Mos Def Re-Enters Court With Scarf After Being Forced To Remove Turban; Facing More Litigation In Late March

(AllHipHop News) Just when you thought that racism and prejudice primarily existed in the United States, we learned today that South Africa is still up to its dirty tricks that we thought ended with apartheid in the mid 1990’s.

In an act of blatant disrespect, today a judge forced former rapper and actor Yasiin Bey to remove a religious garment from his head prior the day’s court proceedings.

Despite the prejudiced act by South African courts, Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) returned to court with a scarf on his head in order to still observe his personal religious beliefs.

While it’s believed Mr. Bey practices Islam, turban-wearing traditions can be found in the Indian Subcontinent, Afghanistan, South Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Sahel, and parts of the Swahili Coast which encompass many different religions.

The former Black Star rapper has a new court date set in a case that stems from overextending his stay with an expired visa and “aiding and abetting” his family members to overstay their welcome in South Africa where Yasiin Bey has been living since 2013.

“I am currently in Cape Town South Africa and I am being prevented from leaving unjustly, unlawfully and without any logical reason,” Yasiin Bey said in statement back in January on Kanye West’s website.

In addition to aiding and abetting his family to stay illegally in South Africa” Yasiin Bey is charged with trying to use a “world passport” to exit the country on a flight to Ethiopia.

Currently the Brooklyn bred rapper born, Dante Terrell Smith, is out on what amounts to a $300 bail and has a new court date set for March 24th.

More news as details emerge.

Hopsin Airs Out Funk Volume And Damien Ritter In Power 106 Interview

(AllHipHop News) As the saying goes, “once you sign on that dotted line…”

Such is the case of former Funk Volume and California based rapper Hopsin who recently took the time to air out his former label Funk Volume in a recent Power 106 interview.

In the interview Hopsin accuses Damien Ritter of “taking more money than he deserved and expresses the anger he has over losing the label he created.” He also speaks on his relationship with Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton and the other Funk Volume artists stating that they are all still cool.

“It all kind of started when the Funk Volume 2015 tour started. I’ve been kind of a blinded artist who didn’t ask questions his whole career,” Hopsin explained.  “When you are young and coming into the game, you just want your music to be out there and so you don’t really put your mind into the business aspect of things, but as I started getting older I started questioning more.”

“I noticed I was on the tour and he didn’t tell me what I was going to get paid on the tour until I was on the tour and I had to actually asked him,”  Hopsin said. “So he was my manager, he was playing accountant, he’s been playing the label owner, he’s been playing everything.”

“There was also a lot of stuff with the way things were being ran on the tour and so I just kept asking more and more questions and he was so uncomfortable with me asking the questions.  I feel like as a business man, doing business with anybody you should be able to ask questions,” he added.  “I saw the payment structure of what he sent me when I asked it and it was just something he created. I wanted to know, where did you get this from?

Aside from Ritter playing the role of accountant, label owner and manager, much of what Hopsin says Ritter promised was not delivered in their Warner Brothers distribution deal.

“Damien started negotiating a distribution deal with Warner Brothers and they still promised a lot of things and there were things that were promised, that never really happened,” Hopsin complained.  “They were going to promote the album and give it a bigger reach and that didn’t happen. We didn’t get any late night TV shows and we didn’t do anything we hadn’t done on our own being independent working out of our houses,” Hopsin lamented.

“Damien was the front man for all this stuff, and I just kept asking questions and things weren’t making sense. So I just came to the conclusion I needed a new manager,” Hopsin said of Damien.

Hopsin said he knew everything was wrong when Ritter allotted $50,000 for himself for a tour he was never on and when Ritter got mad at him for wanting a new manager. Whats more is that Hopsin says he’s playing people’s managers, lawyers accountants and more still to this day, but nothing is being done about it.

Snoop Dogg Says His New Leafs By Snoop Edibles Are The “Do It Fluid”

(AllHipHop News) When it comes to Snoop’s endorsement’s of products and services, the list is as long as it is varied.

From Adidas to Overstock.com to Levi’s to Cuca Fresça liquor, Snoop get’s it in and he gets that money – oh yea and he likes the products too.

Snoops latest endeavor is right up his alley though, as the Long Beach icon has taken on weed infused edible foods that will send even the Doggfather soaring through cloud-9.

In a recent interview with Conan O’Brian, Snoop explained how potent the edibles really are and how the beneficial CBD’s are enjoyed by a host of marijuana patients.

“Well me personally, I don’t really agree with edibles because they have a button thats an on, but they don’t have an off button, when it comes to me.  I don’t like not being in control, so I’d rather not, but for those that do, that don’t prefer to smoke, it’s the best, high quality CBD, it’s the top of the line, it’s the do it fluid,” Snoop told Conan.

Cardi B Explains Why Getting With Girls Isn’t Cheating, Blasts Presidential Hopeful Hillary Clinton

(AllHipHop News) With a mixtape flying off the proverbial internet shelves, Love & Hip-Hop headline maker and head turner Cardi B recently spoke with The Breakfast Club about her love life, politics and stepping into the lime-light.

As she chopped it up with Charlamagne, Envy and Angela in a scattered interview, Ms Cardi B explained how her man doesn’t consider her being with a woman as cheating while he is in jail.

For the gossip heads out there, she also explained how she doesn’t plan to get married when her man comes home from jail, but will remain loyal to him despite their issues with his infidelity in the past.

“Like he said yea, it is what it is, and I know that he (Tommy) don’t call her anymore. I know he don’t because they would have posted it right up,” Cardi B explained of Tommy (pictured below).

Tommy (Cardi B)

When Cardi explained that she is romantically involved with another female she said,  “With a female. He don’t consider that cheating, he like ‘send me pictures.'”

But while they will be together when he gets out, its seems like the buck stops there -literally. Cardi doesn’t seem like she wants to get married based on what she says below about prenuptials.

“You know what I realized about getting married. To me it seems like marriage is just a piece of paper. If I want to get divorced, $1000 dollars, divorce byeeee.  I didn’t realize that when we get a divorce he gets half,” Cardi joked. “Marriage shouldn’t be about business and worried about money, I thought it was about love… There’s so many agreements to it, damn I rather just have a baby and that signifies love.

As a balancing act, Cardi B  also showed a more intellectual side of things and took the time to give a slight endorsement for Bernie Sanders, while saying that Hillary doesn’t care about minorities a al Kanye West’s “George Bush doesn’t care about Black people” statement.

“I do want to vote for Bernie, however but there are certain things that you just can’t stop that, its unbelieveable. Like for example he wants to stop racism. It’s like that’s not going to happen! There’s certain things you just can’t do. What are you going to do? Go burn a bunch of Confederate flags in Virginia Beach and got damn Mississippi?” Cardi B said as she endorsed Bernie Sanders. “You can’t change racism, like it is what it is.  I be seeing Trump’s sh*t and it’s ridiculous. Aight then yall go vote for Trump, ya’ll so thirsty to get the economy fixed like when the Germans were when their got money was depreciating that you don’t think about the little things. Like you don’t think Isis is gonna feel a certain type of way and go blow some sh*t up?”

“I do like Hillary just because she a woman and I feel like she’s a strong woman,  however I do feel like she’s a little fake. Like you gotta hit the dab to get a few votes?” she added. “Like girl shut up you don’t care about the Blacks, you don’t care about the minorities.”

The Biggest Diva: J Lo And Mariah Carey Exchange Shots In The Media

(AllHipHop News) Yup she’s still “Jenny from the Block,” and yes Mariah still “doesn’t know who she is.”

It seems like this feud of the super star divas will never come to an end as the two superstars took shots at each other in the media over the last week.

Just last week J Lo was on the Wendy Williams show and when asked about some of the Vegas shows she’d seen, she quickly side-mentioned that she “didn’t see Mariah,” because she wasn’t performing at that time.

“Before I even signed my deal to go to Vegas, when they were offering it to me, they were like we want you to come to this, I saw a bunch of shows.  And I saw everybody, I didn’t see Mariah because at the time she wasn’t playing, she hadn’t started yet,” J Lo said to Wendy Williams and the crowd’s laughter. “She’s forgetful I guess, I don’t know, we’ve met many times, I don’t know, I don’t know her very well.”

Well, word of that little chuckle on the Wendy Williams show must have gotten around to Mariah because last night TMZ caught Mariah throwing shade at J Lo as she jumped in the Lyft vehicle in Beverly Hills.

“I still don’t know her,” Mariah said with a smile, as she signed an autograph and quickly dashed away laughing.

Do you think J Lo knew that this would kick up some dust or do you think it was unintentional? Check the video clips and sound off below!

Was Kim Kardashian’s Twitter Hacked By Kanye?

Kim Kardashian jumped on Twitter last night with a drag session as she decided to let everyone who had something negative to say about her flashback nude Instagram post. Kim Kardashian is known for a clap back and an arrogant remark here and there, but lately there have been rumors saying that she’s only trying to be positive, and that she is embarrassed every time Kanye West goes on a rant. That makes us wonder if Kanye took Kim K’s phone last night. Two of the tweets definitely sound Kanyeish:

“Sorry I’m late to the party guys. I was busy cashing my 80 million video game check & transferring 53 million into our joint account.

“Hey @piersmorgan never offer to buy a married woman clothes. That’s on some ashley madison type sh*t. #Forresearch.”

Even Joe Budden commented saying that he believed that it was Kanye. What are your thoughts? At what point is Kim K going to stop getting naked for da gram?

2 Chainz Denies Getting Robbed!

Photo via 2 Chainz Instagram

What is going on in the A lately? Apparently there was a rumor going around about 2 Chainz getting robbed, and when the rumor reached 2 Chainz’s ears, the alleged source of the rumor was radio personality Big Tigger. 2 Chainz posted a video saying,

“Yo I just tried to called Big Tigger. Somebody @ Big Tigger and tell him to call my phone. Spreading rumors is a no no. You know we don’t f*ck with them rumors. Ain’t nobody robbed, touched me, done nothing. I’m in New York doing radio. RIP Bank.”

2 Chainz later revealed that he got in touch with Tigger, and Tigger said he wasn’t spreading rumors. He explained that he apologized to Big Tigger. He still ended the video saying “Aint nobody touch me.” Hmmm it makes you wonder. We wonder what the complete rumor was. 2 Chainz told a little bit of the rumor by saying he didn’t get touched or robbed. Was the rumor that he got robbed while doing his press run in NYC, or was the rumor that he got robbed when the unfortunate shoot out outside of his recording studio, that took Bankroll Fresh’s life, happened. Hmmmm. Either way, 2 Chainz is doing well and sends positive vibes to all.

Did Steph Curry Sneak Diss Soulja Boy’s Song Inspired By Him?

Steph Curry has been regarded as one of the greatest players and shooters in basketball lately. He has even left some of the other greatest players in total disbelief. Well it turns out he’s not only nice on the basketball court, he’s also nice with his apathy and sneak dissing. Curry was recently asked his opinion on Soulja Boy’s “Stephen Curry” song, he had an interesting response. He said,

“I’ll reserve judgment on that one. He had my jersey on; the video is pretty interesting. The song has my name in it A LOT. It’s not on my playlist though.”

The song isn’t on Steph’ playlist because it’s trash lol! Steph was so polite with his response.

Can Wale Give Love & Hip Hop’s Cardi B A Hit Record?

Wale does seem to have the magic touch at times, and now he believes he can make a hit for Love & Hip Hop’s Cardi B. Cardi B is pretty ratchet but, fans seems to like her more than your Joseline Hernandezes to your Kat Stacks and Superheads. Maybe it’s because she’s hilarious and personable. Wale says Cardi has the juice. Cardi B has her ‘Gangsta B*tch Music’ Vol. 1 mixtape out now. Are you feeling it? Is Cardi what’s needed in female Hip Hop? Do you think Wale can give her a hit that will truly take off?

2 Chainz Reminisces on Bankroll Fresh

(AllHipHop News) Whoever killed Bankroll Fresh is still out there, but his friends are still remembering him and is movement. One such person is 2 Chainz.

Chainz commented on his friend’s murder on the Wendy Williams Show and called the murder “super senseless.”

“He had his own movement called Street Execs. He was an authentic trap rapper from Atlanta who touched many lives and lit up every room he went to. It was super unfortunate, super unnecessary, super senseless – and it just made me want to step up and use my platform for more positivity,” said 2 Chainz.

Bankroll Fresh was killed Friday night (March 4) in a gun fight that left over 50 shell casings at the scene of the crime.
Nobody has been arrested in conjunction with the murder of Bankroll Fresh.

Mark Wahlberg And NBA’s Caron Butler Set To Do Movie

NBA Champion and Sacramento Kings Forward Caron Butler is about to stretch his admirable journey from the streets to the NBA just a bit further into Hollywood proper.  To the delight of NBA fans everywhere, Butler has inked a deal with A-list Hollywood big hitter, actor/producer Mark Wahlberg to make his memoir “Tuff Juice: My Journey From The Streets to The NBA,” into a major motion picture.  With Caron’s memoir already having earned high praise  from the likes of fellow NBA stars Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul and Vice President Joe Biden, it would seem to be the logically step that Butler’s friend and associate Wahlberg would look at the book not only as an inspirational read, but also as a great story for the big screen.  Butler, who first met and became friends with Wahlberg in 2011 during his days as a Los Angeles Clipper, was initially surprised by the idea of making his memoir into a movie when it was first suggested to him by Wahlberg after Wahlberg read a copy that Butler had given him as a matter of course.  Nevertheless, once Butler realized what Wahlberg wanted to do, he was anything but slow on the uptake: “When someone like Mark Wahlberg tells you that your life could be a movie, you listen,” stated Butler in discussing the details how the deal came to pass, continuing: “I’m excited to take the next step towards sharing my story with an even larger audience and it’s a blessing to have someone as well-known and respected as Mark Wahlberg by my side.”

As for the other side of this Hollywood/NBA movie match made in heaven, Wahlberg was equally glowing in his evaluation of his NBA bestie Butler and the necessity of his story being told on the big screen: “(Caron is) a perfect example to all the young kids growing up in tough neighborhoods to never give up on your dreams.” Given the rough and tumble childhoods paired with outsized professional success that both Butler and Wahlberg have lived through, certainly they should do very well as a producing team in telling this Butler’s story with the gravitas and authenticity that it is due.

As an extra added bonus, for those who are excited to see the movie, but are expecting something along the lines of what has been made before with regards to stories of surviving and thriving despite tough circumstances, Butler would seem to be hinting that he and Wahlberg have a trick or two up their sleeves that has yet to be revealed.  ” There hasn’t been a true NBA story told on the big screen like this,” said Butler cagily, continuing: ” We have some actors and writers in mind.  I can’t wait to see how it unfolds on film and be a part of the process.  It is a dream come true.”

Hopefully it will prove to be a dream come true for Butler, Wahlberg and viewers alike.  Butler’s movie will be produced by Caron Butler and Butler’s agent Raymond Brothers of IAM Sports & Entertainment, Mark Wahlberg, Leverage Entertainment, Music For The People and Closest To The Hole Entertainment.

EXCLUSIVE: A Conversation With Jurnee Smollett-Bell About Her New TV Series ‘Underground’

(AllHipHop Features) This week WGN America is set to premiere the new hour-long historical series Underground. The show follows a group of slaves on a mission to escape the bondage of a Georgia plantation for freedom above the Mason-Dixon line.

There doesn’t seem to be a more ideal person to star as the lead character in a program about the journey of the Underground Railroad than a seasoned performer named Jurnee. The creators of Underground tapped Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Friday Night Lights, True Blood) for the role of the perceptive and resilient Rosalee. In addition, the cast for the period piece includes TV veterans such as Aldis Hodge (Leverage), Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), and Jessica De Gouw (Arrow).

I recently had the chance to sit down with Smollett-Bell (who also shines in a music video for her husband Josiah Bell) to discuss her role in Underground. The conversation features the award-winning actress explaining what drew her to appearing in a series covering the often times polarizing subject of slavery in America.

I got the chance to see the pilot. I enjoyed it.

I’m so glad you did.

It was powerful.

Isn’t it? And it wasn’t what you were expecting was it?

Not at all. I have to be honest. I was a bit apprehensive when I heard the show was about slavery.

People are.

What did you think when you first read the script?

I thought the same thing. I thought, “It had already been done so brilliantly. How could you do it better or differently?” Then I wondered, “How can you do this as a TV show for possibly six seasons?” It wasn’t until I read the script that I said, “This hasn’t been done before. The Underground Railroad hasn’t been done before.”

And the tone, pace, and feeling of the show makes it a thriller. It’s not a “slave drama.” It’s an escape drama. It’s about heroes. These are our superheroes. Having realized that is when I said, “Okay, count me in.”

I immediately sent our director, Anthony Hemingway, this long text about how and why I am his Rosalee and he better cast me. He just sent me back a picture of a portfolio. The portfolio has the name “Rosalee” and my picture. This was his pitching portfolio he used to pitch to the network, so he already had me in mind.

You talked about this being an escape drama. There’s a lot of physicality to the show. What was it like during filming?

It was the most physically challenging role I’ve ever done. I remember the stunt coordinator came up to me and said, “Jurnee, you might want to start stretching and getting on the treadmill. Make sure you’re loose, because you got a lot of running to do.” Not just running, I had fights, anything you can think of.

That whipping scene was…

Yeah, that was a tough one. That was emotionally tough on me. Out of all the scenes I had to do in the pilot, that was obviously the toughest to have to go there. Mentally to have to imagine that sort of pain that the Rosalees of the world experienced really overwhelmed me physically. I was just shaking and crying afterwards.

Hearing the sound of the whip does something. It shakes you to your very core. Luckily, we had an amazing cast and director where they let me have a moment once I finished. They just let me cry. But I think it’s important to show that they come from that level of oppression and torture in order for us to appreciate where they eventually go and what they overcome.

Your brother [Jussie Smollett] is appearing on the show. I know you can’t say too much about it.

I can tell you a little bit. He plays a runaway slave named Josey in the third and fourth episodes. He kills it. He’s so different from Jamal [on Empire]. It will really show his range and depth as an actor.

Was this the first time you worked together since you did the TV show [On Our Own]?

Yeah, it was the first time we were in the same project together since On Our Own.

This is kind of a nerdy question, but I wanted to know about the cinematography. There was a scene of you running through the house that was amazing.

Yes! That was incredible. We shot that with a drone as one continuous take. Kevin McKnight, our DP, and Anthony Hemingway, our director, visually thought outside the box and set the tone of it being urgent, desperate, dangerous, and bold.

As soon as I saw that scene, I thought, “This is going to be something different.”

Yeah. Just visually it communicates, “You haven’t seen this before.”
