Hip Hop Rumors: Trina Goes In On Instagram Follower For Mentioning Khloe?

Its obvious that Trina is hurt behind French dropping her for Khloe Kardashian, but one fan took things too far with Da Baddest B**** and decided to give their take on things, calling Trina a “rat” and saying she’s been with every rapper in the industry.

Ms. Trina didn’t take the comments well and held nothing back when lighting ol’ girl’s a** up…

Mmph. Pretty sure Trina lost a follower that day.

Hip Hop Rumors: On The Run Tour Ticket Sales Moving Slow

Could it be the Solange beatdown or this alleged mistress talk that’s got fans not buying?

According to Showbiz 411:

“Tickets are selling slow as molasses for the Jay Z-Beyonce “On the Run” tour of stadiums that’s set to start in 10 days.

Right now, there are over 11,000 tickets in motion on StubHub for the couple’s July 11th show at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands. Several more thousand are available for the second show, on July 12th.

Even on Ticketmaster.com’s own system, a quick check shows a very bald stadium, with lots of tickets for sale and official resale. Right now, getting to see the first couple of modern R&B is pretty simple. And relatively inexpensive.

All told, Beyonce and Jay Z are going to play 17 stadium dates in the US and two in Canada beginning June 25 in Miami. But right now, tickets are available in every city and at every price.

What’s happening? Over saturation. Jay Z played a year long tour with Justin Timberlake, for an album– “Magna Carta Holy Grail”– that was given away for free by Samsung. Beyonce already toured. She just finished the worldwide “Mrs. Carter” tour in March 2014. It took in over $229 million.

Even with her “Visual” album scoring a big first month last December, Beyonce just hasn’t had a breakout single like “Single Ladies” or “Crazy in Love.” The album is off the top 200 for a while now. Jay Z’s is long gone.

Maybe this would have worked at smaller venues.

And the gossip? With no denials, but lots of “unnamed sources,” my guess it’s mostly made up to keep some interest in the couple while they’re on tour. Just wait for some “staged” episodes to lure in passive ticketholders.”

Is the world getting tired of hip-hop’s power couple? Or can we not dish out the cash just yet?

Hip-Hop Rumors: Is Diddy Expecting A Baby With Cassie?

I don’t know how true this is, but there are some babies on the way for Diddy, if these rumors are saying anything. If course, I don’t know the facts. So, here is the speculation. I was told that Cassie is pregnant. That’s not a new notion. These rumors have been running around, but no seed. But more recently, they said Cassie uploaded an image that was clearly showing she was with child. But, the image almost immediately disappeared. Then somebody else apparently copied the image and uploaded it to their blog, but that image also vanished. This has all lead to the speculation that there are forces at work to control the way this is put out. Whatever happens, “they” say Cassie is keeping it.

Anyway, there is another baby on the way.

Actress Cherie Johnson( P#### Brewster, Family Matters) and actor Dennis L.A. White, who portrayed D-Roc in “Notorious,” are going to have a kid together! They have a baby coming in August. You heard it here first.

Azealia Banks Throws Shots At T.I. & Tiny; Tiny Responds

(AllHipHop News) It appears Azealia Banks’ decision to stop beefing with other celebrities was just a short-lived change of heart. Or maybe Ms. Bank$ had a temporary relapse back to her old ways, because the New York performer took to Twitter to take another shot at past target T.I. and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris.

A tweet (since deleted) credited to the “212” rapper’s certified Twitter account was a not-so-subtle insult aimed at The Family Hustle reality show stars.

“No Mediocre” is the title of T.I. latest single featuring another Banks rival Iggy Azalea. Azealia and Iggy clashed in the past over placement on the XXL Freshmen cover in 2012. Banks was upset that Iggy was given a spot in the magazine. She felt the native Australian should not have been the only female represented because of the controversial lyrics in Iggy’s song “D.R.U.G.S.” which included a reference to being a “slave master.”

T.I. played a role in introducing Iggy to the public, so the Hustle Gang leader defended his protégé against Banks’ attacks. That lead to a feud between Tip and Banks that apparently still has not been resolved.

This time it was Tiny who had a response for Banks. The former Xscape member used her Instagram page to ask the young Harlemite a question.

50 Cent & The Game To Drop Albums The Same Day (POLL)

(AllHipHop News) 50 Cent has always been an outspoken follower of Robert Greene’s 48 Laws of Power. The Queens rapper may have called upon few of those laws – “court attention at all cost,” “crush your enemy totally,” & “master the art of timing” – for his latest move in music.

Fiddy revealed recently that his next studio album Street King Immortal will be released September 16th. The Source points out 9/16 is the same date former G-Unit member and longtime 50 rival The Game is dropping his next LP Blood Money La Familia.

If both albums’ release date remains unchanged, this will set-up an interesting sales battle between two emcees that have repeatedly thrown shots at each other over the years. Prior to 50 Cent announcing the date for his 6th solo album, Game seemed confident he would have the top-selling album the week of his release.

Blood Money La Familia will be another #1 album,” said Game in a statement earlier this month.

50 is no stranger to album sales competition. He famously went head-to-head with Kanye West on September 11, 2007 when Ye’s Graduation outsold 50’s Curtis in first week units sold.

One year ago this week three rap stars dropped their albums. Kanye’s Yeezus, J. Cole’s Born Sinner, and Mac Miller’s Watching Movies with the Sound Off all hit retailers the same week. That three-way battle ended with each emcee/producer topping 100,000 units sold opening week.

Aaliyah Biopic Headed To Lifetime Network

(AllHipHop News) Lifetime seems to be branding itself as the network of the fallen R&B star biopic. The channel recently announced it was producing an Angela Bassett directed movie about the late Whitney Houston, and according to THR Aaliyah is up next.

Coleman previously appeared on Disney’s Shake It Up! and ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, and she is set to take the lead role in the upcoming sitcom K.C. Undercover also on the Disney Channel. Zendaya also released her self-titled album in 2013.

There had been talk for years that a feature film about “Baby Girl” was in the works. Several actresses/singers including Solange, Tristin Mays, and Keisha Chante had been rumored to be up for the part of Aaliyah.

Aaliyah: Princess of R&B is being produced by Aaliyah Productions. The TV movie is being written by Michael Elliot (Brown Sugar, Just Wright) and directed by Bradley Walsh (Turn the Beat Around, A Killer Among Us).

Let's Talk The State of R&B Inspired By Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman

I talk often about my discontent with the state of R&B and missing what it used to be, so after seeing an Instagram post by Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman, I felt it would now be a good time to write about the state of R&B.

Remember at one time when rap was allegedly pronounced dead or a little unconscious and auto-tuned pop songs had taken over the charts? Has this same thing happened to R&B? The genre has certainly seen icons like Patti LaBelle, Whitney Houston, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, and many more come through, but what is the current state of R&B now? Perhaps discordant sounds and hyper-sexual themes have moved us from baby making music to a pop or hip hop blended kind of R&B. The genre has gone from “I’ll Make Love To You” to “pull your panties to the side”. It seems to be more about making a quick hot single than making a lasting and indelible mark on music. If it’s about money only and making “popcorn music” then one’s artistry is already at jeopardy. R&B is having an identity crisis.

Screen shot 2014-06-15 at 10.07.04 PM

Many artists have spoken about the genre and why it seems to be dying compared to the hip hop and popular genres. Some believe that R&B has lost its way compared to the dominance it held in ’90s. Another argument is songs lack real vocals, real emotion, live instrumentation, and love. R&B should not be “pull your panties to the side and these hoes ain’t loyal” but it is right now. R&B was a genre that gave you great vibes and evoked emotion in ways that no other genre could. R&B shaped the music industry for decades, but now it seems to have abandoned the amazing foundation it was built on (think ’60s,’70s, ’80s, ’90s). Interesting enough genres like country music have been able to stay true to their roots and continue to sell and win big.

Boyz II Men was recently awarded top R&B group of the century by the RIAA. Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman stated “If no one else is gonna say it, guess I will! It’s simple, the songs are too damn raunchy! You cannot play half the rotation from black artists on prime time radio because the songs are too suggestive! There’s no mystique, nothing romantic or gentlemen-like in the lyrics! Yeah, it might get you turnt in the club, and a small group of people may support it, but it’s not enough to get airplay in those formats that matter! And despite what advertisers to stations may think, I personally don’t believe that all young kids want to hear is that type of music all day. Change the songs producers, writers! You are the taste makers, not the labels! And then you will see a change!”

He went on to say, “What’s with R&B singers trying to be thugs? Cut that sh*t out and make some good music.”

Stockman also commented on why artists like Justin Timberlake and Robin Thicke are dominating the R&B genre right now. “While bruh bruh’s in the club talking about sluttin’ chics out calling them b*tches, JT and Robin are in the lounges romancing them.”

What happened to real R&B? I’m talking that ’60s-’90s R&B feel. What happened to timeless classic R&B, when people were really singing, true vocals, a cappella tracks, sick vocal runs, live instrumentation, love songs, sensuality, the funk, the new jack swing, the neo soul, doo-wop, the tight harmonies, the sick vocal arrangement, funky bass lines, ballads, when vocals or even production alone would give you chills or raise the hair on your arm or even make you cry with emotion? It’s incredible how you can play songs from years ago that still make you “jam” because the timeless quality of the music. But where is this kind of R&B? R&B’s role in both American and black culture is too crucial to let it fade to black or conform.

Screen shot 2014-06-15 at 10.05.23 PM

The genre has gone completely pop or hip hop. The rappers are singing or the songs sound almost techno. Today’s production such as auto tune and things of that nature also affect the soulfulness of the music. R&B production, composition, and vocals at times are a little monotonous now. Sure there are some truly talented singers keeping the genre alive such as Fantasia, Marsha Ambrosius, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Pharrell, Chris Brown (at times), Frank Ocean, Miguel, The Weeknd, Bobby V, Neyo, Trey Songz, Melanie Fiona, TGT, Sevyn Streeter, and Usher just to name a few, but how could something so amazing fade to black or be on life support as a genre. Veteran R&B solo artists and groups are still touring and making music such as Beyonce, Toni Braxton, Babyface, Mariah Carey, R.Kelly, Mary J.Blige, Maxwell, Eric Benet, Kelly Price, The Isley Brothers, New Edition, Boyz II Men, Jagged Edge, 112, Silk, Dru Hill, K-Ci and JoJo and many more but even still, for some, the efforts seem to be scattered or come across as an afterthought in relation to mainstream success sometimes.

Screen shot 2014-06-15 at 10.12.35 PM

Even at a time when artists like Jodeci, Mary J. Blige, Timbaland and Aaliyah, Total and Biggie married hip hop & R&B you still felt the presence of R&B. Now many will argue that there is not a lot of separation.

As a journalist who just turned 26 I have been fortunate to make some amazing strides in 5 years as I have talked to/(and or interviewed) Boyz II Men, Jodeci, Dru Hill, Jagged Edge, Silk, 112, R. Kelly, Babyface, Teddy Riley, TLC, Donell Jones, Kelly Price, Eric Benet, The Isley Brothers, New Edition, Kenny Lattimore, Brandy, Monica, Faith Evans, Nicci Gilbert, Xscape, H Town, Shai, SWV, Ginuwine, Tyrese, Tank, Keith Sweat, Mint Condition, Monifah, RL, Angie Stone, Mariah Carey, Jermaine Dupri, Bryan Michael Cox, Chante Moore, KeKe Wyatt, Case, Charlie Wilson and many more amazing artists and producers that were influential from the 60-90s/early 2000s era. Many talked about how amazing R&B used to be and what they are doing to continue to keep the style and genre afloat. The key phrase is “used to be” showing their acknowledgement of the fact that there has been a change or shift. Some have remained positive and optimistic by saying that R&B is in a good place, and it’s evolving.

R&B Group Silk stated that R&B is missing love. John Legend stated that he continues to write love songs because they come naturally to him because he grew up on them. “I grew up on Marvin Gaye. There’s something about it. It’s so universal. Everybody feels these things,” said Legend. John Legend’s “All Of Me” is a top record and its just his vocals and the piano proving that R&B still has a place in people’s hearts and it’s still amazing enough to be supported.

At the 2013 Grammy’s Chris Brown stated to Ryan Seacrest, “A lot of the music nowadays, I love it, but it’s very gimmicky. Even some of my music is gimmicky,” he laughed. “But I just want R&B to go back to the real music—a lot of instruments, the real band, essence of being able to perform and be an entertainer.”

What happened to radio and record label support for R&B? What happened to artist development? Nowadays a R&B artist would be lucky to get their song heard on the radio. Some stations are strictly hip hop format and others claim to be hip hop and R&B but may only spin a few R&B songs a day or play songs that are rap with a R&B hook or R&B featuring a rapper. Consequently R&B is confined (when it comes to radio) to what have been labelled the old school stations or online playlist stations like Pandora, thus making it a generational gap for exposure to real R&B as the “old school” stations cater to/ attract an older demographic. R&B, without elements of other genres or overly sexual themes, seems to be a risk to record labels nowadays.

Some say that people don’t want to hear what they used to hear in R&B. Although music is supposed to evolve I believe that this is false. People absolutely still want to hear what they used to hear in R&B music. R&B used to have that magic that made you want to be in love. It had that magic to speak to your emotions or something you were going through. It was timeless so it would take you back to a time in your life each time you heard a song. Where are the story tellers? Where are the completely amazing bodies of work? Where is the music that makes you reflect on life and love?

If R&B and its support don’t go back to focusing on quality not quantity, in a couple of years the genre could be defunct.

So You Think You Can Dance Season 11 Atlanta Auditions Air Tomorrow!

One group of dancers performed the dance for the opening scene, and another group actually broke down the dance for viewers to learn. Season 11’s Atlanta auditions will air tomorrow on Fox! Make sure you tune in!

EBC Basketball Tournament At Rucker Park To Air Show On ESPN

(AllHipHop News) The legendary tradition of New York City street ball is headed to TV. The Entertainer’s Basketball Classic (EBC), known for its star-studded summer tournaments at Rucker Park, is teaming with ESPN to air eight half-hour episodes of highlights from this year’s competition.

Fans will also have access to the 2014 Summer Tournament via the web with live streaming of two games taking place once a week on the EBC website. This announcement comes in conjunction with EBC revealing it has secured corporate sponsorships with Reebok Classic, Monster Energy Drink, New Era and The Ultimate Fan (T.U.F.).

“With the support of our new sponsors, we are able to take the EBC at Rucker Park to new heights,” says EBC Founder Greg Marius. “Over the last 30 years, we have continued to make improvements and evolve the game of street ball, while still remaining authentic and true to its core, which are both beneficial to our players and basketball fans. These most recent improvements allow us to enhance the excitement and experience the community have when they visit the EBC at Rucker Park.”

The court at West 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard’s Rucker Parker is no longer topped with asphalt. Players will now ball on a NBA-style outdoor wood floor. The new floor will feature images of celebrated EBC players that have passed away- Malik Sealy, John “Big Strick” Strickland, Troy “Escalade” Jackson and Tyrone “Alimoe” Evans. In addition, new bleachers and a digital scoreboard have been added to the park.

The 2014 EBC Summer Basketball Tournament kicked off on June 16th. A Men’s division, Women’s division, Tri-state High School division, and several Youth divisions will all take place. Special celebrity coaches from music and the NBA are expected to participate as well. Last year saw professional ballers like Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and Shaquille O’Neal and Hip Hop stars like Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, and Fat Joe make appearances.

Dilated Peoples Announce "Directors Of Photography" Album (Tracklist)

(AllHipHop News) After an eight year hiatus, Dilated Peoples are set to return with a new album. Evidence, Rakaa (Iriscience) and DJ Babu’s Directors of Photography LP will be available later this summer.

“In film, the Director of Photography is the one who’s selecting the shots, framing it,” says Evidence. “The same thing with us. We might not be making the beat, but we’re selecting tracks that we want to use, doing the mix, talking with the producer. We’re very much the selectors of everything we do.”

The collective first burst onto the scene with 2000’s The Platform. Their last album was 20/20 in 2006. Directors of Photography will be Dilated People’s first project released via Expansion Team/Rhymesayers Entertainment.

“I think the statement we made this time around is that the three of us are still here standing making quality Hip Hop from our hearts,” DJ Babu says. “We never chased trends and we always stayed true to ourselves. Even with the changes in the music industry and the world, we still managed to stay cutting edge, classic and, in many ways, independent. This LP is very full circle for us.”

Directors of Photography is scheduled for release on August 12. The album can be pre-ordered on iTunes.
