OF BOTSWANA’S Central Kalahari Game Reserve

In 2002 the Gana and Gwi San, or bushmen resident of Botswana Central Kalahari Game reserve(CKGR) were forcibly evicted and moved to resettlement camps outside the reserve, There are several documented cases of beating and torture of the San inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve prior to the eviction. About 150 cut off, their medical services denied and they were banned from their subsistence hunting. The resulting conditions are desperate – whether inside the vast reserve (which is the size of Switzerland) and or in the resettlement camps – alcoholism, violence, despair, prostitution and HIV/AIDS are taking the inevitable toll.

In 2002, immediately after the evictions a San Human Rights organization – First People of the Kalahari – took the Botswana Government to court, rightly claiming that the eviction was illegal. Previously,, in 1951, the San had been granted rights to dwell on their land in perpetuity with the right to hunt, gather, and extract water and to graze limited numbers of livestock with in the Central Kalihari Game Reserve. The case is on going, but we expect justice not to prevail in-country. The Gwi San are already looking into the options of the international courts. This is the same litany of injustice that is prevalent for Indigenous Peoples all over the World.

It must be said that the GANA and GWI SAN look to the 61st commission on Human right to adopt measures to pressure the Botswana government to allow them to return homes. This despite the fact that a UN Special Rapporteur was sent out to assess the evictions two year ago and found the situation to be a human rights abuse of the gravest kind. In 2004, Roy Sesana, the leader of first People of the Kalahari, came to the UN in New York, supported by the Indigenous Land Rights Fund, and gave testimony to the executive of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues to the extent that the situation in Botswna constitutes a cultural genocide. The Permanent Forum then pledged to arrange a follow-up and at the request of the San, wanted to have meeting with the Secretary General Kofi Anan. As of March 2005, there has been no follow- up by the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

It should be noted that the central Kalahari Game Reserve represents the last area of any real size in the Kalahari region where traditional San culture still persists. If this last large domino falls, then, within a generation we can say goodbye to the oldest culture in the world.

The government claims that the San were over hunting the reserve. However, the last game census performed by the Government showed that the biomass in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve almost doubled between 1987 and 1997. It should also be noted that mere months after the eviction – the southern two thirds of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve was leased out to mining companies – De Beers, Debswana and various subsidiaries of BHP Billiton.

It is imperative that the world not let the world’s oldest culture disappear, just for the sake of a few diamonds. Or, are these people disposable to the greed of the multi-national corporations and their exploitation agenda?

Boy’s family blames 7-year-old in baby's death

The family of a 12-year-old charged with capital murder in the death of an 11-month-old baby denied the boy’s guilt Thursday and blamed instead the baby boy’s 7-year-old brother and a family conspiracy orchestrated by their grandmother.

At a noon news conference outside the Harris County juvenile courthouse, the 12-year-old’s mother, aunt, attorney, family spokesman and friends stood together to declare that the boy, whom the Chronicle is not naming because he is a juvenile, was being framed by the family tasked with babysitting him.

The boy’s mother, Tawanna Scott, said she was working while the baby’s mother, Shemika Brown, watched Scott’s son, along with her own baby and three sons, ages 4, 5 and 7, at her southeast Houston home on March 12.

Ronald Ray, the 12-year-old’s attorney, said the baby’s 7-year-old brother threw the child down the interior stairs of the family’s townhouse or over a second-floor railing. The infant died two days later at Texas Children’s Hospital.

He said one of the 12-year-old’s aunts heard the baby’s brothers say the 7-year-old did it, but were hushed and admonished by the baby’s grandmother.

He said the aunt heard the grandmother tell the boys to stick together and blame the 12-year-old.

CPS defers to HPD
Ray said he did not know the aunt’s name or the name of the baby’s grandmother.

Child Protective Services spokeswoman Estella Olguin deferred to the Houston Police Department and the district attorney’s office regarding the claims.

“You would probably have to ask the police or the DA’s office what kind of evidence they had to arrest him, but obviously they had enough to make an arrest,” she said.

Earlier this week, she said the children all said the 12-year-old threw the baby onto the floor.

Olguin noted Thursday that investigators consider the severity of injuries to determine who could have been capable of causing them.

“You consult with the medical examiner’s office and consider what’s possible and start ruling things out,” she said.

Ray said the family called the press conference to answer questions about inconsistencies reported to authorities, including Scott’s involvement.

Mother’s story changed
The 31-year-old mother has said she arrived at the duplex after the baby was injured.

Brown first told investigators she was home cooking when she heard the baby cry. However, according to CPS, she told investigators she and Scott had gone out to get something to eat, leaving at least five children alone at the duplex. Scott denied the claim.

Brown could not be reached for comment Thursday.

“We will investigate all relevant evidence in this case, determine its credibility and take the appropriate action,” Harris County District Attorney’s spokesman Donna Hawkins said.

Scott said she had visited her 12-year-old son in a Harris County juvenile detention facility and encouraged him to stay upbeat.

My take on Asher Roth:

he could have very well be joking around....I will give him the benefit of the doubt here....but what pains me how can you JOKE about a situation on TWITTER about something that so controversial and somthing that many people found so offensive. I treated the inmates fairly and with respect....and mostly by the book! (the inmate handbook is the Bible in there). I was not one who would bring them contraband...but I will give an inmate a pass to the gym or library iffin he wasnt on the list with the notion that he would not ask for such a favor again...LOL

Now in the state prison I worked in. I have never seen nor heard of inmates attacking COs nor have we ever beat them or ruffed them up...NOT EVER when I was there!!!!

I worked in a rehabilitation prison with 2500 inmates...44 lifers but most guys were finishing up there sentence and were due to be released withing 18 mos to a 3 years...So nobody there was trying to get into any trouble.....

Now you talk about CO brutality and I'm sure it happens...but you dont talk about the guys we house...one guy there actually put his child in an incinerator????  Although we arent told inmates crimes to keep inmates and COs from feeling any animosity towards them, but some of those guys were from my home town...so it's hard to respect someone that KILLS an infant like that....

Its a shame too...because this same guy was extremely talented...he took a photo of me in his POD and 10 minutes later he recreated the photo with a pencil that was absolutely magnificent....oh well what a waste!!!!!

But 2 things...

1.  Phil Jackson, his COACH, even told Kobe he was gonna have to have a stellar scoring year in order for that squad they had (the year he went for 81) to do ANYTHING.  The team was young, and Phil knew the players weren't truly gonna grasp the triangle well enough...Oh, and the night he went for 81, it's not like they won by 50 or something.  They ended up winning by like 12 or 13 points.  See what I'm saying?  They NEEDED his 81.

2.  You're right about the "team player" philosophy, but now Kobe has some folks who are doing they thing, and he trusts them more.  Now Kobe has Fish back, Odom is playing well, Ariza has been BALLIN, and of course, PAU, who is one of the better PF/Centers in the league.  Throw in Bynum, and he has a SQUAD, so he gonna play MORE team ball.

You ask me, I think LeBron needed to be MORE selfish EARLIER in his careeer, because he didn't have a Mo Williams or D. Gibson or whomever for while.  They put shooters around him, and now he's killin' 'em...

But again, lemme stop.  LeBron is a BEAST.  Hands down, he was the best all around player this year, and deserves that MVP.

I just want to know what will be said when he doesn't get that hardware at the END of the year...that's all any of them care about anyhow...
