Pharrell: It's Impossible For A Man To Be A Feminist (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) The majority of Pharrell’s historic 2013 run and his recent 2014 G I R L album has been the empowerment of women. However, in a recent interview, Pharrell explains how as much as he supports women, it is impossible for him or any man to be a feminist.

During his interview with the United Kingdom’s Channel 4 News, Pharrell . According to Pharrell, his association with feminism has an inherent limit that he, and no other man, can change:

I’ve been asked, am I a feminist? I don’t think it’s possible for me to be that…I’m a man. It makes sense up until a certain point. But what I do is—I do support feminists. I do think there’s injustices. There are inequalities that need to be addressed.

The Pharrell-assisted Robin Thicke hit “Blurred Lines” has been criticized in the media for “r####” lyrics and was banned by more than 20 university unions around Britain. When interviewer Krishnan Guru-Murthy mentioned the sexual connotation of the song’s “I know you want it” lyric, Pharrell referred back to the song’s overarching concept for salvation:

Okay cool. But does that make it off-limits for me to use in a song, especially when the overarching context is that there are good women who also have bad thoughts? If a good woman can have sexual thoughts, is it wrong for a man to have a correct guess that a woman might want something?

Troy’s debut album also created a lot comparisons to fellow New Yorker 50 Cent. The G-Unit leader admitted that he saw a lot of himself in Troy and wanted to see him succeed, but there was another comment made by 50 that Troy did not take as a compliment.

In an interview with Hot 97 in April, 50 referred to his former G-Unit partners Tony Yayo and Lloyd Banks as Troy Ave’s “hypemen.” While he claimed the statement was not a “shot” at Yayo and Banks, some people did see it as disrespectful to essentially label the veteran rappers as a new artist’s sidekicks.

Apparently, Troy agrees. He responded to 50’s hypemen comment during an interview with the Breakfast Club.

“I think that was wack. That’s they personal issues. I don’t really be having an opinion on other people’s personal issues,” said Troy. “I think it was wack. I wouldn’t have said that about my people, but I don’t know what they got going on. Lloyd Banks is definitely in my new video, and I don’t feel like they were hypemen. I felt like they were doing what you were supposed to do.”

Troy goes on to add that no one would  have called established rappers from other regions hypemen for supporting young rappers out of their area. It was that lack of unity that he says was the problem with New York Hip Hop.

“They ain’t gonna call T.I. or Young Jeezy a hypeman if they get on whoever record coming up,” argues Troy. “That what’s wrong with New York Hip Hop, or what was wrong with it. That’s why I had to come through and restore the feeling.”

Manny Fresh Talks Not Sequencing "400 Degreez", Previews New Song W/ Mos Def + MORE (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Mannie Fresh is one of the most accomplished music producers of the past 15 years and claims to have over 200 songs in the stash. In his recent interview with NPR’s Mircophone Check, the self-proclaimed “Manny Glover” speaks on not sequencing Juvenile’s first album, recording with Mos Def and more.

After naming Juvenile’s album 400 Degereez was the best representation of Mannie Fresh’s signature sound, Mannie revealed how there was no sequencing involved in the making of the album. According to Fresh, the recording session were reminiscent of old Motown sessions of the 70s:

Pretty much like if it was an old Marvin Gaye/Motown session. We pretty much had a count-off and we played. We played for however many bars that song was. Juvie rapped those songs next to use while we were playing. On some of the songs, you can kind of hear where it’s 14 bars in his rap instead of 16 so we had to improvise to make the hook work.

Mannie Fresh admits that Mos Def’s recording process is “weird” but they are finishing up the upcoming collaborative album OMFGOD. Detailing their recording process, Fresh admits that recording with Mos Def involves lectures:

We have to listen to him talk, for about two or three hours about life. [Laughs] We got to let him get it all out. He has to give us all of his conspiracy theories and all of that and all of this. Then we like, “ok, dude, you good? You ready?” He’s like, ‘Okay, I’m ready.”

Fresh previewed a new song from their upcoming album, entitled “Let’s Go” that features. Speaking about the influence of technology on music production, Fresh says it has caused a rift between “producers” and “beatmakers”:

When you have something do it for you. It’s nothing wrong with saying ‘ok, I can get an app or a plug-in that’s an 808 plug-in. But, when I buy something and it can, I guess, imitate and emulate the beat, then I’m not really working. You have things now that you can buy that pretty much have chords in it. That have  piano patterns in it. Well, why do I have to work? That’s why we have to define things between ‘beatmakers’ and ‘producers’.
