Iconic Soul Singer, Betty Wright, Dead at 66

(AllHipHop News) Soul legend, Betty Wright, passed away this morning after losing her battle with cancer in her Miami home.

The news was shared this morning and confirmed by her niece, Bella.

“My auntie was a legend. She helped me get my first paychecks singing background.. and I didn’t make it to see you this past week and that’s going to haunt me. RIP Betty Wright,” she wrote.

“My beloved sister, Betty Wright @MsBettyWright, is now in need of all your prayers,” she wrote.

As the word spread quickly, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture tweeted a photo of the iconic singer, also honoring her memory with one of her quotes: “I believe in legacy. And I believe in making the radio sound better. If I gotta listen to it, I want it to sound good.”

Betty Wright shot to fame at the age of 18 with her classic song “Clean Up Woman,” which has been sampled by Mary J. Blige and Notorious B.I.G., Chance the Rapper, SWV and Houston rap legend, Willie D.

The Grammy Award-winning artist, had the “Best R&B Song” in 1975 for her single, “Where is the Love.”

Her popularity also grew with other hits such as “No Pain (No Gain)” and “Tonight is the Night,” which was re-worked into a smash hit “I Wanna Sex You Up” for Color Me Badd.

As a backup singer, she is credited for tracks by artists like Stevie Wonder and even Jennifer Lopez.

Even past her prime, as we entered the new millennium, Wright gave aspiring artists her expertise as a vocal coach on Diddy’s “Making the Band.”

Could Roc Nation Sign Tekashi 6ix9ine?

(AllHipHop Rumors) Straight up: I can’t see it happening. The big homie Jay-Z does a lot of social justice work. Meek Mill has been very vocal about the misdeeds and snitching of one Tekashi 69. However, we seen in a single 10 minute IG Live, Tekkie gets 2 million people on there. Last night, two truly talented Queens didn’t get that much. But Badu and Jilly from Philly are not polarizing, faux street rats that only a sheltered Millenial suburban voyeur could love.

Nevertheless, check out what big homie Big Gipp posted.

Ya think? I don’t!

No way does Jay sign Tekashi! No way! The insurance along will break any company!

Taxstone Calls 6ix9ine Out For “Flipping”

(AllHipHop News)Even though he is being accused of murder, Taxstone decided to go public with some statements about infamous “rat” Tekashi 6ix9ine.

If you recall, Taxstone, born Daryl Campbell, was involved in a deadly altercation with rapper Troy Ave at Irving Plaza in New York City in May of 2016.

Tax eventually pleaded guilty to bringing the gun, that killed Ronald McPhatter, into the venue and a few years later, Taxstone still awaits his trial for murder charges on Rikers Island.

Being locked up hasn’t stopped him from voicing his opinion as Troy Ave prepares to become the next rapper to “flip” and testify when Taxstone’s trial date is finally set.

Tax posted a clip of President Trump’s Fox News interview where the POTUS says “Most people are going to do that (flipping). People get ten years in jail, but if you say bad things about somebody, or make up stories, or lies, they flip.”

Speaking on 6ix9ine, specifically, who has been known to “rat people out,” Taxstone wrote a lengthy caption to go along with the subliminal video:

A post shared by Taxstone (@taxstone)

“It’s a sad day in the world where people find sympathy, empathy, and reason in weak people’s decisions. It shows the weakness in most of you. The point that was missed was that a man who committed crimes is now trying to justify why he cooperated,” Taxstone raged.

Tax continued and dropped familiar names in Hip-Hop along the way:

“He chose to do that. But because he didn’t want to go to prison he decided to offer information on people. No one told him to fake gang bang, that was his decision. Just say you didn’t want to go to jail so you told. What did @iamcardib do for you to mention her? What did @casanova_2x do to you? The two of you were just taking pictures together.”

He ended his social media rant with: “It should be illegal for people who commit crimes to get leniency for making things up about other people. Where they do that at? #BeSafeTho

The comments immediately started to roll in. There were many who applauded Tax for still keeping it 100, “This is why culture needs Taxstone back.

Boyz II Men Honor Moms With Tender Virtual Performance On SNL Finale

(AllHipHop News) Boyz II Men stopped by the season finale of Saturday Night Live this weekend to honor moms with a special performance.

The most recent episode of the hit sketch show, recorded from the stars’ respective homes amid the coronavirus crisis, saw Kristen Wiig step in as host, and the iconic R&B group deliver a Mother’s Day-themed performance, head of Sunday’s celebration.

Singing their 1996 hit “A Song for Mama” during the virtual set, the group’s performance included some throwback photos of the cast members with their own mothers.

Michael Che introduced the group, saying: “On behalf of SNL, we’d like to send a very happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers who can’t be with their children this year and all of the mothers that we’ve lost.

“We love you, we miss you and thank you. So ladies and gentlemen and moms, most importantly: Boyz II Men.”

Elsewhere in the latest installment of SNL, Alec Baldwin reprised his much-loved portrayal of Donald Trump one last time, during a skit which featured a virtual graduation for college students.

“I’m so honored to be your vale-dictator,” he quipped during the hilarious segment. “But today’s not about me. It’s about you. Although I should spend a little time on me first, because I’ve been treated very poorly.”

Meanwhile, Wiig’s hosting stint was a hit, and she used her monologue to honor her mom, as they prepared to spend Mother’s Day apart.

“Unfortunately, like a lot of you, I can’t be with my mom this Mother’s Day so I hope it’s okay I tell her I love her,” she gushed. “I don’t know if I truly appreciated my mom the first 45 years of my life, but this year I’m feeling especially grateful for all the things she taught me.

“Thank you so much, happy Mother’s Day. Thank you moms and thank you dads.”

Jay-Z, Yo Gotti & Meek Mill Pressure Georgia Governor Over Ahmaud Abery Murder

(AllHipHop News) Jay-Z and Meek Mill lead the stars at Roc Nation lending their names to a petition for justice over the slaying of African-American jogger Ahmaud Arbery.

Arbery was out for a run near his home in Brunswick, Georgia back in February when he was chased down and confronted by two white men and fatally shot.

The males have been identified as Gregory McMichael and his son, Travis, who fired his shotgun twice, causing the 25-year-old to collapse and die.

The McMichaels told police they thought Arbery was a burglary suspect and claimed the shooting was in self-defense, and no charges were filed at the time.

However, authorities have since come under renewed pressure to take action after cellphone video footage of the incident went viral after it emerged on Tuesday, which appeared to show Arbery had come under attack first.

In an open letter to Georgia Governor Brian Kemp, Georgia Attorney General Christopher Darr, and District Attorney Tom Durden, stars including Alicia Keys and Yo Gotti write: “By now, we’ve all seen the crime’s disturbing video, so the facts here are not in doubt: He was unarmed and innocent and the victim of a hate crime.

“Which is why we call upon you today, as official leaders of the Great State of Georgia, and with the entire world watching, to ensure that a fair trial is conducted, as that can only lead to the appropriate felony convictions of both McMichaels,” they continued. “We also implore you to charge William Bryan (camera operator) as an armed accomplice to the crime.”

They added: “We truly appreciate that you have arrested and charged these men with Ahmaud’s murder, and are hopeful that a trial and conviction will show that, in the state that gave us Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and has been the site of the best and worst of the Civil Rights movement, Dr. King’s words do ring true: ‘The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.’”

The group is also asking for a special prosecutor to be assigned in the case, and are demanding proceedings be expedited.

George Watsky Shatters Record For Longest Freestyle

(AllHipHop News) Have you ever stayed awake for 33 hours, 33 minutes, and 33 seconds? Even if I were running on energy drinks all day, I’d tap out eventually.

For San Francisco’s, George Watsky, he not only kept his eyes open, but he also freestyled for that amount of time; breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest continuous rap performance.

Equipped with nothing but his microphone, water and strawberry smoothies (for nutritional purposes I assume), Watsky voluntarily held himself hostage in his bathroom to drop his lengthy freestyle.

His new record surpassed the previous one by nearly 8 hours. Former record holder, Pablo Alvarez, set his record in 2016; clocking in at just under 26 hours.

(AllHipHop Rumors) The never-ending saga of Tekashi…is still here or there. The rapper came home from jail thanks to an intense fear of dying due to COVID-19. Well, he was doing his 2 million-person IG Live and really leveraged a lot of attention. Suddenly, dude is outside flashing money. That moment was captured by a neighbor. Here is the video.

Who Won? Erykah Badu & Jill Scott Face Off in “Verzuz” Battle on IG Live

(AllHipHop News) Babyface and Teddy Riley set things off last month for the R&B heads during their “Verzuz” battle.

Produced by Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, “Verzuz” has become a popular platform for artists to duke it out and see whose music reigns supreme.

It has also been a favorite amongst the millions of fans who are stuck in quarantine throughout this pandemic.

Earlier this month, Swizz & Timbaland made the official announcement that the Queens of R&B/Neo-Soul, Erykah Badu, and Jill Scott, were going head-to-head as the first women to enter the “Verzuz” battle series, just in time for Mother’s Day Weekend.

Tonight (May 9th) the battle between former tourmates went down over 20 years after two of the genre’s classic albums, Baduizm and Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1.

A variety of celebrities ranging from Michelle Obama to Lil Kim and Tyler The Creator tuned in as they ladies went song-for-song in a battle that drew an audience of over 700,000 people.

Jill Scott had a pretty simple setup, while Erykah Badu opted to have a continuous montage of Bruce Lee’s action sequences as her backdrop.

Each of their loyal fanbases has also chimed in as the ladies ran through hits like “On and On” and “Golden” during the two-hour battle.

So, who won? Well, the fans choose who they choose. But ultimately, it’s another WIN for the culture.

Lauryn Hill Sends Love To Temple’s 2020 Graduating Class

(AllHipHop News) If you’ve ever heard a Fugee album, whether we are talking Blunted on Reality or The Score, vibed out to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill or her underrated MTV 2.0 Unplugged offering, you would know that Lauryn Hill is not just the most talented rappers of all time, but also one of Hip-Hop’s most intelligent.*

Upon graduating from high school in New Jersey, while on tour with her rap group, and after appearing as a regular on a daily soap opera and starring in “Sister Act II,” Lauryn enrolled in Columbia University as a freshman.

Scholarship and artistry go hand-in-hand for the creative, but moreover so does integrity and speaking out against injustice.

Her remarks to Temple University’s 2020 Graduating Class reinforced all that we love about Ms. Hill. Take a look:

Dear Temple University Graduating Class of 2020,

First, congratulations.
Second, congratulations and third, congratulations for accomplishing what at times may have seemed a gargantuan task in the age of distraction—receiving a diploma for years of focus and commitment to scholarship. I know this message finds you in the unique and unprecedented circumstance of a graduation ceremony held remotely, but for the safety of you and your families consider this the beginning of a significant story you’ll have to share with those that follow you. For this time is indeed historic, and if we’re paying attention, pregnant with purpose. Purpose is powerful. The work one puts his or her hands to with purpose attached, becomes charged, activated and often deeply meaningful. Purpose-filled acts can change lives, move communities and alter the course of history.

I hope that you understand the power of your youth—its grace and vitality.
I hope that you understand the power of opportunity and the privilege of knowledge.
I hope that you protect your youth, value your opportunities and continue to grow your knowledge.

EXCLUSIVE: Rapper Kodak Black Files Emergency Motion After Latest Prison Assault

(AllHipHop News) Rap star Kodak Black has filed an emergency motion regarding his sentencing, after he was allegedly assaulted by correctional officers at Big Sandy in Inez, Kentucky earlier this month.

Last week, Kodak Black took to Instagram to reveal he was targeted and assaulted by guards at Big Sandy during an encounter with correctional officers at the maximum-security prison.

According to Kodak he beaten by seven guards during a fight with the C.O.,’s, who allegedly struck him in the head with metal objects, and humiliated him by flicking his genitals while delivering an ominous warning: “you’re not so gangster now, you’re gonna need bigger balls to survive.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/B_uhYbflL-t

Yesterday (May 8th), Kodak’s lawyer Bradford Cohen submitted a motion arguing the rapper is unfairly being punished despite an acknowledged error during his sentencing phase, related to the rapper’s prior drug use.

According to Cohen, Kodak is unjustly being housed with some of the nation’s most violent offenders, even though he was convicted of a non-violent crime when he forged his name on the application to buy guns in November of 2019.

Cohen noted a confirmed clerical error during the rapper’s sentencing, which over-stated Kodak’s history of drug use. Cohen says the BOP is ignoring the mistake, which is keeping him housed inside of a maximum-security prison.

“In this elevated ecosystem, the defendant was recently beaten by prison guards, including a guard inappropriately jabbing at his genitalia,” Cohen wrote, revealing the aggression as an act of revenge for an earlier altercation.

Kodak was originally housed at the Federal Detention Center in Miami, but he was involved in a dispute with correctional officers there too.

Kodak accused unnamed individuals of drugging him, which resulted in a fight between the rapper correctional officers, including one who was hospitalized after the fight.

The rap star hired noted civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, and shortly after the fight inside of the Federal Detention Center in Miami, Kodak was unexpectedly transferred to Big Sandy.

If Kodak’s request does succeed, he could be sent to a minimum-security prison, just not one as tough as Big Sandy, which houses some of the most violent offenders in the United States.

Kate Rose Drops Sensual “Outside” Visual

Kate Rose returns with a brand new visual for her single titled “Outside,” in perfect time for quarantine.

Hailing from Miami, the Egyptian-American singer-songwriter began making music as a toddler, taking piano lessons at the age of two. From there, she discovered her ability to sing and create ballads.

The 2.5-minute visual sees Rose not only performing her record but directing it as well.

“Outside” serves as a double entendre, physically outside but also outside of your comfort zone. The song itself is both sensual and romantic, which comes to life in the video.

In an exclusive quote to AllHipHop, Kate states, “Too many favorite memories from the video! My favorites were getting to murder the pie, working with my best friends on set, and seeing my male models’ nervous reaction to me climbing all over him during the video,” she adds with a laugh.

One of Kate’s biggest goals is to touch the world through her music, by spreading positivity and love. Fans can expect Rose to release her 5-track EP later this year, and a possible album in the works.

2 Chainz Returns With “The Most Expensivest”

(AllHipHop News) “The money in the way. I throw it up, it’s falling down. It’s definitely in the way.”

In the words of 2 Chainz, some people have so much money in the way, they’re throwing it at some to the “most expensivest” things money can buy.

Returning to VICE TV on Monday, May 11th, the half-hour luxury consumer show follows host, 2 Chainz, across the country.

On his trip to various cities, like Dallas and Las Vegas, Chainz dives deep into a culture only the wealthy can afford.

The famed Atlanta rapper reviews diamond headphones, a cool leather jacket for your dog, a hotel that costs $50,000 a night and a tricked out $1.5 million RV.

Heading into its third season, “Most Expensivest” claims this is the “most globally irresponsible and financially foolish season yet.”

And taking a look at the aforementioned items, it’s hard not to agree.

In the show’s official trailer, we see a flabbergasted Chainz as he learns the price tag of some of the items he comes across this season.

The show, itself, has generated good reviews, overall, by fans who are generally impressed by 2 Chainz humorous commentary and ability to host.

Breadwinner Kane Back To The Money With “POPIN FA SOMIN”

When I think of an artist working and striving hard against all odds, one of the artists that comes to mind is Alabama’s, Breadwinner Kane.

We have watched Kane grow from an independent label CEO with ties to major rappers in the South like Juvenile, the late Doe.B, Montana Da Mac, and then there’s Kevin Gates.

But it was the latter who brought change and transition to Kane in 2013. It was during this time that he was named Breadwinner Kane by Gates, and he went from a young street CEO to a working rapper, overnight.

He and Gates performed together, made a few songs (“My N##### On, Childhood,” “Motion” and “While She Talkin”) together and everything looked like one big, happy family under the BWA or Bread Winner Association regime.

But after Gates was convicted in 2016 and 2017, Kane was left to carry his own weight, without the help from the BWA family or Gates who didn’t come home until January 2018.

Breadwinner Kane still has love for Gates and he holds no grudges at all. He says, “we from the streets and f##k this rap s###, you never cross the streets, he will always be my brother, no matter what.”

Since then, Breadwinner Kane has traveled to Europe and Africa and discovered a whole new throng of fans and endorsements, which brings us to the present, where he has over 250,000 fans on IG.

He’s performed over in Africa with major artists in Ghana and Nigeria, owns a clothing store, a night club, a sneaker endorsement, and other merchandise that bears his name and likeness.

Now he’s dropping his first album called “Street Certifed” this Spring/Summer and the first single, “POPIN FA SOMIN” is the lead single.

He also has another single called “Shooters” with another Baton Rouge legend, Boosie Bad Azz, in the chamber, to drop back to back.

In a new partnership with the Para Music Group, Breadwinner Kane is poppin and he’s still making major moves. So one thing that hasn’t changed since day one, Breadwinner Kane is still winning bread.

R. Kelly Fighting Desperately For Freedom With Latest Filing

(AllHipHop News) R. Kelly is trying to bolster his argument to be released on bond by insisting he won’t be harassing his sex accusers because there’s no way for them to communicate.

The “I Believe I Can Fly” hitmaker is awaiting trial for sex charges in both New York and Illinois, but his attorneys have been attempting to have the singer placed on house arrest, arguing that he is “likely diabetic” with high cholesterol and high blood pressure – and therefore would be high risk if he contracts COVID-19 in jail.

Kelly previously had two other motions for release denied, but his legal representatives filed a third plea earlier this month and now the musician is doing his best to prove he won’t cause problems on bail.

In court papers attorneys Steven Greenberg and Michael Leonard explain there are six alleged victims listed in his federal case in New York, but one is singer Aaliyah, who died in 2001, and two others mentioned by name by prosecutors have simply been referred to as Jane Doe.

They go on to state a fourth woman involved in the sex trafficking case was only shown in a photo – and is not someone Kelly is familiar with, while the remaining two, including ex-girlfriend Azriel Clary, have been slamming him publicly, so there is no way he would have any influence over them – even if he tried.

A judge has yet to rule on Kelly’s bid for bond.

Uptown Records Founder Andre Harrell Dies Suddenly

(AllHipHop News) Andre Harrell, one of the pioneers of Hip-Hop and music business, has died suddenly at the age of 59.

Industry sources have told AllHipHop exclusively that the music mogul died suddenly, but do not yet know the cause of death. News of Harrell’s passing traveled fast and the dedications were swift as the mogul was a pillar in rap and R&B.

Harrell’s roots in Hip-Hop are deep. he started as a rapper in a group called Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde and later would go on to found Uptown Records, home of Mary J. Blige, Jodeci and Father MC. Harrell also infamously fired Sean “Diddy” Combs when he worked for Uptown Records, forcing him to be  into a music mogul. He also served at the president/CEO of Motown Records. Diddy and Harrell remained close and would continue to work together. Harrell would serve as the vice-chairman at Revolt and co-found the Revolt Music Conference.

The music industry and friends of Mr. Harrell responded to the news swiftly with love and admiration.

Jill Scott Vs Erykah Badu: More Than A Battle

By Kobie Brown

(AllHipHop Features) Long before COVID-19, the artist Prince released the record “1999”, where he sang of the Armageddon, the possible end of the world, and the biggest party of the year that would usher in a new millennium; the year 2000. In the first month of that fateful year, The Roots dropped their single, “You Got Me”. It is a song that in many ways set the stage for the already epic Verzuz event between singers Erykah Badu and Jill Scott.

“You Got Me” was released on MCA Records, which compared to its contemporaries of Def Jam, Jive Records, Bad Boy or Interscope, wasn’t particularly known for successful Hip-Hop records or artists, but the song featured a dynamic chorus and bridge sung by Erykah Badu and a rap verse performed by rapper Eve. The Roots were unique because Black Music lacked Hip-Hop bands then, and now, and this particular song married fire lyrics by its Philly frontman Black Thought with Eve, a very musical instrumental bed, and an unforgettable chorus. The success that followed was driven by radio’s attraction to the song as well as the voice of its featured artist, Erykah Badu who had stepped onto the music scene two years earlier, winning a host of awards; from Favorite New R&B/Soul or Rap Artist at the Soul Train Awards, to Best R&B Album Grammy Award for the release of her debut album, Baduism. As Def Jam’s Senior VP or A&R, Naim Ali, who was then a product manager at MCA Records recalls, “It was the Roots’ fastest growing and biggest performing radio single at the time of its release. The label chose to replace [its then unknown singer] in order to guarantee a strong radio promotional campaign.”

Twenty-one years later, very few music lovers know the co-writer whose vocals once appeared on “You Got Me” was a woman from Philadelphia. With her performance jettisoned at the suggestion of label brass in order to ensure the record’s success at radio, it would be easy to assume the world would forever ask, Who Is Jill Scott? What followed beside a 2000 Grammy Award for The Roots and Erykah Badu for their offering was, instead, a continuing tidal wave that gave rise to a new millennium of R&B music built upon the success of artists such as Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Angie Stone, Groove Theory’s Amel Larriuex and eventually Jill Scott, who would release her own debut LP in July 2000.

Like their female counterparts, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott gave voice to the lived experiences, love experiences and Hip-Hop sensibilities of music lovers, but most importantly to the first of at least two generations of black women who may have also begun their day with “toast, two scrambled eggs and grits”, and who honored their existing relationships to the refrain of “how can I want you for myself when I’m already someone’s girl?” Like their musical peers in the dominating field of Hip Hop, the production of their music was inspired by, and in some cases, co-written through sampling of, artists who preceded them.

Here’s a look at the record to which their souls and careers are forever tied, and some of their songs rooted in samples of songs from generations past.

THE ROOTS FEAT. JILL SCOTT & ERYKAH BADU

The Roots – You Got Me feat. Jill Scott & Erykah Badu Live at Dave Chappelle’s Block Party (2004)

More than twenty years have passed since 1999 and in the face of a global pandemic, hundreds of thousands, or possibly millions of people, will take a few hours to enjoy a live battle between Erykah Badu VZ. Jill Scott. It seems fitting that producers Timbaland and Swizz Beats, and coordinators of VERZUZ, would promote and brand the event using the image of the late Dr. Betty Shabazz.  In doing so they remind us this event is more than a battle or competition.

Twista Helps Out Inmates At Risk For COVID-19

(AllHipHop News) Rap star Twista looked out for dozens of inmates at the Stateville Correctional Center earlier this week.

Twista headed to the prison with state representative LaShawn K. Ford, to distribute face masks and other supplies to the inmates.

According to Austin Weekly News, Stateville Correctional Center has the greatest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, with over 121 inmates testing positive.

The virus didn’t spare the staff either, with a total of 75 employees who have been infected.

“Social distancing is impossible in prisons,” LaShawn K. Ford said in a statement. “We in Illinois are going to lead by example and provide these crucial supplies such as masks and clean water to employees and inmates at Stateville immediately.”

Last month, Twista teamed up with Ford for the “Mask Up And Live” campaign, which aims to educate African-Americans about COVID-19.

The new campaign is also urging African-Americans in Chicago to practice social distancing.

Donald Glover Hosting Virtual Table Read With “Community” Co-Stars

(AllHipHop News) Donald Glover is reuniting with his Community co-stars for a virtual table read, marking his first Community cast event since leaving the show.

According to Vulture, the two-time Emmy winner, who played Troy Barnes in the NBC sitcom, will join his former co-stars for a virtual table read of an episode from the show, as well as a special Q&A session, on May 18.

Glover will be joined by castmates Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, Ken Jeong, and creator Dan Harmon as they revisit the show, about a study group of unlikely friends at a community college, which ended in 2015 after a six-year run.

The only member of the original cast who won’t return is Chevy Chase, who once reportedly told Glover: “People think you’re funnier because you’re black.”

For the reunion, the cast will be reading season five, episode four, Cooperative Polygraphy, which takes place after the death Chase’s character Pierce Hawthorne, and was the second-to-last episode Glover would appear in before his character exited the show.

The table read will stream live at 5 pm ET on the Community YouTube page, raising money for Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen and Frontline Food, both of which are involved in Covid-19 relief efforts to provide meals to first responders and vulnerable communities across the U.S.

The cast most recently reunited last November, without both Glover and Chase, for Vulture Festival.
