Soul Legend Get To Re-Claim Rights To Hit Hip-Hop Singles “Whoomp! (There It Is) and “Dazzey Duks”

(AllHipHop News) The rights to two of the best known songs in Hip-Hop history were granted to soul music legend Al Bell, the former head of Stax Records, once home to acts like Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, Isaac Hayes and others.

Last week, a judge granted Al Bell the rights to the hit singles “Whoomp! (There It Is)” by Tag Team and “Dazzey Duks,” by Duice, ending a 10-year battle over the songs.

After Al Bell’s association with Stax Records ended in the mid-1970s, the executive fell on hard times, until he launched Bellmark Records.

Bellmark Records released three hit singles: Tag Team’s “Whoomp! (There It Is),” Duice’s “Dazzey Duks” and Prince’s “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.”

But Bellmark Records also fell into financial trouble and filed for Chapter 7 in 1997.

DM Records acquired the assets of Bellmark Records and began licensing the two songs in question.

Al Bell disputed the ownership of the songs, claiming his publishing company Alvert Music, which never filed for bankruptcy, owned the rights to  “Whoomp! (There It Is),” “Dazzey Duks.”

A judge sided with Bellmark Records and awarded Al Bell $2.5 million in damages.

EXCLUSIVE: DMX Reveals Details About Almost Becoming A “Bad Boy” And How Biggie Made Him Appreciate A Smile

(AllHipHop News) DMX’s new album, Undisputed is in stores now, and for many fans, there is no disputing that musically, Dark Man X is back on top of his game. In an exclusive, sit-down with AllHipHop.com, the rapper reminisces back to his unsigned artist days and shares a story about nearly signing a record deal with Bad Boy – but being overlooked in favor of The Lox.

“You know the Lox got signed before I did. They were a “safer” group,” said DMX. “Puff signed them, and you know it was a blessing and a curse, because they were happy they got signed and they were on “The Benjamins”, but then he [Diddy] made them jiggy and put them in suits and made them write lyrics for him and took their publishing and raped them.”

DMX goes on to explain how Damion “D-Roc” Butler set up a meeting between himself and Diddy, but Diddy passed on signing him because he didn’t feel that DMX was a marketable artist.

“The thing I respect about Puff was that he told me to my face [he said], ‘his voice is too ruff, he’s not marketable.'” You got to respect that.”

In the interview, DMX also shares his fond memories of Biggie and explains how Biggie helped him appreciate a smile.

“I never saw Biggie smile until after he died, [it was] in the ‘Hypnotize’ video,” said DMX. “When I saw it, I was like wow, he was really enjoying his life; and it got taken away from him. It was then that I cherished a smile.”

Check out the exclusive video interview below where DMX shares details about almost signing with Diddy, and explains how Biggie Smalls helped him appreciate a smile:

Hip-Hop Rumors: What Producer Is The Tax Man After Now?

Super producer and artist Sean Garrett has produced 17 number one hit singles for artists including Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Janet Jackson, and Mary J. Blige, so he has to be caked up, right? Wrong!

According to TMZ, the State of Georgia filed a tax lien against Garrett earlier this year, claiming he owes $732,553.57 in back taxes for the years 2006 and 2007.  Sources close to Garrett say the tax bill stems from an error made by an ex employee of Sean’s — and they claim Sean is taking steps to resolve the issue.

As if that wasn’t enough,, Garrett has somehow gone broke and allegedly owes American Express $108,084.62 in unpaid bills. The credit card company is currently suing Garrett, who owes double the amount of his credit limit.

A rep for Sean Garrett told TMZ, “The lawsuit has no merit. The charges in question are result of identity theft and fraudulent transactions that have been in dispute by Sean’s accounting team with AmEx for quite some time. He and his team are currently looking into all options including a private investigation.”

Damn, son! I hope he can get his tax and AMEX situations worked out, credit card fraud takes a long time to prove and dealing with the IRS is no walk in the park. His credit score must be in the dumps right now.

Mixtape Review: Dice Raw’s “Greatest Rapper Never: The Mixtapes Vol. 1”

If you’re familiar with the Hip-Hop scene in Philadelphia, then you should be familiar with Dice Raw. As the principal collaborator and writer for The Roots, the Grammy-winning MC has been cranking out dope rhymes for quite some time, but with the release of his latest project, The Greatest Rapper Never: The Mixtapes Vol. 1, he’s out to show off a bit of his diversity as a solo artist. Although there are some skippables here, the project overall is an accurate portrayal of his unique ability to make different styles of songs, which is a talent that some can’t hope to claim.

Keep in mind that this is indeed a mixtape; from completely going in over Rick Ross’ “Hold Me Back” in a song aiming at Mitt Romney (“Tea Party”), to his radio-aimed “Crybaby” (complete with the unfortunate Auto-tuned hook), there’s several instances that remind you so. However, even throughout those chances taken, there are dope songs that fans familiar with Raw with gravitate and rock to. “My Name Raw” is one of those simple, yet aggressive songs that shows him lyrically flexing, while “Fake Emcees” has him addressing the rappers who act hard, but stay enclosed with human shields/bodyguards.

Although the first half of the LP has an aggressive tone, Raw changes it up towards the end as he reflects with the last few songs. “Dining Alone” has him reflecting over being left, while “Rear Window” has potent content within it as well. The last few songs on Greatest Rapper Never show the traditional ability of Dice Raw; more listeners will be able to rock it than the other misses such as “Crybaby”, and the Nicki Minaj-sampled vocal flip for “The Illest”.

And speaking of rockets, that was essentially what he tossed at Mitt Romney on “Tea Party”. It’s so blatant and disrespectful, it almost comes off as sloppy, but he definitely gets his point across. He’s also one of the few artists to throw tentativeness to the wind and state exactly how he feels on that aspect, but then again, Dice has never been one to hold his tongue.

The best thing about the project might also the worst thing about it; because it’s a plethora of random songs it can come off as lackluster, but the songs that are done well easily outweigh the bad. It wouldn’t be a bad thing to consider it more as an experiment, as Raw is prepping the second edition of his solo trilogy, The Greatest Rapper Never, and could very well be testing the waters to see which songs stick and which don’t. For now, his sampler platter of a project should keep his fans satisfied until the main course.

Rating: 7/10

Hip-Hop Rumors: Diss Or Punchline – Lil’ Wayne Says “No Frank Ocean, I’m Straight”

As happy as I am to see the Hip-Hop phrase “no h###” go away, I’m not sure this is the right way to flip it. In his remix for Future’s song “Turn Off The Lights”, Lil’ Wayne replaces the phrase “no h###” and instead says “No Frank Ocean.” Check out the full lyric below:

“Tell her I skate/I ain’t got no worries/No Frank Ocean, I’m straight.”

So I have to ask, is this a diss or a punchline? You can check out the track below. Do you think “No Frank Ocean” is going to catch on the way “no h###” did?

Missy Elliot Releases First Two Singles Off New Timbaland-Produced Album, Talks Aaliyah Album Controversy

(AllHipHop News) Missy Elliot reunited with her musical muse super producer Timbaland on UStream to announce the iTunes release of her first two singles “9th Inning” and “Triple Threat”. During a UStream interview last night (September 17) with Mona Scott-Young and a legion of fans on social media sites, Elliot explained excitedly that the two new tracks will be featured on her new album that is due sometime this year.

“I like to call it theatrical Hip-Hop,” says Elliot. “It’s not the Da Real World all over again ,but just the dramatics of the real world is the feeling that I get from this album.”

Even though this will be Elliot’s first release of an entire body of new material in seven years, Timbaland says that their timing couldn’t be better. “I think what’s going on right now is the same ol same ol,” says the legendary producer, who produces every song on the 12-track album.

“The timing is right for what we doing right now. We didn’t pick it. It just happened this way,” he added.

Both Elliot and Timbaland were tight lipped about the featured artists on the album, until a fan asked Elliot if there would be another collaboration with fellow femcees vets Lil Kim, Eve, and Trina, to which Elliot responded sparingly: “I do have something special with us three,” says Elliot. “Fun party record. Keep it fun.”

Host Scott-Young also made sure to ask Elliot and Timbaland about their views on the upcoming, Drake-executive produced Aaliyah album that has caught some recent criticism from fans due to the producing duos lack of involvement.

“A lot of people are asking about the Aaliyah situation. And we’ve had to answer that all day today. So I think we kinda worn out,” said Elliot. “And something set on my heart and said, ‘maybe let’s not talk about it so much because Aaliyah she didn’t represent controversy. She represented peace.’ We just trying to keep positive energy around her name.”

Hip-Hop Rumors: Jay Electronica Leaves His UK Rich Chick?

According to the Daily Mail of the UK, it looks like Jay Electronica has moved on from the rich babe Kate Goldsmith. They are saying that dude had dumped her for somebody else.

Trouble appears to be brewing between Kate Goldsmith and her hip-hop beau Jay Electronica.

Jay has been spending time with stunning Burberry model Cara Delevingne and Kate – who split from her husband, millionaire financier Ben Goldsmith, in June – is not impressed by their blossoming friendship.
A source says: ‘Kate and Jay are having fearful rows as he’s getting too close to Cara for her liking.’
Record company boss Kate, 30, is still living in her marital home in Kensington, West London, with her three young children – just a stone’s-throw away from her New Orleans-born boyfriend, who moved from Belgravia to be near her.

Cara doesn’t live far away, either – her family home is in neighbouring Chelsea.

The Bedales-educated catwalk star, who celebrated her 20th birthday in August, has been dividing her time between Sao Paulo, Ibiza and St Tropez over the summer and recently she was reported to be dating One Direction heart-throb Harry Styles.

However, friends say she has been spending time with 35-year-old Jay when back in London.

Mariah Carey has ended rumors that there is a beef with her and Nicki Minaj. What did you think she would do, confirm?

Usher and Shakira is reportedly going to join “The Voice” and replace Cee-Lo and X-Tina Aggy. the only reason they are bumping them is because both artists are looking to hit their music careers again in a major way.

J. Cole has not made a response to Diggy Simmons’s diss. He probably realizes that Tyrese will murder his career if he should try to make a move on the young son of Run. If you can’t see the sarcasm in that…please….get Lasix.

Wyclef has opened up about why he and Lauryn Hill ain’t cool. In his new book, Purpose, he says Lauryn made is seem like her first born was his. Oh. No. She. Did. Nt.

Jay Electronica has reportedly broken up with his Illuminati babe Kate. More on this later.

EXCLUSIVE: Soulja Boy Accused Of Stealing “Swag Daddy”

(AllHipHop News) Rapper Soulja Boy has been hit with a lawsuit from a Miami producer, who claims the rapper stole the track for his single “Swag Daddy.”

Hip-Hop Frat House and Michael J. Garcia filed the lawsuit against Soulja Boy and his label S.O.D. Money Gang Entertainment Inc.

The lawsuit, which was filed on September 14, claims that Hip-Hop Frat House and Garcia attempted to develop a relationship with Soulja Boy.

A representative for Hip-Hop Frat House submitted the copyrighted track “Racks,” which was produced by Michael J. Garcia, for Soulja Boy to consider.

A copy of the song was submitted to Soulja Boy’s email address, So**********@***il.com.

Despite attempts to follow-up, a representative for Hip-Hop Frat House received no reply from the rapper or his representatives.

They were shocked when they heard Soulja Boy rapping over the track “Swag Daddy,” several months after submitting the musical composition.

“Swag Daddy” was released for commercial sale on the album “21:EP.”

The lawsuit claims that Soulja Boy has created a new brand called “Swag Daddy,” based on the musical composition Hip-Hop Frat House and Garcia own.

They are suing the rapper for damages and attorney fees, to be determined by a jury.

Check out copies of the lawsuit below:
