Curren$y Talks New Mixtape, Joey Bada$$ and No Time Off

New Orleans resident and Jet Life leader Curren$y helped celebrate his hometown hosting the Super Bowl this past Sunday by dropping his latest free mixtape New Jet City on the day of the event. The 14-track project features songs with Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, Styles P, Juvenile, Lloyd, Trinidad James, French Montana, and Jet Life Crew members Young Roddy & Trademark Da Skydiver.

In between challenging his boys in video games and preparing to shoot his next music video, the hardest working man in Hip-Hop spoke with AllHipHop.com about how New Jet City came together, the latest on the joint project with Wiz, his feelings about the current state of Hip-Hop, and more.

AllHipHop.com: New Jet City is your 15th project since 2011. A lot of those were projects you released for free. What drives you to record and release so much free music?

Curren$y: Seeing that people are happy with the output of the music, and that just makes me wanna keep them happy. If they like the music it’s nothing for me to go to the studio. I always say when people ask me about the output of the records, I always say if my favorite rapper went to the studio that much I would be happy. You only want as much out of your favorite rapper that’s possible. If Max B would have released a song everyday I would have been in heaven. He was one of my favorites, so I feel like the people who listen to me, if I’m one of their favorites, they want to jam as much as possible. So it’s nothing for me to do it.

Before you dropped the tape you said that you thought you might release it as a compilation featuring Young Roddy with you only being on about 5 tracks. Why did you decide to take on most of New Jet City yourself instead?

Everybody’s got their on projects that’s already set-up for the year. Roddy’s got Good Sense 2, so he’s gonna have a platform where he can get out all his music. He don’t really need that as much. I’m gonna focus on getting everybody else’s projects as much light as they deserve, so I really just got myself out the way, so I can step out the way. This was really me just doing that right quick. Then I’m gonna get in the lab and focus on my retail project and let my homies hold down the streets and pumping out the free music to keep the buzz and build the awareness of the rest of the camp.

Speaking of your next retail album, you recently tweeted that you and Ski Beatz started working on some new music. How far along in the process have you gotten for you next studio album?

We haven’t lined up physically. He’s been sending some music through, and I’ve been recording since we’ve been working on New Jet City. I was already working on the album. I got some songs on the side. I don’t know exactly how many, but I got some jams from Ski and a few other people.

How do you decide which tracks you want to put on your mixtape versus which ones you want to save for your retail album?

It’s just based on how they sound. I don’t really say when I start recording “oh right now I’m working on such and such” or “I’m working on this project.” I’m really just working, and where ever things can fit, they fit. We just go to the studio everyday just on the strength. It’s not really because we’re working on a said project. It’s just, we make music, so we got to be in the studio. I just happened to sit back and say, “I hadn’t put anything out in a second.” Even though I just dropped 3 Piece Set, it was just three songs, and I was like well let me give them some more jams before I fall back.

You say you try and get in the studio everyday. What’s the longest you’ve actually gone without recording? Have you ever taken a week off?

A week? I don’t know. Not a complete week. And that don’t happen til we get on the road. Once we’re on the road and we’re doing shows sometimes you just can’t get to the studio how you want to. Even though we got the set-up on the bus, sometimes you doing long travel days and it’s so much noise on that bus while we on the road. You can’t record while it’s moving. Sometimes you might end up not being able to work for a day or so, and that right there drives me crazy. So there’s no such thing as a week. No, I couldn’t imagine that.

How did the track with Juvenile come together?

I went over to his studio really just to kick it. I got a little thing I do on Wednesdays, this lounge I host, and he came through there and kicked it. So I went to his studio the next day just to say wassup. And just from kicking it and going through some beats we heard some s### that we agreed upon. It made no sense to just keep listening to a beat and saying it was tight, talking and smoking. We might as well get some work done. I wasn’t even sure what I was gonna do with it. That was the first record I recorded after [I came up with] that name “New Jet City.” After I did that record, I said well I feel like recording again, so I did a couple more jams and I was like “well s### I still got that New Jet City title I’ve been throwing around so this will be it right here.” After that I just went in and got it all done.

What about the tracks with Trinidad [James] and French [Montana]? How did those come together?

Well, me and Trinidad hung out in Atlanta some months ago. I went to one of his shows and then the next day he came to the studio. We did three records that night. Lloyd came to the studio that night too, and he had the beat and the hook already. So we just wrote some verses to that s###. That’s how I got that record. And me and Frenchie been cool since 2008 or some s###. We been doing records for years, so I just called and was like, “I gotta get you on the tape.” Even though he got so much s### going on- he’s achieved that f###### mega-star status- he still kick with a underground n####. It was no problem for Frenchie to stop and do that. That’s why I’ve been saying thank you to everybody. I didn’t just call basement muthafuckas. Ross, Frenchie, Juicy J. Muthafuckas who on the road picking up bread. I was like, “stop right quick and give me a verse before the Super Bowl.” Some muthafuckas I called like 48 hours before.

So they did their verses right before the Super Bowl?

I called everybody like right at the last minute, and was just like, “I need a verse from you.” People were sending that s### back within like 48 hours of me calling them. That was like some crazy s###. Everybody just helped me out. That was tight.

So you’ve got some really good relationships with people in the industry?

You know what? It really showed me that. You extend yourself and you try to look out when people reach out to you. When people call me, if I got time to do it, I definitely try and get to the studio and handle your s###. A muthafucka will see you and tell you all the time to send something through and that’s kinda just the f###### “get out of jail free” card. Muthafuckas just tell you that s###. I can’t just sit on that s###. I was like remember you said… Muthafuckas was like alright. I just sent an e-mail, or muthafuckas was like “I’m at such-and-such studio come swing through,” or they were like “text me the address of where you at.” That’s how I got all that s### done.

You did an interview last year where you were quoted saying you felt “hip hop is f##### up” at the time. Do you still feel that way now?

Not so much. There are people who making strides, and people are fighting. Joey Bada$$ is around. Just seeing the moves he’s been able to make. And knowing how much time he’s got left to grow in the game. It’s promising.

Are there any other artist out now that…

It’s a grip, but if I name more I would leave out some. But Joey is the homie. Joey is in my heart for sure. I make no bones about mentioning him.

Do you think a collaboration with him could show up anytime soon?

Yeah, we’ve already exchanged info. We working.

What about the project with Wiz? Do you guys have an idea of when that’s going to drop?

When the smoke clear. You know my man trying to have his son. He got a baby on the way. I gotta shoot these visuals for this project. And I gotta start getting my solo album straight. He already put out his second solo album, so I gotta make my other studio joint and then we’ll probably get to it. Or we may do it before I put out another album. It’s gonna be for retail. Live In Concert‘s not a free tape no more, because all the bread we had to spend on clearing [the samples] I gotta count some of that s### back.

Do you think we’re going to see an album from Smoke DZA or Michael Rocks this year?

Mikey got his One Off joint. He got that One Off distribution company getting a lot of s### popping. I definitely figure after he does his Banco EP then he’ll probably be next. I don’t know what DZA wants to do with this s### he’s planning. Every time I line up with DZA he’s playing so much s###, I don’t know what his next move is. I’m not one who dictates his next move, because I don’t really work with a structure. Whatever you wanna do is what you wanna do. So it’s really up to DZA. I definitely know that Roddy has his s### titled and working on artwork.

Speaking of artwork. Can you speak on the concept behind the artwork for New Jet City?

You know how I do my artwork. I like to kinda capture a time and some way for you to look at it and already imagine what it will sound like just from looking at the picture. I figured people were thinking that for New Jet City it would be some kinda play on [the movie] New Jack City and me with shades and a Kangol and a jeep. I definitely know that the people who really know me weren’t expecting that when they were hearing me say “New Jet City.”

Anything else you want to add?

Man, we in this muthafucka playing NBA Jams. I’m bout to go get back into the game.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Mobb Deep's Reunion Is Really….

TMZ cracked me up with that “breaking news” the other day about Mobb Deep. First of all, that tour was reported by every other rap site. But anyway…that’s all good. But, my sources are telling me that this reunion is just a reunion for the money. Business, kind of like EPMD. Those dudes are cool, but they definitely are not like the days of old. Mobb Deep ain’t friends, my sources say, and they aren’t even all that cool. They are coming together and making money together for the sake of the tour. I’m not sure how much they have communicated, but I can’t fault them. At the end of the day, they are stronger together and can make things pop that way. For example P has a solo project on the way and Hav has lots of beats coming.

He tweeted…

“Working on releasing a beat every 2-3 weeks on iTunes. MC’S get your MIC’S ready!! #13,” he tweeted February 6th.

Good for this. These are grown men with kids and wives and stuff like that. Make money.

Listen to Shook Ones if you think this is a bad thing.

Ex-LAPD Officer Suspected of Shooting 3 Cops

(Allhiphop News) Los Angeles is on high alert after three police officers were attacked and shot, one fatally. All suspicion points to Christopher Jordan Dorner, 33, a former LAPD officer. Dorner (pictured above on the left with former LAPD police chief Bratton) was fired in 2009 for making false statements. He appealed the decision but was not reinstated to the force. It seems since that time he’s been plotting to seek his revenge on those who he felt railroaded him.

In a message posted on Facebook, he states:

“Your lack of ethics and conspiring to wrong a just individual are over. Suppressing the truth will leave to deadly consequences for you and your family. There will be an element of surprise where you work, live, eat, and sleep…I never had the opportunity to have a family of my own, I’m terminating yours.”

The attacked on LADP officers began at 1:30am Thursday when two cops, who were protecting an officer named as a target in Dorner’s letter were shot at. Shortly after that, two officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, believed to be Dorner at an intersection. Their patrol car was ambushed and one of them was fatally wounded.

Dorner was already under investigation for the double murder of a young couple, which included the daughter of Randy Quan, a retired LAPD captain who was involved in Dorner review and ultimate dismissal from the LAPD.

A manhunt continues for Dorner, who is considered to be armed and dangerous.

Daily Word: Let the HATERS Hate!!

Happy Thursday my strong and confident! Welcome to the day you respect and salute all of your opposition! Today’s Daily Word is dedicated to letting the “haters” hate! When something or someone is against you, it doesn’t mean that you should change or that you are going in the wrong direction, it simply means that what you are saying or doing is so powerful that folks want to suppress it! Think about that for a second…. Before you ever utter a word of complaint about the so called “hater” again realize the benefit that he/she/it brings to your ultimate greatness! I am not talking about genuine concern or constructive criticism… I am talking about blatant envy, jealousy and hate! Yes it may seem overwhelming at times and best believe that the closer you get to success the more this nasty disease begins to rear its head… But as the saying goes “What is for you, no man can ever take away.” LET THE HATERS HATE!! Know and appreciate that the fact that you have haters means that you are a threat and a force to be reckoned with! Know and understand in the same breathe that most hate comes from self-inflicted inferiority! If people knew and understood their own greatness they wouldn’t have time to even think about what others are doing! Effective immediately I need you to NEVER pay attention or let opposition slow you down! You are more powerful than you even realize! Use that power to become the best that you can possibly be!! NOTHING CAN STOP YOU BUT…. (FILL IN THE BLANK)

Hip-Hop Rumors: The Real Reason Wendy Williams Started Those Gay Rumors About Erick Sermon!

Did you see the Unsung on EPMD on TVOne? If not, check out the repeats on the network, because our co-leader Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur represented on the show with dope commentary. Anyway, here’s the rumor!

On the show, they mentioned that Wendy Williams started the relentless gay rumors about Erick. But here is what happened according to my sources. First of all, Erick is from Long Island, NY. Wendy is from somewhere in NJ, I think maybe central.

ANYWAY, rumor has it, Erick Sermon had Wendy to his place in the boonies of LI. And she was just starting out, but gaining momentum. She liked him, as they said on “Unsung.” E smashed, according to rumors. According lore, he then gave her a token or whatever New Yorkers giving somebody and sent her home. She was P#####! Remember Long Island is way out there! And NY ain’t close! She then started the gay rumors as a way to get him back and ruin his rep. It kind of worked because these rumors linger to this day.

I could be wrong but that’s the word. The denied anything of a homosexual nature with E but….the ghost of Wendy lingers!

Cash Money's Mystikal Prepping First Album In 12 Years

(AllHipHop News) After 12 years of being on the sidelines in the rap game former No Limit solider Mystikal is ready to get back on the field.

Out of jail and on a new label, the New Orleans emcee- who is best known for the hits “The Man Right Chea,” “Danger,” “Shake Ya Ass” and “Make ‘Em Say Uhh!” is currently recording his first album in 12 years.

Rolling Stone is reporting that Mystikal has been working on his new LP with long-time producing partner KLC of Beats by The Pound since 2010.

The album is titled Original, and it will feature guest appearances by Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Future, Busta Rhymes, and others.

This will be Mystikal’s first studio album he has released since signing with Cash Money Records in 2011.

He dropped the single “Original” featuring Birdman and Lil Wayne in 2012.

As an added bonus, Mystikal and KLC decided to incorporate the authentic NOLA sound into his latest songs by recording tracks with the New Orleans jazz/rap hybrid performer Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews and the award-winning Stooges Brass Band.

Mystikal is also planning to go on tour with the full ensemble this year.

When asked about choosing to use live instrumentation on his new album Mystikal told Rolling Stone, “You eat a TV dinner, five minutes, you are going to s### it back out. A home-cooked meal, it’s going to stick to you. And that’s the difference between real instruments and s### just playing out the keyboard.”

Part of Mystikal’s 12-year hiatus was the result of having to serve a six-year prison sentence stemming from a 2003 sexual battery and extortion case.

After originally stating the sexual encounter between he and his former hairstylist was consensual, Mystikal eventually pled guilty to the charges when police found a videotape of the encounter.

Prior to his conviction, Mystikal released his last album Tarantula in 2001.

His discography also includes the certified platinum Ghetto Fabulous and the 2-million selling, Billboard #1 Let’s Get Ready. Original will be Mystikal’s 5th official studio album.

Check out the video for Mystikal’s “Original” featuring Birdman and Lil Wayne.

Uncle Luke Questions Rick Ross' Gangster; Tells Rick Ross "Squash Your Beef"

(AllHipHop News) 2 Live Crew front man, Uncle Luke, now one of Miami’s most renowned community service heroes, recently wrote an open letter in the Miami New Times to Maybach Music Group founder Rick Ross.

As part of his series with the Miami New Times called, “Luke’s Gospel,” Luke warned  Rick Ross about the dangers that accompany touting a gangster lifestyle.

Recalling Ross’ most recent scare after being shot at in Ft Lauderdale, Florida just a few weeks ago, Luke recommended that Ross ends all his beef with the Gangsta Disciples and pointed out that record labels are steering away from artists surrounded with security issues.

“You have the Gangster Disciples breathing down your neck because you’ve named-dropped Larry Hoover,  the gang’s founder, in your music.” Uncle Luke said of Rick Ross’ track “BMF.”

The two have a brief history both being from Miami and on French Montana’s song “Pop That” Rick Ross shouts out Uncle Luke saying, “Shout out to Uncle Luke, we the 2 Live Crew.”

Despite the shout out, Luke also questions Rick Ross’ past with respect to drug trafficking and the authenticity of his street credibility.

“Hip-Hop has a rich history of college guys who never committed a crime rapping about moving kilos of cocaine and taking out snitches. Every gangster rapper takes on the role of a real hood legend to build up street cred. But I don’t want you to fall into the trap of believing you are really a gangster,” Luke said.

Check out the whole letter below:

Dear Rick Ross:

As someone who survived several rap beefs, I’m going to give you some advice. You need to seriously address the threats and attempts on your life. You have worked hard to become a big name in hip-hop. You’ve paid your dues and you’ve grown lyrically since the release of your debut album, Port of Miami, in 2006. You’ve arrived, buddy.

But all this gangster b####### is jeopardizing your career. No club or arena is going to risk people getting shot. You can forget about doing any tours or CD signings. And if you can’t make money, watch how fast Warner Bros. Records turns on you. I know from experience how venues and the music industry would like to black ball you.

You have the Gangster Disciples breathing down your neck because you’ve named-dropped Larry Hoover, the gang’s founder, in your music. Unlike the record and book publishing industries, these bad dudes don’t understand the concept of public domain. They see you getting rich forever by rapping about their leader, and they don’t like it. That’s why they’re on YouTube talking about how you need to go see them and cut a check.

It’s a shame you can’t enjoy life without spending part of your earnings on heavy security or risking your freedom by purchasing an arsenal. Remember, that’s what landed T.I. and Lil Wayne in prison. You don’t want that to happen to you. However, those are the consequences of rapping about being something you’re not.

Hip-hop has a rich history of college guys who never committed a crime rapping about moving kilos of cocaine and taking out snitches. Every gangster rapper takes on the role of a real hood legend to build up street cred. But I don’t want you to fall into the trap of believing you are really a gangster.

Trust me, you don’t want to go out like Biggie Smalls or Tupac. It’s time you squash your beefs.
