Kanye West Explains Original “College Dropout” Title, Jay Z Denying Collaborations In Rare 2002 Interview

(AllHipHop News) Kanye West has been spouting out opinions and proclamations to anyone in ear shot for over 10 years and a rare interview surfaces to give a deeper insight to who Kanye West was prior to his fame. In a 2002 interview with former Mass Appeal writer Noah Callahan-Bever, Kanye West speaks on what he originally was going to originally going to title College Dropout, how Jay Z denied him collaborations on a few songs and more.

According to Kanye, Jay Z denied him when approached about appearing on both Jay’s first two singles off Blueprint 2, “Excuse Me Miss” and “03 Bonnie & Clyde”. Half of Kanye’s verse for “Excuse Me Miss” Was released on his Freshman Adjustment 2 mixtape on his “Excuse Me Miss Remix” song and he released a freestyle on “03 Bonnie & Clyde”. However, in the interview, Kanye raps a completely different verse intended for “03 Bonnie & Clyde” than the one that appeared on his freestyle:

Kanye’s Unreleased “03 Bonnie & Clyde”

Ayo, planes, trains, automobiles
The G500 with the auto-roll wheels
The Pinot Grigio got ‘em on chill
See now, see me hoe, I got that deal
If you trying to build, I bet you’d like that
My father was a Black Panther with Geronimo Pratt
And back in college I ain’t run with no frat
I just ran with the track that put the Chi on the map [1]
Now the Roc in the building UIC Pavillion
Two years ago I was just a civilian
Now every chickenhead swear I got millions
In area codes with unidentified children…
I used to want the Jordans that’s most recent
Now I throw Jordans on the whip just to look decent
Just to get pulled over by the precinct, so frequent
It’s like I’m back being a delinquent
They want to know where I live, stay and work
How a young black n*gga get all these perks
How I stack my paper, got adidas in every flavor
Excuse me officer, I don’t know Rod Laver
Or Stan Smith
What they don’t understand is, how I got that color in canvas.

One prominently poignant part of the interview is Kanye West’s idea of what his at-the-time unfinished debut album College Dropout meant. Kanye has said in numerous interviews and on College Dropout first single “Through The Wire” that the car accident changed his view on how he makes music, however he still had the same idea of what the album would be and even had a different title originally:

That’s exactly what I want people to think with that title: “I’m right there with you.” I’ve thought about calling my sh*t I’m Good, because that’s a “cool” title, like just having a title that’s like, “Yo, you can’t criticize that.” But for me to try and put on the facade of being the coolest m########### ever, it’s not going to come across like that. I’m not saying I’m the coolest m########### ever, I’m just saying I’m just a f###### smart-a*s. I got to put it in raps.”

Kanye’s early struggles attaining a record deal have been well documented over the past decade by journalists as well as himself on College Dropout outro “Last Call”. However, Kanye delves into the “catch-22” that Def Jam’s lack of appreciation for him placed his young career in and elucidates why some record labels avoided signing Kanye West in 2002:

Capitol, they offered me like a half million or something like that, then right before, I think one of the people at Capitol said, “Nah, I don’t f*ck with Kanye because if he could really rap, Def Jam would’ve signed him or he’d be on the Roc.” So it was a catch-22.

Ten Years of Truancy: The College Dropout’s Grand Anniversary Editorial

The views and opinions expressed herein are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of AllHipHop.com.

Recently, Kanye West’s interviews have been more entertaining than his music.  And that’s saying a lot considering that respected Hip-Hop reporter and radio personality Sway Calloway not long ago described Mr. West as, “one of the most impactful voices to ever grab a microphone.”

I don’t disagree with Sway either.  I think Kanye is a musical genius whose love for his craft shook up a complacent music industry.  However, even with over 20 Grammy wins and six consecutive platinum solo albums to his name, Kanye’s strongest career achievement to date is still his classic debut, The College Dropout.

Today, February 10, 2014, marks the album’s tenth anniversary and so to celebrate its landmark birthday, I’m going to break down why it is the most significant entry in the Louis Vuitton Don’s catalogue.

Thinking back to the climate of Hip-Hop in late ’03 when I was 16- 50 Cent mania was still in effect, Jigga was “retiring,” and OutKast was riding high on the success of Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.  As a rap fan, I was caught up in all that.  So when I heard about Kanye’s upcoming album around that time, I was skeptical.  There was no way this producer was going to hold his own as a rapper with all this other stuff going on.  Plus, with The Black Album in constant rotation too, I thought , “ This is incredible!  How is Roc-A-Fella ever gonna be able to follow this up?”  I found myself eating my own words after catching the video for “Through the Wire” though.  After seeing that, The College Dropout couldn’t come soon enough.

When I did get the album the day it was released, it lived up to the hype.  It was a no-brainer that the production was going to be crazy, but one thing that specifically caught my ear that I wasn’t necessarily expecting was the sequencing of the LP.  It’s actually one of my favorite things about it, especially considering all the guest features.  From how the satirical take of “We Don’t Care” is soon followed by the thought-provoking content of “All Falls Down,” it pieces together nicely.  Then to have a song that brings  up humble beginnings, “Spaceship,” precede something as powerful as “Jesus Walks” is mind-blowing.  The last three records also connect smoothly to end the album on a very high note.

Writing-wise,  The College Dropout is great.  An often referenced line from it is the one where Kanye refers to himself as the “first n***a with a Benz and a backpack.”  And while that certainly applies to West’s masterful ability of blending mainstream and underground Hip-Hop, I’ve always interpreted it to mean , on a larger scale, that he’s just acknowledging his many facets as an artist and human being.  He isn’t just one thing.  He is far from the “first” person to contradict himself, but he is the first to point those contradictions out so succinctly and creatively.

Kanye does have some short-comings as an emcee, yet one of his strengths as a performer is his lyrics.  And while I respectfully disagree with some of his candid commentary as of late, I believe it is that same fearlessness that has given Kanye the strength to write on such a wide variety subjects, even some very revealing stuff.  “Act like you ain’t took a bath with your cousins / Fit 3 in the bed while 6 of y’all / I’m talkin’ ‘bout three by the head and three by the leg / But you ain’t have to tell my girl I used to pee in the bed.”

As far as the actual music, the album sincerely exceeded my expectations.  Considering how in-demand Kanye West was at the time for his production, the fact that he made 16 great instrumentals (and five skits) that didn’t sound repetitive of anything else he’d done is fantastic.  I remember talking about that with a friend once, and us agreeing that was when we knew Kanye was an emcee in his own right in addition to being a producer.  He really kept some of his absolute best beats for himself and that was setting himself up to catch Hell if he rapped on them poorly.  Fortunately, he didn’t.  And for my money, the track for the aforementioned “Jesus Walks” is one of the greatest ever.

While My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is probably Kanye’s best album overall, The College Dropout is his most humanizing and that is why it’s my favorite.  The music on it wasn’t the reaction of a star who President Obama called a ‘jackass,’ it was the culmination of a kid from Chicago locking himself in a room doing five beats a days for three summers.  And it’s that passion of his which took the form of a 70+ minute compact disc that I played to the point of scratching it.

After overcoming adversity of all sorts, Kanye proved that he was a legit emcee, covered a lot of topics in his rhymes, put together some great records, and, most importantly, made listeners care about him and what he was saying.  It is a feat attempted by many, but achieved by few.  And The College Dropout did that and then some by also inspiring an entire generation to buck the system in a way that Hip-Hop never had before.  Therefore, it has earned a spot in Hip-Hop history where it can never be replaced.

Respect due and Happy 10th Birthday.

Robocop Re-Make Lives Up to 80’s Original

With more and more 1980’s remakes hitting the big screen every year it was a great surprise for 80’s cult movie followers when the powers that be at MGM decided to re-create the action packed crime buster flick Robocop.

Set in a future time when robot drones police other countries around the world but have yet to take hold in the USA, Raymond Sellers (Michael Keaton), owner of the drone manufacturing company OmniCorp is unrelenting is his quest to conquer the home front with his robot drones.

In order get sales at home he knows he must create the first half-man half-robot police drone to appeal to the American public and congress, a cause he will fight for at all costs throughout the movie as Keaton ironically plays the money hungry villain.

Official Trailer #1

With the help of a mad scientist (Gary Oldman), Raymond Sellers creates Robocop in an attempt to appease the American public and congress’ desire for a more human-like robot police officer.

Subsequently, after Detroit police officer Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) is blown up by a car bomb in the line of duty, his wife (Abbie Cornish) agrees to allow his mangled body to be used for the Frankenstein-ish operational procedure.

Robocop Behind the Scenes/B-Roll

If you caught the original 80’s movie, you would know that while Robocop’s operation is initially a success, on his quest for justice he struggles to reconcile his life mentally as Alex Murphy in the aftermath of his procedure.

Eventually Robocop goes into a rogue state and takes matters into his own hands as Alex Murphy “the vigilante.” Gradually Alex Murphy’s consciousness takes over and Robocop recalls his life that once was.

Joel Kinnaman,  Samuel L Jackson and Gary Oldman Speak on Roles in Robocop

With the help of Alex Murphy’s partner on the Detroit Police force Jack Lewis (Micheal K. Williams – The Wire, Boardwalk Empire, 12 Years a Slave…), Robocop fights to find his killers as all hell breaks loose in Detroit.

If anything, the movie is at least worth checking out because of Samuel L Jackson’s appearance as Pat Novak, host of The Novak Element, a nightly news show a la The O’Reilly Factor on Fox News or Wolf Blitzer on CNN. Samuel L is in classic form and an asset to this film in his role as the omniscient narrator.

Trailer #2

The irony of this movie drove the plot in a humorous fashion as Michael Keaton contrastingly plays the villain role in the action packed super hero movie. It was also funny because Keaton’s role as Batman required a similarly uncomfortable suite during filming in the late 80’s and early 90’s. During press interviews Joel Kinnaman (Robocop) joked about how uncomfortable the Robocop suit was to wear and how he received no sympathy from Michael Keaton on set.

The rest you will have to go see in theaters, as I wouldn’t suggest waiting for DVD or Blu-Ray. The special-fx and high speed scenes are too great to miss on the big screen and worth shelling out the extra cash for some popcorn and a soda. If you like super hero movies, action, sci-fi and love the 80’s this is your movie. While re-makes are never quite as good as the original to cult followers, this one comes close as the souped-up Robocop does look extra dope in black.

Robocop hits theaters February 12 nationwide.

Buckshot Addresses His Argument With Hot 97’s Ebro Darden

(AllHipHop News) It appears the issues between Buckshot and Ebro Darden continue. After the rapper and the Hot 97 program director spoke face-to-face about comments each made about the other during their respective Combat Jack Show interviews, Buck addressed his problems with the radio personality again with VladTV.

[ALSO READ: Buckshot & Ebro Have Heated Debate About Hip Hop Radio, Battle Rap & “Minor Artists”]

During the interview, Buckshot calls Ebro his “brother” but states that their contentious discussion about the state of New York Hip Hop was the result of Darden’s initial statements.

“Ebro set if off by talking some s**t,” says Buckshot. “Ebro got a habit of saying little slick s**t out the side of mouth. Then he just recently said, ‘F**k it. I’m going to take the role of the bad guy.’ That let’s you know dude is tired of being funny out the side of my mouth: ‘I’d rather just be the people’s bad guy, so I can say s**t I really want to say that gets n***as riled up’.”

At one point, Buck faces directly into the camera and once again addresses Ebro’s statements that Duck Down artists do not appeal to women.

“You standing there with a tight ass Moncler jacket on, and you sitting there talking about, ‘n***as don’t get no p***y’,” states Buck. “That’s all you really wanted to say.”

The Boot Camp Clik member took offense to Ebro’s suggestion that women at Duck Down shows get assaulted. He feels when someone in Ebro’s position makes those type of claims it can effect people’s decision to attend a show by artists from the label.

He also admits that Duck Down does not make “fruitcake songs” like Drake that appeal only to women, but adds that some rappers make records that both genders can enjoy.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Drake’s Got A Pregnancy Rumor…Guess Who?

Straight up. They are saying that Drake got Jhene Aiko all pregnant. As of this writing, I had not seen any sort of report refuting this rumor, and also nothing confirming it. Some “sources” are saying its true. That little SNL interaction they had a few weeks ago don’t do anything but strengthen this rumor. Nobody I’ve talked to believes this one. I doubt its true, but something may have happened between them. She’s already a mother, but, since I’m not a fan, I don’t know all the details on that.

On the flip side, Drake has been hanging out with Rihanna quite a bit as of late. The everlasting rumors about them persist.

I’m not even going to get all into that. It bores me and I bet it bores you.
