Linda Perry Says Beyonce Takes Credit For Songs She Didn't Write Because She's Beyonce

(AllHipHop News) Beyonce has apparently taken the adage “giving credit where credit is due” in the wrong direction. In a recent Reddit AMA session, fame Rock artist, Linda Perry addressed Beyonce taking songwriting credits for songs she did not write.

According to Perry, Beyonce and other artists similar to Beyonce take songwriting credits for songs they don’t write due to the assistance their fame gives the song’s popularity:

Thats not songwriting but some of these artists believe if it wasnt for them your song would never get out there so they take a cut just because they are who they are. but everyone knows the real truth even Beyonce. She is talented but in a completely different way.

On numerous occasions Beyonce has stated or intimated that she wrote her hit song “Irreplacable”, particularly in a 2008 Marie Claire where she states “‘I’m sure people think I wrote it about [Jay-Z] or something, but… the obvious person is not the person at all. In a 2012 interview with The Breakfast Club, Ne-Yo, one of the co-writers for “Irreplacable” stated Beyonce only wrote the background harmonies for the song.

  • Eli Pinilla

Beyonce is an entertainer. Performance art. Nothing more nothing less

    • LaurenStar

Beyoncé is an entertainer and artist. As Prince said, she’s incredibly musical. If Linda wants to talk about someone taking credit for song, then she might want to get into a discussion about Elvis. But I won’t hold my breath for that one. But black people better start digging into history for themselves.

      • Jordan

You love race baiting. The difference between Elvis and Beyonce when it comes to writing is that Elvis has never stolen credit. He openly stated he never wrote songs. He did co-write some later work before his death, but that’s less than 10 songs. Bey on the other hand has actually taken credit. You’re on the internet. Use it.

  • maya

    illusions…

  • ursocalledgod

damn I thought she had to be writing these elementary ass songs! that just goes to show who the real ARTISTS are. luther didn’t write but he knew what songs he wanted to put his stamp on. byonce irritates me almost as much as taylor swift and katy perry. the only thing she has on those other two morons is she does actually have a voice and can move. now if she used that voice like it was meant to be used she would reach that upper level of soul singers. Anita, sade, patty, Gladys, Aretha etc

    • Ipullcards

I hear what you’re saying and agree with most of it. But you said Luther didn’t write? We all know smokey Robinson wrote most hits from the 50’s up until the 80’s for Motown.. But nobody shorts those artists do they? And their mostly legends at that

      • ursocalledgod

yea exactly. Luther didn’t write not ONE song he had writers but he knew how to bring that song to life and make it his. like the Motown artists. Elton john never wrote a song either and he’s still legendary because of the way he brings them lyrics to life. Beyoncé is none of that. her songs are corny and simple as hell and do nothing to showcase her voice. she’s concerned with hits and what’s popping now. unfortunately that’s what’s popping right now with these so called “artists” I use that term VERY loosely.

      • Lucky Lefty

so what you’re saying is..beyonce takes songs by songwriters and neglects to make the song sound like hers…

if that’s what you’re saying..you completely negated yourself using luther as an example….furthermore..luther must think beyonce can bring songs to life or i’m sure he would’ve never made a remake of the closer i get to you with her lol…beyonce haters are the dumbest.

      • ursocalledgod

they are both signed to labels byonce was hot at the time luther needed to appeal to a new demographic. do the math little fella. first off i criticized the songs she chooses to sing. they are bubble gum simpleton songs. what i meant by make it yours and put your stamp on it is make something RELEVANT AND TIMELESS that will be associated with your name. i thought you would comprehend that without me having to spell it out. then i remembered beyonce fans are the dumbest.

      • Jordan

You hit the nail right on the head. Beyonce fans will defend to the death even when they are completely wrong.

      • LaurenStar

We defend her because we know people lie on her. Just because this broad is saying it doesn’t make it true. She could simply have an agenda against Beyoncé. Again, why doesn’t Linda want to talk about Elvis taking credit since she wants to start talking about this. Is it because he’s white?

      • Jordan

It is true. Just type in “Beyonce steals credit” in Google. It’s not that hard. Linda was asked about Beyonce. She wasn’t asked about Elvis. The fact that the interviewer questioned her about Beyonce’s credit further proves that Beyonce steals credit. And what does race have to do with songwriting? I don’t understand.

      • Taiana Aubrey

not only are her fans the dumbest but they’re also crazy and possessed lol

      • ursocalledgod

        Lol

      • LaurenStar

Her haters are 10 times that.

      • Taiana Aubrey

And she treats her fans like her haters, pay them no mind. Until Beyonce gives me a check or start paying my bills is when l’ll hop up on these social sites and defend her until then…

      • LaurenStar

Well, I wouldn’t call Michelle Obama, Maria Shriver or Oprah dumb. Some of the brightest women on the planet. Those women are Beyoncé fans. I suggest you clean out your ears if you think that Dangerously in Love or That’s Why You’re Beautiful are bubblegum music. I think Beyoncé haters are dumb. They haven’t watched video of her in the studio working with other songwriters and her ideas going into the song. Also, they don’t know how the system works when it comes to black artists. They’re looking for ways to tear them down. Why doesn’t Linda Perry want to talk about Elvis and him taking credit? Since she wants to broach on this subject. Also, Drake was talking about how Beyoncé was coming up with “bars” for some song he had. The majority of her songs she has written or co-written on. Just so you know the definition of songwriting it does include writing lyrics and melodies.

      • ursocalledgod

That’s the two songs you name LMAO. go get you some Anita, or some Sade, in your system PLEASE! a teenage girl could of wrote that BS.

      • Jordan

Right. Her music is teenage bubblegum music.

      • Jordan

The difference is Luther has never taken credit; Beyonce has. Aaliyah didn’t write a single song either, but it sure sounded like she did. She made the song feel like it was hers. It felt real. Whitney Houston never wrote a song either (well, she has like two co-writing credits), but it felt real with her and showcased her voice. I may never call Beyonce a legend musically, but she is one of the greatest performers of all-time. She’s up there with Michael and Janet when it comes to the stage.

      • LaurenStar

But Beyoncé deserves to take credit, I’ve seen her in the studio bouncing ideas back and forth with other songwriters and some of her ideas go into the song. Songwriting is coming up with lyrics and/or melodies. That is the formal definition. You don’t know people’s agenda that may say differently. Again, Linda Perry doesn’t want to tell anybody about Elvis Pressly taken credit because he’s white and the King of Rock-and-Roll.

      • Jordan

Elvis has NEVER taken credit. He has openly stated he never wrote a song. His exact words: “I never wrote a song in my life.” Beyonce has actually claimed to write her songs, but later it’s proven to be a lie. People she have worked with have called her out on this. She’s a plagiarist. I remember a few years, Rico Love (a producer of hers) said he wrote a song with Solange, Lashawn Daniels, and someone else. No mention of Beyonce, insisting she took credit for what wasn’t her work.

      • Ipullcards

Id def refer to this era as entertainers and not artists… Music artistry I’ll save for a few rappers & r&b acts. There’s still talent there but as you pointed out beyonjay are only concerned with remaining hot & not the content. 99 problems was jay Z’s zenith and beyonce a was the irreplaceable and crazy in love era..

      • maya

Are you saying Elton John doesn’t write? You must have mistyped or something. Elton John wrote mad songs.

      • ursocalledgod

No he has NEVER wrote. Bernie Taupin wrote if not all most of his songs since the beginning. Definitely his hits. Look it up.

    • Dope

You don’t get that money and fame if you go on some real music. Doing the music she does now she get a lot of album and ticked sales, and that’s what’s important in the end to her management and probably her.

      • ursocalledgod

exactly and that’s sad. REAL ARTIST don’t make music for the radio, money, and fans. if your talented and can touch people that all comes in time. you think Mike, Prince, Marley, Stevie, did it for ticket sales, management, and radio?

      • Jordan

Yes you do. It’s certainly possible with solid marketing. Look at Adele. Her 21 album sold better than any Beyonce album. Adele makes real music.

      • Dope

True every once in a while someone comes along. It worked for Adele thanks to her being a new artist and Rolling in the deep doing good as it did. But for Beyonce, an established artist for about a decade and a half… not really.

She’d have to have some classic songs, and I mean Unbreak my heart, I believe I can fly and that type of timeless classic to even have a shot at it, because her fanbase would have a really hard time adapting.

    • Jordan

Patti and Gladys have a voice, but like Beyonce, they no writers or producers so I don’t find it acceptable to put them next to Sade and Anita Baker. The same with Whitney.

      • ursocalledgod

Have party and Gladys made timeless hits and out their stamp on it? Now has Beyoncé? Exactly.

  • I still have yet to this day found a woman that doesn’t hate on Beyoncé. I like the girl and think her songs are for the most part good, not in a stanish type of way but I still can’t comprehend why so many hate on the girl. I guess if nobody is hating on u, u ain’t doing sht…should be happy a black chick from Texas shutting down arenas, crabs man.

    • JD

I don’t hate on Beyonce. I am a Black woman and I like her. :-) Maybe not all of her songs, but I give credit where credit is due.

      • That’s wsup JD….keep that ish a hunnit…I was gon ask if u was a member of the bee hive but u answered appropriately and kept that sht real.

  • Jordan

I’ve always had respect for songwriters who can write good songs. For this reason, I am not a fan of Beyonce’s music — especially since she takes credit. A lot of her music bubblegum teeny-bopper stuff. I like maybe 15% of her catalog. If you look at all the songs on her albums, you’ll see that she is listed as a writer on all of them. Suspicious. Someone name me one song she has written on her own. You can’t. She’s a good singer and good dancer. She’s an entertainer. That’s it. She’s no singer-songwriter or producer.

    • Taiana Aubrey

Exactly!! She’s an entertainer and a shady one at that. l only like a few songs people wrote for her other than that l’ll pass.

      • LaurenStar

Beyoncé isn’t shady. I’ve seen her working in the studio and helping to create songs. Throwing ideas back and forth with the other songwriters. You don’t know which people got an agenda against Beyoncé for being a successful, black artist. This lie was basically started by Fox’s Roger Friedman over a decade ago, who also hated on MJ and Will Smith, because he was mad that Beyoncé won the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award. She was the second youngest and only black woman to do it. As I said if Linda Perry is so anxious to get into this subject matter, she may want to bring up Elvis. But we know she’ll keep her mouth shut about him.

      • Keith N.

Throwing ideas isnt the same as writing lyrics. The reason she takes songwriting credits is so she gets a higher percentage of the royalties. That’s it. Ne-Yo doesn’t give the writing credit, the label does. So even if Ne-Yo wouldnt give credit to someone who doesnt deserve it, he doesnt give the credit.

There have been dozens of other artists who have done the same thing but if Linda Perry brought up Elvis(when the question was asking about Beyonce) it’d look like she’s hiding from addressing Beyonce claiming..ON VIDEO to have written songs she wrote none of the lyrics for. You can write the background melody all you want but when you go on stage and tell your fans you wrote this for heartbroken women…a background melody is not where the message for heartbroken women resides…it’s…wait for it..IN THE LYRICS.

      • Taiana Aubrey

Beyonce is a good entertainer. l have no problem admitting that. However, lets not pretend that Beyonce at some point in her career was shady. She learned from the shadiest of them all Mathew Shady Knowles. And l’m sorry l don’t respect people that strong arm and hijack other peoples art and then claim they did all the work. Yes l’m looking at you Elvis and you too Beyonce.

      • Jordan

Right! She only puts her name on songs so she can reap the royalties. Songwriting credit pays well, while singing a song doesn’t. But when a person like Beyonce lists herself as a co-producer, songwriter, and singer for a song…that’s bank.

      • Jordan

I would be mad if Beyonce won songwriter of the year too. Her music lacks a lot of substance lyrically. And she doesn’t really write. People that work with her even said so. Ne-Yo said she added the melody to “Irreplaceable” and she got songwriting credit for that. -_-. And I wish people would stop using the whole black artist thing. Given the success of Prince, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey (who has 18 #1 hits, 2nd to The Beatles), Kanye West, 2Pac, and other black artists…talent beats race any day.

    • LaurenStar

Beyoncé isn’t listed as writer on every song, but she is on the majority of them. Bootylicious and Dangerously in Love are some songs she has written by herself. A lot of the credits you see could be from using a sample, and that person’s name goes in the credits as well. I’ve seen Beyoncé in footage working with other songwriters and she giving input into how the song is structured. She is a songwriter. Again, songwriting includes lyrics and/or melodies. So, I guess you don’t think anybody that has more than their name on a song is doing the same thing? Because a lot of artists have more than one’s person name, plus their name on a song.

      • Jordan

Please, name me 5 songs from her solo albums where she is not listed as a songwriter. I’ll wait. And she didn’t write Dangerously in Love or Bootylicious by herself. I know for a fact Bootylicious was co-written by Stevie Nicks. Do some research. Check the credits on her albums via Wikipedia or something. And samples are credited, but they are not given songwriting credit. Of course a lot of artists have songwriters, but Beyonce always has songwriters. I believe the only thing she has written on her own was her interludes. Michael Jackson and Prince has songwriters, but they wrote most of their songs…hit songs. You couldn’t be more wrong about Beyonce.

    • rocky687

after you said teeny bopper stuff u lost me…this is how i know you don’t listen to beyonce at all because it seems you only listen to her radio stuff.
beyonces name is not any of DC’s first album and in some of her solo albums. if you look at some of her songs on her 3rd album shes listed last which means she didnt write as much for that songs. beyonce has written and co written alot for example the song she wrote for latavia, heaven, blue, dangerously in love she wrote….songs like single ladies, halo ,i miss you she co wrote….songs like i was here and if i were a boy she didnt write and she has stated this and it been proven

      • Jordan

Isn’t all of her stuff radio stuff? I’m 19 now, I used to be a big fan of hers until I turned 17. ‘4’ and ‘Beyoncé’ are her only mature albums. She has other mature stuff, but most of the catalog is weak. All those songs you listed, she is listed as a “co-writer.” The only reason her name isn’t in the writing credits for “If I Were A Boy” is because it was originally recorded by the writers of the song. She sung the song without the writers/original artists’ permission, they were upset, and they later reached an agreement.

      • rocky687

See that’s what I mean you only promotional songs like single ladies, drunk in love and her hit singles and dangerously in love was a mature album for her age at that time b day is debatable and the last two are very mature …especially in this era of music people hear a single or a radio hit and think they know an artists catalog if u think it’s radio stuff u obviously never listened to DIL, Sasha,4 or beyoncé…beyoncé co written a lot but she also has songs she’s written her self if u look at the album you’ll see when it comes to co writing her name is always last…when she writes songs her self her name is first….she didn’t write I was here and her name is not on the writing credits neither was closer I get to you

      • Jordan

Why do you mean? You couldn’t be more more wrong. I’ve listened to entire albums by her. Her B Day and Sasha Fierce albums are obviously her worsts. Total bubblegum music. Other than those two albums, her other 3 are barely decent. None of them have classic material. And no, her name is NOT always last for co-writing credit. Of course she wasn’t given writing credits for ‘The Closer I Get to You,” Luther sung that song without her before. And ‘I Was Here’ was too public at the time because the writer already came out and said she wrote it, so of course Beyonce didn’t giver herself writing credit.

  • Can song writers perform?

Write that ‘chet & get your cut. MoFo’s getting all kid capri & ‘chet & want to be the star of the show.

    KNOW YA’ C*tDayum ROLE!

The hatin is still a good look for Bey! If she didn’t do it up right…they wouldn’t be hating!

    • Immortal

Nah bruh. NeYo was doing his thing as a performer, Dream was doing his and both wrote major hits for other artists. So in your thinking they should be “happy” and shut up because some “big name” artist gave them a chance? So if you go to work tomorrow, your boss should take a large cut of your check because he gave you a chance to work? Hells to the naw that sh*t won’t fly and you won’t allow it. Why should they?
MJ always thought bad press is good press so I guess Beywoulf thinks the same.

      • The boss makes 3x what he’s paying you.
IE: hanging drywall, the company bills client $45 an hr & pays you $15 & expect you to be grateful.

If NeYo & dream could have made it jump…why didn’t they?
Not saying they aren’t major artists, but they were compensated.

      • Immortal

But is the company (Beywoulf) paying you that $45 then giving you $15 (Edogz) and making it seem like they’re doing you a solid, then taking another $5 (Graft for dealing with Beywoulf) of the top and telling you don’t worry be happy?
The company’s going to take credit for the drywall work unless it was a crappy job, but in copyrights for songs the credit should go where it’s due. Her ego is as inflated as her old ass used to be.
Dream was always the ninja behind the scenes so that was his spot. NeYo was hustling at the time with his own albums so to write and sell was a bonus to anyone.

      • LaurenStar

Oh, so you think Beyoncé wants people lying on her? Liar Perry can shut it up. Neyo said Beyoncé wrote the melody for Irreplaceable, and he wouldn’t give anyone credit if they didn’t deserve it. Again, does Liar Perry want to bring Elvis or Led Zeppelin into the conversation since she acting like she’s playing Ms. Honesty? Probably mad that Beyoncé has never asked for one of her songs or she’s working for a competitor of Beyoncé’s.

  • Clondyke Classic

This matters why? Beyoncé is Beyoncé don’t nobody care if she wrote the song or not. In fact they don’t care who wrote it. The only thing is that Beyoncé is the one singing it. You can write the exact same song for Ciara or Keyshia Cole and nobody would give a fucc. That’s just real.

  • Simba711

Tell me something I didn’t know. Beyoncé is about as real as her hair.

    • LaurenStar

Well, before Beyonce cut her hair, it was long. Check her real hair getting braided on behind the scenes of Video Phone. Just not as long as when she wears fake hair. I guess Adele about as real as her hair since she wears fake hair, too. The majority of the females in the industry does. At least, they’re not getting fake boobs, lips and butts. Linda Perry may want to bring up Elvis when she talks about artist getting credit for songs they didn’t write. Is he real? Or how Pharrell and Chad already composed the songs for Justified because they were going to give them to Michael Jackson. Michael turned down the offer to do the songs. Yet Justin still got writing credit on all the songs. Will she say anything about white artists, though?

      • Jordan

You’re obsessed with Beyonce. You cannot even admit to one flaw. No one is knocking Beyonce for not being a songwriter, they are knocking her because she steals credit. Yes, Justin Timberlake got writing credit for basically all of his solo music, much of it written with Timbaland, but when has Justin stole credit? He uses co-writers to deliver hits, but he’s certainly capable of writing on his own. He initially wrote “Gone” for Michael Jackson. And Linda Perry wasn’t asked about white artists. She was asked about Beyonce. The music industry knows Beyonce doesn’t write and has falsely taken credit. The same can’t be said about Justin Timberlake because he has never stolen credit that we know of.

  • $18916246

Only wrote?…..Ok and Beyonce “ONLY” bought the rest, And the other contributors “ONLY” sold the song to….wait for it……BEYONCE! It’s also true that song writers can add to their credentials that they have written hits for Bey. It’s a win, win, for all parties involved. I’m proud of Bey considering the history of the music industry which traditionally reserves the recording artist credit to being a performer “only” which later leads to the famed artist becoming broke. Then theirs the back room disagreements and lawsuits over credits and royalties that have gotten a host of famed recording artist “killed”. I’ll make my point digestible by saying the artist is “FOUND DEAD” or has apparently succumbed to their own vices and surroundings and the naive public goes for the okidoke every time without question. I give credit to all recording artist present and past who have worked equally as hard to master the business of recording and preventing themselves from being ripped off and murdered…literally.

I’ve seen footage of Beyoncé in the studio writing lyrics, creating melodies and bouncing ideas off other songwriters/producers her suggestion was the one used. What Linda Perry says reeks of jealousy. Again, if she wants to open her mouth so much about this practice bring Elvis and the other white singers that have/are doing it. I bet she’ll keep her mouth shut on that.

      • Jordan

Yes, you seen footage intended to make her look good. Linda Perry isn’t jealous, she gave an honest answer. The interviewer asked her how does she feel about Beyonce changing one word on a song and getting writing credit. The question was specifically about Beyonce and no other artists. Comprehend. Please.

  • Pingback: Linda Perry Says Beyonce Takes Credit For Songs She Didn’t Write Because She’s Beyonce | HoodHustle Ent()

  • LaurenStar

Linda Perry sounds like a hater. She was actually asked about how do you feel about Beyoncé changing one word on a song and getting credit. I frankly could care if it’s 1 word or 10. For example, she changed Smack Into You into Smash Into You. It sounds better, and I don’t care about her getting credit for that. She also changed the bridge of the song, too. I love how some of you just take the word of people that might’ve an agenda against Beyonce, like it’s the gospel. Why doesn’t Linda Perry talk about Elvis if she wants to get into this subject matter, taking credits for songs he didn’t write? Because it’s never about tearing down a white legend. Beyoncé has written and co-written on a lot of her songs, songwriting does include writing lyrics and/or melodies. A long time ago, Beyoncé said she learned the hard way that anytime you give another songwriter or producer an idea, you’re suppose to receive credit for it. She said that she was doing it during her early Destiny’s Child days. The idea would get used, and she wouldn’t get a songwriter/producer credit. I remember a few months before B’Day came out Beyoncé said she worked with Neyo and several other people on B’Day. Talked about how they had a songwriting camp. It was footage of them writing and thinking up the songs together. Neyo said that Beyoncé did write the melody for the song, and he would never give anybody credit if they didn’t do it for real. There was an interview before Beyonce went solo where she said that she liked writing songs, and her favorite part was creating melodies. Prince has even talked about how musical Beyoncé is. Linda needs to have several seats.

    • Jordan

Last time. Again, Elvis has never taken credit. He has openly stated he never wrote a song. Elvis has less than 10 writing credits and they are all co-writes. Believe whatever you want. Worship celebrities if you want. Be brainwashed if you want. Beyonce is an amazing performer, great singer, and great dancer. That’s wonderful, but don’t take credit for people’s work just to earn more money. There’s nothing wrong with not songwriting. Not songwriting and stealing credit for songwriting is what’s wrong.
