Actress Zoe Saldana Explains Why She’s Not Sorry About “Nina Simone”

As a part of Zoe Saldana’s Los Angeles press tour for her role as Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in “Star Trek Beyond,” AllHipHop.com correspondent Kylie Krabbe was able to catch up with the brand new mom of two twin boys for an exclusive interview.

Here is what she had to say in that straight forward no holds barred conversation.

K: Why do you play so many aliens?  You must be the most diversified actor when it comes to playing just about every imaginable character – whether it is human or other.

Z: It’s imaginative. It’s outside of anything that you may want to box or try to box.  I feel like it’s a much wider palette to channel emotions. I don’t want to just channel being in love.  There’s so much diversity in space – it’s so unknown to us and I don’t like it when you tell me what to paint. I like when you just give me the materials – and not the stereotypical materials of colors and markers and pencils and pastels. Give me material.  Give me fabric.  Give me something and I’ll rip it and I’ll make art. It all depends on how much you want to expand or how much you want to be challenged.  I just feel much more nurtured when I’m compelled to use more of my senses in acting. That’s why I love the circus. I love clowns! I love acrobats that work in the circus because of their artistic ability to express something (that) is innovative. I like innovation.

K: So it is or it is not something where you have specifically angled your career towards playing aliens and interplanetary heroines of all shapes, sizes and hues?

Z: I think I gravitate towards it. It’s not just that these are the only jobs I’m getting and it’s not that I’m turning down earthling roles. It’s just that I had that moment where the first thing that came to me while I was clearing my table was something that came in the form of a green alien.  I’m a very present individual.  I don’t have a life plan.  I haven’t really thought about winning an Oscar.  It would be wonderful, but that’s not my sole reason as to why I’m here in Hollywood and doing movies to get accepted.  I don’t care to be accepted by anything or anybody.  I just want to be an artist.  Everyday I go: ‘I am lucky to be an artist who can support my family based on what makes me happy.’  That to me is something that I am just really grateful for.

K: You say that it excites you to play so many different types of characters from so many different walks of life, but recently many within the African American community faulted you for accepting the role of the late civil rights activist and African American musician Nina Simone.  The crux of that discontent was rooted in the fact that you don’t traditionally identify yourself as an African American or black woman in your everyday life away from acting.  Do you think that this complaint is unfair?

Z: I think it is, but I’m not going to approach this situation from that angle.  It’s not the right angle to look at it.  It’s just not.  This color situation that happened with me and Nina, it’s been happening with me and every person of color forever.  That’s what happens when you pick on a kid so much and you pick on a kid so much that they are going to turn into a bully.  For whatever reasons he may have, he’s going to defend himself.  He’s going to act out of just anger because what is happening and has been happening is unfair.  So what I’m saying is, I’m looking at this whole situation, I’m respecting it. But I’m also respecting my own position and how I view it because I have to honor it.  I know no other way and I don’t know any other experience.  I didn’t operate under any other motive but my own, and I can clearly say and share that those were pure.  Those were really, really pure.  I respect and I am going to respect the opinion, but I know who I am and I know where I want to be, and I know where I am from.  So I wasn’t going to defend that.  I was going to focus on the fact that we all tried.  There were things that were broken in the process.  I came out a better business actor knowing how to make wiser decisions when you start to see signs and know that they are signs of mismanagement.

K: When you say mismanagement, what are you referring to specifically? Because actors of color often get put into boxes and heaven forbid you don’t agree to be inside that particular box.  Is that along the lines of what you are talking about when you say mismanagement?

Z: No, no, no.  More like the business aspect of how films get made.  You have producers, you have writers, directors, you have unions.  You have bond companies, you have insurances you have to file.  All of these things that should be arbitrary in the telling of a story sometimes are so mismanaged that they will bleed into weakening (and) debilitating the quality of the story, of a work.  So I know that those things affected us a lot, but I also know that everybody just wanted to be a part of the telling of a story of Nina Simone.  It’s either that or go work on a show.  Go work on a commercial.  Sometimes you just have to make a decision and take a risk because you are an artist, because you are an active citizen of society, because you’re a victim.  Or you’re just aware of a system that’s broken and this is what you would like to do about it.  Do you understand?  If it was poorly made, poorly received, okay.  But I have no control over that.  That – it already left my hands.  Having respect of others and having respect of self, you think: ‘I’m going to respect it.’  It’s not that I don’t care, it’s just that it is ludicrous on your behalf to believe and expect that your opinion should take precedence over mine for me.  Respect of others is an unspoken word.  I respect everybody’s opinion, but in the same way I respect mine first.

K: Point taken.

Z: Also, one thing I would like to add on like a family level, I’m raising sons.  I want to be a part of a palette of things where they can go, ‘Mom, you’re cool, man.  You’ve been here, you’re present, you f###### bust your ass, you’re behind things that you believe in, Mom.  Thank you for that example.’   I don’t want my kids to grow up knowing that (someone) is always telling them, ‘you’re a black man, you’re a black man.”   You’re a man.  Be a man.  Be courteous.  Be respectful.  Be honorable.  Being black, don’t worry about that.  The world’s going to tell you about it.  At that point, I can only pray that you have a strong enough platform to choose what you want to believe of yourself to be.  That is different.  You know what I’m saying?  It’s different.

K: Another hallmark of the majority of the characters that you bring to life on screen is their inner strength.  Is that something that comes naturally to you or is it something that you make a point of infusing into the characters that you play?

Z: It’s funny.  I always hear the words ‘kick ass’ or ‘strong’ when I’m promoting the movie, but it never occurred to me, because I’m like, ‘you need to come to my house and meet my grandmother’.  You need to meet my neighbor that I just met that I’ve just known now for two years.  She’s a kick ass m########### and she happens to be a woman.  I’ve been surrounded my whole life by women who are overachievers because they have to be, because they want to be.  It’s like, at the end of the day, you close this door.  You may close that door, but I’m still going to achieve something because I have to!  I want to!  So, I never even find that in a woman (character on screen).  I just look at her and the position she has in the story.  I’m a very technical person sometimes.   I’m like: ‘okay, she’s here right now in the story’ and based on that and whatever lines or beats the writers give me, I kind of go: ‘oh no, wait a minute, yeah.  There’s no other way.  She does have to leave, she does have to take that step.  She has to save them.’  But when that doesn’t add up, that’s when you start to have a problem if you go: ‘what this represents is a real woman.’  What I play is not a kick ass woman. I’m playing a real f###### woman, because that’s what I am.

The Game Helps Fund Compton Teen’s Dream To Fly Around The World

Rapper Game is helping make history by raising funds for a teen aiming to become the youngest African-American pilot to fly around the world.

The Dreams star took to Instagram earlier this week to share the story of 16-year-old aviator Isaiah Cooper, who is hoping to raise $45,000 to fund his flight around the world.

If he meets his goal, he will become the youngest person to fly solo around the globe at the age of 18.

The Hip-Hop star, real name Jayceon Taylor, revealed he donated $1,000 to the cause, and urged his followers to make any contribution they can, writing:

“If 49,000 people donated $1 we’d reach his goal in 1 hour…. I DONATED the 1st $1,000 & I’m up early & in a good supportive mood this morning & I hope you are too.”

Earlier this month, Game showed off his philanthropic side once again by calling on fans to donate money for a police officer in Arkansas, as well as two young fans struggling to pay for their mother’s funeral, and he’s hoping they can rally together again for a good cause.

“TOGETHER WE MAKE S**T HAPPEN over here,” he wrote. “So I will ask ALL MY FANS or just any person with a heart to pay it forward TODAY & DONATE any amount from as small as $1… It takes us ALL to support one another…… IF YOU CARE & WANT TO BE APART OF THE SOLUTION, SHOW IT.”

Cooper, who is also from Game’s hometown of Compton, California, writes on his GoFundMe page that he has been attending the Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum (TAM)’s aviation youth program since he was five years old, and described how the organization truly saved his life.

“As I got older, I began hanging with the wrong crowd, doing seriously self destructive things,” Cooper explained. “Realizing that this was not how I wanted to live my life, I returned to TAM. My main goal is to become a productive young man with a future in aviation, and not a statistic.”

The high school student already made history last week (July 18) as the youngest African-American to pilot an airplane around the continental United States.

He flew from Compton across the U.S. to Maine and back again.

Ernest Baker’s ‘Black American Psycho’ Seems To Hint At Drake & Meek Mill Beef

Drake’s friend and writer Ernest Baker’s book, ‘Black American Psycho’, appears to hint much on his relationship with Drake and the Drake & Meek Mill beef.

Although a disclaimer in the front of the book says it’s loosely based on his life and any resemblance to actual persons or actual events is purely coincidental, we know exactly where he got this storyline from!

The book is described to be about an ambitious music writer, Arthur Simon, who is based in NYC while he struggles with tendencies that threaten to derail his promising career as a music writer.

It’s a leaked excerpt from Chapter 9 that seems to tell it all. Chapter 9 is mostly about these three characters Ernest (Arthur), Drake (Rake), and Meek Mill (Bleek Bill).

The novel talks about how Ernest became friends with Drake and how Drake and Meek were once friends, but Meek became salty when Drake’s alleged ghostwriter, Quentin Miller, wouldn’t write for him. The chapter even chronicle’s Drake’s OVO Fest “power point” based Meek Mill “murder”.

Check out part of the excerpt below. What are your thoughts?

“Arthur became close friends with Rake that summer. Their friendship peaked when Rake beefed with Bleek Bill, a rapper who publicly accused Rake of using ghostwriters, and boyfriend of Rake’s ex, Vicki Menage. Rake recorded a diss aimed at Bleek Bill and sent Arthur an early version of the song one night in late July…………………….Rake worked on the song for the rest of the night. By the time he finished, it was 5:00 a.m. “Should I drop it tomorrow night?” asked Rake. “No. Drop the song right now,” said Arthur. “Tweet ‘Scary hours’ before you do it.” “You know what’s the craziest part?” “What’s that?” “I live in the Four Seasons when I’m in Toronto,” said Rake. “Bleek and Vicki had a concert here last night. They’re in the room directly below me right now.” Rake released the song shortly after 5:00 a.m. The song had the intended effect. Rake was instantly crowned the victor in the battle with Bleek Bill….. Arthur went to Toronto the following weekend. Rake was hosting the annual Owl Festival in his hometown……..“Dog, you want to know how the whole ghostwriter sh*t started?” said Rake. “Of course,” said Arthur. “Bleek approached the kid who wrote for me to write for him. The kid was like, ‘Nah, I’m down with Rake right now, so I’m sticking with him.’ Bleek felt disrespected and figured he would try to expose me.” “How are you addressing the beef at the festival?” “You know all the memes that we’ve been sending back and forth?” “Yeah. Some of them are so ridiculous.” “When I perform the diss, we’re putting all the best memes on the screen behind me,” Rake said, pointing to the Jumbotron that crew members were installing.

Joe Budden Claims Drake Messaged Him About Releasing 25 Diss Records For $10,000

(AllHipHop News) Joe Budden’s ongoing musical assault against Drake could have been further ignited by a direct message from the OVO frontman.

The Be Honest With Cari Champion podcast caught up with Budden to talk about his current feud. The “Making A Murderer Part 1” rapper discussed an online interaction he allegedly had with Drake.

“For me, there was absolutely zero to say at all, and then he sent me a very passive-aggressive [Instagram] DM. I didn’t even know how to take it,” Budden revealed. “Then he continued to send them. I said, ‘Whoa, okay.’ That’s why I couldn’t tell you we’re cool today because it sounded like a man who was very hurt and didn’t want to talk to Joe.”

The New Jersey native continued to speak on the supposed DMs from Drake, “He started off with, ‘I would like to formally invite you to one of my four Madison Square Garden shows, August 4… And I bet you can’t release 25 diss records between now and then.’ So then there was the laughing emoji. I don’t know if he’s laughing or joking at this point. Then he followed that with, ‘If you can, I will give you $10,000. Lol. Joey!!!’ I didn’t know how to take that.”

According to the Slaughterhouse member, he replied to the messages by telling Drake he could possibly get to 20 diss tracks by that date.

Budden also doubled-down on his claim that Drake got cosmetic surgery performed on his abs.

“We’ve never heard of a male emcee [getting liposuction]. That’s why it’s a big deal. That’s the only reason it’s even funny,” offered Budden. “I would never say it just to poke fun. That’s accurate.”

Kanye West Disses Taylor Swift On Drake’s “Summer 16” Tour

(AllHipHop News) Kanye West made a guest appearance at Drake’s Summer Sixteen tour stop in Chicago and used the opportunity on stage to take a shot at Taylor Swift.

In a video posted to YouTube, the Chi-town native starts by saying “I’m so glad my wife had Snapchat.

“Now y’all can know the truth and can’t nobody talk s##t about Ye no more,” Kanye told an enthusiastic crowd at Chicago’s United Center.

He then signaled to the DJ to start playing “Famous,” the song which started the drama with Taylor Swift and her crew.

The diss will only add fuel to the fire in Kanye and Kim Kardashian West’s ongoing feud with Taylor Swift.

Kim broke the Internet earlier this month after she posted videos that appeared to show Taylor Swift misled the public about the situation involving the lyrics of West’s “Famous.”

Kim and Kanye claimed Taylor Swift knew in advance about “Famous” and the controversial song’s lines, which take credit for her career.

However Taylor Swift her version of the story and claims she had no clue Kanye was going to call her a b#### in the song.

The Root’s Questlove Claps Back At Fox News’ Bill O’ Reilly Over Controversial Slavery Comments

(AllHipHop News) The Root’s Questlove certainly took exception to controversial Fox News pundit Bill O’ Reilly’s latest remarks towards slavery, which seemed to minimize the harsh conditions that were enforced upon the enslaved.

The initial comments which sparked the backlash originated on O’ Reilly’s “O’Reilly Factor” Fox News program Tuesday, when the media giant chose to address an excerpt from Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia stating the following:

“I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves, and I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn,” the First Lady said.

In an attempt to fact check the First Lady’s statement, O’Reilly then offered some of his thoughts on the conditions that the slaves were subjected to.

“Slaves that worked there were well fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government, which stopped hiring slave labor in 1802. However, the feds did not forbid subcontractors from using slave labor.”

Questlove of The Roots definitely did not take a liking to O’ Reilly’ statements as he shared a post on his Instagram which provided an enlightening backdrop to many of the harsh conditions that slaves were subjected to.

He also addressed O’ Reilly directly for statements that the longtime Hip Hop artist felt were misleading.

“There is nothing more dangerous than a man in a suit pretending to be a journalist giving revisionist history on the ugliness that was slavery.”

Check out O’ Reilly’s controversial remarks and Questlove’s full response on Instagram below.

Amber Rose Planned To Partner With Tyga To Put Kylie Jenner On Blast

Given the fact that Amber Rose and her best friend Blac Chyna are the Queens of Petty, and the fact that Rose has a new VH1 talk show, it’s to no one’s surprise that Amber was once going to use Tyga as a pawn for her ratings.

According to RadarOnline,

Amber invited Tyga on her show after him and Kylie Jenner broke up, and he agreed to appear on the show and be open to talking about any and everything including sex and family drama. Allegedly Tyga was planning to tell everything there was to tell about his relationship with Jenner.

Tyga’s tell-all interview would’ve been a big deal for Amber’s show because everyone seems to be so fascinated with their messy relationship, and because Kylie knew nothing about it. Unfortunately, the interview was cancelled when Tyga and Kylie got back together. It’s clearly all about ratings for Amber.

Dr. Dre Victorious After Gun Case Presented In Citizen’s Arrest In Road Rage Incident

(AllHipHop News) Hip-Hop legend Dr. Dre can breathe a little easier now, as the gun case presented against him in a citizen’s arrest has been rejected by the L.A. County District Attorney.

According to TMZ, the incident stemmed from a rather outlandish scenario in which a man was blocking the driveway to the producer’s L.A. home, prompting the artist to request him to move.

The motorist did so, but was rather upset, leading to Dre pulling his phone out, simply to record the scenario.

After seeing Dre reach into his pocket the irate driver then chimed “here we go again, another black guy with a gun.”

Police were called and Dr. Dre was actually handcuffed in front of his home and searched and no gun was recovered.

The individual however still insisted on making a citizen’s arrest, which as of today has been rejected by the District Attorney due to insufficient evidence.

Jerry Heller, former manager of Dre and classic gangster rap group NWA recently came to the producer’s defense by citing racism in the Malibu area as motivation behind the unfounded accusations.

Nas Discusses Writing Raps For The Netflix Hip Hop Series ‘The Get Down’

(AllHipHop News) Netflix is ready to present its own Hip Hop drama. The Get Down is a music-based TV series set in the 1970’s starring Shameik Moore (Shaolin Fantastic) and Justice Smith (Ezekiel “Books” Figuero).

Several real-life Hip Hop stars are attached to the Baz Luhrman created program. Grandmaster Flash serves as an associate producer, adviser, and character. In addition, Nas has been called a “huge creative force” for the show.

Rolling Stone spoke with Nas about his participation with The Get Down. The Queens icon discussed providing rhymes for Smith’s Ezekiel and other characters.

Nas stated:

I put myself in a position … I said to myself, “If it was you, if Ezekiel was you, you’d be telling your story. I made myself Ezekiel. I said, “Yo, Nas, what’s your story growing up in hip-hop? How do you feel by making it to become a voice in the Nineties, because you remember all the hard times, you remember Mayor Dinkins being elected, you remember New York City when the streets were flooded with crack, and crime was everywhere.” So I am Ezekiel. Ezekiel is older than me, but I am that.

The creator of the 2002 single “Get Down” also revealed he immersed himself in early era Hip Hop by looking at photos of popular clubs like Harlem World and The Roxy. Pictures of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five and DJ Jazzy Jay were used as inspirations as well.

The Get Down is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on August 12. The cast also includes Herizen Guardiol, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jaden Smith, Skylan Brooks, Tremaine Brown Jr., Mamoudou Athie, Jimmy Smits, and Giancarlo Esposito.

Method Man Quits Social Media After Photo Of His Wife Surfaces

Rapper Method Man has decided to quit social media after a photo of his wife surfaced online.

Meth took to Twitter to express the fact that he had lost faith in human decency, and he refuses to give into trolls.

The Wu-Tang Clan legend has been pretty protective and private with his family especially since his wife Tameka has been battling cancer. Although Method Man had to address Wendy Williams back in 2006 for making light of his wife’s health battle, he’s been rather successful at protecting his wife’s privacy up until today.

Celebrity entrepreneur Farrah Gray posted a photo on his blog of Method Man’s wife Tameka. Once Method Man caught wind on this, he took to Twitter to politely ask Gray to remove the photo.

After pleading to no avail, Meth decided to quit social media until further notice. He changed his profile pictures to anti-troll faces, and bowed out saying,

“I guess followers n likes are more important than tastefulness and decency… Smh. I’m done with social media until further notice. I’ve lost faith in human decency and I will not feed the trolls any longer. F-ck u all.”

Many celebrities get frustrated hoping that bloggers & paparazzi etc would draw the line somewhere. They feel that there is no respect for their privacy. Farrah Gray better watch out before Clifford Smith’s other side comes out.
