(AllHipHop News) An appreciation for motor vehicles has been part of Hip Hop culture from the early days. Even Sugarhill Gang’s seminal 1979 hit “Rapper’s Delight” shouted out the Lincoln Continental and a sunroof Cadillac.
AutoNation analyzed lyrics to find out which car brands were talked about the most in music from the 1960’s to present day. Not surprisingly, Hip-Hop acts dominated the chart of musicians with the most car mentions in their tunes.
Los Angeles emcee The Game came in at number one, followed by Lil Wayne at number 2, and Jay Z at number 3. The top 10 artists were all from the rap genre.
According to the study, Chevrolet was the most mentioned brand overall in music since the 60’s. However, Mercedes-Benz has been the favored lyrical choice over the last three decades.
The German luxury vehicle was the top mentioned car for stars such as Drake, Kanye West, Fetty Wap, Future, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Beyoncé.
When looking at which artists have the most mentions for each individual car brand, Redman led the Acura tally. Bentley, Chevrolet, Honda, Mercedes-Benz (tie), and Porsche were monopolized by The Game.
Lil Wayne topped the BMW and Bugatti mentions. Big Tymers took first place for Hummer and Lexus. Too $hort ranked highest for Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz (tie). Nas was the frontrunner for Dodge (tie) and Jeep.
The charts were created by AutoNation searching songmeanings.com’s API for song lyrics that included car-related terms such as brand names and models. However, some car makes and models were not included in order to avoid their names being confused for non-vehicle-related mentions.
