Yelawolf Celebrates His New ‘Trunk Muzik Returns’ Mixtape At SXSW [VIDEO]

(AllHipHop News) Shady Records artist Yelawolf hit the Monster Energy stage last week at the South By Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas in celebration of the release of his latest project Trunk Muzik Returns, and now the Alabama native has uploaded footage of the energetic event on his YouTube channel.

Besides performing tracks from Trunk Muzik Returns, Yelawolf also took time  to talk about being a “single artist” versus an “album artist” with XXL.

“If it ends being that I have a single so be it, but looking back I may just not be the person that is built for that,” says Yelawolf. “I might just make albums… If I get a hit record cool man. If not, f*ck it.”

Yelawolf is currently working on his sophomore LP tentatively titled Love Story. It is expected to be released later this year.

In the meantime, Yelawolf dropped his sequel to 2010’s Trunk Muzik mixtape last week.

The 10 track Trunk Muzik Returns is produced entirely by frequent collaborator WillPower. It features appearances from Paul Wall, A$AP Rocky, Raekwon, and Killer Mike.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Which Reality Show Star Is Suffering From Colon Cancer?

This is a pretty sad one. I am hearing that the dude “Real” from “Chance and Real” (or whatever that show was) is suffering from colon cancer. And, unfortunately, its not a rumor. The dude seems to have it pretty damn bad too. You may remember these dudes from when “New York” spun off from Flavor Flav.

They had a strange image and it wasn’t my “cup of tea,” but they became stars in the reality world for a while. I don’t think there is an insurance policy provided by “television” or “celebrity” though.

So, now he is requesting that people give him money to pay for his bills. Here is that information:

Send donation to Chase bank acct # 407662563 under the account name name “Cancer Funds For Real.”

Here are some pics.

His cancer is advanced, stage four. So, if you want to help, I suggest you hop to it and transfer those funds. Maybe VH1 will help him out.

GOOD LUCK “REAL”

Hip-Hop Secrets: N.O.R.E Talks Losing Publishing, Buying Chicken for Big Pun and More

N.O.R.E had his camera lens behind the scenes of Hip-Hop for decades and prepares to release the compilation of that footage in a documentary entitled What What?. The rapper, who know goes by P.A.P.I (Power. Always. Proves. Intelligence), recently spoke with PNC Radio’s The Combat Jack Show about secrets from his long musical career.

The Combat Jack Show host, Reggie Osse Messed Up NORE’s First Recording Contract

Dallas Penn: “So basically you signed away N.O.R.E.’s publishing?”

Reggie Osse: “Yes!”

In 1996, two 20-year-old former criminals formed a group called Capone-N-Noreaga and signed to Penalty Recordings. At the time, The Combat Jack Show‘s host Reggie Osse was a famous entertainment lawyer who had represented everyone from Jay-Z to Notorious B.I.G and a variety of others. P.A.P.I even jokingly says around 1998 he wanted to fight Osse after the Queens rapper had reviewed the original 1996 contract and discovered all his publishing was gone. Luckily, N.O.R.E.  purchased his publishing back and the rest is Super Thug history.

Wanted Posters Were Used For Promotion

“What [Tragedy] did was make Wanted posters signs. Every three or four days people would hit me on the two-way pager like ‘Hey, I just pulled down your poster sign.” I’m like ‘Nah nigg* that’s for promotion.”-N.O.R.E

In today’s age of social media promotion, flyer promotion is somewhat of an antiquated means of promotion. Famed Hip Hop producer/rapper/manager Tragedy Khadafi knew of Capon and Noreaga’s infamous reputation with guns and decided to use it to spawn a grassroots promotional campaign. Tragedy just did not expect people to take them serious. According to Osse, Tragedy informed him that one time on the train platform a few people recognized him from the wanted poster and went to approach him. Long story short, sometime in the mid-90’s Tragedy was running through the projects ripping down Wanted posters.

Prodigy Had a Verse Removed From “LA, LA” Record, Video Shot On Same Day 2Pac’s “Hit Em Up” Debuts

Reggie Osse: “He wanted to be off the hook too?”

N.O.R.E: “He wanted to be off of everything.”

Back in 1995, tensions between the West Coast and the East Coast were reaching violent levels. In November of 1994, two months after Ready To Die released Tupac was shot in Manhattan’s Quad Studios where Notorious B.I.G. and the Junior Mafia were recording. Following that, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre were partly booed by the crowd at the 1995 Source Awards in New York City which prompted Snoop Dogg and his Tha Doggpound group to release the NYC diss song “NY NY” in November of 1995. In early 1996, Mobb Deep and CNN cooked up a response record however, Loud Records’ President called N.O.R.E. and said Prodigy wanted his involvement on the diss record taken off. On the day of video shoot for “LA, LA”  Tupac released the legendary incendiary diss track “Hit Em Up” in mid-1996. Prodigy’s verse was later used on Nas’ “Live N*gga Rap” song off his It Was Written album which was released less than a month after Tupac released “Hit Em Up”.

Capone-N-Noreaga Got Banned From Infamous The Tunnel Nightclub

“Capone was trying to mess with Foxy Brown. One of Foxy’s people hit Capone in the head with a bottle. I then hit homeboy in the head with the bottle.”-N.O.R.E.

If you ask anyone who frequented the infamous nightclub The Tunnel  during its 90’s supremacy they will tell you it was a melting pot of delinquents and debauchery that was the most fun you could have in Hip Hop. N.O.R.E. could no get entrance into the club after a while under no circumstances. Even the late great Big Pun, at the height of his double platinum popularity in late 1998 could not get N.O.R.E. into the Tunnel without “seven undercover police officers” stopping him from entering. That should give you some idea of how wild CNN were at that time of their career.

Big Pun Tricked N.O.R.E. Into Buying Him KFC, N.O.R.E. Was Later Shocked At His Passing

“I think Busta Rhymes and Pun are the only two people who can make me do things I don’t want to do.”-N.O.R.E.

In 1999, Big Pun, born Christopher Rios, was put into a weight loss program at Duke University to battle his morbid obesity at the time. When longtime friend and collaborator N.O.R.E. came to visit, Pun used his often talked about persuasive skills and some faux medical knowledge to help him sway N.O.R.E. into purchasing him some unhealthy food. When NORE initially opposed buying the Kentucky Friend Chicken, Pun dropped a little medical knowledge he learned. “I found out, the fat is just in the skin,” N.O.R.E recalled the late Pun saying.  After Pun’s unfortunate passing on  February 7th 2000, N.O.R.E was so traumatized and shocked by his close friends death that he says he had an actual conversation with Pun’s corpse at his funeral.

N.O.R.E.’s Last Time Seeing Chris Lighty Was As Chris’ Daughter Entered College

“My father died July 3rd, 1998. Chris Lighty started managing me June 1998. Maybe May. At least 3 months before the N.O.R.E album came out. So essential Chris Lighty kind of in a funny way took my father’s position.“-N.O.R.E

The last time Noreaga laid eyes on his longtime manager and close friend, Chris Lighty was as Ligthy watched his daughter enter college. N.O.R.E, as well as other entertainers close with Lighty vehemently suggest that Lighty was too happy and content with life to commit suicide, which has been his official cause of death since his August 2012 passing.

N.O.R.E. is releasing his sixth studio album, entitled Student of the Game on April 6th.

Check below for the recently released music video for the song “Built Pyramids” featuring Large Professor off Student of the Game:

Two Separate Legal Battles Begin Over Aaliyah’s Music

(AllHipHop News)  There are two lawsuits brewing over music by deceased R&B singer Aaliyah.

A publishing company named Reservoir Media Management is suing Craze Productions for illegally selling tracks off Aaliyah’s self-titled 2001 album on iTunes according to TMZ.

In the lawsuit, Reservoir is claiming that they purchased the rights to those songs last year and that Craze does not have permission to sell them.

Craze is an independent record label and film distributor that was started in 2004. The company has had issues with copyright concerns in the past.

In 2011 three of the company’s YouTube channels were allegedly suspended due to violation of YouTube’s copyright policy.

Currently, the iTunes page for the Aaliyah album lists the LP under Craze Productions.

In the suit Reservoir states that the songs are not legit and wants a judge to order that they be removed. Reservoir is also seeking an unannounced amount of money in the lawsuit.

Reservoir’s website also has tracks from Aaliyah available for download, and it provides a request option to license the material as well as tracks from Aaliyah’s other albums One In A Million, I Care 4 U, and the soundtrack to Romeo Must Die.

The legal battle between Reservoir and Craze is just the latest court room contest over Aaliyah’s music.

Last month music producer Jeffery Walker II (aka J-Dub) sued Blackground Records, Barry Hankerson, his son Jomo Hankerson, and Black Fountain Music in Georgia claiming that he is owed hundred’s of thousands of dollars in royalties from working on Aaliyah’s music back in 2000 and 2001.

Aaliyah’s projects were released on Blackground Records which was started by her uncle Barry Hankerson. The label is currently a part of Universal Music Group.

Walker claims the he never received royalty checks between 2003-2011, because the Hankersons forged his signature, cashed those royalty checks intended for him, and then deposited the money in Blackground Records’ account.

As a result he was taxed on income he never received and now owes the I.R.S. taxes on $262,580 worth of income from 2004-2011. He says the Hankersons cost him nearly $500,000 in total.

Walker’s complaint does state that Blackground records subsidiary Black Fountain Music was purchased by Reservoir Media Management in 2012.

Both cases are still pending.

Wyclef Jean Speaks On Chief Keef, Lil Wayne, & The Evolution Of Hip-Hop

(AllHipHop News) “What is real Hip-Hop?” is a question that has been asked since its inception. As the culture continues to expand artistically and geographically some see parts of Hip-Hop’s new direction as a fake interpretation of the true essence while others feel it is an inevitable growth as younger generations take the lead.

Former Fugees member Wyclef Jean seems to be in the latter group.

“[Hip-Hop’s] a lifestyle that’s around the entire world,” Wyclef tells the thedrop.fm. “A form of expression through the youth, that at the time, whatever their environment is going through they are going to reflect it in the music.”

In the interview Wyclef also addresses some of the more polarizing forms of recent rap music like Psy’s hit single “Gangnam Style,” Chief Keef’s brand of street rap, and Lil Wayne’s controversial “Emmett Till” line from Future’s “Karate Chop (Remix)”.

[ALSO READ: Family of Emmett Till Sends Prayers to Lil Wayne]

On Gangnam Style:

You have graffiti and dance culture, that you constantly see, like “Gangnam Style,” which you can clearly see is inspired by an MC Hammer video, parts of the culture shares spaces.

On Chief Keef:

I can hear Chief Keef and appreciate him the same way I did N.W.A. when they were coming out and showing you what their area felt like.

On Lil Wayne’s Emmett Till Line:

I think that’s his form of expression. If I said it as Wyclef Jean, I would be wrong because you know what I stand for, everything I stand for I already said… So you can’t dwell on anyone, I can’t have an opinion on that because knowledge of self is key. His opinion is his opinion.

Regarding the Emmitt Till line, Wyclef did go on to say that he would prefer to have a personal conversation with Wayne about the reference rather than speaking through the press.

He did publicly praise the work of one young emcee that has also been making a lot of headlines over the last few months.

“I love Hip-Hop when I hear the innovation of Kendrick Lamar, where you can hear a CD from beginning to end,” admitted Wyclef.

Clef recently paid homage to Hip-Hop’s Golden Era artists and shouted out members of the culture’s new school on his track “Hip Hop.” On the song Wyclef talks about the connection between rap’s past and present.

Wyclef is set to release his new mixtape April Showers later this spring.

Daily Word: Keep Taking Chances!!

TO HEAR THE AUDIO VERSION OF THE DAILY WORD **CLICK HERE

Happy Thursday my brave and courageous! Welcome to the day you continue to not be smart enough to know when to give up! Today’s Daily Word is dedicated to taking chances! Confession: I am a serial chance taker! I have probably failed at more things than I have succeeded at, and despite that fact I continue to take more chances on a daily basis! Most people view this a crazy, insane, and even irrational but if they knew like I knew they would understand that taking chances is the best way to get what you deserve out of life. What stops most people from taking chances is fear and scarcity mentality. What we need to realize is that no matter how things look right now, they can always get better! Understand that the universe is abundant so never be afraid to give up good to get to great! Even if you have to take a step back in order to take a step forward, staying focused and keeping your eyes on the prize will make your move more than worth it. So go ahead…. Keep taking chances! and if at first, second or third, you don’t succeed…. Keep trying until you get it! NOTHING CAN STOP SOMEONE WHO REALLY WANTS SOMETHING!! The World is YOURS and Everything in it! Hip-Hop Rumors: Does Drake Have Shooters On the Team? More Weeknd Rumors!

Most is quiet on the home front with these dudes, but there are a couple of new developments. First of all, it looks like The Weeknd is naming his new album Kissland. That’s pretty good for the ladies and the drug-addicted male fans he may have. As for me, I’m not really checking for it, respectfully. But, dude has apparently made his way in the game and he’s not looking back at Drake or anybody else for that matter. As for Drake and the new crew he’s supposedly running with. I heard this crew Reps Up is not as new as I originally suggested.

RELATED: Hip-Hop Rumors: Drake And The Weeknd Beefing?

These street dudes were down with Drake well before Weekend and his hugs and kissy XO movement. Apparently, the Reps Up dude P. Reign caught a very bad gun charge a few years ago and needed some financial help with that. I was told that when Drake rapped, “Loaning a little money and keepin’ them out of prison” was for P. Reign. I cannot confirm nor deny that that is a fact. If so, the Weeknd has a problem. DRAKE GOT GOONS!

Malcolm X’s Grandson Releases Statement ,Details Lengthy Police Investigation

(AllHipHop News) Back in February, reports surfaced that Malcolm X’s grandson and Muslim activist leader, Malcolm Shabazz was arrested by FBI agents.

Over a month and a half later, Shabazz releases a statement addressing the arrest and clearing up any misconceptions.

[ALSO READ: Malcolm X’s Grandson Arrested]

According to the official statement, Shabazz states that he had known since the beginning of 2012 that he was “under investigation by the F.B.I.’s Counter Terrorism Task Force Unit located in Goshen, N.Y.”

While early reports claim he was arrested by FBI agents in an undisclosed location, Shabazz asserts that he was arrested by police from the City of Middletown, N.Y. Police Department.

According to Shabazz, the story goes that he was arrested by Middeltown police officers a few days following him requesting a visa to travel to Iran for The Hollywoodism International Conference.

Out of shock, Shabazz gave officers a fake name and was subsequently charged with grand larceny and false impersonation.

The grand larceny charge was dismissed and he bailed out in two week after not accepting a 90-day jail sentence for the False Impersonation charge.

This arrest was apparently the culmination of months of “a pattern of harassment from law enforcement which is usually reserved for important figures,” according to Shabazz in the statement.

That pattern included, but was not limited to being stopped arrested for disorderly conduct, an arrest for jay walking and inordinate bail amounts.

At one point in late October of 2012, after entering a car with his mother and friends, two police cars converged on their cars and drew guns on the vehicle. Shabazz was being stopped due to warrants out for his arrest, however the statement alleges that an officer by the name of “R. Ribeiro” stated this was Shabazz’s “lucky day” as he actually did not have warrants out for his arrest.

Shabazz was also highly critical of the Lifetime Network’s movie Betty & Coretta which detailed the relationship of the widows of Martin Luther King and Shabazz’s grandfather, Malcolm X:

“This film aside from being poorly acted, and shallow in depth also threatened to inflame old controversies, and open unhealed wounds and to remind the public of sad outcomes without ever identifying B.O.S.S.I., the C.I.A., F.B.I. and other forces that set the climate for my grandfather’s assassination, and made my family a long-suffering casualty of COINTELPRO, and other anti-Black repression programs.”
