Nas Issues Statement Regarding 'N****r' Name Change

Monday, May 19, 2008 6:07 PM | 149 comments
By Houston Williams and Nolan Strong

Queensbridge, New York rapper Nas has confirmed that he has changed the title of his forthcoming controversial album from N***er.

Contrary to reports that the album will be titled Nas, the rapper told AllHipHop.com that the album will simply be untitled.

"It's important to me that this album gets to the fans," Nas told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “It's been a long time coming. I want my fans to know that creatively and lyrically, they can expect the same content and the same messages. It's that important. The streets have been waiting for this for a long time. The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it."

Nas’ will release another single from the upcoming untitled release, which will be his 9th studio album.

In January, a representative for Island Def Jam denied allegations that they were planning to drop Nas unless he changed the album’s title, after reports surfaced that retailers were hesitant to stock their shelves with the album.

The rapper also had the support of a number of his peers, including Island Def Jam CEO Antonio “L.A.“ Reid, LL Cool, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, although his former nemesis told MTV News that he felt that Nas' album title was “misguided.”

“I know he's very intelligent and there a reason behind what he's doing…he's not just doing it for the sake of being provocative….of course we're going to support his art…I believe it's coming from a great place. I just think it's misguided.”

In February, Nas and his wife Kelis caused a mild controversy, when they donned clothing emblazoned with the word “n***er” on their front and backs to the Grammy Awards.

Nas’ untitled album is due in stores July 1 on Island Def Jam.

bet the next mode of african influenced musical expression will be guarded a little bit closer by black folks.

The last thing we need is for John McCain to ask Obama what he think about an artist from a major record label naming his album "NIGGER" and tryin to fuck up his political game. Now we all know what time it is, Obama definatly knows what time it is, but your average middle aged, middle class white Amerikkkan don't. It's too important of a year for that shit. Just cause Nas wanna name his shit that. At least wait until the nigga is in office...LOL!

The power is still with hip-hop on this one.  The fact that everyone thinks the labels control our art is proof that "they" won along time ago.  The power will always be with the artist.  I think Jay was right when he said the album title was misguided.  I also think a more powerful statement would have been made had he kept the title N***** and then not even use the word on the album at all.  The problem is not the label its the artist.  They copy what they see on TV and that dictates to the label what should be "hot."  The desperation by rappers causes them to compromise and sacrifice their talent and art for an advance and their song on the radio.

Yea, it wasnt bad. I just think he didn't put as much effort into the album as he could have. Maybe it was just the beats, as many will probably agree; Nas hasn't always had the best producers throughout his career.  But then again it's not always about the beat either.  Kinda tough to break this down.

"The Lost Tapes" and "Illmatic", I'm good.  The rest of his catalog sucked rotten eggs.

It is this type of fool I can't understand! This if the same punk who is out snap dancing with Soulja Boy, Flo Rida, Bow Wow and the rest of the sucker Mc's. A rapper would eat his own shit to have a respected catolog like Nas.

Illmatic
It Was Written
Nastrodomus
God's Son
Stillmatic
Firm
QB's Finest
The Lost Tapes
Street's Disciple
Hip Hip is Dead

Besides Jay-z, Tupac & B.I.G. who has a catalog like this that for the lyrical Mc. For all you microwave hott ringtone rappers do the research and understand if you don't have sound lyrical world play you will be out faster than you think.

This shows that Black people really don't have the political nor economic power. If an artist has a legitimate artistic expression, then whether we like it or not, we should support and respect it. This is boardline cencorship at its finest, and most of you ass-kissing-sitting-while-you-pee negroes don't even see the ramifications of it.

What if he called the CD "The Louis Farrakhan CD" and the stores would not carry it since it may have "anti-semitic" lyrics or the title would denote "Anti-semitism". Why are these stores even in the position to tell us, Black people, what to call our Hip Hop CD titles.

By some of these comments, we as a people has a long way to go. I think some of ya'll massa is calling you

this ain't true censorship.  if nas was a true revolutionary, and if he REALLY cared that much about the album title and the message it contained, he'd find a way to release it independently.

i agree with the nigs who feel that this was all just a pr campaign to get in the headlines for album sales.  and it worked too.  we ate it up.  as others said, it ain't like richard pryor, tupac and nwa didn't all release albums with the word nigga in it before.  look at it that way.  so is nas really ahead of the grain on some artistic shit?

We need to get that word out there and let muithafuckas kno that it dont hurt us and it dont phase us. Think about it, the majority of Niggers in the world are white. We gotta let "them" kno that...

It has nothing to do with being cheap, it has to do with having a brain..... I might as well throw my money in the garbage if im gonna buy something i can get for free.<p>
You are obviously just too stupid to figure out how to download albums so you throw your money away like all the 13 year old girls buying Britney Spears albums. I have no remorse for artists and there albums not selling.... why do you think every artist worth listening to these days have there own clothes, shoes, liquor, NBA team... its because there smart and they know that in 5 years artists will not even make money off album sales.

I can't wait for his album to come out.  I'm sick and tired of all this terrible music that is being played.  It's almost like blackface from bamboozled.  They are selling lies and deceiving the masses by filling their mind with empty messages.  Lyrics like "till the sweat drips down my balls"???? Are you kidding me?  People need to wake up and revolt.

Co-Sign

And I'm especially have my hatred for 5-0 and his crew, their music is destroying this genre just as much as the south, Nas needs to kill this off as soon as he hits number#1.
along with game.

Your great great great ancestors being slaves is no excuse for you to be a worthless piece of shit, so stop using it as one and try to do something other then shoot one of your own kind.
