TOP 5 DEAD OR ALIVE: Bun B

On March 31, 2009, UGK’s final album, 4 Life, will be released. Still waving the mighty UGK flag, despite the untimely passing of Pimp C on December 4, 2007, is Bun B.

Anyone weary of Bun's ability to maintain the precedent set with UGK’s triumphant Underground Kingz (2007) album—never mind the Port Arthur, TX duos legacy—need not fret. “The music from this album was part of a field of music that we recorded through the process of the UGK double album and beyond,” says Bun. “We basically were on a roll musically, and we didn’t feel like we should stop so we kept making music, and it got to the point where—if we don’t have a place for it now, we’ll just keep it and we’ll figure out where to put it later.”

Down the line there will be a few UGK affiliated projects. Bun will drop his Trill OG solo album in June, via Rap-A-Lot/Asylum, and the late Pimp C, whose widow has control of his catalog, has a posthumous project in the works too. While the group completed their contractual commitment to Jive/Sony, the label surely has unreleased UGK material in the vaults.

Needless to say completing the UGK album at hand wasn't an easy task. “It was definitely a labor of love,” says Bun of the album whose guest list includes 8Ball & MJG, E-40, Big Gipp and Too $hort and production from Mannie Fresh and Cory Mo. “These are all people that anybody would instantly recognize as friends and family with UGK, he continues. They’re good friends of mine, and good friends of Pimp’s, and it just made sense. I didn’t want it to seem like I was taking advantage of the situation and go for the biggest names I could get just for the sake of doing that. I felt this album deserved better, and the people deserved better.”

To keep the mood light we asked Bun B for his Top 5 MCs Dead or Alive. The resulting list certifies what you already knew, Bun B knows his Hip-Hop, and it's Pimp C and UGK for life.

    http://admin.allhiphop.com/photos/blog_pictures/images/18964635/secondarythumb.aspxPimp C

“Number one I say Pimp C. And it’s not even because he was in a group with me. People have to realize that he named himself Pimp C at 16, in high school. When it was not a cool thing for a teenager to call himself a pimp. This cat was always years before his time. He was always against the grain and always sticking further [out] than everybody else.

“In retrospect, people look at a lot of s**t he was saying and understand it, but then it was taken as simple rhetoric or just an attitude or whatever you want to call it.  But now when people see it, they see it’s really more about passion and sincerity than anything else and just being brutally honest.

    http://admin.allhiphop.com/photos/blog_pictures/images/20805957/secondarythumb.aspxKool G. Rap

“For me personally, Kool G. Rap was who I felt I could be because I looked at Big Daddy Kane and I was like I ain’t gon’ never be Kane. It wasn’t about the lyricism but it was about the personality. I was like I’m never gon’ be into myself like that so to me it was G. Rap.  Just the delivery and the nonchalance of it, the matter-of-factness of it. I look now and see that the majority of people we tend to call good lyricists or people that have a great flow, a lot of it comes from a lot of early work G. Rap was doing.

    http://admin.allhiphop.com/photos/blog_pictures/images/21108951/secondarythumb.aspxRick Royal

“Rick Royal, from the Royal Flush on Rap-a-Lot Records, to me was one of the greatest songwriters, not just rapper, but really an incredible songwriter for himself and other people as well. Rick Royal wrote “Deeper” for Boss, and “Progress of Elimination.”  But he wrote a song called “I Never Made 20” for Royal Flush, if you can find that song and tell me that that’s not one of the best written rap songs in your life [Ed. Note: We tried in vain to find an MP3 of "I Never Made 20." Do share if you happen to have a copy.]. I would say I’d give you something, but people would just say no just to get something.

“But seriously, I’d really like to hear that song and see what year it was recorded and then tell me it ain’t one of the best songs ever.  It was Pimp’s favorite rap song. Period. Hands down, nothing remotely close.  When we actually heard the song I was 20, he was 19 and it really hit him, it really hit him hard. When you hear it you be like, “Wow,” this is a crazy record, and you couldn’t see that being anybody’s life.  But it’s really a reflection of the paranoia that young Black men feel.”

    http://admin.allhiphop.com/photos/blog_pictures/images/20699802/secondarythumb.aspxScarface

“Scarface, I think for the fact that watching him excel as a lyricist basically outlined my direction and the path that I had to take with some deviation, but I wanted to consider myself a lyricist, I wanted respect from lyrics and ‘Face was the person closest to me that had accomplished that, so I just tried to follow and walk that walk that he walked. Face’s first record was ’86 or ’87, around four years before me.

    http://admin.allhiphop.com/photos/blog_pictures/images/20379871/secondarythumb.aspxYoung Jeezy

“And the last one I wanna make sure I hit the nail on the head.  People always say Tupac or Biggie and I think that’s safe.  You know, it’s real easy to say that.  But I have to be honest, maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but I think when people look back in retrospect, I think Jeezy is going to be one of the great communicators of the Hip-Hop game.

“I honestly believe that.  I believe that Young Jeezy opened up a more direct line of dialogue with the consumer and rap music that had ever been accomplished.  You know, it’s very core.  A lot of people assume that it’s just very core drug s**t, but then when you look at The Recession album, just the simple fact that he had named it The Recession early before the recession came, that really comes from being connected to the environment to the point where you see the effects of what’s going on firsthand. And when you speak in terms of recession, which is basically everybody losing money or losing value, the main people that are going to be affected first are the people with the least amount of money or value.  And that’s our inner city, urban people. I don’t mean urban as just people of color because unfortunately, all poor people aren’t just people of color.  It’s some white people doing bad. And it just goes to show you that color doesn’t get you ahead in this world.

My President Feat. Nas - Young Jeezy

“But not to get off track, when it’s all said and done, we all have moments when the music is questionable. I don’t think anybody’s going to leave this rap game with a clean slate.  You look at KRS One’s first album, Criminal Minded with him holding a pistol, “My Uzi Weighs a Ton” with Public Enemy. We all have our moments with questionable behavior.  With that being said, when it’s all looked backed on in retrospect, I think they’re going to really have to give that kid a lot more credit than they give him now cause I don’t know anybody that listens to it and doesn’t love it.

“I find it very telling that Jeezy is the only originator that ended up making more money than his predecessors. Usually when somebody broke a style, other people got paid off that style way more than they did, but with his s**t, it was really unique to us believing him.  Because normally when that happens, it’s based off a gimmick, and then somebody ends up doing your gimmick better than you.  But because his s**t is based off reality, the only way you could outdo it is if you had a truer view and you have to damn near be the junkie or be the actual cocaine to tell it to give more inside information. You have to be the bounced check in the evicted apartment, not the people getting evicted, you know?”

    THE SIDEBAR

Bun B actually could have rolled on with UGK without Pimp C… Yeah, right.

“This may sound crazy to some people but you got to remember my record deal comes from the early nineties; there was a death clause in the UGK contract. Basically it said that if one of the members should die, the other member has the right if they want to, to either bring in someone to replace, or continue in some other form or fashion as a group. I chose neither. It was easier to make that decision because this album officially ends the UGK deal.”

Scarface & G-Rap definitely need to be gettin royalties from damn near erybody in the game if u aint ben influenced by them directly the rapper u dickridin now most definitely has. Pimp C did his thang niggas always gotta remember he aint neva bite his tongue for noone and for that I give him respect plus the way he came off on Get Thowed was official. Holla at ya nigga

He gave valid reasons for his picks.

I think Bun is one of the best ever from the South. What I love most about his flow is that he's confident enough to be articulate and well spoken in his verses, as opposed to Southern cats like Plies who think you have to talk like an illiterate fucking monkey to have street cred. There really are a lot of wise, well read, brothers in the South who STILL kick it in the street, and earn respect.
That said, everybody's Top 5 is different, but Bun really threw me with Jeezy.

Bun is the trillest of all time, anyone questioning his list is officially a BITCH!!! 1st of all there's no need to put Pac or Big on a list their position is solidified and untakable. Everyone knows Jigga's status so its unnecessary to repeat it over and over. Everybody hopefully has more than 2 or 3 rappers that influence them or that they see as dope. There is no best rapper, there are those who have made significant contributions to the game, some not so significant, and some no contribution whatsoever, and the levels of talent vary. Bun himself said nobody's gonna leave here with a clean slate. I defy anyone to name an M.C. that never made a weak or questionable song. there are also several wack rappers that have atleast one fresh verse in their repitiore. With all that said, Jeezy is dope as hell, not a top nothin of all time, but Jeezy has a style, an original rhyme scheme, and actually has something to say in between the cocaine boasts. He deftly articulates the struggle juxtaposed with the success of leachin off of gheddo residents while at the same time being the hood hero. And unlike most REAL dboys turned M.C. he is clever with his wordplay, I feel Bun mentioned him becuz unlike T.I. and others Jeezy never gets props for his lyrics. Learn to give respect where its due!!!

I see why ppl are skeptical on Jeezy? My ppls be like Jeezy is dope and Im like whatever. Big up Ciph and Mdawg. But here are a few songs that are making me pay more attention:
    1) I forgot the name but MTV plays every now and then. Its one of those real life songs with Keisha Cole Singing the hook. Dark beat. He talks about His partner on 1 verse on some 2pac Iaint Mad atchya way, Then on the 2nverse He talks about his mom finding cocaine in his room and him regretting that he almost bugged out on her..in a Jay-z U most love me type of of way off Vol. 1..I think its from his first album.
2)Crazy World..When I heard this in the whip ..OMG..Im like he has to put a video out for this..This shit is like a shot of Adrenaline and the video was just fuking ill.
3)IF He dont love you Ciara ft Jeezy: Im like how is this gruffy sounding nigga gonna sound on this ish..Well it worked and he killed it..I single this out because you hear the progression in his lyrics..He knows we talk about the adlibs, Great Unique voice, and he make an effort to make his lyrics better.

Style and Delvery: Say what you want. Its original and dope.
And Just like Bun said. He making  money off that shit. U got Shawty lo and Rocko who kind of borrowed his style but he the only one winnig with that shit.

Believability, and respectability: A real recognize real and Dude is Authentic. If he says something Generaly I believe it or I believe-- He believes it! His music is based on real stuff. And he made peace with Nas..He wasnt a dick head about it. He handled his discrepancy like a Man.

Scarface Need to be on more ppl list. I dont understand why Yall southern Cats aint making this nigga Platinum everytime.
Face is dope.. And I only had 3 Albums of his. The album where he had that story Joint wit Jay, My Block and ish, Made, and Emeritus. But I plan on Having everything his whole catalogue.Official shit. And Only do that with certain artist.

As Un Up and coming MC its only right you support the Architechs because whether You know it or not they Influenced your style.

For Example. Blueprint Jay Z song.. The Ruler. Ppl dont Know a lot of thats based on a Slick Rick Song. Get on down to that old Slick rythem, Thats if yeah still living.. Hold on cause the driver of the mission is a pro..let the trumpets blow.. Well at least to me/ A whole lot of ppl tryna sound like Ricky D" .The whole ruler Bit.. all of that is from Slick Rick's First album! And You thought that was all Jay smh.

Man this is a pretty good list not as good as Killer Mike's but not bad.

I am not sure I would have Jeezy in my list but I respect the pick and we can't deny Jezzy's impact on rap and Bun made a good point about him.

I will not discredit a rap OG cause he may know more and can see more about the game then me. Can't deny G-Rap or Face and Pimp C is an obvious choice ofr him and I can't deny that UGK is in the top 5 rap duo's of all time hands down. any order (Run-DMC, Ball & MJG, Outkasts, UGK)

Everybody be upset over people's list but most lists are personal to that person and the effect the music has had on them...

As far as the list, I respect it!

Bun is one my favorites:  but JEEZY!

I respectfully and wholeheartedly disagree!   We've been in or headed into a recession for at least 2.5 yrs.

No Disrespect but that's an off the wall comment that you would expect from Pimp-C  Hold up!!!

Half you single minded mothafuckaz don't know shit about Rick Royal and/or Scarface (as much as some try to act like they do). This is a straight up original list...not like everyone putting mainstream "entertainers" ( I won't even call them rappers) simply because they hear their songs in the club when they out tricking for broadz.

My thing with Top 5, Top 10, Top whatever is how everyone always criticizes someone else's list. As if their list is Fact.

STUPID FUCKS, it's a matter of personal taste and opinion. No one is ever going to agree on it. Why knock someone's opinion simply because it isn't the same as yours? Blah...ignorance is truly fucking bliss.

first and for most, the whole point of us being able to comment on here is for that simple fact, then we can and will.

second,I kno my hip hop and im not trying to put no faade or give the impression as to I might kno some shit.

trird,in music as in films people argue over top what ever list's all the time.we all kno that's that their lists and that's not the point, what are we suppose to not comment as to what we have read?
to sit idle and silent ,is that what the we(me) suppose to do?

I can talk about hip hop all day fam.

Learn to give respect where its due!!!

u read my mind and dropped the comment i figured would be too long to type lol.thats real tho, didnt really picc MY top 5, but it really wouldnt be mine if he did....
