The South Carolina State Senate has agreed to remove the Confederate flag from the State House grounds.
The lawmakers voted 37-3 for the initial approval of the bill. Now the bill has to get past Governor Nikki Haley and another 2/3 majority vote from the House. This will be decided on Tuesday, according to published reports.
Three Republicans voted agains the proposed legislation. They were Senate Majority Leader Harvey Peeler, Sen. Lee Bright and Sen. Danny Verdin.
The flag has been controversial for decades, but recently became more of a lynchpin after a white male killed 9 African Americans in a Charleston, NC church.
