DJ Quik took to Twitter to express his belief that he shined a light on DeBarge before Ye. The Compton representative wrote, “I bought [sic] El DeBarge back 1st and got him paid. Kanye West gets all the credit. Unfair. I’m bout to do some blow and drink Jameson.”

The two artists have been friends and recording partners for many years. Quik featured DeBarge on his single “Hand In Hand.” The song appeared on the 1998 album Rhythm-al-ism.

Since that time, DeBarge released his own LP titled Second Chance in 2010 which featured a guest appearance by Fabolous. In addition, DeBarge made a surprise comeback at the 2010 BET Awards.
