Daily Word: Everyday Is Your Birthday!!

Happy Tuesday, my Lovers of Life!

Welcome to the day you realize how blessed and highly favored you really are. Today’s Daily Word is dedicated to reflecting and moving onward! Thirty-two years ago from today, my mother gave birth to her final child: a baby boy, who most people told her she was crazy for even having… See, my mom was an older woman, struggling to get by when she decided to give birth to me, so not only were there economic disadvantages of having another child, but the risks were life threatening as well.

Needless to say, 32 years later, I give thanks everyday to my mom and her courage, for giving my life a chance! Each year around this time, I reflect on the good and the bad, and realize how far I came and how much further I have to go! They say hindsight is 20/20, so make sure that as you live your life, you are treating everyday like your birthday! Always reflect on where you’ve been, how you got there, and where you want to go!

Many times, we complain and wish things would be different, but I guarantee if you would just put your whole life into perspective, you would realize how blessed you really are. Everyday is
a bonus, so the fact that you are still here is a clear indication that you have purpose! Never take for granted the precious gift of life that you were given! Many people are not afforded the opportunities that you have readily at your disposal! Don’t let your gifts go to waste! Take full advantage of your life and maximize your potential!

Lessons From a Legend: Too Short on Pimping, Surviving Controversy, and Living vs. Dying

Todd Shaw, better known as Too Short, is a Hip-Hop legend. With over 20 albums under his belt in a career that started during Reagan’s first Presidential term, he has been through a lot. He is a pioneer of independent music, one of the few rappers who recorded with Tupac and Biggie, and, perhaps most famously, brought pimp culture to pop culture.

When AllHipHop.com spoke with Too Short for our continued “Lessons From a Legend” series, the West Coast vet had plenty of wisdom to share:

Lesson #1: Respect the Audience

I feel that somewhere along the line I had always intended for it [rap] to be a mixture of funny sh*t, ignorant sh*t, social commentary type sh*t-just a reflection of me. But somewhere down the line, people liked the dirty stuff a little better.

I think I kept integrity in the game as far being a mascot for the pimp life. I’ve always had strong ties with the pimp community. I’ve had guys tell me that the only thing they listen to when they take their girls to work is Too Short. Or girls want to hear that sh*t, it’s like motivation music to get everybody in the right frame of mind. And even though some of my biggest records were “The Ghetto”, “Life is… Too Short”, they don’t really go down in the Too Short legacy. The one thing I do have peace of mind with is that when I did put out conscious records as singles, [they] did really good.

Lesson #2: Save Money Up Instead of Showing It Off

When you come from nothing and you get a whole lot of something, you have a tendency to splurge on sh*t that you don’t need. And it was hard to tell me when I was 21, or anybody else who’s 21, not to spend your money on stupid sh*t. But when you get to be my age, you look back and think the stupidest sh*t I ever did was keep buying jewelry on top of jewelry on top of cars. It’s just a nasty habit to look back and think about how much went down the drain.

Lesson #3: Don’t Believe the Hype

Ice Cube came out with a [group] called Westside Connection. He was saying that the media that covers Hip-Hop was not showing just due to West coast rappers. At the same time, Tupac was getting shot and robbed in New York. Even though he loved New York and he loved his homeboy Biggie, he came out of that experience [thinking] in his mind that Biggie and Puffy set him up.

The East Coast/West Coast really was about Suge and Pac (being) mad at Biggie and Puffy. That’s what it was. Everybody else and the media fed into it and started putting it on records. Rappers started pretending like they had to take sides and sh*t. If we didn’t lose Biggie and ‘Pac, I’d say it was just a bunch of total bullsh*t. But we lost two of the greatest rappers ever, and the story goes that there was an East Coast/West Coast war. But I never fed into the sh*t.

Lesson #4: Watch Your Words

Earlier this year, XXL did the little swindle on me by posting that sh*t up on the Internet and trying to make it seem like I was giving little kids advice about sex. In reality, XXL was actually participating in some online joke or some sh*t. But then when they posted it, they posted it as “Too Short’s Advice to Kids.” And basically, they didn’t even run the f*ckin’ story.

I was at XXL for two hours for an interview about music. The lesson learned from me in the new social media age is how to be responsible with what you’re saying. You know what they do to politicians and sh*t. It’s like anything; they take that sh*t out of context and just run the f*ckin’ story with a piece of a sentence.

Part of the reason I did “Couples Therapy” was because [XXL] put a bunch of negative sh*t out on me like that. And I was like let me do something in the same timeframe that’s positive.

Lesson #5: Sleep When You’re Dead

You’ve always got to set goals for yourself. You’ve got to work toward something. Secondly, you’ve got to overachieve. And then, and most (importantly), is once you achieve your goals and you get to where you want to be, then you gotta work harder than you ever worked. And that’s the secret. It’s to work harder after you make it. Some people put their all into it just to get to a certain level and when they get there, they relax. Don’t relax.

Album Review: Saigon’s “Greatest Story Never Told 2: Bread and Circuses”

Bread and Circuses is a concept used to describe the political tactic of using cheap food and entertainment to win the right to rule in ancient Rome. And, according to Abandoned Nation’s Saigon, entertainment and distraction is not only used to win in modern day politics, but also in modern day music. Ironically, for his second official studio album, Greatest Story Never Told 2: Bread and Circuses, Tha Yardfather gets distracted by label woes, loss, and lack of recognition, and at times, it’s hardly entertaining. But, through the second-rate production and thug threats, Saigiddy does manage to squeeze out a few jewels to give light to some modern issues in a new perspective.

Rap vs Real” is a new take on the “fake vs. real” concept where Tha Yardfather uses a “Rap” scenario, which he deems as fake scenario, as the effect of a corrupted reality. Just Blaze’s crisp drums appear on the song as Saigon breaks down illusions to reveal some ugly truths:

“Them hundreds keys you said you flipped in the trap? THAT’S RAP! /

And Max B fighting for that appeal. THAT’S REAL! /

That little b***h you let dance on your lap? THAT’S RAP! /

The fact that she been molested since she was lil. THAT’S REAL!”

After the first two opening tracks, Just Blaze’s presence is missed as Saigon tries his best to lend some heartfelt words of encouragement to pursue ones dreams, but is plagued by DJ Corbett’s off-beat acoustic guitar on “Let Me Run”. A trend of lackluster organ production continues on “Not Like Them”, where Sai and Styles P rap about being “Not Like Them”, without really giving you a reason besides taking their word for it. But, there is some meat to go along with this bread.

The Game Changer” finds Saigon venting out some anguish with Atlantic Records by telling the story of his first single from his debut album with Trey Songz, which he claims was expected to be a sexual record by his former label.

Now all along they expecting we do a song on how we bang the girls /

I said, “Naw lil n***a we about to change the world /

When I turned it in expecting a grin /

They gave a n***a a look like never again.

The album’s predictable single “Blown Away” has Saigon connecting the common end that the mortar’s of Black progress all share and how he fears it for himself. Dessert is served once you get to the album’s gem “Our Babies 2”. On the track, dark piano keys and epic strings spur Sai into raising some good political questions like why Osama Bin Laden was killed without a trial (“They killed Bin Laden and everybody just smiled / if he did what was allege than yeah, that maggot was foul / question I ask you: What happen to his trial?”). However, besides this song and the two versions of “Blown Away”, there isn’t much politically said on GSNT 2, which brings wonder why Sai would want to perpetuate such an ambitious political theme on the album in the first place.

Although Saigon’s testament to delivering positive messages in Hip-Hop has been unquestioned, since his classic compilation mixtape, Welcome To Saigon, or even last year’s debut, The Greatest Story Never Told, he seems to feel under-appreciated for his lyrical consciousness. Instead of continuing his track record of uplifting the ‘hood, GSNT seems to seek validation for his past musical efforts. Hopefully in the next chapter of The Yardfather’s inspiring story, he’ll have more substance to make Hip-Hop “SAY YES” once again.
