E-Prosounds Ft. ARP – “Hudson”

For fans of abstract raps that aren’t averse to tread on the lyrical side, allow E-Prosounds to reintroduce you to his signature brand of beats and rhymes. After jumping on the scene last year with his debut free release, The Divine Mind, the Rockland County emcee has been busy developing his craft. For his latest effort, “Hudson,” as featured on his instrumental project, Evan Gang Evolution, E-Pro is joined by Uptown’s own ARP, of Blues Brovas 9000 fame, for a sparse, low key head nodder that reflects their favorite spot to watch life go by. Whereas the Washington Heights rapper’s smooth and braggadocios rhymes differ from E-Pro’s monotone style, it makes for an etherial, bass heavy banger that’s ideal for “ridin’ round smokin’ on the Hudson.” Directed by FRESHPres, “Hudson” showcases both emcees strutting through sidewalks, and rooftops, to riding through Manhattan’s Henry Hudson Parkway…”in that foreign custom, like it ain’t nothin.” Evan Gang Evolution is now available for free download, courtesy of AudioMack.

For those that will be in the NYC this Sunday, head over to Ethik Clothing Co. at 160 Orchard Street where E-Pro will be celebrating the launch of his new video. Complimentary Modelo be served (must have ID), and Henry C will be holding down the 1s and 2s. Ethik is also offering a T-Shirt giveaway, so if you’re feeling lucky, head over to HYPEFRESH Mag, and enter you email address into the widget listed toward the bottom of the page. Winners will be selected at random via email, and will be able to redeem their gear this Sunday, at E-Pro’s in-store!

Will Brennan (Feat. Madeaux) – “Smoke & Mirrors”

We’ve always tried to support Florida bred rapper Will Brennan and his music. In fact Will’s sincerity and realness in his music made him a Breeding Ground Artist here at AHH and some time ago he signed with Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak records. Will Brennan was never shy about combining sounds as his style weaves rap, EDM, and alternative indie sounds together seamlessly.

With his project Black Americana coming up soon Brennan drops the first single “Smoke & Mirrors.” The new single is all about fronts in relationships over a ill Madeaux beat. The producer is signed to A-Trak’s Fool’s Gold Records. Black Americana will come executively produced by DJ Burn One and it will also include production contributions from the Atlanta-bred beat smith.

NLA is giving you the feel of classic R&B with a club edge, and are more ready than ever (after four years of development) to make their mark on the music scene. NLA is signed to Good Look Entertainment and was curated by industry veterans, Keith Thomas and Terrence Carter. NLA has also recently joined forces with Migos for their new single “No Days Off.”

NLA

Take a listen to their new single below.

AllHipHop Caught up with NLA to talk the state of R&B, the need for R&B groups, their sound and more! Check out the interview below.

With the state of R&B and with the inability of R&B groups to last on today’s scene, how do you plan to make your mark, have longevity, and keep the genre alive?

We plan to put out good music that anyone can relate to. We aren’t really worried because the music matters most. Even though we haven’t seen a R&B group in a while, once you put something out that’s real, people can’t help but to gravitate to it.

Who are your biggest influences?

TLC, SWV, En Vogue, Destiny’s Child, Total……..but of course The Supremes and all that came before us. We pay homage and take a little from each group for inspiration.

Describe your sound.

We really have a urban sound. Right now we have been dabbling in the trap world. We want to make sure we make something the urban community can relate to…. what’s in the streets…. what people can feel.

What sets you apart from other groups?

There aren’t really any other girl groups out at the time, so we don’t really know how to compare or measure where we stand there but, we are really good friends, and what we have hasn’t been pieced together. The chemistry is really there, and we are making music that we love. We understand how important it is and how much of a blessing it is that we genuinely like each other. We all had our journeys, and we are still together. This separates us from the girl group world that has so many issues that people run from.

What do you think of the current state of R&B and what will it take for there to be a resurgence in the genre?

I think the current state of R&B is sad, so to be honest I think that in order for it to be revived, us as a community has to embrace what makes it so amazing. We bring that cool factor. We aren’t trying; it’s really what we do. We are trying to get back to that feeling that you had in the ’90s that made you love music. There are no girl groups off the top of my head that I can recite the lyrics to their songs. That’s sad, but we can definitely bring that [girl group] to the table at this point.

What’s next for NLA?

We are putting together an EP. We don’t have a release date yet, but we have put together an amazing body of work. Right now we have an amazing single out with Migos called “No Days Off” that has been receiving crazy radio play. We are constantly rehearsing and recording. Soon we will have a visual out for “No Days Off”. We are ready to go!

What other artists have you gotten the chance to work with?

We’ve worked with Shanell from Young Money, Rock City, Ester Dean, Yung LA, and Verse Simmonds.

If you had a wish list who would you want to work with?

Drake…..Nicki Minaj…….Fabolous

Lastly, is there anything else you would like to leave with your fans?

Continue to support us, and continue to follow us. Embrace us for what we are trying to do and bring back. We promise we will not disappoint; the music is amazing. It was even hard for us to even pick a single. We just really went back to the basics and hope fans can appreciate what we are bringing. Follow us on @NLAMusic on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Soundcloud.

Jidenna Clarifies Comments About Nigeria In Statement

Jidenna received much backlash after discussing the precautions he had to take while attending his father’s funeral in his native of Nigeria five years ago. In a recent sit down with VladTV, the “Classic Man” singer said he had military personnel to ensure his safety and carried AK-47s while there for his protection.

Sharing his experience led to him being highly criticized by people who felt he was portraying Nigeria as a violent place.  He took to Jidenna.com to respond with an open letter. In the letter, he expresses that he understands people’s anger but having protection was “not an uncommon protocol at the time” due to the kidnapping rate being so high. The Wondaland Records crooner also clarified his use of the term “light-skinned” in the interview as well.

If you haven’t seen the interview watch it below and then peep the letter.

Read the full letter below.

To all my Nigerian brothers and sisters…

I am, always have been, and always will be proud of my Nigerian heritage. I understand the pain and anger caused by some of the comments I made in a recent interview, and I wanted to address you directly. Contrary to popular belief, this interview was not the first in which I mentioned Nigeria. In fact, I’m frequently bragging about how Nigerians attend the world’s most prestigious institutions, and how we are known to produce world class doctors, entrepreneurs, innovators, lawyers, engineers, professors, athletes and artists. Unfortunately, people tend to leave these moments out, and, in this case, highlight stereotypes. I would never do or say anything to intentionally disgrace the legacy of my father nor my fatherland. But to not relay my own story, both the good times and the bad, would be a disservice.

My name is Jidenna, which means “to hold or embrace the father” in Igbo. It was my father who gave me this name and who taught me countless parables, proverbs, and principles that made me the man I am today. These same principles helped me to write the record “Classic Man.” When I brought home a 98 percent on a test, my father would say, “ah ah, where are the other two points? Go and get them, then bring them back.” My father and Nigerian culture has always stood for excellence. While the majority of my childhood memories are beautiful, I also have experienced the challenges that Nigeria has faced since Independence.

When I was 5 years old, my family was robbed at gunpoint, my mother was beaten, family members were kidnapped, and I was shot in my foot. As is the case with all kidnapping, targeting those who are perceived to be wealthy is the objective. In this instance, my father was the target because of his prominence in the community. This was a traumatic experience for my family that would shape our entire lives and our experiences in both Nigeria and America. As a little boy, I swore that I would never let that happen to my family again. As my father often said, “Once you’re bitten by a snake, you‘ll be ready to shoot a lizard!” At the time of my father’s burial 5 years ago, my family in the village was concerned about increased targeting for kidnapping since the rate of abductions had increased dramatically in the area we are from. We were traveling from America, which along with our biracial appearance, had the potential to attract attention and pose a threat to our security. In light of what happened in the past and the tense climate at the time, my family took precautions to ensure our safety. This was not an uncommon protocol at the time. I recognize incidents such as these are not unique to Nigeria or the African continent, and there have been significant improvements in the region since this period.

In the recent interview to which I’ve been referring, I shared my family’s experience traveling from the States back home for the burial. In this interview, I used the term “light-skinned.” When using this term, I was actually referring to my immediate family’s mixed or biracial appearance. See, no matter what language I use to describe my heritage, I’m certain that someone will feel some kind of way. This is a larger discussion not meant for this statement, but certainly derives from our colonial past and postcolonial present, and in the States, from the days of slavery to the present times. My comments about skin tone were related to the notion of perceived wealth and value, not my personal beliefs. My point was never to imply that biracial or “light-skinned” people are the only ones or the most targeted group of people kidnapped, or that I myself was wealthy at the time. Rather than focus on my perceived value, let us continue to focus on the value of Nigeria.

There is no question that Africa is playing a pivotal role in the future of our planet and that Nigeria, with it’s booming economy and burgeoning middle class, is a driving force. I will continue to play my role in the Renaissance taking place in Nigeria and Africa at large. We may not agree on everything, but know my heart is your heart, and my experience is part of our collective experience.

The two apparently settled their differences after conversing.

Did Young Thug’s Girlfriend Admit He Was Gay?

Photo via Young Thug’s Instagram

Young Thug’s girlfriend Jerrika may have just admitted that the rapper is in fact gay. The couple has denied the “gay” rumors for sometime, but we find it peculiar that his girlfriend was more concerned with a fan calling her a “wrist watch” aka an arm piece/beard more than the same fan calling her boyfried gay. It’s too late for Thugger to come back even if he never was gay. Jerrika has since deleted the comments.

Too $hort Serving 90 Days In Jail

Too $hort is currently sitting in jail after rejecting a deal offered by the judge on his DUI case, TMZ reports.

After accepting a plea deal regarding a DUI in 2013, a judge ruled that he be on probation for three years and complete community service instead of serving jail time. When the Oakland native appeared in court today (July 17), he had no community service hours to show the judge. The judge was generous and offered him more to complete the community service but only if he agreed to be on probation for three more years. The “Shake That Monkey” rapper turned that deal down and opted to spend time in jail because he didn’t want to be monitored anymore.

He began serving a 90-day sentence after his court appearance.

Future Isn’t Happy With Ciara’s Parenting Choices?

Future has had a lot to say about Ciara, her new relationship, and her parenting style. He wasn’t too happy about Ciara bringing her new love Russell Wilson around baby Future so early in their relationship. He says in the black community people don’t bring people they are dating around their significant other that early on. Fans weren’t too nice to Future on social media as they brought up the fact that he has a million baby mamas, cheated on Ciara when she was pregnant, and possibly has groupies around his kids. CiCi is not off the hook either. Why would a woman have their first child or any children with a man that has several baby mamas? Is Future Hendrix salty?

Suge Knight Says He Has A Brain Tumor; Lawyer Tries To Reduce Bail

According to the Associated Press, Knight’s lawyer, Thomas Mesereau, is expected to appear in court Friday (July 17) to express that Knight’s bail is excessive and should be reduced. However, the prosecutor is arguing that the bail amount is appropriate considering Knight’s lengthy rap sheet. Knight’s bail was initially set at $25 million but was reduced to $10 million in April.

Besides trying to get his bail lowered, Mesereau is also trying to get the former Death Row CEO into a new jail, TMZ reports. He is arguing that Knight’s mental and physical health is deteriorating and that he may have a brain tumor. Mesereau claims that Knight feels numbness on one side of his body and that could be due to a brain tumor. He wants his client transferred to a jail where he would have full access to a medical facility. The toilet is Knight’s cell also flushes every 20 minutes, which is allegedly driving Knight crazy.

Rick Ross’ Baby Mama Tells 50 Cent To Pay Up?

Photo via 50 Cent’s Instagram

“B- better have my money! It seems like 50 Cent’s bankruptcy is a legal trick by the rapper to avoid having to pay Rick Ross’ baby mama that $5 million. Rick Ross’ baby mama, Lastonia Leviston, is not having it and she is headed to federal court to beg the bankruptcy judge to allow the trial on the unauthorized sex tape to go on.

A jury awarded Leviston $5 million after she sued 50 for leaking a sex tape featuring her online. Her claim was that he leaked the tape to embarrass Ross and to gain publicity for himself. Since 50 filed for bankruptcy, this has put a stay on the New York court proceedings, meaning the jury can’t proceed with determining punitive damages in the case. According to Leviston, 50 has tried every dirty legal trick to prevent the trial from happening, and even more tricks since she was awarded $5 million. She is trying to get her money, so she wants the bankruptcy judge to continue with the case. 50 Cent is something else!
