Hip-Hop Rumors: GTFOH! Gucci Mane and Selena Gomez?

This is madness! Media TakeOut is charging that there is something going on with Gucci Mane and pop chick Selena Gomez, who is also Justin Beiber’s ex. Apparently, they are both in a movie called “Spring Breakers” and some sparks started flying. But, I don’t know about this one. Smells funny. First of all, they say it happened a year or so ago, when the movie was shot. Secondly…no there is no secondly. No way does this chick go for both Gucci and Beebz. I’m not a belieber! This is what the source said: “We thought it was [odd] that she was in there with [Gucci Mane]. One time [producers] sent security to make sure she was OK.” The insider added, “It almost became a joke, [another employee] said [to Gucci Mane] ‘Watch out or I’m telling Justin.’ [Gucci] was like ‘F**k that lil n***a!”

All this supposedly came from a production assistant.

Anyway, Gucci Mane plays a good suburban kid and Selena plays a drug kingpin. Wait…its the other way around, I think.

EPIC FAIL OF THE DAY…

Damn, J.J.J.

Why’d ya do it?

Jermaine Dupri Talks So So Def 20 Year Anniversary, His Music Legacy and More

Producer and record label owner Jermaine Dupri brought southern Hip-Hop to worldwide audience 20 years before anyone realized the future of rap music was in the south. He then added select blends of the smoothest R&B sounds around with a platinum-adorned roster that featured Da Brat, Kriss Kross, Xscape, Jagged Edge and Bow Wow. Today the label features Fresco Kane and Anthony Hamilton as two of their most recognizable talents, as well as a stable of musicians who are just a hit away from being a household name. While Dupri has been notoriously fickle regarding when, and with whom, he choses to do interviews, I was able to speak with one of music’s preeminent producers regarding the upcoming So So Def 20 Year Anniversary Concert, to be held in Atlanta on Saturday, February 23rd.

I asked JD whether there was a specific moment at which decided to bring his current and former signees together to celebrate 20 years of So So Def.

“I was almost trying to figure out if I was going to do it,” admits Dupri. “The 20 year anniversary was going to happen regardless of whether I was going to do something about it or not. This year marks that 20 years. It was like, do I pay attention to it and take advantage of it or do I wait, thinking it will become more legendary, then do it?

[ALSO READ “EXCLUSIVE: Jermaine Dupri Hosts Private Dinner for So So Def Family”]

“A good friend of mine, Chris Lighty, died last year,” he continued. “That struck me to the core and said ‘Jermaine, you should take advantage of a lot of things that you have done or can do because you never know what will happen’. You can’t control what’s going to happen to everybody. The fortunate thing about this concert is I get to do the show right now and everybody is healthy, alive and ready to go. People want to see them and they want to be seen. It was bad it had to be sponsored by something sad, but I consider that a wake up call.”

There once was a time when Jermaine Dupri’s name was mentioned among the elite players in the rap game. Those old enough, and wise enough, remember those times and still hold his abilities in extremely high regard. However, a skill that is often overlooked at many labels is logistics. Like most successful men, Dupri is a marvel at figuring out the “hows” and “whens” of a situation relative to his resources. I asked Jermaine if he thought this trait is appreciated within his realm of influence.

“Creating good music and bringing talent into the music business. I think that’s what I will go down in history as the person who brought a lot of people that you know of into the music business,” explained Dupri.

“I make it look really, really easy. I make it look as if it’s not as complicated as it really is. There are certain people on this earth that people talk to, and people say things to, and they don’t even believe that you’ve been through any tough times and nothing is difficult for you.”

“For example, some of my homies were talking about who we should bring out on the show,” said Dupri. “They’re like ‘Oh, if you don’t have Hov there’ and all this and all that’, and I’m sitting there thinking ‘Y’all guys are not really paying attention to the fact that it has been an everyday thing for me to get all my artists to perform’. For them to say ‘Oh, you gotta get Ludacris’ as if things of that nature are never impossible. It’s not impossible but it’s a task to pull all this s### together. It’s not an easy thing. I definitely feel people overlook some of the things I’m able to do, and make look easy.”

In January Atlanta’s Mayor Kasim Reed was in attendance as Jermaine Dupri made the official announcement for the tour. Initially I felt it was a bit strange for an elected official to have anything to say about a rap concert. But I soon reminded myself of how much of an ambassador Dupri has been for the city since day one.

“All I’ve ever done was try to get people to come to Atlanta, try to direct people to Atlanta and try to get people to understand why Atlanta is the best city in the world,” said Jermaine. “For the most part, you know that I’ve been pro-ATL. So, it’s only right that we get that kind of attention from the city. I’m prone to not bother people, and just do things that don’t involve a lot of people. Because you can get caught up. I am that type of guy that avoids certain things, going all the way around them without bringing people in. But its been so many times when people say ‘Jermaine, why you ain’t call us?’ So So Def 20 year anniversary only happens one time. So, I had to make sure the Mayor was involved. There were certain things that had to take place.”

And what can fans expect from a concert that is being described as contemporary urban music’s answer to Motown 25?

“Well, the one thing that people can expect is to come to a concert and hear hit after hit after hit,” he explained. “People talk about this but you will go to this concert and never hear any filler. The one thing that you can expect is to come to the concert and hear all the hits from everybody. We’re not going to play around with doing stuff just to have a concert. It’s too much music to do that.”

Just when the interview was whizzing along at a comfortable pace, I had to go and get inquisitive. I mentioned that dreaded word that makes industry vets cringe: relevant. How does Dupri remain relevant?

“The funny part about this music business is people use that word relevant kind of loosely. If you create as much as I’ve created it’s hard not to be relevant,” he quipped. “Today, people use that word relevant to mean you have to be a new rapper. But a new rapper is trying to get to a place where you like them for more than just one song. It’s crazy, because I don’t even know that I care to be relevant like that. Relevant rappers only have one or two songs to perform. They don’t really have anything you can really hold on to or remember them for. It’s hard not to be when you’ve created this much music.”

For those who still are cramming to understand the true impact of So So Def, Jermaine put it this way.

“If you elevate yourself and get to a certain standing in life, you are that person until someone breaks that barrier. Michael Jordan is still relevant until this day and he hasn’t played in 10 years. The reason why he’s relevant is, for one, nobody has come out with a better basketball shoe than he has. Second, nobody playing now has more rings than him. Kobe’s close but it doesn’t look like he’s going to get it this year. I live by that rule. Usher’s ‘Confessions’ album, for example. Nobody in urban music has surpassed that many records yet. Until that happens it’s hard for me to say that I’m not relevant because people are still chasing things that I’ve done. I’m chasing after those producers that came before me and I still haven’t caught them. That’s how I play the game.”

[ALSO READ: Da Brat Talks So So Def 20th Anniversary]

Not long after the concert announcement was made former Xscape lead singer Kandi Burruss was asked would she perform to which she no, citing her own business dealings as the reason why. Burress, who has recently embarked on a gospel career, is also alleged to have slept with Dupri while a member of the group-marking the begining of the end for a very successful music group.

“I don’t know nothing about it, personally. I heard what I heard, but there’s so much positivity about this concert that it’s hard for me to even pay attention to that,” said Dupri of the Kandi fling allegations.

“My analogy is this: So So Def is like a high school and everybody goes to the high school then they graduate and go on about their life. I look at it as all these kids went to So So Def High and they have the chance to participate in the class reunion if they truly understand what the class reunion is about. The majority of them do, some of them don’t. Some I had to talk to longer than others to get them to understand what it is that we’re doing. If you heard anything about anyone not being in the show it’s because they don’t know the importance of it. That’s partially what’s wrong with America right now. A lot of people don’t know the importance of life and they don’t take advantage of things they should. You have to teach them to, what I mean? I’m not the type of person whose not going to take the time out to see somebody. I’m down to show anybody how important this concert is.”

“I stopped doing interviews. I said I would never do interviews again because I felt like it’s redundant. People twist what I say and start asking these questions that have nothing to do with what I’m trying to sell. So, I stopped doing interviews. Then I put myself back on the interview block for this concert because that’s how important I feel it is to me. I feel like I can’t let this happen without everybody in the world knowing about it. I want people to know that we’re doing a show that nobody else in the music industry can do. Not Bad Boy, not Death Row, not Cash Money not Def Jam. This hasn’t been done since Motown 25.”

So So Def’s 20 year Anniversary Concert Saturday, February 23rd at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, Georgia. A 20 song “Best of So So Def” compilation is currently in the works as well.

EXCLUSIVE: Jermaine Dupri Hosts Private Dinner for So So Def Family

(AllHipHop News) Last night (February 21), Jermaine Dupri kicked off the So So Def 20th Anniversary Weekend by treating his So So Def roster to an intimate dinner at a top-secret location in Atlanta.

Artists such as Bow Wow, Chris Kelly (Kris Kross), Da Brat, Jagged Edge, LaTocha and Tamika Scott (Xscape), Dondria, Bonecrusher, Youngbloodz, Dem Franchize Boyz, and Fresco Kane along with veteran music exec Michael Mauldin (JD’s father) were in attendance, as JD and staff served the guests a lavish meal prepared by Chef Michael Hebb and custom “Afroman” cake by Jaxon Pastries.

The gathering was a happy reunion, as many artists hadn’t seen each other in years – some had never even met!

“In all these years, this is the first time that Bow Wow and Chris Kelly (Kriss Kross) have ever met,” Dupri announced during the dinner. “Bow Wow is a product of Kris Kross, so the fact that we can bring everyone together like this means a lot.”

“This is my way of saying thank you for helping me build the So So Def empire,” Dupri continued. “This is a historical moment, so tonight I’m celebrating you. Sit back, relax…I’m gonna serve you. But enjoy it, because that will never happen again!”

Jerry Seinfeld Speaks On Appearing On Wale’s Next Album

(AllHipHop News) Wale’s upcoming album The Album About Nothing will have a huge co-sign from the man who inspired the LP’s title. Comedic legend Jerry Seinfeld announced in a video last month that he will appear on the Maybach Music Group emcee’s next project, and he recently spoke with Rolling Stone about venturing into the world of Hip-Hop.

“It’s always fun to go into somebody else’s thing and vice versa. So that in itself is just reason enough to do it,” says Seinfeld.

Wale has always had an affinity for Seinfeld’s classic 1990’s sit-com that was affectionately known as “The Show About Nothing.” His breakout 2008 project, The Mixtape About Nothing, featured audio samples from the program and a cameo from the show’s co-star Julia Louis-Dreyfus on “The Vacation from Ourselves.” In 2010, Wale released the sequel More About Nothing, and the Nigerian-American’s third studio album will continue the Seinfeld theme.

Seinfeld admits he enjoyed Wale’s take on his show, “I think someone sent [The Mixtape About Nothing] to me and I got a kick out of it. And Wale came to a show… and we hung out a little bit. And he’s a very nice kind of a guy.”

Seinfeld’s role on The Album About Nothing will be an extension of the random, observational comedic style made famous by his show’s characters.  He went into the booth and just recorded his thoughts on various ideas as people in the studio asked him different questions.

In the interview Seinfeld also talks about how Hip-Hop and stand-up comedy are so closely related, going so far to say that “there’s no difference.” This will not be the first time Wale has collaborated with a comedian. He teamed up with Lil Duval for “Fairy Tales.”

Rappers seem to love inviting comedians to jump on their albums to add a bit a comic relief. Dave Chappelle appeared throughout Reflection Eternal’s Train of Thought.  Kevin Hart could be heard on T.I.’s F### A Mixtape and Game’s Jesus Piece. Katt Williams was closely affiliated with Dipset and added jokes to Lil Kim’s “Shut Up B####.” Kanye West albums almost don’t seem complete without a feature from a popular comedian (even if impersonated)- DeRay Davis as Cedric The Entertainer (The College Dropout), DeRay Davis as Bernie Mac (Late Registration), and Chris Rock (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy).

Wale’s The Album About Nothing is set to be released in 2013.

Drake’s Closer To Another Chart Record With 30th Top 10 R&B/Hip-Hop Hit

(AllHipHop News) YMCMB rapper-singer Drake edged closer to breaking another Billboard chart record this week when his latest single “Started From The Bottom” jumped from 19-3 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. This is Drake’s 30th appearance on the chart’s top ten trailing only Lil Wayne (34) and R. Kelly (32).

Drake already owns the record for the most #1’s on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart for a rapper. He took the title from Jay-Z last August as a guest on 2 Chain’z “No Lie.” It was the tenth time Drake topped the chart – 7 as a featured artist. His first single to break into the top ten and reach number one was 2009’s “Best I Ever I Had.”

[ALSO READ: AHH Stray News: Drake Surpasses Jay-Z]

The Toronto based artist also passed Diddy on the list for most #1 rap songs last February. His collaboration with Nicki Minaj, “Make Me Proud,” became his 11th single to reach number 1 on Billboard’s Rap chart.

“Started From The Bottom” will appear in the number two spot of the March 2 edition of Billboard’s rap chart behind Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “The Heist.”

Drake also appears at #3 on the same chart for A$AP Rocky’s “Fu**in’ Problem” and at #4 along with Lil Wayne and Future for “Love Me.” Psy’s “Gangnam Style” comes in at #5, and “I’m Different,” “Swimming Pools (Drank),” “All Gold Everything,” “Feel This Moment,” and “I Cry” round out the top ten.

The rest of the top ten for the R&B/Hip-Hop chart:  “Thrift Shop” (1), “Suit & Tie” (2), “Girl On Fire” (4), “Fu**in’ Problems” (5), “Love Me” (6), “Diamonds” (7), “Pour It Up” (8), “Adorn” (9), and “I’m Different” (10).

“Started From The Bottom” is the first single off Drake’s upcoming third album Nothing Was The Same.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Left Eye Pulled A Gun On WHO?

Here is an old school rumor, but a goodie. And one I can actually put a name to!

Everybody knows Left Eye was a bit on the wild side. She was the C in TLC and the “C” was for CRAZY! But we loved her! She was such a cute, little thing. But, her heart was big. The rumors have started with the revelation that there is a TLC movie. But, Clive Davis is in this one and he’s recently admitted to being GAY (or bisexual). I’m not sure if there is a such thing as bisexuality for men, but that’s another story. Anyway, TLC’s financial woes are well documented. Most people blamed Peebles, the old R&B singer from the 80’s. Here she is in the 80s.

Well, she’s a looker too. Anyway, they say Left Eye rolled up on Clive Davis with a gun and wanted to know were her money at! Clearly, she didn’t get the money like she wanted but she gets G-props for doing it. Maybe that’s why she fit in with Death Row so well after she bounced out. Remember that?

Rapper Kenny Clutch the Target of Las Vegas Strip Shootout

(AllHipHop News) Today (February 21) a Las Vegas shootout was the subject national media coverage as three people were killed in the heart of Las Vegas’ strip of hotels and casinos.

The shootout was part of an ongoing dispute in the valet parking area of the Aria Resort and Casino that eventually carried out into the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard South and Flamingo Road.

Killed in the shootout was Bay Area rapper Kenny Clutch, shot to death in his Maserati after it crashed into a taxi that subsequently exploded and burned the driver and its passenger beyond recognition.

The passenger in Clutch’s car luckily only suffered an arm injury and was taken to Las Vegas’ University Medical Center. According to The Las Vegas Review Journal the passenger is cooperating with police.

Vicki Greco, who legally represented Clutch for several speeding tickets, said Clutch was the father of two children and wasn’t a gang member.

DMX’s Wife Takes Shot At 50 Cent Over Cancellation Of “Starters Wives Confidential

(AllHipHop News) DMX’s wife Tashera Simmons has weighed in on the cancellation of her reality show “Starter Wives Confidential,” which was recently canceled from the TLC network’s lineup of programming.

Tashera Simmons was one of the ex-wives/girlfriends featured on the show, which also included ex-girlfriends/wives of Floyd Mayweather Jr., Lamar Odom and rapper 50 Cent.

While 50 Cent has claimed in reports that he had a hand in “Starter Wives Confidential’s” cancellation, TLC recently issued a statement after the show was axed, blaming bad ratings as the reason the plug pulled was pulled.

In a statement released today (February 21), Tashera Simmons lashed out, claiming the show was canceled due to “many inflated egos.”

“I am no stranger to television and what just happened was unheard of and completely unorthodox,” Tashera Simmons told AllHipHop.com. “There were millions of dollars and a lot of hard work put into this project by the producers, staff and my costars. It’s hard to believe that there are still some fundamental issues in our society about women speaking up or having a voice.”

According to Tashera Simmons, “Starter Wives Confidential” was more than just a reality show – it was about a group of women “stepping out of the shadows of their ex’s and finding their way in life personally and professionally.”

Tashera Simmons took an obvious shot at rapper 50 Cent, claiming that a double standard existed in the entertainment industry.

“It’s okay for rappers to get on television and tell their story about how many times do were shot or how they were heavily in the drug game, but it’s not okay for women to share their story about their life experiences,” Tashera Simmons said.

Tashera Simmons is working on her memoir titled “Finding Tashera,” in addition to coaching her son Xavier Simmons, as he embarks upon a career in the music business.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Founding Fathers Of Hip-Hop To Boycott Worldstar? Wayne Says No Apology For Bosh!

I wonder how this will play out? I am hearing that a number of the founding fathers of Hip-Hop are looking to get Worldstar shut down or something. I don’t know specifically who yet, but I heard that some of the real founding fathers are stepping up to the plate on this issue, claiming the popular site doesn’t rep Hip-Hop at all. Not sure how effective this will be, but that’s their stance. What say you?

Anyway, I’ve heard a bit more, but I’m not going to say it just yet.

LIL WAYNE ADDRESSES THE MIAMI HEAT DRAMA AND REFUSES TO SAY SORRY TO BOSH!

Say sorry to Bosh, Weezy! That man needs that apology right now!! Anyway, here is what Wayne said in a recent interview, effectively saying sorry to Miami (not the Heat).

“Yeah, I heard about that, that’s what I want to clear up,” Wayne said in an interview when told the entire city of Miami was upset with him. “First of all, I ain’t have a cup. I can’t drink anything. Actually, I had a little bit too much to ‘think’ that night. Yeah, [laughs], I had too many thoughts on my mind that night but let me start off saying I don’t apologzie for that night. I don’t apologize for being who I am. That’s who I am. This is who I am and yes I did say those things. The only thing I do want to take back from saying that night is I said, ‘F LeBron,’ I didn’t mean to say that because me and LeBron are cool and I know his mom and we have a real good relationship. That’s my homie, it just slipped out. Other than that, I don’t take nothing back and like I said, I don’t apologize for being me. This is who I am. Now do you want an explanation for where all that came from?”

As for Bosh’s apology? Nope.

“That ain’t important. Actually I was just having a conversation with Baby when I said that or whatever I said. Like I said, those were my fans in there. I wasn’t on a television show, I wasn’t on a radio station, I wasn’t in front of nobody’s video camera. … That was my party and my stage, I can say what I want to sweetheart.”
