Schoolboy Q: Kendrick Is Bigger Than The Rest Of Us, Criticizes XXL Cover (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) In an entertainment industry based on presentation, perception often times becomes reality and Schoolboy Q seems to fully understand this ideal. In a recent interview with MTV News, Schoolboy Q shared Ab-Soul’s distaste for XXL’s Black Hippy cover and addressed the popularity hierarchy in the group.

After calling the cover title “so disrespectful”, Q reasoned that the shoot was proposed to them differently than what the title implied:

We didn’t go into that shoot saying, ‘This is Kendrick with Black Hippy photo shoot for the cover.’ We went in there and said, ‘This is a Black Hippy shoot,’ so we expect a Black Hippy shoot.

While insulted by the title, Schoolboy Q does understand the reality of having a labelmate that has already begun his commercial ascension:

At the end of the day and I always say this, too, Kendrick, he’s way ahead of us. He’s a platinum artist. I haven’t dropped my album yet. [Jay] Rock’s working on his major-label album. Ab-Soul’s working on his major-label album. We still haven’t dropped our major-label albums, so honestly, at the same time, at the end of the day, I mean he is f###### Kendrick Lamar.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Guess Where The Newest Love And Hip-Hop Will Be?

They seem to be franchising the “Love & Hip-Hop” series big time, even though some people are tiring of the antics. It seems like there’s nothing definitive, but I heard a new rumor. The latest is that Ray J may be returning to reality TV to anchor “Love & Hip-Hop: Los Angeles.” There aren’t too many more details to this rumor now, but that’s just what it is. There was clarity with some of the previous rumors about the “Love & Hip-Hop” series, but most of it is murky at best now. We’ll see.

Re-Run: Jay Z Being Sued For Sample In “Run This Town”

(AllHipHop News) Jay Z is being placed in another legal dispute, this time over one of his biggest hits. Record label Tuf America is suing the Brooklyn rapper and Roc Nation for illegally sampling a song they own the rights to, 1969′s “Hook and Sling” by Eddie Bo.

According to the suit, Tuf America claimed to have attained exclusive rights to “Hook and Sling” in 1996 and are now requesting the stoppage of “any further distribution or exploitation”:

TufAmerica did not authorize the defendants’ reproduction, distribution or public performance of the audio recording ‘Run This Town’ in a music video or in the albums

Jay Z, his Roc-A-Fella Records, LLC, Atlantic Recording Corp are named in the complaint among others. This is the second time Tuf America has a sued Roc-A-Fella Records for use of “Hook and Sling”. Last year, the record label sued Kanye West, Roc-A-Fella Records and parent Universal Music Group for sampling the song in “Who Will Survive in America?” and “Lost in the World” from 2010’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

Kanye also sampled “Hook and Sling” on the free-for-download song “G.O.O.D. Friday”.

Chief Keef Sentenced To 90-Day Drug Rehab; Due Back In Court Today

(AllHipHop News) News broke yesterday that Chicago rapper Chief Keef was preparing to be sent back to jail after failing two mandatory drug tests. According to the Chicago Tribune, the 18-year-old has been sentenced to 90 days in a residential drug rehabilitation center for the parole violation, but he will have to return to court today to determine exactly where he will be housed.

Keef was first ordered by the judge to enter the Haymarket Center, but Cook County sheriff officials did not send him to the West Side treatment facility because of concerns that the center is unguarded. Keef is to report back to court today to determine if he will be placed at another location.

The “Hate Bein’ Sober” performer was subject to random drug tests as part of his probation conditions stemming from a speeding arrest earlier this year. He has been jailed numerous times including a 2011 arrest for a gun charge and separate incidents in Miami and Atlanta.

Elzhi Refuses Major Labels; Launches Kickstarter Campaign To Fund Album

(AllHipHop News) As the music industry continues to adjust to the decade-long decline in music sales, artists search for new ways to fund their projects. Whether it is superstars like Jay Z and Eminem linking with corporations or underground artists like Nipsey Hussle and Curren$y developing innovative methods to promote their music, the business of the rap game is in a state of transition.

Ignoring the offers of major label, Detroit emcee Elzhi has decided to go straight to the people for help in producing his next album. The former member of Slum Village started a kickstarter campaign with GLOW365 to enlist donations to help cover the costs of finalizing production, album promotion, and a future tour.

Contributors will have the chance to receive rewards such as exclusive artwork, access to listening parties, and a copy of one of the last 27 vinyls of his classic mixtape Elmatic.

“I’ve already passed on a few record deals, and I’ve partnered with the GLOW365 alliance because we truly believe that the integrity of the music comes first,” writes El on his kickstarter page. “I have always been a believer in being a leader and trendsetter. The music I make comes strictly from me and how I feel, and I will never sacrifice who I am to conform to a trend. This new record is no different.”

The campaign has already collected $4,300 of its $25,000 goal in one day. Elzhi will be collecting donations until December 6th.

“This is it…this one is all about us. This is our chance to show the world what my music and the people who love it are all about: pure, authentic, creative music…real Hip Hop,” adds El.

F#*k Minista Paul Scott—“Why N.W.A. Should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!”

________________

The views and opinions expressed herein are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of AllHipHop.com

_________________

This piece by Khalil Amani is in response to TRUTH Minista Paul Scott’s editorial “F**K N.W.A. – ‘Why N.W.A Should NEVER Be In The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame'”

Rap group N.W.A. (Ni**az Wit Attitudes) was one of the seminal groups of the genre known as “Gangsta Rap.” From Compton, California these guys became stars before the radio embraced them. They rapped that real hardcore street ish. They rapped about smashing chicks. They rapped about being gangsters—and like any great movie of the Godfather/Scarface ilk—America was drawn to them. They sold over 10 million records in America alone and now they are being nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! Yes!

But hold on! Stop the presses! This guy, Minista Paul Scott (Who?!), a social critic (and I guess, a hip-hop head of the conscious variety) ain’t happy about it! He has laid the plight of urban, ghetto-dwelling America squarely at the feet of N.W.A. Hot dayum!

(Minista Paul Scott)

But why do we even care about what Minista Paul Scott thinks about N.W.A.? Like who is he? (His bio. says he’s been on a shed-load on TV shows and created “African Liberation TheoIogy”–a rip-off of James Cone’s “Black Liberation Theology.”) So I have to assume that his voice/opinion is somewhat important in hip-hop circles to be on Allhiphop.com, (and other sites) ‘cause a n#### like me?—had I spoken ill of N.W.A. would’ve gotten the talk-to-da-hand! So I guess he’s impotent important. I guess…

Am I missing something here? Are we talking music or are we talking “The Destruction of Black Civilization?” (See Chancellor Williams’s book) What is this dude “Minista” Paul Scott talking about? By virtue of his self-proclaimed title “Minista” he’s either on some religious and/or pro-black stuff or he’s just a hater of N.W.A.’s discography. We can assume that he’s the pro-black consciousness of the hip-hop nation whose Negritude is quite substantial. (Or a blacker-than-thou afrocentrist who wants to be hip-hoppity cool by using Ebonics/slang/regional dialect to misspell “minister”—thereby helping contribute to the legacy of N.W.A.’s dumbing-down of the hood. Side-eye.)

So Minista Scott doesn’t wanna see N.W.A. in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Why? Because he insists that their music spawned the decline of black people and influenced the young to a life of criminality and is responsible for the deaths of black people. He further claims “N.W.A. represents everything that went terribly wrong with the art-form [of rap].” In short, N.W.A. made it cool for blacks to kill blacks. This is the simplicity of his argument.

I was a 20-something year old college kid back in those days who used to blast “Straight Out Compton,” “Tha Chronic” and “Doggystyle” and never once did I think about picking up a gat and pushin’ a n####’s wig back! Never once thought of affiliating myself with the Bloods & Crips! I’ve never shanked anyone and I was a huge gangsta rap fan! (Still am, ’cause Fiddicent’s “G.R.O.D.T.” stay in my CD player!)

But let the minister tell it! These ghetto children were the zombies of N.W.A.

Forget the fact that gang-life in the hood started waaaay before hip-hop was even birthed! Forget about the socio-economic blight of impoverished areas like South Central, Compton and Watts. Forget that the Bloods & Crips were the stepchildren of the Black Power Movement of the Black Panther Party, which was dismantled by J. Edgar Hoover’s “Cointel” (counter-intelligence) program and left to their own devices. (See “The Cointel Pro Papers” by Churchhill & Vanderwall).

I mean, this is, apparently where Minista Scott wants to take it!

N.W.A. is no island! They didn’t come on the scene out of nowhere (as the minista suggests!) They are the product of the legacy of Los Angeles, which they were exposed to daily. Blaming N.W.A. for the ills of black life is akin to Rush Limbaugh blaming Trayvon Martin for his own murder! N.W.A. were victims of circumstance! Their world-view had not evolved out of their community.

And since when was the standard and litmus-test for musical greatness judged by an artist’s civil and political works towards his own people and neighborhood? I mean, like, are those rock & roll bands asked about how much influence they had on white kids taking Quaaludes, acid, speed, smoking reefer and dropping out of school and running away to San Fran’s “Haight-Ashbury” district to sing the Beatle’s “Strawberry Fields” and all of the ills that plague white folks in their communities? White-on-white murder may be lower, but let me guess—I bet white economics is higher in white neighborhoods! (Does it really take a rocket scientist to deconstruct how and why N.W.A. rapped about criminality?)

I don’t hear white folk dissing Cat Stevens a.k.a. Yusef Islam about his Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination, although he’s had some sketchy-ness in his life that some could say indirectly hurt America [forget a hood!] (i.e. his quoting Islamic law regarding the fatwa against Salmon Rushdie for his book “Satanic Verses”  and seemingly turning his back on his Christian faith and country.)

Now let’s get to the music, which is really what the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is all about! N.W.A. was iconic! There’s no denying what they brought to the table! So it was violent! So it was dirty! So it was negative! So it was gritty and filled with tales of hood-life gone awry! We get that! But it was truthful! And the WORLD got that!

N.W.A. is to gangsta rap was Elvis was to Rock & Roll! Do you know what they were saying about Elvis when he was gyrating his hang-low in the faces of adoring white chicks? He’s evil! He’s the devil! But Elvis changed the game! The same can be said of N.W.A. They changed the game! Is it their fault that people got tired of the politically charged music of X Clan and Public Enema Enemy? All N.W.A. did was expound and built upon Grandmaster Flash’s “The Message.”

At the end of the day, it should (only) be about the music that gets a person or group inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. It should be about a group’s impact on pop culture (whether negative or positive) and how great their music and movements where. All of the self-righteous negritudenal (I know that’s not a word, but it expresses my point!) posturing to have a musical group stay within the confines of acceptable racial boundaries is ludacrisp silly! If Minista Paul Scott says, “F### N.WA.!” I say, “F### Minista Paul Scott!” Now give N.WA. their just desserts!

Jay Z’s Being Investigated By MLBPA For Giving Gift To Robinson Cano

(AllHipHop News) On Watch The Throne‘s “N***as In Paris” Jay Z rapped “What’s 50 grand to a motherf**king like me?” in response to a $50,000 fine issued by the NBA. It will be interesting to see if Jay has a few bars in the future for the Major League Baseball Players Association after the union decided to investigate the new sports agent for giving a gift to one of his Roc Nation Sports clients.

According to ESPN, the MLBPA is looking into a possible agent regulation violation stemming from a $33,900 watch Robinson Cano received from Roc Nation. Cano was given the limited-edition Hublot Shawn Carter Classic Fusion during his 31st birthday celebration in Belgium last month. He posted a photo of the timepiece on Instagram.

Robinson Cano

Union rules state that any gift from an agent to a client over $500 must be disclosed in writing. The regulations are to ensure players choose agents based on merits and not favors. If it is determined that Jay Z did violate the rules he could face an unspecified disciplinary action.

In a very impressive coup, Jay got Cano to leave high-profile sports agent Scott Boras and sign with Roc Nation Sports/Creative Artists Agency in April. The sought-after free agent is currently looking to sign 10-year, $310 million contract with Yankees.

Chief Keef Headed Back To Jail

(AllHipHop News) Chief Keef is headed back to jail.

The 18-year old rapper reportedly failed a drug test and a judge sent him back to jail.

Keef, a Chicago native, tweeted the breaking news this afternoon. Earlier in the year, he was arrested for driving 110 miles per hour in a 55-mph speeding zone. He was sentenced to 18-months probation at the time, but a condition of the order was random drug tests.

The jail stint will include rehab as well. Last month, Keef tested positive for weed and was promptly sent to jail. He only served 9-days of a 20-day sentence in jail.

The duration of his present incarceration was not immediately known.

Yeezus On The Road Again: Kanye West To Resume Tour In Philly

(AllHipHop News) After a week of postponements, truck crashes, cancellations and rumors of subpar ticket sales, Kanye West’s Yeezus tour is scheduled to return soon.

According to The L.A. Times, a rep with Kanye West announced that the Yeezus tour will resume on November 16th in Philadelphia. Due to the week long postponement of the tour, it will conclude on December 23rd instead of its original December 13th end date.

The tour has experienced numerous setbacks including rescheduling a November 1st show at the Honda Center in Anaheim until December 13. Last week, Kanye was forced to postpone stops in Denver, Minneapolis and his native Chicago due to a truck accident involving his truck carrying the tour’s 60-foot circular LED screen.

No word on if those canceled dates will refund ticket buyers.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Does Tupac Shakur Have A Daughter?

This is a rumor that has existed in many incarnations through the years. And now, our own Ill Community has delved into the annals of Hip-Hop and pulled some compelling evidence that Pac has a daughter walking around in the free world, unbeknownst to most. Now, there ave been long rumors that Pac had a kid. But, there appears to be a shout out on Busta Rhymes album When Disaster Strikes. That was the late 90’s right before Pac passed. Here is a picture be passed around as the girl that is of royal lineage.

What do you think?

Of course there are people that say this is utter trash. I do find it plausible that Pac had a kid somewhere in the rolling 90’s.

Kool G Rap Was Once Homeless Because He Lost Money Gambling At Carnival (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) While at Cipha Sounds’ Take It Personal event last Friday (Nov. 1), Kool G Rap explained how he and Grand Daddy I.U. were once stranded and homeless after a performance.

According to G Rap, the allure of gambling at a nearby carnival was too much to fight and the subsequent squandering of his and I.U.’s money led to an equally as insatiable thirst for revenge. After an expensive extension to their hotel stay and repeated attempts at making back what they lost,  two of the members of the Juice Crew had to resort to other measure to get home due to losing their transportation money to get to the airport.

UCB improvisers Abra Tabak, Brandon Gardner and Cipha Sounds himself turns Kool G Rap’s tale of indulgence and poor financial management into a hilarious social commentary on female objectification.

Cipha Sounds’ Take It Personal is every Friday at 9pm at UCB Theatre on 153 3rd St. This Friday (November 8th) the guests will be Smiff-N-Wessun.

Check out Kool G Rap’s story and the accompanying skit below:

?uestlove Wrote A Eulogy For The Cancellation Of His Chicken Restaurant

(AllHipHop News) ?uestlove’s chicken shack Hybrid will be closing, but not without The Roots drummer bidding it an appropriate adieu. In a lengthy Facebook post, ?uestlove wrote an 800-word eulogy for Hybrid, explaining reasons for its closure and flex his blog writing.

In the midst of the random pop culture references and foodie comparisons to J. Dilla, ?uestlove explains that he and co owner Stephen Starr are closing the store but even he questions the move:

kinda weird to pull the plug considering the bird’s critical swag: cover of new york magazine, mentions in the new york times, bon appetit, food & wine, elle, the new yorker, zagat, paper magazine, new york post, village voice, time out, the hollywood reporter, vogue and a cameo on the view where sherri shepard and jenny mccarthy came to hybrid to meet me for lunch.

While ?uest says everything except a reason for its closure, Eater NY reports that a tipster has informed them that employees as Hybrid were told the closure was due to poor sales.

Hybrid opened in May of this year.
