Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, & Rihanna Not Boycotting Florida

(AllHipHop News) Last week Stevie Wonder made news when the legendary singer announced that he would not play any shows in Florida as a form of protest against the state’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law. The statute gained national attention after Trayvon Martin was killed by George Zimmerman in 2012 and the not guilty verdict in Zimmerman’s murder trial on July 13.

Reports began circulating that other high-profile stars like Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Madonna, Alicia Keys, The Rolling Stones, Rihanna, and Usher were joining Wonder’s refusal to perform in Florida. The Huffington Post is now reporting that list of stars has been mostly discredited.

The story was first reported by American Urban Radio Networks’ White House correspondent April Ryan. In Ryan’s article she claimed that sources close to Stevie Wonder confirmed the list. According to HuffPost several of the performers representatives have stated off the record that their clients are not involved in the boycott.

Rihanna, Alicia Keys, and The Rolling Stones have been confirmed to not be participating. Justin Timberlake and Jay Z apparently have not committed to the boycott either. Sun Life Stadium, the venue for the Miami stop of their joint tour, issued a statement on its website yesterday saying, “the Legends of The Summer Stadium tour with Justin Timberlake and JAY Z will take place as planned.”

Ryan updated her original post on Tuesday:

I obtained from multiple sources early Monday a list of artists and entertainers who my sources told me had committed to a boycott of Florida following the George Zimmerman acquittal.  Since publishing that list I have heard from several representatives of the artists named who say, on behalf of their clients, they are uncomfortable being identified on that list and are seeking additional information.

As of now the only acts on Ryan’s published list that have publicly announced that they will be boycotting the state of Florida are gospel group Mary Mary and soul singer Eddie Levert.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Jay Changed His Name, If You Didn’t Know!

I was alerted to something: Jay-Z has changed his name. The artist formally known as Jay-Z is now to be referred to as Jay Z.

Remove the dash and you have his new name for your pleasure. Now, I was thinking, in my own twisted mind that Jay removed the dash from his name as a sneak diss to Dame Dash! OK, I know its crazy and even foolish, but I’ve come to realize that Jay has a super slick way of dissing people. Recently Dame commented on Jay, where he said:

“In the barber shop listening to jays new album….I can’t front… I still like hearing him pop s### cause I know he’s telling the truth…proud to be be a part of that..#bittersweet.”

And then Jay-Z told Hot 97:

“No matter what, no time or space. No matter how many years I ain’t seen him, the love is still there because what we’ve done will forever be stamped in history. We created something that’s going to go down forever. I can only have love for Damon.”

AND THEN HE DROPPED THE DASH LIKE 2 WEEKS LATER! GET IT!?! OHHHH…That Jay is slicker than a can of grease!

OH YEAH…THAT BOYCOTT….=

In related news, it doesn’t look like Jay “No Dash” Z is boycotting anything. I know people at AHH were calling and trying to verify this so-called massive boycott and nobody was able to do so. Looks like Stevie Wonder and Mary Mary are all alone in their protest. It doesn’t appear that anybody on that so-called massive list was really boycotting Florida.

In fact, it looks like this so-called royal baby has blocked out all the Trayvon coverage. Between that and Zimmerman’s BS saving somebody from their car, its looking like people have their hands full.

Moms ain’t smiling though. And neither is Dame! Lets link back up! Bring Dame back into the fray!!!!

I was kidding about him dissing Dame, for you WACK JOBS that think I was for real.

Russell Simmons To Help Launch ‘All Def Music’ Label

(AllHipHop News) The record industry has been attempting to find innovative methods to embrace the digital age for years. Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons, filmmaker Brian Robbins, and music executive Steve Rifkin are trying a unique approach of connecting online media to the music business. According to Billboard the three entertainment veterans have joined forces for a new label venture centered around YouTube.

All Def Music is a partnership with Universal Music Group to discover, promote, and develop rising talent through the Google-owned video sharing site.

ADM will also include All Def Digital Management which has already signed internet comic sensation Spoken Reasons and Pennsylvania rapper Asher Roth. Roth will appear in the unscripted music program “Lemonade.”

“The exponential growth of Internet-based video has created a powerful new outlet for music and music-based content, and the launch of All Def Music is a part of our broader strategy to partner with some of the most experienced entrepreneurs in media and technology to identify future stars and develop powerful content on the world’s fastest growing media platform,” said UMG chairman Lucian Grainge.

“This is the most exciting new terrain for me, to move talent across all media platforms, and I couldn’t have better partners in Brian and Steve, and the most innovative of music executives, Lucian Grainge,” added Simmons.

King Louie Accused Of Setting Up A Videotaped Assault Of A Woman For Publicity

(AllHipHop News) Chicago rapper King Louie is being sued for hiring a woman to attack a female associate on film in order to “promote himself as a rap artist.”

Jazmine Berry claims that the Epic Records recording artist invited her to his home in June for breakfast. Berry says another women, Josephine Conley, then arrived at the home after Berry was already there.

Berry’s suit states that King Louie (born Louis Johnson) and Conley falsely accused her of stealing a pair of Marc Jacobs sunglasses. Conley then began punching her in the head, pulling her hair, grabbing her by the neck, and throwing her to the floor. She alleges the entire incident was filmed for the purpose of gaining attention for Louie online.

Berry says two other unidentified people were present and were laughing in the background. Neither witnesses present attempted to break up the fight.

Individuals can also be heard yelling “DJ Nate” in the video. An assault and robbery of Nathan “DJ Nate” Clark was videotaped and uploaded online last month.

“You just gonna let her do this to me?” Berry could be heard asking in the video.

A male voice responds, “I don’t know what ya’ll got going on. She said you took something from her.”

Louie shared the video on his verified Twitter account with the hashtag #marcjacobsbandit.

Berry claims she and Louie were longtime friends but had never met Conley prior to that day. She is suing both Johnson and Conley in Cook County Court in Illinois.

Berry is seeking more than $1 million in damages for battery, conspiracy, emotional distress, and defamation. Epic Records was not named in the suit.

Chris Brown Arrested, Pleads Not Guilty In Hit-N-Run

(AllHipHop News) Singer Chris Brown has pleaded not guilty in a hit-n-run case from last year.

According to TMZ, Brown pleaded today and must also report to the police station so he can be formally arrested. When the incident happened in August 2012, he was not booked in the alleged crime.

Brown will be back in court on August 15.

The singer’s probation was revoked earlier this month, but he was allowed to remain free.

Lauryn Hill Writes To Fans From Prison, Talks About Prison Life

(AllHipHop News) Lauryn Hill’s body might be locked up but her pen is still moving freely. Hill wrote a letter to her fans that have been sending mail to her while in prison on her which was posted on her personal Tumblr account.

Ms. Hill thanked all her fans for their kind words and even updated them on her life in prison:

Ms. Hill is currently serving a three month prison sentence stemming from pleading guilty to tax evasion charges regarding unfiled earnings from 2005-2007.

Ms. Hill is due out in October.

(AllHipHop News) 50 Cent’s life has not paused for one second as the mogul continues to forge ahead in this boxing promotions venture, SMS.

Tomorrow, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s SMS Promotions and Lou DiBella DiBella Entertainment will co-host the highly touted Broadway Boxing at the Roseland Ballroom.
The big bout of the night features former world junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman (30-2, 8KO’s) versus Jamaal Davis (14-9-1, 6KO’s). The remainder of the evening hosts boxing acts like Luis Olivares, Emmanuel DeJesus and Donte Strayhorn.

In related news, 50 Cent was to appear in court this week to answer to charges of domestic violence, but the date has been postponed.

(AllHipHop News) In the second part of AllHipHop.com’s exclusive with Gillie Da Kid, he opened up about his new situation with Kansas City Chiefs’ Tamba Hali and Religion Records, as well as connecting with former label mate, Mannie Fresh.

Gillie looks at the new situation with Hali’s Religion Records as the next, logical step in his career.

“Everything we do is top-notch where as my marketing plan before was on an indie label,” Gillie told AllHipHop.com. “I don’t have the money that Tamba got. I was doing it and my look was still big, but now my look is humongous. The difference is before my look was a baby elephant, now I’m fully grown.”

Gillie also touched on locking back in the studio with his former associate Mannie Fresh for the Philadelphia native’s new album Welcome to Giladelphia.

“We going to give yall some of them hit records yall was supposed to get several years ago but you couldn’t get it,” Gillie explained to AllHipHop.com. “So we got back in there locked in, bout to bust you ni**as  heads open. It’s going to be a few ni**as sick … take it like a man.”

Gillie was signed to Cash Money Records in 2002, but the deal was short-lived due to a dispute with the label over publishing. Gillie left the label in 2004.

“It’s beautiful. Mannie Fresh is a ni**a  that makes hit records a ni**a with vision a ni**a  thats really responsible for the whole Cash Money run,” Gillie explained.

Welcome to Giladelphia is the new album by Gillie Da Kid, which is set for a 2014 release date.

Spike Lee Asks Fans To Fund New Movie, Blames Slow Industry

(AllHipHop News) A sentence involving Spike Lee, Veronica Mars and Zach Braff rarely ever happens. However, Spike Lee has joined Veronica Mars and Zach Braff as the latest celebrity to ask fans to help fund their next project for his untitled film about “blood addiction” that “isn’t a vampire movie.”

Spike Lee is currently campaigning for $1.25 million on popular crowdfunding platform Kickstarter.

Speaking with Variety, Lee attributes his inability to get Hollywood financing from big studios on the movie industry’s current preference for high budget blockbuster movies:

I understand now that, with the amount of money it costs to market a film, the studios need films that are going to be tentpoles. But I will go to my grave believing that there are still audiences that want something different. Not to eradicate these type of 3D, blow-up-the-world, ‘Transformers’-type movies. They’re cool, but now it seems like that’s the only thing they’re making.”

He also revealed that the current movie landscape would have made some of his previous movies impossible to make stating ““Universal would not make ‘Do the Right Thing’ today.”

Even George Lucas echoed similar sentiments in a 2012 interview about his movie Red Tails. According to Lucas the movie inspired by the all-Black Tuskeegee Airmen of World War II was delayed from being released due to race:

It’s because it’s an all-black movie. There’s no major white roles in it at all…I showed it to all of them and they said no. We don’t know how to market a movie like this.
