Bill Cosby Vs Michael Eric Dyson: A Scholarly Rap Battle?

Wednesday, February 27, 2008 9:25 AM | 40 comments
By Houston Williams

Could Hip-Hop see an epic rap battle between two titans of culture, knowledge and entertainment?

Michael Eric Dyson strongly suggested during a recent outing that he would be recording an album that would respond to Bill Cosby’s upcoming rap album, State of Emergency.

“There’s nothing worse than a comedian that’s trying to be serious on a certain level. That could be hazardous to your career. And to your health,” Dyson, 49, told AllHipHop.com.

The relationship with the 70-year-old Bill Cosby and Hip-Hop is one that extends years back, but most recently he has criticized the more negative aspects of the genre, in particular gangsta rap.

Prior to that he was unapologetic in a speech about the poor and those that adopt certain negative behavior as the norm.

Whether or not they spar lyrically remains to be seen, but they have wrangled via the written word.

In Bill Cosby’s 2007 book Come On, People, he chastises gangsta rappers saying that that artists and corporations promote the N-Word, degrade women and attempt to normalize deviant behavior.

In 2006, Dyson responded to Cosby’s notions in the award-winning book Is Bill Cosby Right?: Or Has the Black Middle Class Lost Its Mind?, where he looked at what he considered an “assault on the Black poor.”

Cosby is an accomplished musician whose harmonious achievements didn’t go unnoticed to Dyson.

“Bill Cosby’s made some great albums. Some of the stuff he’s done in jazz pioneering has been incredible,” admitted Dyson, who also confessed to being interested in what his peer had in store.

“I actually am interested in hearing what he’s got to say, if he is rapping himself or does he have guest rappers or if he’s going to do his thing…because he’s a funny dude,” Dyson said.

Sources told AllHipHop.com that Cosby would deal with drug abuse, high school dropouts, and teenage pregnancy on State of Emergency, his first rap foray.

Of the album title Dyson said, “That doesn’t sound too comedic.”

Both men have a storied history of service in the community, but neither album has a specific release date at press time.

I love Bill Cosby but he is quick to shit on rap...Michael Eric Dyson is takes more of a scholar approach to hip hop..puts himself in the shoes of the ppl making the music and just seems to be alot more well versed on the subject at hand instead of just being cynical about the hip hop culture like Bill seems to be...thats my two cents

Dyson is a fraud...he's just tryin to look cool & appeal to the hip-hop crowd by quoting 2pac lines here and there.

Bill Cosby is just telling people the hard truth, but as Jack Nicholson said "You can't handle the truth."

@hiphopgod912: Who says that? Cosby has OG status in the game, fam...

@ Everyone: I don't think it's an actual rap beef. However, some people are covering it as such, but I have to read a lil more up on it. Dyson is borderline jive if you ask me. Cosby is correct in what he says most of the time. However, people just aren't used to him saying the type of political things that he says because they are used to seeing him as a funny man. I work @ an inner city non-profit, and a lot of the things he says are true and we do need to do better as a people in general. It shouldn't be looked @ as classism; it should be viewed as a muthapucker tellin' it how it is and how it's gone be and how we need to know better to do better. You can deny it if you want to, but live in reality and realize a lot of the things we do in general are ass backwards.

Also, whoever wrote this, how did it turn into a rap battle when neither of them rap? Why couldn't it simply be a scholarly discussion between intellectuals. Promoting beef is getting outta hand and sooner or later people need to take responsibility for their actions and the culture of animosity between people that they create.

Gone!

This is kinda of a weird subject... When I look at what is trying to be done...

I don't think any of these albums will be accepted in the Current HipHop generation who is used to Catchy on hit wonders.

Now if Vets in the game come out and are struggling with sales and support for there material how is Bill Cosby and Eric Dyson gonna buy people interest with there material...

Sales will equal the amount of people there messages will be delivered to so how are they gonna get there message to be accepted among the masses who Bill Cosby has insulted Gangsta rappers and the Poor who support them..

So how can Bill reach the class of people he is tyring to speak to?

I agree with everything Bill Cosby is saying as well as Prof. Dyson.I see them as two sides of the same coin.

Its funny to me that so many folk scream how real they are and how they dont give a fucC but these same folk get their panties in a knot when they get called out.If it doesnt apply to you then brush it off.

Deep down folk know Bill is on point but their so used to everyone justifying the bullshit that they cant take criticism.

I'm so glad that this article came up, because there is a lot to be said on this.  I am all for Bill Cosby,  everything he has said is absolutely correct of the mind-frame in the Black Community.  What kills me about this is that the Hip Hop community, certain activist and prominent people that criticize Cosby for his remarks,  are actually agreeing with him without knowing.  Here is a good example when hip hop is under attack, the black community comes into question, do you notice that when ppl like Micheal Eric Dyson would go in defense by mentioning the same things Bill Cosby has addressed for years.  Y'all want proof, look up through youtube for things like hip hop vs america, hip hop artist on hip hop, david banner, jena six. And compare their answers to Cosby, and you will notice that their all the same without them knowing.

As far as Micheal Eric Dyson's looking-for-a-fight hyper-active mid-life crisis ass, the quotes he speaks on this article are just assumptions, because no one knows the content of Cosby's album yet. This reminds me of anyone criticizing Nas' new album, but nobody heard the album yet period. So fall back on that.  And just cause Cosby is a funny man, just remember, each comedian always have an in-depth message to speak on and for us to think about, that's one of the points to great comedy, to think and laugh. Peace.

bill cosby is doing what most of our elders are doing....pointing a finger at the youngin's and shakin' it! i think he's right in most of his message, he just needs to go about talkin' to the youngstas and the young parents in a different way...his harshness offends because it makes us see a ugly truth....that rather its overstated or understated exist in "our" music...shit, they made kanye edit his song for say that when a brotha get paper he leaves a sista for a "w***e girl"! you can only blatantly call black women bitches and hoes in music, and you can only blatantly talk about killin' and sellin' dope to brothas in the hood.....name me 10 current songs (last 12 months) from genres other than hip hop that do that shit....i love all rap, but bill got a point.

I Agree with what you are saying indeed.  But as far as Cosby being harsh, it is definitely necessary to be that because the way society is treating important matters is very much sugar coated.  Cosby's approach reminds me of a  grandmother or a grandfather, having that tough love which has a good point and a good intent that leads to a great solution.  Overall, Cosby's approach is needed because who else is doing that? Peace.

How could anyone have a problem with Bill Cosby saying the obvious.  There are issues in the community.  I dont even feel like its an old or young thing its just black peole in general.  Young people learn from the example set before them.  Murder, Drugs, poverty didnt jus start in our generation, they jus preach to the young because they have a more direct part in the outcome of the future....and this probablly wouldnt interest you there's no dance to go along

I think that this is a great thing. Both men are using the most viable, visible means of communication, music, to reach our youth.  Both care about and want to improve our community more than most people will ever know.  They just have differing opinions on how to get us there. This is how everything should be handled – positively!!!

I gotta commend any nigga out here at least TRYING or ATTEMPTING to get black america 'right', alot of cats is quick to talk about fuck this & that with a 30 second know it all answer about what THEY think is wrong with black america but dont got the nuts to REALLY speak up about nothing & dont stand for shit no way...those are the same niggas who will ASSUME their way through improtant times like this election process but act like they know it all...wont get involved, but feels their voice should still matter...

We aint got no kinda heros or idols no more thats why we are quick to co-sign a wack nigga with a little bit of ANYTHING that you yourself dont have...black america has become shallow just like white america if you ask me...

Bill came off like a cold shower in the morning, which doesnt always work for everybody...some niggas just need to learn things the hard way, those are the "I dont care/fuck it" niggas...
The ones who feel they dont gotta care about shit but themselves and money...They are offended, they dont wanna hear it, they say fuck bill cosby etc. etc. as long as nobody spoils the fun... the nigga had a valid point thats addressed year after year after year...whats so different when he said it?
I wont even comment on Mike Dyson...he always comes off like he's just here to show he's on "our side" with the 2pac raps/quotes and "illabyle syllable qillable" witty responses, sounding like dolomite or a pimp named sweetback...

shiiit, hip hop aint even united..the entire industry is split up & cliqued up thats why its damn near impossible to get in the game now...money got niggas brains tunred all the way off right now, most feel like "what can I do to change the game without getting called a hater"...Thats like niggas pet peeve now, not to get called a hater,lol...so shallow....
I look at it like, our elders are probably dumbfounded off what they see, we got no true idea (besides a few good flicks & stories) what it was REALLY like back in those days growing up...not the hollywood flicks, that 100% REAL racism shit, the 50 white dudes and a cop against your 1 black ass and its legal type shit...THEY came up from that shit, not us physically its who we are yes, but I can only assume...imagine how they feel NOW coming from all that, we just dont give a fuck in 2008, thats easy to do...not care...were talkin about cats who seen & experienced REAL shit that movies are made of, how do they feel? You couldnt afford to not care, you wouldnt have survived noway possible, there were no shortcuts to success, you still had to EARN it back then... It must look bitter sweet cause THEY fought, and I mean REALLY FOUGHT & died to get HERE, RIGHT HERE & NOW...we take the baton and look how we disrespect this shit, I really cant say I blame bill cosby or anybody who gets fed up after a while....then again, how are we to blame for all the wrong? but thats another argument in itself...
Bill Cosby is a nigga who was always at the forefront for black america, how in this universe could ANYBODY brand new to the scene who aint stood up or did shit talk about fuck him?
And just cause IM ALLOWED NOW to not give a fuck?
Thats so shallow but thats what we've come to and become, a generation of niggas eager to not give a fuck and not know about shit but gettin money & pussy...
Bill and everybody else had their time to connect with the hip hop generation when its was "in" to be hip to Malcom X & afrocentricity was HUGE etc.(a time when hip hop was still OURS) insetad they talked at us instead of to us, and they had the same stance that they do today...ridicule instead of overstanding...
that shit NEVER works...
This is an argument that will never end cause you got those willing to stand by while everything goes haywire and those willing to jump in front of the bullet for black america...but those kinda folks just happen to be cut from a different cloth, from a different time, and are most likely over 50 and WE dont respect them or want to hear them... or want to...or feel we have to...bill knows this, thats why backtracked and he's making a rap album now...he's force feeding the stupid cause he knows its very neccessary...popular rappers wont do it, they are afraid and cant do it, so a comedian is taking the intiative.
You gotta rememeber, just like niggas is eager to not give a fuck and dismiss everything you got true leaders who are dedicated to change and dont give a fuck about what you dont wanna hear or care about....

i agree with you on that 100%, in my piece i wasn't saying that i disagreed with the cos' tone, i was implying that those that get offended by the cos' tone are offended because it causes us to look inward at ourselves (using "us" in reference to all african-american hip hoppers).

i appreciate the solid homey!
