alum do want to take on the job of remaking the cult classic.
“We’re going to finish shooting season four of Key & Peele in a couple of months,” says Peele. “After that we’re going into filmmaking, one of which is going to be the reboot of Police Academy.”
Since the tragic killing of teenager Michael Brown at the hands of Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson, the sometimes tenuous relationship between the police force and the community has become a national discussion. Peele ensures a new Academy will appropriately cover that situation.
“We’re taking on this challenge of making it a Police Academy that isn’t blind to the complicated relationship between police and citizens these days and has been there for awhile,” Peele states. “I think we’re going to make a movie that’s silly but also relevant.”
New episodes of Key & Peele air Wednesdays 10:30 ET on Comedy Central. Check out a clip from the show below.
